New York based designer Sang Hoon Kim presented at SaloneSatellite Milan Design Week 2010 his Phenomena room divider, characterized by an organic, pleasing and smoothly sensual appearance. The movement of light brings a fantastic illusion due to its reflection, refraction and shadow. The designer took inspiration by this natural light phenomenon and expressed it in the form of furniture. This room divider is designed to be folded in various angles.

To make one feel the movement of light, I divided the wavy sides into many layers so that they receive light from different angles and reflect it at different angles. As a result, the fixed mass feels like it is changing and moving according to the position from which the viewer sees it.

This product indeed is a nice example of one of the most used fabrication methods in parametric digital design: the decomposition of a surface into parallel sections. It allows to easily fabricate complex surfaces with cnc cutters and simply flat elements, subsequently reducing the complexity of the process.
