The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood

I mean by a picture a beautiful romantic dream of something that never was, never will be - in light better than any light that ever shone - in a land no-one can define, or remember, only desire.

                                                                             THE  NAME

Raphael’s picture  ‘Holy Transfiguration’ was exposed in London National Gallery in 1840 year. In 1847 year Hunt and Milles severe criticized the picture and one of their pupils said ‘Well, then your are Pre-Rahaelites’. Later new born society added to the name word ‘brotherhood’ by an example of Natharez brotherhood in Germany.  The brothers began to use cryptogram PRB. Pre-Rahaelites believed that after Raphael’s art rejected naturalness of Early Resurrection in favour of late mannerism artfulness.

Aesthetic Pre-Raphaelitism, the second branch or form of the movement, grew out of the first in the late 1850s under the direction of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It in turn led variously to the Arts and Crafts Movement, modern functional design, and the Aesthetes and Decadents of the 1890s. Rossetti and his follower Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) emphasized themes of medievalized eroticism (or eroticized medievalism) and pictorial techniques that produced a moody, often penumbral atmosphere.

The first venture of the so-called second generation Pre-Raphaetites was the decoration of the Oxford Union Debating Hall. While Morris, Rossetti and Burne-Jones were all still involved in decorating Red Lion Square, Rossetty met Benjamin Woodwart (1816-1861), the desiner of the Gothic style chamber. It was agreed that Rossetti would gather a group of artists, in lieu of a fee they would be paid in board and lodging. Buren-Jones, Morris< Hughes, John Roddam, Spencer Stahope, John Hungerford Pollen and Prinsep all collaborated on the project. It was agreed that the cycle would include ten scenes from Sir Tomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur, an account of King Arthur and the Knignts of the Round Table. Artists used each other as models for the male figures, and relied on portfolio drawings or local girls for the females. Without any experience of painting on a wall, they applied the tempera paint directly onto the dry bric surface. Although the painted surface was glowing on complition, within ten yeas it had deteriorated and the works now appear etiolated. However the project sparkled a renewed createve impetus and a new phse of Pre-Raphaelitism began with Rossetti as its campion.

The Pre-Raphaelite murals in the old Library at the Oxford Union were painted between 1857 and 1859.

THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS

1877 ~ March 22 William Morris and other notable members of the Pre Raphaelite brotherhood hold the inaugural meeting of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in Queen Square, Bloomsbury. The founding members are deeply concerned that well meaning architects are scraping away the historic fabric of too many buildings in their zealous ‘restorations’.

  .

The manifesto of the SPAB was written by William Morris and other founder members and issued in 1877. Although produced in response to the conservation problems of the 19th century, the manifesto extends protection to "all times and styles" and remains to this day the philosophical basis for the Society's work. Applicants for SPAB membership must sign to say that they agree with the manifesto's conservation principles.

The first number appeared in 1 January 1850 with Holman Hunt's etching (700 copies printed; 50 had etchings on India paper). Only 70 were sold. Number 3 appeared on 31 March, number 4 on 30 April (print runs for both are uncertain, and apparently only 106 copies of number 4 were sold). The poor sales forced the journal to close down.                                                  The Germ:

Thoughts towards Nature
In Poetry, Literature, and Art.

When whoso merely hath a little thought Will plainly think the thought which is in him,— Not imaging another's bright or dim, Not mangling with new words what others taught; When whoso speaks, from having either sought Or only found,—will speak, not just to skim A shallow surface with words made and trim, But in that very speech the matter brought: Be not too keen to cry—“So this is all!— A thing I might myself have thought as well, But would not say it, for it was not worth!” Ask: “Is this truth?” For is it still to tell That, be the theme a point or the whole earth, Truth is a circle, perfect, great or small?

Aesthetic Pre-Raphaelitism, the second branch or form of the movement, grew out of the first in the late 1850s under the direction of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It in turn led variously to the Arts and Crafts Movement, modern functional design, and the Aesthetes and Decadents of the 1890s. Rossetti and his follower Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) emphasized themes of medievalized eroticism (or eroticized medievalism) and pictorial techniques that produced a moody, often penumbral atmosphere.

  National Institution of Fine Arts.

The National Institution of Fine Arts was a short-lived Victorian-era art society founded in London to provide alternative exhibition space for artists. Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown notably exhibited there.

The organisation began as the "Institution for the Free Exhibition of Modern Art" in 1847 ("Free Exhibition" for short), and mounted shows from 1848–49 in a temporary building known as "St. George's Gallery" on Knightsbridge (road), next to Hyde Park, London. Its purpose was stated in an 1848 catalogue, "Freedom for the Artist, certainty of Exhibition for his works, and the Improvement of the Public Taste."[2] The society then changed its name to the "National Institution of Fine Arts" ("National Institution" for short) and from 1850–61 exhibited works at the old Portland Gallery at 316 Regent Street.

The National Institution aimed to provide a less-restrictive and more equitable alternative to the established exhibitions at places like the Royal Academy. The organisers allocated space by lottery, so there was no favouritism, allowed artists more control over the display of their pictures, and space was cheaper — making it more accessible to women artists who suffered discrimination by other exhibiting bodies. The exhibition was "free" in the sense that any artist was free to exhibit as long as he or she paid for the privilege!

Dante Gabriel Rossetti exhibited his first major oil painting, The Girlhood of Mary Virgin, at the Free Exhibition in March 1849, and in April 1850 Ecce Ancilla Dominiat the National Institution. Ford Madox Brown also exhibited there in 1848 with Wycliffe reading his Translation of the New Testament to John of Gaunt and in 1849 with The Young Mother and Lear and Cordelia.

The Grosvenor Gallery was an art gallery in London founded in 1877 by Sir Coutts Lindsay and his wife Blanche. Its first directors were J. Comyns Carr and Charles Hallé. The gallery proved crucial to the Aesthetic Movement because it provided a home for those artists whose approaches the more classical and conservative Royal Academy did not welcome, such as Edward Burne-Jones and Walter Crane Lindsay and his wife were well-born and well-connected, and both were amateur artists. Blanche was born a Rothschild, and it was her money which made the whole enterprise possible. The Grosvenor displayed work by artists from outside the British mainstream, including Edward Burne-Jones, Walter Crane and other members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In 1877 John Ruskin visited the gallery to see work by Burne-Jones. An exhibition of paintings by James McNeill Whistler was also on display. Ruskin's savage review of Whistler's work led to a famous libel case, brought by the artist against the critic. Whistler won a farthing in damages. The case made the gallery famous as the home of the Aesthetic movement. Founded as an alternative exhibition space to the Royal Academy, the Bond street venue was istantly perceived as a haven foe avant-garde artists, particularly those associated with the notion of art for art's sake.Lindsay stated:"There are several men in London whose ideas and method of embodying them are strange to us; but as I do not think strangeness, ore even eccentricity of method, sufficient excuse for ignoring  the woks of men otherwise notable, I have built the Grosvenor Gallery that their pictures... may be fairly and honestly judged".An amateur artist in mural and ceramic design, Lindsay was a particular supporter of decorative painting.

Affronted byThe Falling Rocket, John Ruskin accused Whistler of “flinging a pot of paint in the public's face” in the Fors Clavigera. As a leading art critic of theVictorian era, Ruskin’s harsh critique of The Falling Rocket caused an uproar among owners of other Whistler works. Rapidly, it became shameful to have a Whistler piece, pushing the artist into greater financial difficulties. With his pride, finances, and the significance of his Nocturne at stake, Whistler sued Ruskin for libel in defence. In court, he asked the jury to not view it as a traditional painting, but instead as an artistic arrangement.[5] In his explanation, he insisted that the painting was a representation of the fireworks from the Cremorne Gardens. During the trial, Sir John Holker asked, “Not a view of the Cremorne?” to which Whistler was quoted as saying, “If it were a view of Cremorne, it would certainly bring about nothing but disappointment on the part of the beholders.”[6] However, his case was not helped when The Falling Rocket was accidentally presented to trial upside down.[7] His explanation of the composition proved fruitless before the judge. The Ruskin vs. Whistler Trial, which took place on November 25 and 26, 1878, was disastrous for Whistler. While he did not lose, he only won a farthing.[8] After all the court costs, he had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. Whistler was forced to pawn, sell, and mortgage everything he could get his hands on.[9] Whistler included a transcript of the case in his 1890 book The Gentle Art of Making Enemies.

'The Tree of Forgiveness', Edward Coley Burne-Jones

The Tree of Forgiveness, by Burne-Jones

According to Burne-Jones' own list of works, he worked on 'The Tree of Foregiveness' in 1881 and completed it in 1882. The face of Phyllis was most probably modelled on Maria Zambaco, a member of the Ionides family, with whom Burne-Jones had an affair in the late 1860s. He exhibited it at the Grosvenor Gallery in that year where it received mixed reviews. Some critics found the approach to the figures strange, The Times for example noted that: ‘The picture is a strange one, its effect repellent in the extreme…the anatomy is not only shown, but insisted on – flung violently in the spectator’s face, so that for some time nothing can be seen but muscles of every description, all of them twisting and straining...’.In contrast all the critics agreed that the details of the painting such as the almond blossom and flowers, were painted with great accuracy and appreciation of colour. Henry James, the American writer, wrote in support of the picture pointing out that the subject was difficult and impossible to make natural. The artist had to content himself with making the work look ‘lovely’. The art dealers Thomas Agnew & Sons purchased the painting from the Grosvenor Gallery exhibition and sold it to the Liverpool businessman William Imrie for £2,100 in December 1882.

Ruskin was not always keen on Botticelli. When he bought Botticelli's 'Virgin and Child'from the dealer Charles Fairfax Murray, he wrote to him that the painting was so ugly that I've dared not show it to a human soul”, and he never mentioned it in any of his writings.

However, in 1872 and 1874, Ruskin studied Botticelli’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, Rome. He started to see Botticelli as an important figure representing the continuity between the Greek and Christian traditions. He also took the credit for the resurgence in interest in Botticelli in the 19th century.

NEW  GALLARY

Central Hall  of the New Gallery, from the catalogue New Gallery Notes, Summer 1888.

New Galery notes  1888

1888 by J. Comyns Carr and Charles Edward Hallé.

The New Gallery was founded in 1888 by J. Comyns Carr and Charles Edward Hallé. Carr and Hallé had been co-directors of Sir Coutts Lindsay's Grosvenor Gallery, but resigned from that troubled gallery in 1887. The building was designed by Edward Robert Robson FSA, and constructed in little more than three months to ensure that it could open in the summer of 1888.

The gallery was built on the site of an old fruit market. Existing cast-iron columns supporting the roof were encased with marble to give the impression of "massive marble shafts" topped with gilded Greek capitals. The architrave, frieze, and cornices above the columns were covered with platinum leaf. At the opening, the West and North Galleries on the ground floor were devoted to oil paintings, and the first floor balcony around the Central Hall displayed smaller works in oils, watercolours, etchings and drawings. Sculpture was displayed in the Central Hall itself.

The New Gallery continued the ideals of the Grosvenor, and was an important venue for Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic movement artists. Edward Burne-Jones, then at the height of his popularity, supported the new venture, serving on its Consulting Committee and lending three large oils for the opening, thus ensuring its financial success. Lawrence Alma-Tadema and William Holman Hunt also joined the Consulting Committee, and George Frederic Watts and Lord Leightontransferred their loyalty to the New Gallery.

The private view of the first exhibition was held on Tuesday, 8 May 1888, and the exhibition opened to the public on Wednesday, 9 May, for three months. The private view was a great social success, with former Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone among the early arrivals.

In October and November 1888, the New Gallery hosted the first showcase of industrial and applied arts by the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society under the direction of its founding president, illustrator and designer Walter Crane. No attempt had been made to show contemporary decorative arts in London since the Grosvenor Gallery's Winter Exhibition of 1881, which included cartoons for mosaic, tapestry, and glass, and the Society's annual (later triennial) exhibitions at the New Gallery were important events in the Arts and Crafts Movement at the end of the 19th century.

In 1893 the New Gallery exposed for the first time four panels by Masaccio, later attributed to the Pisa Polyptych (now in Staatliche Museen, Berlin).

Carr continued as co-director until 1908. The Arts and Crafts Exhibition of 1910 was the last to be held at the New Gallery.

John Rogers Herbert

Herbert's work influenced the newly formed Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood — who asked him to sponsor their publication The Germ, and whose artistic goal was to 'out-Herbert Herbert'. Herbert's paintings The First Introduction of Christianity into Great Britain (1842) and Our Saviour Subject to his Parents in Nazareth (1847) were the inspiration for the two most important early works of William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, founders of Pre-Raphaelitism.The two paintings, Hunt's A Converted British Family Sheltering a Christian Missionary and Millais' Christ in the House of His Parents were exhibited at the RA in 1850 to great controversy. Herbert used his position within the RA to help the young artists.

, : As we seached through this book of ingravings...

      , ( Giotto, Gozzoli) . Benozzo Gozzoli 14-    Carlo Lasinio 1828 .

He was born at Treviso, but worked chiefly at Florence. Lasinio started as a painter at the Accademia di Belle Artiin Venice. He quickly placed more emphasis on printmaking, especially after moving to Florence in 1778. He established his reputation with two large series of etchings in 1787 and 1789. Lasinio also taught engraving at the Accademia in Florence, becoming a Professor in 1800.

Lasinio moved to Pisa in 1807, taking up the position of conservatore of the Camposanto. He made considerable efforts to protect the Camposanto and its frescoes from ruin, from which it was threatened due to the destructive effects of the Napoleonic wars. In 1812 he began his influential book of etchings, recording the frescoes in the Camposanto. This was entitled, Pitture a fresco del Campo Santo di Pisa. These large etchings were composed in the sharply defined "outline style", which was popular in the early nineteenth century in reaction to the soft tonal effects of 18th century stipple engravers such as Francesco Bartolozzi. These works proved to be very influential on 19th-century European art, particularly on the Pre-Raphaelites in Britain. According to William Holman Hunt, study of Lasinio's book convinced the group to reject High Renaissance art in favour of these earlier works. Lasinio's engravin.

One of Lasinio's etchings of frescoes in Campo Santo, Pisa, depicting the Last Judgement  and Hell.

HOGARTH CLUB

, 03 2019 . 20:13 +

  . HOGARTH  CLUB.

The Hogarth Club was an exhibition society of artists, based at 84 Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, London, UK, which existed between 1858 and 1861. It was founded by former members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood after the original PRB had been dissolved. It was envisaged that the club would provide an alternative meeting space and exhibition venue to overcome prejudice against the Pre-Raphaelites at the Royal Academy. Unlike the PRB, the Hogarth Club was established on a professional basis, with two classes of members, artistic and non-artistic, and a distinction between London-based "resident" and provincial "non-resident" members.

Ford Madox Brown suggested that the club be named after William Hogarth since Hogarth was "a painter whom he deeply reverenced as the originator of moral invention and drama in modern art". Brown and Dante Gabriel Rossetti had worked on some previous independent exhibitions, but became determined to form a permanent exhibition space after the rejection of Pre-Raphaelite work by the Academy in 1857. In response they created their own exhibition, later founding the Hogarth Club in tandem with other sympathetic artists, most notably William Holman Hunt and John Roddam Spencer Stanhope.

Despite initial success, the Hogarth Club failed to maintain its momentum, and was finally closed in 1861 after failing to adequately build up its membership in the face of hostility from the Royal Academy. Even the former leading Pre-Raphaelite John Everett Millais refused to join, as did otherwise sympathetic Royal Academicians such as Augustus Egg.

Deeply moved by the work of the Pre-Raphaelites and the writing of John Ruskin (1819-1900), Brett's interests led to his friendship with poet Coventry Patmore (1823-1896) and an introduction to William Holman Hunt (1827-1910). He visited Switzerland in 1856, where he met another painter on the fringe of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, J W Inchbold (1830-1888). Brett contributed to the 1857 Russell Place exhibition and was an early member of the Hogarth Club.

 Frederic James Shields ( 1833 –  1911) , , Ford Madox Brown.

The Rossetti Windows

His relations with the Rossetti family remained very close. He was in constant correspondence with Christina Rossetti, and in 1883, after the death of DG Rossetti, his mother commissioned from Shields "two lights in stained glass, to be placed in the little window which overlooks the grave of Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the churchyard at Birchington, near Margate.

All Saints Church, Birchington showing the grave and two stained glass lights in the little window commissioned by his mother.

The first light (left side) is Rossetti's own design adapted by Shields from The Passover in the Holy Family: Gathering Bitter Herbs (watercolour, 1855–56, Tate Gallery). The second light is designed by Shields and portrays Christ leading the Blind Man Out of Bethsaida. The inscription under the window reads: “To the glory of God and in memory of my Son Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti. Born in London 12 May 1828. Died at Birchington Easter Day 1882.”

An extract from Rossetti's brother's diary states a man from D Brucciani & Co, London was commissioned to take a cast of Gabriel's face. This proved extremely disappointing. So the family requested Shields make a drawing of him, which he duly did. Shields recorded in his diary "Made two copies (in misery) of the drawing of Rossetti's face for Christina and Watts.”

The mirror is painted with almost miraculous skill. Its carved frame is inset with ten miniature medallions depicting scenes from the life of Christ. Yet more remarkable is the mirror's reflection, which includes van Eyck's own tiny self-portrait, accompanied by another man who may have been the official witness to the ceremony.

Wood engraving by Dalziel brothers after Rossetti's design, published 1855, 12.6 x 7.6cm, The British Library, London

Rossetti evokes the haunting mood of the poem through the contrast between dark and light and through the rhythmic movements of the maids. They stand like the three Fates, dominating the man.

  Franqois Joseph Navez,

Navez was a Belgian student of Jacques-Louis David in Paris. In 1816, David sought political asylum in Brussels, and Navez returned with him to work closely with his former master. Navez's style fuses David's naturalism and the idealization of Ingres, whom he also admired. Exhibited to great acclaim at the Brussels Salon of 1824, this work presents the Massacre of the Innocents as an intimate family drama, whose "frightening realism" struck critics. Belgian.

Completion Date: 1869
Style: Romanticism
Genre: mythological painting
Technique: oil
Material: canvas
Dimensions: 81.3 x 40 cm

The Pyrrhic Dance was a Spartan war dance, performed at the Spartan and Athenian games. This picture was Alma-Tadema's first picture to be shown at the Royal Academy. It was generally well received. The notable exception was the art critic and champion of the Pre-Raphaelites, John Ruskin, who complained that it was 'a detachment of beetles looking for dead rat'.

Charles Allston Collins

, 04 2025 . 11:25 +

(1828 - 1873) Charles Allston Collins.

January 1828 –  April 1873

Collins was one of the closest associate Pre-Raphaelite. He met John Everett Millais and became influenced by the ideas of the Pre-Raphaelites, completing his painting Berengaria's Alarm in 1850.  This depicted the wife of King Richard the Lionheart noticing her missing husband's girdle offered for sale by a peddlar. The flattened modelling, emphasis on pattern making, and imagery of embroidery were all characteristic features of Pre-Raphaelitism. In the summer of 1850, he and Millais worked together 'en plain air' in Oxford. His painting The Good Harvest of 1854, is caracteristic of PRB approach. The brich wall reminds us of the Millais The Huguenot and the girl's pinofore is the veru one worn by Millais Woodman's dauter. 1855   , , .

Millais proposed that Collins should become a member of the Brotherhood, but Thomas Woolnerand William Michael Rossetti objected, so he never became an official member.

  ,        , .     , . . « », , .

Collins fell in love with Maria Rossetti, but she rejected him. He became increasingly ascetic and introspective. These attitudes were expressed in Collins's best-known work, Convent Thoughts, which depicted a nun in a convent garden. Collins went on to exhibit many highly devotional images.Collins married Charles Dickens's daughter Kate in 1860, and later was engaged to illustrate Dickens' unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He completed the cover but was too ill to do the rest.
