Mod Knots: Creating Jewelry and
Accessories with Macrame
,

|
Macramé is a crafting technique built from a variety of different knots that create patterns and designs.
There aren't many knots, but the numerous design variations they can produce are amazing. Some of the knots are used to attach knotting materials to a support; some are used as decorative knots.
Familiarize yourself with them before you begin the projects if you haven't done macramé before. Practice the knots in a variety of random combinations, and see how they look and feel using different types of materials.

Overhand Knot
Overhand knots are unique knots in that they can be used to start or finish a piece, or they can be strictly decorative. Quite a few projects in this book utilize overhand knots; an alternating overhand knot pattern is even used to create the yoga mat bag.
1. PULL CORDS THROUGH LOOP
Attach the material to be knotted to the top of your macramé board with T-pins to hold it securely. Hold the material loosely in one hand. With the other hand, lay the material across the tail of the cord to form a loop.
2. ADJUST KNOT PLACEMENT BEFORE TIGHTENING
Draw the tail through the loop and pull taut, but not too taut. Slide the knot to adjust its position before you tighten it completely.
3. TIGHTEN KNOT
Once the knot is in the proper placement, tighten it.
4. EXAMINE COMPLETED KNOT
Make sure the cords lay nicely before going onto the next knot.
