El temple actual va ser consagrat l'any 1079, pel bisbe de La Seu, Bernat Guillem, a petició del comte Ermengol i dels habitants del lloc, que havien edificat l'església des dels fonaments. Hi dedicà dos altars, un a dalt en honor de Sant Esteve i l'altreºa sota, en la confessió o cripta en honor del Sant Sepulcre i de Santa Maria.
L'església és un temple de grans proporcions, d'uns 36m. x 10m., amb una sola nau de volta de canó, sostinguda per quatre arcs torals. L'absis de semicercle manté l'amplada i l'alçada de la nau, i en la seva paret exterior s'hi dibuixen arquacions cegues i lecenes. Una cripta divideix l'espai interior.Totes aquestes singularitats situen l'església d'Olius com un dels monuments cabdals de l'arquitectura llombarda del darrer quart del segle XI.
La cripta, és la part més elegant i original de l'església. Primitivament s'hi accedia per dues escales laterals. L'escala actual és del segle XVII. Forma un espai rectangular de 10,4m x 6,28m., dividit en tres naus de quatre tramades que suporten arcs de mig punt i voltes d'aresta. Tres d'aquestes columnes podrien ser reaprofitades d'una església anterior. L'estança rep llum per tres finestres de doble esqueixada, amb notable pendent cap a l'interior. Aquesta construcció ha donat fama a Olius i és molt valorada en l'àmbit del romànic mundial.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The present temple was consecrated in 1079 by the bishop of La Seu, Bernat Guillem. Commissioned by Comte Armengol and the inhabitants of the area who had built a church from the foundations. There were two altars, one on the upper part dedicated to Saint Stephen, and the one below in the cript, in honour to the Holly Shrine and the Virgin Mary.
The church is a large temple of about 36m. x 10m., built with an only semicircular nave supported by four arches. The semicircular apse, keeps the same width and height of the nave. On its outside walls there are blind ornamental arches. Dividing the interior space there is a crypt.
These singularities, place Olius among one of the most important monuments within the Lombard architecture at the last quarter of the 11th century.
The crypt is the most elegant and original part of the church. In the past the way in, was through two lateral staircases. The present starcase dates back to the 17th century. It creates a rectangular space of 10.4m. x 6.28m. divided in three naves of four rafts, that support the semicircular arches and the vaults. Three of these columns might have been reused from a previous church. The light comes through three windows of double cutting with an important downwards to the inside. This crypt has made Olius famous and it is highly appreciated within the Romanesque art worldwide.
