Working off the starter row, spiraling
rows of ISK stitches stack to become
a tube of wire that can be manipulated
into a variety of shapes and patterns.
The result is similar in appearance to
wire Viking knit, but many find this
technique to be easier and faster to
work.

Essentially, ISK uses a crochet hook to pull the working wire through the stitch of the previous row. The hook itself not only leads the wire where it needs to go, but it also helps to shape each loop.
Practicing often to achieve consistently sized loops and tension will lead to beautiful, professional-quality finished designs. I also recommend creating your first ten rows of ISK in a contrasting wire and using it as a base that can later be removed and reused.
Making A Permanent Base
If you make yourself a permanent base you can make future projects right away without having to make the chain stitch starter row.
Over the years I have learned that such a base is a useful shortcut to have, and it will last for ages. If you turn the starter into a base, you will never again have to make a starter from scratch for this specific size of work.
All you have to do is add a few rows to the base from time to time using leftover wire, because you snip away the top row each time you “release” a project.
