Southwest Blanket Square by Alexis Middleton

Here we go!

Materials:

• Worsted Weight yarn in four colors
• Size J (6.0 mm) Crochet Hook

Special Stitches:

Quadruple Crochet (quad): Wrap the yarn around the hook four times, insert into work, draw up another loop (6 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops, repeat four times to complete stitch.

V Stitch (v st): Work dc, ch 1, dc all in the same st.

Treble Crochet V Stitch (trc v st): Work trc, ch 1, trc all in same st.

Rnd 1: With Color A, begin with a magic loop, work ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, trc, ch 2, trc, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, trc, ch 2, trc all in magic loop, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Finish off and weave in ends.

Rnd 2: Join Color B where you finished off. Ch 3,  working in back loops only, dc in each of next two dcs, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch 2 sp, working in back loops only, dc in each of next four dcs, (dc, trc, ch 2, trc, dc) in ch 2 sp, working in back loops only, dc in each of next four dcs, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch 2 sp, working in back loops only, dc in each of next four dcs, (dc, trc, ch 2, trc, dc) in ch 2 sp, working in back loops, dc in next dc, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Finish off and weave in ends.

Rnd 3: Round 3 is worked in the round with four triangles formed on each side of the diamond created by turning and working a few short rows. Join Color C in one of the ch 2 spaces between two dcs (see image above). Ch 1, sc in ch 2 sp, *working in back loops only, sc, hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, ch 2 turn, dc in first dc, (trc, ch 1, trc) in next dc, dc in next dc, skip st, hdc in sc, ch 1, turn, sc in dc, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch1 sp, ch 1, sc in dc, ch 3, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 2 corner sp, working in back loops only, sc, hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, ch 2 turn, dc in first dc, (trc, ch 1, trc) in next dc, dc in next dc, skip st, hdc in sc, ch 1, turn, sc in dc, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch1 sp, ch 1, sc in dc, ch 3, (sc, ch 1,** sc) all in ch 2 corner sp, repeat from * to **, sl st to beginning sc to join.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc over side of ch 2 from previous round, ch 3, skip sc, sc in each of next 2 dcs, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch 2 sp, sc in each of next 2 dcs, ch 3, skip sc, sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 4, 4 trc, ch 4, sc) all in next ch 3 sp, ch 1, sc over side of ch 2 of previous rnd, ch 3, sc in each of next 2 dcs, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch 2 sp, sc in each of next 2 dcs, ch 3, skip sc, sc in ch 3 sp, ch 1, sc in next sc, dc in ch 2 space of Rnd 2 (see image),** sc in next sc, repeat from * to **, sl st to beginning sc to join. Finish off, weave in ends.

Rnd 5: Join Color D in upper right corner of one of the 6 trc groups (see image above), Work all stitches into back loops only unless otherwise noted, *ch4, trc in same st, trc in each of next 4 trcs,  in top ch of next ch 4 trc, ch 4, sl st to same ch, trc in first sc below, trc in 2 chs of ch 3 [(work stitches into the chs not over them to create a more defined shape (see image)], trc in each of next 2 scs, trc in dc, (trc, ch 4, sl st, ch 1, sl st, ch 4, trc) all in ch 2 corner sp, trc in dc, trc in each of next 2 scs, trc in 2 chs of ch 3, trc in next sc, skip sc, trc in both loops of dc, skip sc, trc in next sc, trc in 2 chs of ch 3 sp, trc in next 2 scs, trc in dc, (trc, ch 4, sl st, ch 1 sl st, ch 4, trc) all in ch 2 corner sp, trc in dc, trc in next 2 sc, trc in 2 chs of ch 3, trc in sc, sl st to top ch of ch4 of previous round, repeat from *. Rnd 6: Join Color A in upper right corner of one of the 8 trc groups (see image above), Work all stitches into back loops only unless otherwise noted, *ch4, trc in same st, trc in each of next 6 trcs, trc in top ch of next ch 4 trc, ch 4, sl st to same ch, trc in each of 7 trc below, (trc, ch 4, sl st) in top ch of ch 4, trc in first 3 chs of ch 4 below (work stitches into the chs not over them to create a more defined shape), ch 4, sl st to 4th ch, ch 4, trc in each of next 6 trc, skip 1 trc, trc in both loops of next trc, skip 1 trc, trc in each of next 6 trc, ch 4, sl st to top of next ch 4, trc in first 3 chs of ch 4 below (work stitches into the chs), ch 4, sl st to top of ch 4 above, ch 4, trc in same st, trc in each of next 7 sts, sl st to top ch of next ch 4, repeat from *.
