Nude female, kneeling in prayer pose. Facing left. Verso: seated nude male

One of Rossetti's rare life studies, this seems to relate to the drawing of St Elizabeth of Hungary. On the reverse of the sheet is a larger drawing of a seated male nude, which appears to be a study for Dante in the 1852 watercolour 'Giotto Painting the Portrait of Dante' (Private Collection).

The work was to have been part of a triptych, with the other two panels showing Dante as a Florentine magistrate sentencing Cavalcanti to exile, and Dante at the court of Can Grande della Scala. Giotto is painting the portrait of Dante on a chapel wall, while Beatrice moves below in a procession of women. Cimabue stands nearby, but Cavalcanti—who is present in the Fogg picture and who also figured in the untraced watercolour—is not here. The picture was to have been the first in a Dantescan triptych. The other two panels of the triptych would have shown Dante as a Florentine magistrate sentencing Cavalcanti to exile, and Dante at the court of Can Grande della Scala. Sketches toward the latter survive as Dante at Verona .

Aesthetic Pre-Raphaelitism, the second branch or form of the movement, grew out of the first in the late 1850s under the direction of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It in turn led variously to the Arts and Crafts Movement, modern functional design, and the Aesthetes and Decadents of the 1890s. Rossetti and his follower Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) emphasized themes of medievalized eroticism (or eroticized medievalism) and pictorial techniques that produced a moody, often penumbral atmosphere.

The first venture of the so-called second generation Pre-Raphaetites was the decoration of the Oxford Union Debating Hall. While Morris, Rossetti and Burne-Jones were all still involved in decorating Red Lion Square, Rossetty met Benjamin Woodwart (1816-1861), the desiner of the Gothic style chamber. It was agreed that Rossetti would gather a group of artists, in lieu of a fee they would be paid in board and lodging. Buren-Jones, Morris< Hughes, John Roddam, Spencer Stahope, John Hungerford Pollen and Prinsep all collaborated on the project. It was agreed that the cycle would include ten scenes from Sir Tomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur, an account of King Arthur and the Knignts of the Round Table. Artists used each other as models for the male figures, and relied on portfolio drawings or local girls for the females. Without any experience of painting on a wall, they applied the tempera paint directly onto the dry bric surface. Although the painted surface was glowing on complition, within ten yeas it had deteriorated and the works now appear etiolated. However the project sparkled a renewed createve impetus and a new phse of Pre-Raphaelitism began with Rossetti as its campion.

The Pre-Raphaelite murals in the old Library at the Oxford Union were painted between 1857 and 1859.

THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS

1877 ~ March 22 William Morris and other notable members of the Pre Raphaelite brotherhood hold the inaugural meeting of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in Queen Square, Bloomsbury. The founding members are deeply concerned that well meaning architects are scraping away the historic fabric of too many buildings in their zealous ‘restorations’.

  .

The manifesto of the SPAB was written by William Morris and other founder members and issued in 1877. Although produced in response to the conservation problems of the 19th century, the manifesto extends protection to "all times and styles" and remains to this day the philosophical basis for the Society's work. Applicants for SPAB membership must sign to say that they agree with the manifesto's conservation principles.

Water Willow

Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Medium: oil
Dimensions: 13 x 10 1/2 in.
Date: 1871
Model: Jane Burden Morris
Repainting: 1893
The painting was retouched in 1893 by Fairfax Murray.

Provenance

Current Location: Bancroft Collection, Wilmington Society of Fine Arts, Delaware.

The painting was made sometime between early July and early October 1871, when DGR and Mrs. Morris were together at Kelmscott Manor, which DGR had taken as joint tenant with Morris the previous May. The picture shows the manor in the distant background and the river Thames in the nearer background. The painting is perhaps glossed by the ballad that DGR wrote at the same time, then titled as this picture but now known as “A Death-Parting”.

The background of the painting is the Thames, with a distant view of Kelmscott Manor and a country church. DGR made two sketches for the background, one with the two buildings, the other of foliage.

Production History

Executed in 1871, the picture was not sold until 1877 when it was purchased by J. A. Turner (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 77. 119 ).

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, greatly admired Von Holst's work and according to Browne "considered him a significant link between the older generation of English Romantic painters, such as Fuseli and William Blake, and the Pre-Raphaelite circle".
