Добрыня, как и почти все герои фольклора, не плод досужего вымысла, а реальный человек, послуживший прототипом многих сказаний. Чтобы выяснить, какая же реальная личность скрывается за этим именем, придется обратиться к "преданьям старины глубокой" - в десятый век. Каковы же были судьбы детей Малка Любечанина? В Малушу влюбился Святослав и женился на ней. Младшим сыном от их брака был Владимир. У Добрыни проявился полководческий талант, и он, став воеводой у Святослава, сыграл выдающуюся роль в победных сражениях с хазарами. Впоследствии, уже при Владимире, он был назначен княжеским посадником (наместником) в Новгороде и по указанию Владимира крестил новгородцев. И вот, казалось бы, парадоксальная ситуация в русской религиозной истории: крещение Руси в Киеве провел Владимир, чья мать Малуша была еврейкой, а в Новгороде - его родной дядя, брат матери.

Но не за это деяние попал Добрыня в русский фольклор, а за свои ратные подвиги. И как тут не вспомнить один из многочисленных куплетов:

Can there ever have been such importance attached to a planned meeting between the Russian and Kyrgyz presidents, in which they will discuss trade, investment, cultural and humanitarian co-operation?

Such is the strange atmosphere in Moscow nowadays that Monday's meeting in St Petersburg - assuming it takes place - will be scrutinised like no other.

And all this because there's been no verifiable sighting of the omnipotent and normally omnipresent Vladimir Putin since 5 March.

Such a long, unexplained absence from public view has fuelled rumours among the chattering classes here and across the internet, that something is wrong - that the president might be sick or even dead or he could be the victim of a palace coup.

With persistent denials from the Kremlin doing little to dampen the speculation, Monday's meeting could be a key moment.

Something untoward

If he makes an appearance with his Kyrgyz counterpart, Almazbek Atambayev, in front of plenty of journalists and television cameras, it would at least quash the rumours that he is either dead or seriously ill, especially if the broadcast is live.

But if not the rumour mill is likely to crank up into an even higher gear.

The suspicions that there is something untoward happening behind the Kremlin's thick, red walls have been heightened by the way government officials themselves have responded.

Photographs which they said proved the president had been holding meetings and working as normal over the past week, were soon discredited when local media reported they had been taken days earlier than stated.

There has also been an intriguing posting on photo-sharing website Instagram by one of Mr Putin's close allies, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Could President Putin's pal Ramzan Kadyrov have let something slip about tensions behind the Kremlin's walls - or does Mr Putin just have flu?

In the posting, Mr Kadyrov renews his pledge of loyalty to the president and adds: "I am devoted to him as a person. And this regardless of whether he is in his position or not!"

This feeds into another theory which some speculate could be the reason for Mr Putin's strange absence: that the unity of the ruling elite surrounding the president has cracked and a powerful faction has now turned against him.

Nemtsov link?

The theory flows from the murder last month of the leading opposition figure Boris Nemtsov, who was shot dead next to the Kremlin.

The key suspects who are now under arrest are Chechen, and one of them, Zaur Dadayev, has been praised by Mr Kadyrov as a "true warrior and patriot".

This has raised suspicions that the murder was carried out on the orders of Chechen officials, which in turn has allegedly angered powerful figures connected with Russia's main intelligence agency, the FSB.

And that puts Mr Putin in a difficult position given his close relationship with the Chechen leadership.

But for now these theories - and the Swiss tabloid allegation that he was attending the birth of a love child in Switzerland - remain totally speculative.

The Kremlin controls the flow of information so tightly that it is extremely difficult to get even a hint of what is happening at the highest levels of government.

And of course at the end of it all when the mystery is finally resolved, it may turn out that the president simply had a bad case of flu.

President Vladimir Putin has said he was ready to put Russia's nuclear weapons on standby during tensions over the crisis in Ukraine and Crimea.

In comments in a documentary aired on state TV on Sunday, Mr Putin said the life of ex-Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych had been in danger.

He also said Russians in Crimea were in danger before Russia annexed it.

In a previously released clip from the film, he said he ordered the annexation weeks before a referendum was held.

Crimea was formally absorbed into Russia on 18 March, to international condemnation, after unidentified gunmen took over the peninsula.

Speaking on the documentary - called The Path To The Motherland - Mr Putin said: "We never thought about severing Crimea from Ukraine until the moment that these events began, the government overthrow".

On putting Russia's nuclear weapons into a state of combat readiness, Mr Putin said: "We were ready to do this."

"[Crimea] is our historical territory. Russian people live there. They were in danger. We cannot abandon them," he added.

He said he used a "closed opinion poll" of Crimeans to judge whether they wanted to remain in Ukraine and found that "75% of the general population desired to join Russia". No details of how the survey was conducted were given by Mr Putin.

Russia initially denied that soldiers who appeared in Crimea without military insignia on their fatigues - dubbed the "little green men" - were Russian.

But Mr Putin subsequently admitted deploying troops on the peninsula to "stand behind Crimea's self-defence forces".

The formal annexation of Crimea sparked unrest in eastern Ukraine in April, when pro-Russian protesters occupied government buildings in Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv demanding independence.

A month later, pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk declared independence from Ukraine after unrecognised referendums.

Ukraine responded by launching an "anti-terrorist operation" against them and the region became engulfed in a conflict which has cost at least 6,000 lives, according to the UN.

The Ukrainian government, Western leaders and Nato say there is clear evidence that Russia is helping the separatists with heavy weapons and soldiers. Independent experts echo that accusation.

Moscow denies it, insisting that any Russians serving with the rebels are "volunteers".

'Good deed'

Full details of Mr Yanukovych's escape from Ukraine are unclear although Mr Putin spoke of Russian efforts to evacuate him and threats against his life.

"For us it became clear and we received information that there were plans not only for his capture, but, preferably for those who carried out the coup, also for his physical elimination," Mr Putin says in the film.

He said preparations to extract Mr Yanukovych were made by land, sea and air, saying "heavy machine guns" were placed in Donetsk "so as not to waste time talking".

Russia's Interfax news agency quoted Mr Putin as saying that saving the life of Ukraine's former leader and his family was a "good deed".

The documentary was made by Andrei Kondrashov, a journalist with state-run channel Rossiya-1.

Its airing comes amid speculation over Mr Putin's whereabouts with the Russian leader having not been seen in public since 5 March.

The Kremlin has denied rumours that the president might be sick or even dead and says Mr Putin will meet his Kyrgyz counterpart, Almazbek Atambayev, on Monday.

People who believe in luck and bad luck -- that is to say,those considered superstitious – may think that somedays or events are unlucky.

In the United States, Friday the 13 is known as an “unlucky” day by super

stitious people. Another famously unlucky day for some is March 15,also known as, “The Ides of March.”

The Ides of March is so unlucky that it is often spoken as a warning: “Beware the Ides of March.”

First, what exactly is an “ides?” The Latin root of “ides,” a singular word,means “to divide.” So, the ides of any month falls in its middle. The Roman calendar set ides on the 15th in March, May, July and October or on the 13th in the other months. The ides of a month usually falls on the first day of a full moon.

In Roman times, the Ides of March was known as a date for paying off debts. But this connection was quickly lost because of different timing between calendar months and changes in the moon’s appearance. The Ides of March was also a time people celebrated Mars, the god of war.

But why do some people still use the expression, "Beware of the Ides of March"? Why do they consider it an unlucky day?

March 15 was very unlucky for one man a very long time ago. On that date in the year 44 BC Julius Caesar was killed.

March 15 may not be unlucky for you but it was Julius Caeser.

The British playwright William Shakespeare takes this incident from Roman history and freezes it forever in literature. In Act 1, Scene 2 of "Julius Caesar,”Shakespeare writes about a meeting between the dictator and a “sooth sayer,” someone who can predict the future.

“Beware the Ides of March,” says the sooth sayer.

Caesar asks, “What man is that?”

And Brutus, Caesar’s loyal friend answers, “A sooth sayer says to (bids you)beware the Ides of March.

Caesar does not listen to the warning. He should have. In Act III, Scene I,Shakespeare’s famous line seems to show that Caesar is asking for trouble.

Caesar says to the Sooth sayer, “The Ides of March are come.”

The Sooth sayer answers, “Aye, Caesar, but not gone.”

Caesar’s friend Brutus will be among the attackers who kill him on the Ides of March.

When he sees that Brutus has turned against him, he says, “Eh tu, Brutus?” This means “You too, Brutus?”

This expression is widely used in Western culture when someone is betrayedby a friend.

A person who is filled with his own importance and pride is said to have his nose in the air. Often the person who has a big head and his nose in the airhas no reason to feel better than others. He surely is the opposite of someonewho is down to earth.

Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down toearth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feeton the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. She has whatis called common sense. She may have dreams. But she does not allowthem to block her understanding of what is real.

The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds.Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a day dreamer.

Sometimes a person with his head in the clouds can be brought back toreality. Sharp words from a teacher, for example, can usually get a day dreaming student to put both feet on the ground.

The person who is down to earth usually has both feet on the ground. But the opposite is not always true. Someone with both feet on the ground may not be as open and easy to deal with as someone who is down to earth.

When we have both our feet firmly on the ground, and when we are down to earth we do not have our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly toothers. Our lives are like the ground below us -- solid and strong.

There have been little clips about this place for the past few years, it is still not finished but is growing to that conclusion as they will soon run out of space.

A short review, it was started by two brothers as a place to show their hobby, it started growing by leaps & bounds.
Soon they were joined by other 'Model Railroad Clubs' and other craftsmen. Some were electricians, model makers, Carpenters, computer programmers. Their wives would stop by to see what they were doing and usually bring them a lunch.
One thing led to another. Three of the ladies had worked at a bakery, several visitors would ask if they had a snack bar. The Idea was planted; some of the carpenters came and built a nice restaurant area for the bakery and a kitchen too. If the fresh Coffee smell didn't get you then the bakery definitely would.
This was about 5 years ago. One of the Breweries came and furnished all of the tables and chairs, serving counter and, etc.
Their latest finished area is the airport. Planes look like they are flying and landing.

No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, she replied, "But I didn't use it!" and the Manager countered with his standard response.

After several minutes discussion, and with the Manager still unmoved, she decided to pay, wrote a check and gave it to him.

The Manager was surprised when he looked at the check. "But madam, this check is for $50.00."

"That's correct I charged you $200.00 for sleeping with me," she replied.

On Jan 6, 1995, McArthur Wheeler boldly robbed two banks in broad daylight with no disguise. According to an article in a local newspaper, “At 5 feet 6 inches and about 270 pounds, bank robbery suspect McArthur Wheeler isn’t the type of person who fades into the woodwork.” He made no attempts to hide his identity and even looked directly into the security camera and smiled. By 11:00 at night, his picture was all over the news, leading an informant to identify Wheeler to the police. Within an hour, he was in jail. As he was being arrested, the shocked Wheeler said, “But I wore the juice!”

On that ill-fated day, Wheeler covered his face in lemon juice. It burned his eyes and skin, but he was confident that it would help himpull off the crime. Two friends had told him lemon juice would make him invisible to security cameras. He told the police, he even tested this lemon juice theory before the robbery. He covered his face in lemon juice and took a picture of himself. He then checked the picture, and sure enough, he wasn’t in it. Wheeler probably pointed the camera in the wrong direction, or the film in the camera might have been defective.

Wheeler became the inspiration for David Dunning, a psychology professor from Cornell University. Dunning found it interesting that Wheeler had a combination of stupidity and confidence. Можно ли представить, чтобы американские, французские СМИ обсуждали: сдают ли бутылки жены Саркози или Буша, возвращают ли вырученные деньги государству, а если нет – то сколько на этом "наваривают"? У нас подобное – не просто местечковость, но идиотизм и бесстыдство, перерастающие в политическое линчевание.

История болезни

Израильские левые возненавидели Нетаниягу с того момента, когда он стал лидером Ликуда. Это были не те левые маргиналы, в которых впоследствии превратились Авода и МЕРЕЦ. После победы на выборах в кнессет 1992 года Рабин и Перес решились на страшный риск сотрудничества с Арафатом. Половина страны поверила в мечту о мире.

Сегодня уже забылось, что левые политики и нагнетавшие подстрекательство СМИ возлагали лично на Нетаниягу ответственность за появление экстремиста, который решился поднять руку на премьер-министра Рабина.

Победа Нетаниягу на выборах премьер-министра 1996 года повергла левых в депрессию. Они дружно завыли: "Игалю Амиру удалось убить мирный процесс!" Мирный процесс убил сразу после Осло Арафат, развязавший чудовищный террор. Израильское общество окончательно осознало это только при премьер-министре Бараке, когда Арафат отказался от предложенного ему возвращения к границам 1967 года и начал "интифаду Аль-Акса". Авода и МЕРЕЦ начали быстро терять избирателей и превращаться в дистрофичные партии.

С тех пор у наших левых происходило неуклонное угасание рассудка. У них не было новых лозунгов, идей, Рабочая партия забыла, почему она так называется. Она знала одной лишь думы страсть: мирный процесс заглох и его надо реанимировать! Но после 2009 года Нетаниягу был премьер-министром две каденции и практически мирный диалог прекратил. Он так уверовал в своею силу, что в конце 2014 года пошел на досрочные выборы.

Деградировавший суммарный интеллект левого лагеря объяснял равнодушие общества к миротворческим призывам только зловредной фигурой Биньямина Нетаниягу. По-детски преувеличивая роль личности в истории, Авода возлагала надежды на новых лидеров – то Мицну, то Переца, то еще раз Барака, то Ехимович. Они были мелковаты, вытащить Аводу из оппозиции не могли. Тем больше левые бесновались и исходили ненавистью к Нетаниягу.

Паранойя, осложненная подлостью

Еще в первую каденцию Биби политические противники при вдохновенной поддержке СМИ начали копать под него. "Дело Бар-Он – Хеврон" раскрутить не удалось. В своих финансовых делах Нетаниягу был аккуратен и не давал поводов для расследований, как Барак или Шарон.

Все, что оставалось левым, это расписывать якобы завышенные расходы канцелярии Нетаниягу на сигары, напитки, мороженое и... травить его супругу Сару. В ходе нынешней избирательной кампании кухонные сплетни стали главным орудием Ицхака Герцога и Ципи Ливни в борьбе за власть.

Блок Авода – Ха-Тнуа не раскрывает контуров намечаемого им размежевания с палестинцами и не объясняет, как конкретно он намерен решать социально-экономические проблемы. Его единственная "стратегия" - представить Нетаниягу сибаритом, прожигающим жизнь за государственный счет, а Сару – жадной и злобной истеричкой.

В любом нормальном государстве его нормальным гражданам понятно, что канцелярия премьер-министра – это не закуток, где прячется его обитатель, самолично и алчно заглатывающий горы мороженого, запивая их ведрами "колы" и "пепси". Это учреждение, которое посещают множество людей. Кому-то из них предлагают только прохладительные напитки, кого-то угощают мороженым – климат у нас жаркий. Бывают и более важные встречи, в ходе которых на стол ставится вино.

При составлении годовых бюджетов канцелярии премьер-министра и его резиденции невозможно предусмотреть точное число посетителей. Лучше выделить на напитки сумму с "запасом". В любом случае эти затраты можно считать почти нулевыми в сравнении с размерами государственных расходов Государства Израиль. Кстати, наши СМИ, ошарашивая обывателя суммами, потраченными на напитки и мороженое "для Биби", "забывают" упомянуть, что это траты за 2-3 года.

Естественно, премьер-министр сам не звонит в ближайший маколет, чтобы заказать напитки или мороженое. Хозяйственными делами ведают специальные штатные единицы. Ни сам Нетаниягу, ни его жена не отвозят в пункт приема тары пустые бутылки. Только в параноидальной фантазии ошалевших от безнаказанности журналистов Сара выгребает из карманов помощников по дому выручку от сданных бутылок, после чего напряженно подсчитывает: какую сумму вернуть государству, а какую прикарманить.

Даже если теоретически Сара может за год наварить на пустых бутылках несколько тысяч шекелей, то надо учесть, что годовое жалованье ее мужа составляет сотни тысяч шекелей, а его личное состояние – то ли 20, то ли 30 миллионов! И Биби, и Сара прекрасно знают, что каждый потраченный ими шекель просвечивается рентгеном, – неужели они будут подворовывать мелочь?

Впрочем, в Израиле нет уважения к национальному лидеру и его семье, которое является частью демократической культуры и которое не позволяет писать о них любые гадости ради чьих-то химерических надежд на повышение рейтинга. Низость даже известных политических комментаторов доходит до того, что они не стесняются изображать супругу главы правительства, как невменяемую особу, к тому же склонную к алкоголизму.

Против Сары не раз подавали жалобы (понятно, кто оплачивал немалые судебные издержки) работницы и работники резиденции премьер-министра. Иногда обиды и гнев просыпаются в них с большим опозданием – всегда после их ухода с этой работы. Претензии к Саре обычно подкреплены только личными жалобами на бессердечное и попросту садистское отношение с ее стороны.

Самое потрясающее – это иск домработницы, проработавшей в доме Нетаниягу шесть лет, регулярно писавшей хозяевам благодарственные письма, а после расставания с ними расписывавшей, каким унижениям и издевательствам ее подвергала Сара! Увы, в левую элиту входят не только представители определенных партий и журналисты, но и служители Фемиды. Рассматривавший жалобу домработницы судья суда по трудовым конфликтам должен был после первого же слушания привлечь ее к ответственности за клевету, задав элементарный вопрос: "Если вас так унижали, то кто вас заставлял работать в этой камере пыток шесть лет?". Естественно, судья исходил из презумпции виновности Сары Нетаниягу.

Столь же бесстыдна кляуза бывшей служащей израильского посольства в Москве, которая аккурат к выборам 2015 года вспомнила про отвратительное поведение супругов Нетаниягу во время их визита в Россию в... середине 1990-х! Она утверждает, что из-за медлительного сооружения прически Сары в российской столице на много часов перекрыли движение и жители огромного города застряли в пробках. Пасквилянтка совершенно откровенно заключает свой драматический рассказ в ФБ признанием: "Я написала это письмо для миллионов людей, которые все еще думают, что чета Нетаниягу может управлять Израилем. Необходимо, чтобы люди прочли и поняли, кто вы на самом деле".

Я не знаком семьями с четой Нетаниягу. Допускаю, что у Сары характер – не сахар. Но почему именно ее наши продажные СМИ рисуют, как вместилище всех возможных пороков, наносящее огромный финансовый ущерб бедному еврейскому государству! Приходится немного напрячь память.

Супруга Ицхаха Рабина Лея в 1970-е годы нарушила закон, запрещавший в то время открывать валютный счет за границей. Позже она была уличена в том, что сбывала в магазине подарки, которые ее муж получал как премьер-министр от иностранных коллег! Далии Рабин-Философ только потому, что она – дочь убитого премьер-министра, предложили пост заместителя министра обороны. Ей даже не пришло в голову отказаться.

Никогда не отличался аскетизмом Эхуд Барак. Будучи министром обороны, он командировал на салон в Бурже делегацию, заполнившую целый самолет, - в нее входили кроме сотрудников министерства их секретарши, а также несколько фотографов. Этот экспедиционный корпус разместился в шикарных отелях. Жена Эхуда Барака держала дома нелегального гастарбайтера. Ее супруг сказал, что понятия не имел о нарушении ею закона.

Ципи Ливни сегодня с пафосом обличает Биби и Сару, наживающихся на пустых бутылках. Она ни слова не сказала в осуждение своей партийной подруги в Кадиме Далии Ицик, когда выяснилось, что спикер кнессета все расходы по дому покрывала за счет израильского парламента. За государственный счет Ицик покупала одежду, кухонный комбайн, телевизоры, видеоаппаратуру, а также делала ремонт дома. Как только об этом написали в газетах, она тихо вернула деньги в бюджет кнессета.

Израильские СМИ не могут не сообщать о проступках высокопоставленных особ и их жен. Но, когда речь идет о представителях левого лагеря, журналисты ограничиваются краткими сообщениями и больше не возвращаются к неприятной теме!

Еще раз отмечу - я ничего не знаю о личных качествах Сары Нетаниягу. Но кое о чем могу судить. В криминальных расследованиях фигурировали сыновья Шарона. Дети премьер-министра Ольмерта уклонились от призыва в ЦАХАЛ и вообще отличались "странным" поведением. Биби и Сара вырастили хороших мальчиков. Оба пошли служить в армию . Один из них чуть не выиграл всемирную олимпиаду по ТАНАХу (каверзным вопросом столкнул его на третье место... родной отец!).

Даже прожженные израильские комментаторы признают, что такой грязной избирательной кампании в Израиле еще не было. В центре внимания СМИ – судьба пустых бутылок из резиденции Нетаниягу. Тщетно Ликуд требует проверить информацию о том, что Герцог и Ливни получают на агитацию деньги из-за рубежа через известные организации – Новый израильский фонд, One Voice. Когда под подозрением – левые амутот, закон безмолвствует.

В свое время мне довелось с ним долго общаться по службе. Мы были почти друзьями, хотя понятие дружба на нашей службе это не то что в обычной жизни. Я с той жизнью расстался позднее, чем он. Места себе в России не нашел, тем более что рожден был не в России. Последнее время живу за границей. Следующая встреча с Владимиром у нас состоялась, когда он уже стал президентом России. Это произошло во время его визита в Австрию. Нам удалось вместе покататься на лыжах, когда он гостил у президента Австрии Клестиля. Неплохо провели время. Второй раз встреча состоялась в 2006 году, и он меня не узнал. Я немного обиделся, подумал что наверное власть испортила, перестал старых знакомых узнавать. Но после того как я встретил еще одного нашего сослуживца, выяснилось, что Путин его не узнал тоже, и вообще не узнает людей, которых должен узнавать. Меня эта информация заинтересовала, и я провел установку. Вот что я выяснил. У Владимира Путина в 2005 году Российские врачи обнаружили рак позвоночника, и он был направлен в Германию для обследования и лечения. Немецкие врачи подтвердили диагноз. По словам одного из них жить Владимиру Путину оставалось несколько месяцев. От лечения немецкая сторона отказалась, Владимира Путина увезли в Россию. Как же этот врач был удивлен, когда через примерно полгода увидел его по телевизору бодрого и здорового. На свои поздравления с выздоровлением, он получил формальный ответ, что его диагноз не подтвердился и президент России В.В. Путин здоров. Такого,утверждает этот врач, не может быть в принципе. Диагноз поставили русские врачи, а они лишь подтвердили его. Причем подтвердил целый консилиум врачей. Врач утверждает ,что тот человек, который у них обследовался, а это был Владимир Владимирович Путин, давно мертв. На одной из пресс конференций я послушал как этот человек, который играет роль Владимира Путина, говорит на немецком языке. Он говорит как человек его хорошо выучивший. Владимир же говорил на немецком с восточным немецким акцентом. Сравнил внешние данные, этот человек выше Владимира сантиметров на пять – семь, поэтому он горбится, Владимир же всегда держался прямо, черты лица тоже не совсем сходятся, натянутые как будто после пластической операции. Этот человек не может кататься на горных лыжах, Владимир на горных лыжах катался прекрасно, я сам этому свидетель. Этот человек не может держаться в седле, Владимир неплохо скакал, и даже занимался конкуром — прыжками через барьеры на лошади. A national survey finds that twice as many Americans approve than

disapprove of the U.S. military campaign against the so-called Islamic State.

The Pew Research Center in Washington, DC published the survey.Researchers found that 63 percent of Americans support the campaign against the Islamic State, the group also known as ISIL or ISIS.

Carroll Doherty is Director of Political Research for the Pew Research Center. He says now nearly half of Americans are willing to consider sending ground

forces to fight the Islamic State group.

“Equally important you see growing support for the possible use of U.S.ground forces to deal with this threat. Forty-seven percent favor the use of ground troops now.”

Mr. Doherty says that number is up from 39 percent since last October.

“A significant shift and given that the public has long been wary of using U.S.ground forces in conflicts around

the world, 47 percent is a pretty size able share of the public supporting that view.”

But Mr. Doherty says support for ground troops could change if sending

American soldiers becomes more of a real possibility.

U.S. government officials have not yet formally debated sending American

ground troops to fight in Iraq and Syria.

There is a partisan, or political, divide on the issue as well. Republicans are twice as likely as Democrats to support the use of ground troops to fight the Islamic State militants. Sixty-seven percent of Republicans support using ground troops, but only 32 percent of Democrats do.

Democrats are three times as likely as Republicans to say they are

concerned that the U.S. will go too far in getting involved in the fight. Some Americans are wary after years of fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“While there is a clear desire to stop this group, there is also this nagging,lingering concern

over yet another deep, long-term U.S. involvement in the region. And that concern is particularly felt by Democrats, more than Republicans.”

Researchers took the survey in February after Islamic State militants releasedvideos of horrific murder scenes. Those videos show more than 20 EgyptianChristian men beheaded on the beach and a Jordanian pilot burned alive in acage. Earlier videos show Islamic State militants beheading Western and

Japanese hostages.

Mr. Doherty says the survey shows Americans know about these stories and are reacting to them.

“Americans have been seeing a steady stream of just horrific acts by ISIS, youknow, between the beheadings and other atrocities. And you know, the news

reports about the growing power of this group. And the public is reacting to it and saying that, you know, more needs to be done to stop ISIS.”

In February, the media reported that another Islamic State hostage, 26-year-old American Kayla Mueller, died in Syria. The public does not know how she died. Pew researc hers found that most Americans still support the U.S.government policy of not paying for hostages held by terrorist groups.

James Comey is the director of the FBI. He says the U.S. government is following 150 people suspected of terrorist connections

who traveled from the U.S. to Syria.

On February 25, authorities arrested three men in New York and Florida who,

they say, have connections to Islamic militants. And in Minnesota, athreatened attack against the Mall of America has increased Americans’ fearsof another terrorist act on U.S. soil.

A leading Russian opposition politician, former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov, has been shot dead in Moscow, Russian officials say.

An unidentified attacker in a car shot Mr Nemtsov four times in the back as he crossed a bridge in view of the Kremlin, police say.

He died hours after appealing for support for a march on Sunday in Moscow against the war in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned the murder, the Kremlin says.

President Putin has assumed "personal control" of the investigation into the killing, said his spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

It "bears the hallmarks of a contract killing," said Mr Peskov.

In a recent interview, Mr Nemtsov had said he feared Mr Putin would have him killed because of his opposition to the war in Ukraine.

Mr Nemtsov, 55, served as first deputy prime minister under President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s.

He had earned a reputation as an economic reformer while governor of one of Russia's biggest cities, Nizhny Novgorod.

Falling out of favour with Yeltsin's successor, Mr Putin, he became an outspoken opposition politician.

'Brutal murder'

Thorbjorn Jagland, secretary general of the Council of Europe, condemned the killing, saying in a tweet: "I am shocked and appalled key opposition leader Boris Nemtsov was shot. Killers must be brought to justice."

US President Barack Obama condemned the "brutal murder" and called on the Russian government to conduct a "prompt, impartial and transparent investigation".

Mr Nemtsov was shot at around 23:40 (20:40 GMT) on Friday while crossing Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge accompanied by a woman, Russia's interior ministry said.

He was shot with a pistol from a white car which fled the scene, a police source told Russia's Interfax news agency.

According to Russian-language news website Meduza, "several people" got out of a car and shot him.

One of the politician's colleagues in his RPR-Parnassus party, Ilya Yashin, confirmed Mr Nemtsov's death.

"Unfortunately I can see the corpse of Boris Nemtsov in front of me now," he was quoted as saying by Russia's lenta.ru news website.

Flowers were left at the site of the shooting through the night.

Since his death, social media has been flooded with tributes to a man remembered as by friends as decent, honest and a democrat . He had been pushed to the political margins in Vladimir Putin's Russia, but he was still prominent enough for someone to want to kill him.

'Putin's aggression'

In his last tweet, Mr Nemtsov sent out an appeal for Russia's divided opposition to unite at an anti-war march he was planning for Sunday.

"If you support stopping Russia's war with Ukraine, if you support stopping Putin's aggression, come to the Spring March in Maryino on 1 March," he wrote.

Speaking earlier this month to Russia's Sobesednik news website, he had spoken of his fears for his own life.

"I'm afraid Putin will kill me," he said in the article (in Russian) on 10 February.

"I believe that he was the one who unleashed the war in the Ukraine," he added. "I couldn't dislike him more."

Mr Putin has been widely accused of fomenting the bloody rebellion in east Ukraine - an accusation he denies. Fighting there followed Russia's annexation of Crimea in March last year.

Almost 5,800 people have died and at least 1.25 million have fled their homes, according to the UN.

The Ukrainian government, Western leaders and Nato say there is clear evidence that Russia is helping the rebels with heavy weapons and soldiers.

Independent experts echo that accusation while Moscow denies it, insisting that any Russians serving with the rebels are "volunteers".

В начале Второй Мировой войны, когда трагическая судьба еврейского народа Европы стала ясной, но кое-какие пути к спасению все же еще оставались, несколько сот состоятельных евреев собрались и купили большой пароход с намерением погрузить на него свои семьи и бежать в Америку.

Но нужны были въездные визы, и они обратились с просьбой к послу США в Великобритании. По сути, для него это не составляло никакого труда, но он отказал. Тогда, спасая от неминуемой гибели свои семьи, эти мужественные люди отправились в плаванье без разрешающих документов.

Узнав об этом, посол сообщил из Лондона в Вашингтон, что к берегам Америки прближается корабль с незаконными эмигрантами.

Преодолевая опасности войны, пароход все же доплыл до американского берега. Спасение было так близко, но увы ... В страну их не впустили. Несчастные люди вынуждены были развернуть пароход и вернуться в полыхающую Европу, где они все были сожжены в топках концентрационных лагерей.

Когда свершилась эта трагедия, лондонский раввин пришел к американскому послу и сказал:

- Ваше превосходительство, ваши деяния не достойны не только вашего высокого звания, но и звания человека вообще. Отныне за гибель исключительно по вашей вине сотен ни в чем не повинных мирных людей, вы сами и вся семья ваша во всех поколениях будет проклятa!

Фамилия этого американского посла была -Кеннеди.

Легенда вторая

Тоже начало Второй Мировой войны. Литва. Посол Японии, будучи благородным и гуманным человеком, не согласным со зверствами фашизма, сострадал к судьбе евреев Европы. Пользуясь своим статусом, он выдавал евреям визы на выезд в Японию, откуда люди потом уезжали в Америку. Так он спас от смерти две тысячи людей.

Узнав об этом, Германия потребовала от Японии убрать этого посла. Японские марионетки незамедлительно исполнили указание, и посол был отозван. И этот добрый человек вернулся в Японию.Удивительно, но его не стали особенно преследовать - только уволили, лишив всех регалий и привилегий.

Чтобы прокормить семью, он открыл маленькую авторемонтную мастерскую.

Легенда третья

В самом центре Киева на огромной площади возвышается памятник национаьному герою украинского народа - всемогущему гетману Богдану Хмельницкому. Сидит он на красивом коне, воздев к небу правую руку с зажатой в ней булавой - символом безраздельной власти над Батькивщиной, воплощая её незалэжность, т.е. независимость.

Хмельницкий - гордость украинцев. Киевляне, u гости столицы искренне любуются красивым памятником великому человеку.

Но далеко не все знают, что был Хмельницкий зверствующим антисемитом. На его совести немало погромов, сожженных мирных местечек и крови ни в чем не повинных евреев. Сколько было погублено будущих гениев, которые могли бы прославить Мир!

Не щадили его верные головорезы - гайдамаки ни детей, ни женщин. Этo -исторический факт.

Много горя принес на землю Украины клятый Богдан. Но в одном местечке, опьянев от крови евреев, он был особо беспощадным.

Он и его гайдамаки разграбили и разрушили все дома, а синагогу сожгли вместе с согнанными туда и запертыми в ней юношами и девушками.

От поселения осталось одно название, евреев не осталось, ни одного.

Но через века... 3a старое зверство воздалось сполна!

Городок этот - Чернобыль, а на месте сожженной синагоги стоял тот самый 4-й энергоблок трагически известной атомной электростанции

После выступления Ксении Светловой в роли предвыборного агитатора (см. ФБ https://www.facebook.com/zeev.fraiman/posts/101527...amp;notif_t=feed_comment_reply) мне захотелось рассказать про Ксению. Быть народным избранником в Кнессете – это очень ответственная миссия, мы должны знать больше о людях, которых выбираем, и именно поэтому считаю своим долгом поделиться личным опытом знакомства с членом партии «Бужи-Ципи» занимающим реальное, согласно опросам, место в «Сионистском лагере».

1. В конце 90-хгодов Ксения работала в туристической компании под моим руководством. Ксения действительно была очень резвой и толковой cотрудницей, схватывала все на лету и вскоре возглавила направление «Египет и Иордания». Направление это было новое, гостей с «доисторической родины» у новоиспеченных израильтян было много, съездить с родственниками в «ближний зарубеж» типа Египта и Иордании было просто, безопасно и относительно недорого. Желающих было столько, что еженедельно собирались русскоязычные группы и отправлялись в путешествие на несколько дней. Не обходилось и без казусов. Помню, был такой случай – Ксения должна была сопровождать группу в Иордании. Первым днем многодневного тура была суббота. По дороге из Иерусалима на КПП с Иорданией, на мост Хусейна (недалеко от Бейт-Шеана) Ксения обнаружила, что забыла паспорт дома. Ничего не объяснив удивленным туристам, Ксения оставляет их одних на КПП и на попутной машине уезжает в Иерусалим за паспортом. Туристы, прождав какое-то время возвращения Ксении, понимают, что есть проблема, и начинают дозваниваться хоть куда-то, в компанию, родственникам, в полицию... В субботу ранним утром найти кого-то было непросто, а мобильные телефоны тогда еще не были так распространены... Надо отдать должное израильским пограничникам на терминале, они всячески помогали и туристам и работникам турфирмы в Иерусалиме, давали звонить и сами звонили иорданцам на другой стороне границы, чтобы объяснить, почему группа находится все еще на израильской стороне. Все документы для перехода границы в том числе групповую визу, которая оформляется заранее, Ксения увезла с собой... Пришлось искать копии документов, по факсу из офиса высылать все прямо пограничникам на КПП и помогать группе перейти границу в «телефонном режиме». Несмотря ни на что тур все же состоялся. Возможно участники этого экстрим-тура захотят отозваться и рассказать дополнительные подробности.

2. Еще один очень важный эпизод, который невозможно забыть. Ксения неожиданно объявляет о своем увольнении, объясняет, что выходит замуж и уезжает жить в Россию. Попрощавшись с ней и пожелав счастья в личной жизни, коллектив компании перераспределил обязанности и продолжал работать. Через месяц-другой в наш офис в центре города заглянула Ксенина мама. Она пришла показать фотографии со свадьбы дочки. На фото мы увидели, что свадьба Ксении была в мечети! На наше удивление мама ответила, что Ксения в Каире замужем за египтянином... Но ведь для того, что бы сочетаться браком в мечети надо перейти в ислам? А можно ли согласно законам шариата выйти из ислама бесправной женщине? Сотрудники компании были в шоке от этой новости и готовы сегодня ее подтвердить. Видимо, в Каире Ксения стала большим специалистом по арабским вопросам и законам шариата... Вернулась Ксения в Израиль летом 1999 года и снова пришла работать в компанию. Однако на тот момент у компании уже были другие хозяева и я лично Ксению не видела.

Так что же получается? - Возможно кандидат от "Сионистского лагеря" русская репатриантка с арабским голосом скрывает свой переход ислам и свое вероисповедание?

Важное пояснение.
Ранее, пока Ксения Светлова была частным лицом, я эту информацию не публиковала. Сегодня, поскольку Ксения Светлова баллотируется в Кнессет в составе партии, претендующей на власть, я полагаю, что информация о ее деловых качествах, идеологии, вероисповедании и т.д. является общественно значимой информацией, необходимой для избирателей.

В связи с бурной реакцией на мой пост буду добавлять выборочные важные комментарии:

Pinchas Polonsky Важно добавить, что с точки зрения закона - лашон hа-ра - публикация фактов о ПОЛИТИКАХ, даже личных фактов про них, которые могут быть релевантны для избирателей (а халатность на работе, отъезд в прошлом на несколько лет из Израиля, брак в мечети и возможный переход в ислам - это безусловно ДА релевантно для избирателей, потому что важно не то что политик сейчас обещает, а что он делал в прошлом) - все это называется "информация, важная для общества", и она НЕ подпадает под закон лашон hа-ра - кстати, не подпадает ни юридически, ни галахически. Пошел в политику и рвешься к власти - изволь предоставить о себе полную информацию и дать доступ о ней всем людям, власти над которыми ты добиваешься.

Imagine crossing thousands of miles of wild seas without a single map or compass, destined for a tiny island you’ve never been to before. Courageous people called Wayfinders navigated the seas in their canoes, using little more than the stars and songs shared by elders. Anthropologists say that Polynesian Wayfinding was a far cryfrom today’s navigation. It was based on more than science. It was an art and a spiritual practice.

Wayfinders fell into a wordless meditative state so that they could detect even the subtlest of navigational clues. They watched the sun, the moon, and the stars very closely. They had to memorize how the sky looked when they first set sail, and how it changed each day after, keeping continuous mental notes. They remembered the changing positions of over 200 stars, along with the locations of the sun and moon for the entire trip.

They used songs to help them remember the names of the stars. Without pens or paper, they tracked speed, direction, and time, storing it all in their heads. They had to clear their minds of all other distractions, and focus, focus, focus. They slept less than two hours a night for weeks on end. If you were looking for a boat’s Wayfinder in a crowd of people, sleepless bloodshot eyes would give him away.

The Italians have an old saying -- "Il dolce far niente." The words mean it is sweet, or enjoyable, to do nothing.

On weekends and during holidays, many of us enjoy doing nothing. But most of the time we have to work. And, to keep our jobs, we must work hard. Our employer will not like it if we do nothing.

American workers often call their employers "bosses." The word boss comes from the Dutch word "baas," meaning master.

Sometimes company bosses are called the brass. They also are some times

called top brass, or brass hats.

Experts disagree about how these strange expressions started. But, they may have come from Britain. Leaders of the 19th century British army wore pieces of metal called oak leaves on their hats. The metal brass has a color similar to that of gold. So a leader or commander came to be called a member of the brass. Or he might have been called a brass hat. Or even the top brass.

By the 1940s, the expression had spread beyond military leaders. It also included civilian officials.

A newspaper in the American city of Philadelphia used the term in 1949. It called the most important police officials top brass.

Other expressions that mean boss or employer have nothing to do with brassor hats. One of these is big cheese. A cheese is a solid food made from milk.

The expression probably started in America in the late 19th century. Some experts believe it comes from a word in the Uersian or urdu languages -- chiz. The meaning is "a thing." So the meaning of big cheese may be a big thing.

Other experts say the word "cheese" in this expression was really an incorrect way of saying chief. The word "chief" means "leader." So the expression may mean big leader.

An employer usually does not object to being called boss. But most workers would not call their employers big cheeses, top brass or brass hats to their faces. These words are not really insulting. But neither do they show great respect.

Horrified the Admiral exclaims, "That's very unhygienic!"

The Chief shrugs and replies, "Well, If that's the way you feel, sir, I suggest you avoid the donuts."

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY

In heavy boots and a big winter coat, 56-year-old factory worker,James Robertson doesn’t look like much of an athlete. But looks can be deceiving. This Detroit factory worker walks more than 20 miles a day to and from work, a round trip that takes him 8 hours or more. He then has only a few hours to sleep before he wakes up to do it all over again.

He makes this mammoth walk five days a week and he’s done it for ten years.

James began walking a decade ago, when his car broke down and he was unable to afford a new one. He hasn’t missed a single day of work since. He has an unbelievably perfect attendance record, especially considering the extreme weather that he sometimes faces. He’s walked through thunderstorms and blizzards, and has yet to bedeterred.

When asked about how he has the will to make such a long walk, James credits faith, determination, and loyalty to coworkers. He says his boss and coworkers are like family to him. His manager’s wife cooks “phenomenal” dinners for James before he makes his long journey home, arriving around 4 in the morning.

On his route, James passes through dangerous neighborhoods; in these moments he relies on faith to keep going. A few years ago, James was mugged and roughed up pretty badly on his walk. Though he doesn’t like to talk about the incident, he didn’t let it stop him from getting to work.

James says, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way and that’s something I never forget.”

Another of his favorite lines is something his father used to say, “It might be tough, but tough times don’t last — tough people do.”

Ten tough years later, James just might be leaving the tough times behind.

When James’ story first made headlines, it inspired 19-year-old Evan Leedy to create a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for a car for James. He began with the goal of raising $5,000 but within a few days, donations skyrocketed and now have passed $300,000. More than 11,000 people donated to the cause in less than four days.

And after ten years of walking, James can now drive to work instead ofhoofing it. Why? A local car dealership donated a brand new car to James.

It goes to show that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. And when people are given an opportunity to help someone in need, they step up and do their part.

Ukraine crisis: Army and rebels stall heavy arms pullout

Ukraine's government and separatist rebels have failed to begin withdrawing heavy weapons from the front line, despite a Monday deadline.

The two sides were given until not more than two days after the latest truce came into effect to start the pullout.

The government said it would not pull back until fighting ended in the beleaguered town of Debaltseve.

Separatists say the agreement does not apply there because the town is surrounded.

They have offered Ukrainian troops encircled there a safe corridor to leave. France, Germany and the US expressed concern at the continued fighting.

The Ukrainian military command said pro-Russian rebels had attacked 112 times since early Sunday, mostly around Debaltseve.

A Ukrainian officer said there was also fighting near Mariupol, a port city.

With the State Comptroller and Ombudsman's report on the expenses of the Prime Minister's Residence due to be published Tuesday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his wife Sarah hosted interior designer and media celebrity Moshe Glamin on a tour of their official home on Balfour Street in Jerusalem.

The tour revealed a somewhat dilapidated house, with some features that have apparently not been renovated since the 1950s, when the house – built in the 1930s for a Greek-Jewish financier – was purchased by the Israeli government.

The video produced by Glamin begins with a “selfie” with Prime Minister Netanyahu in the foyer. Sarah then joins the designer, and points out a carpet that was bought, she said, for President Barack Obama's visit. The carpet that preceded this one, she explained, had very large holes in it, and once the Prime Minister asked a security man to stand on top of one of the holes in order to hide it, during an official visit by a foreign leader.

After viewing Sarah's work room, in which heads of state sometimes confer before press conferences, the pair proceed through another room to the living room, where mismatched sofas surround a low glass table. The sofas, explains Sarah, were only approved for the visit by the French President, which followed Obama's. The sofas that were in place during Obama's visit had holes in them.

The dining room has broken glass lampshades on a track light fixture, and Netanyahu explains that in order to fix or replace any item, bureaucratic hurdles must be surmounted. From there they proceed to the Prime Minister's work room, in which Glamin is shocked to find mold on the curtains and a moisture problem in a corner, which causes the paint to peel.

More dampness and peeling walls can be seen in the patio, and next to it is a yard with no grass. Glamin jokingly suggests that every guest who visits the house be asked to bring a square meter of grass, to gradually fill up the yard.

Glamin is positively petrified, however, when he enters the kitchen. “This doesn't look real,” he explains. “This looks like the kitchen of a boarding school in Romania, in 1954.” He winds up the tour by confessing that he is disappointed by how the home looks – but has enjoyed Sarah's company.

The Prime Minister's Office insisted that the tour was held at Glamin's initiative. Glamin says that he did not allow the Netanyahus to be involved in the editing of the video.

There is little doubt, however, that the video tour was initiated in order to balance out any criticism that will appear in the Comptroller's report. The media has hounded Sarah Netanyahu for years with claims that she spends too much on pistachio ice cream, among other things, and that she is mean and petty toward the residence's staff.

The Netanyahus have an additional, private home of their own in Caesarea.

“Plain Cheeseburger. Give me two of them."

That is Ted Mistretta ordering food in Washington D.C. before boarding a trainwith his daughter Kim.

They were heading home to New York City. But, firstthey stopped at the Shake Shack restaurant to get a bite to eat.

“Any fries? Anything to drink? Are you dining in or to go? Go.”

Shake Shack is a new kind of restaurant becoming more popular in the U.S. The restaurants are not “fast food.” They are known as “fast casual.”

In the last quarter of 2014, McDonald's net income dropped by about $300million. The January earnings report brought more bad news. Worldwide salesdropped for the eighth month in a row and even more than expected.

McDonald’s is working hard to get their customers back. In January, thecompany ran an advertisement during the Super Bowl. The football game is the most watched TV event every year in the U.S. McDonald's wanted toreach those viewers.

While McDonald's is struggling to get their customersback, Shake Shack, is doing well financially. The NewYork-based burger chain had a very successful IPO, orinitial public offering, of shares at the end of January. On its first day of trading, Shake Shack went from $21 a share to just under $46 a share.

Ted Mistretta wishes he had bought the stock that day. He explains why he likes Shake Shack:

“It’s a quality hamburger. It’s you know, they make itwell, great taste. It’s better than most. It’s certainly better than, it’s fast food, but not ‘fast food’ food.”

And, Mr. Mistretta added, he never goes to fast food restaurants.

Being part of the “fast casual” trend has helped Shake Shack. Other fastcasual restaurants in the U.S. include Chipotle, and Panera.

Bonnie Riggs is a restaurant expert with NPD. She has followed Americans’restaurant habits for almost 30 years. She says one reason Americans likefast casual food is because it’s new.

“They are creative, they are innovative, they are something different and welike to try new things.”

Ms. Riggs says Americans made 61 billion visits to restaurants last year.Three out of four visits were to fast food restaurants, like McDonald’s. “They’ve been holding on,” she says, but traffic has stayed at the same level. Fast casual is still a small percentage of restaurant visits. She says it’s “growing by leaps and bounds,” because they meet consumers’ needs.

“They know it’s being prepared while they wait, it’s fresh, uh, fresh ingredients,quality food, good tasting food at what they say are reasonable

and affordableprices.”

Ukraine crisis: President Poroshenko orders ceasefire

Ukraine's president has said a truce agreed with pro-Russian rebels in the east must be honoured, as he ordered the army to stop fighting.

Petro Poroshenko also warned the rebels against continuing attacks on the besieged strategic town of Debaltseve.

Fighting appeared to have died down immediately after the ceasefire took effect at 22:00 GMT.

But later both the government and the separatists accused each other of mortar shelling in some places.

Earlier on Saturday, rebel leaders had also ordered their forces to stop fighting in line with the ceasefire.

Fighting had raged near Debaltseve just hours before the truce was due to kick in.

Officials say more than 5,400 people have been killed since the conflict erupted in eastern Ukraine in April, but the UN believes the actual death toll to be much higher.

The fighting followed the annexation by Russia of Ukraine's southern Crimea peninsula.

Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of sending troops and weapons to help the separatists in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions - a claim the Kremlin vehemently denies.

'Last chance'

In a national broadcast from the military headquarters in Kiev, President Poroshenko ordered the commander of what Ukraine describes as an "anti-terror operation" to observe the ceasefire.

Civilians in towns and cities across the east have been sheltering from the shelling

Mr Poroshenko expressed hopes that "perhaps the last chance [for peace] won't be lost", adding that agreements "must be honoured, and we are expecting that the ceasefire deal will be adhered to".

The president said that there was still "alarm" over the situation around Debaltseve - a strategic transport hub, where government forces have been for days besieged by the separatists.

The rebels say that they are now surrounding Debaltseve, where several thousand Ukrainian troops are believed to be stationed. Kiev denies the claim.

Donetsk rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko said earlier on Saturday that he considered the Debaltseve area was not covered by the agreed ceasefire.

The truce deal was brokered on Thursday in Minsk, Belarus by Mr Poroshenko, Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

But key issues remain to be settled, including the situation in Debaltseve.

European leaders have warned Russia that it could face additional sanctions if the agreement is not respected.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the deal offered "a glimmer of hope", but warned: "It is very important that words are followed by actions."

The Ukrainian president has warned a deal to end the war in the east is in "great danger" after heavy fighting ahead of Saturday night's ceasefire.

Petro Poroshenko also accused Russia of "significantly increasing" its offensive in spite of the peace agreement reached in Minsk on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the US said it was very concerned by reports of heavy weapons coming across the border from Russia.

More than a dozen civilians are said to have died in shelling on Friday.

It is unclear who was behind the shelling but both the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian rebels in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions accuse each other of targeting residential areas.

In New York, the UN Security Council will on Sunday meet for an emergency session to discuss the implementation of the ceasefire deal.

The presidents of France, Russia and Ukraine as well as the German chancellor - who clinched the agreement in the Belarusian capital - are also expected to discuss the issue by phone over the weekend.

'Escalation expected'

With less than 24 hours until the ceasefire is due to take effect, correspondents say the fighting shows no sign of stopping.

The fiercest battles have been around Debaltseve, a strategic town in between rebel-held areas.

Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Petro Mekhed said the rebels wanted to "raise their flag" over Debaltseve and the key port city of Mariupol before the midnight ceasefire (22:00 GMT) ceasefire kicked in.

"Ukraine is expecting an escalation and taking all necessary measures to be able to respond," Mr Mekhed told reporters.

Rebel shelling killed two people in a cafe in Shchastya, near Luhansk, on Friday as well as a young child near a school in Artemivsk, a town near Debaltseve, according to Kiev-controlled regional authorities.

Meanwhile, the rebels said at least six people had died in shelling in the city of Donetsk and town of Horlivka. The rebels accuse government forces of shelling the towns.

"After what we achieved in Minsk this is not just shelling of Ukrainian civilians and residential neighbourhoods - this is an attack on our Minsk achievements, without any explanations," President Poroshenko said.

"Unfortunately, after Minsk, Russia's offensive operations have intensified," he said, before adding: "We are still convinced that the Minsk achievements are in a big danger."

There were also reports of a government offensive near Mariupol, the city between rebel-held eastern areas and the southern Crimea peninsula, which was annexed by Russia last March.

'Serious live fire'

The new clashes have fuelled fears that the peace deal agreed in the Belarusian capital could fall through before the ceasefire starts.

The group responsible for monitoring the ceasefire said it remained hopeful despite there being "quite serious live fire" in several areas on Friday.

"We feel that the Minsk agreements are really the only available roadmap to a sustainable ceasefire," Michael Bociurkiw, spokesman for the OSCE, told the BBC.

Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of supplying weapons and personnel to the rebels but Russia denies this.

Officials say more than 5,400 people have been killed since the conflict began, but the UN believes the actual death toll to be much higher.

There has been a dramatic rise in casualties in recent days, with 263 civilians killed in populated areas between 31 January and 5 February.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said Russian conditions in ongoing negotiations in Belarus over the conflict in Ukraine are "unacceptable".

He was speaking to reporters during a break in marathon talks involving Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The four-way meeting, also being attended by the leaders of France and Germany, began late on Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning.

Thousands of people have been killed in the fighting in the east of Ukraine.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande are leading the peace initiative in Minsk.

After about 14 hours of overnight talks, Mr Poroshenko said there was "no good news yet".

He told reporters that Russia had set "conditions that I consider unacceptable". He declined to elaborate but added that there was "always hope" as talks were continuing.

They were set to focus on securing a ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons and creating a demilitarised zone.

Russia has been accused of arming and reinforcing pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine - a claim it denies.

Mr Obama urged his Russian counterpart to seize the opportunity of fresh talks to find a peaceful solution to the war that has raged since April last year.

Mr Putin is due to meet with the leaders of France, Germany and Ukraine at a summit in Belarus on Wednesday.

However, there was intense fighting in eastern Ukraine ahead of the talks.

On Tuesday, four soldiers and at least eight civilians were killed in rocket attacks on a key military base and a residential area in Kramatorsk.

Government officials said the rockets were fired from a rebel-held area, but separatists denied being behind the attack.

More than 5,400 people have died since the conflict began and civilian casualties have risen in recent weeks.

Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of sending troops and arms to support the rebels, but Russia denies this.

Visiting Kramatorsk on Tuesday, President Petro Poroshenko called for the "withdrawal of foreign troops from Ukrainian territory"

The summit in the Belarusian capital Minsk is expected to focus on securing a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons, as well as the creation of a demilitarised zone.

The BBC's diplomatic correspondent Bridget Kendall says it remains unclear what concessions President Putin might be prepared to make while he continues to deny Russian involvement.

President Obama phoned Mr Putin on the eve of the talks to reiterate US support for Ukraine, just days after he refused to rule out supplying "lethal defensive weapons" to Kiev if diplomacy fails.

Russia, however, has warned the West that sending arms to Ukraine would worsen the crisis.

Fighting on the ground intensified ahead of the talks in Minsk, with both sides attempting to make territorial gains before any possible peace agreement.

As well as the violence in Kramatorsk, there were also renewed clashes elsewhere in eastern Ukraine.

Rebels said they had cut off the last supply route for government troops holed up in Debaltseve, a railway hub near the rebel-held city of Donetsk.

Meanwhile, the commander of an ultra-nationalist volunteer group loyal to Kiev said its forces, which are based in Mariupol, were advancing on pro-Russian rebels outside the southern port city.

Мина Моисеевна, или попросту тётя Миня, была соседкой по квартире моего друга, режиссёра с киностудии имени Горького. Он нас и познакомил:

- Мина Моисеевна, - сказал он, - знаете, кто это? Это Хайт!

- Так что, - спросила она, - мне встать по стойке "смирно" или пойти помыть шею?

- Не надо, - сказал я. - Можете ходить с грязной.

Mina Moiseevna, or simply Aunty Mina, lived in a communal flat with a friend of mine, a Gorky movie studio director. He was the one who introduced us:

“Mina Moiseevna,” said he, “Do you know who this is? This is Hyte!”

“So what?” she asked. “Am I to stand in attention or go wash my neck?”

The rest of the day passed to the accompaniment of Aunty Mina’s incessant phone conversations:

Не знаю, может это звучит немного высокопарно, но для меня тётя Миня олицетворяет весь наш народ: тот же юмор, та же деловая жилка, скептическое отношение ко всему и удивительная жизненная сила. Всё, что позволило нам выжить в этом кошмарном мире!

I sat there, listening, rapt with bliss and elation! Because outside the window was Tel-Aviv, because next to me was Aunty Mina, and because, thanks be to G-d, some things in life never change.
