Condoms do help reduce spread of STDs
REGARDING William Wolkowski's letter (10.1.04) casting doubt on the effectiveness of condoms preventing chlamydia infection, the study I think he is referring to is that by Richard Crosby and colleagues looking at the value of consistent condom use in adolescent girls published last year in the American Journal of Public Health .
Crosby's article makes it clear that consistent and proper use of condoms significantly reduces chlamydia infections in those adolescents who reported 100% use. What is interesting though, is that in 17% of those reporting 100% condom usage, chlamydia was still acquired.
Rather than attributing this to the ineffectiveness of the condoms themselves, the authors comment that this is much more likely to be due to improper usage - such as not using them from start to finish or to adolescents thinking it was more socially desirable to say that they always used them when this was not so...
