Историки считают, что резные камни – камеи и геммы – едва ли не первые художественные произведения, созданные человеком. Этот жанр пережил столетия и в моде до сих пор. Греческие писатели и учёные (например, Теофраст и его трактат «О камнях») не раз упоминают о камеях. Однако, первые резные камни появились намного раньше – во времена ранних цивилизаций. Родиной жанра можно считать Малую Азию и Египет. Так, всем известный скарабей (сегодня такими наводнены сувенирные рынки Египта) – одна из первых камей в истории. Сначала человек научился вырезать на камне углублённое изображение.

Исключительного расцвета глиптика (так историки искусства называют жанр резных камней) достигла в Древней Греции и Риме. Резные камни впервые стали восприниматься как украшение. Их носили главным образом в кольцах, и эти драгоценности считались мужскими. Древние философы, придерживавшиеся строгих взглядов, даже порицали своих современников за неумеренное пристрастие к инталиям и камеям, которые красовались чуть ли не на каждой фаланге (!) пальцев. За камеи убивали, грабили, ими гордились, хвастались, они считались ценным подарком.

«Камейная болезнь»
Камеями «болели» правители и придворные европейских монархов (да и сами монархи) эпохи Возрождения. Одна из самых блестящих коллекций была, например, у рода Медичи. Изменились нравы, а с ними мода, и теперь камеи стали носить не только мужчины, но и знатные дамы. Женский вариант камеи предполагал кулон на длинной цепочке или вставку в ожерелье. Средневековых (и парой столетий позже) камей немного. В основном переоправлялись те, что уже существовали. А вот восемнадцатое столетие стало отдельной эпохой в истории этого жанра. XVIII век любил камеи. Появились и первые страстные коллекционеры античных вещей, и первые династии камейных мастеров. А также «инновационные» технологии в камейном жанре, где до этого использовались главным образом полудрагоценные камни, – применение фарфора (вспомним знаменитые работы исторических британских фарфоровых мастерских Wedgwood) и резьба по кораллам и раковинам, мода на которую пришла с Сицилии и быстро охватила всю Европу.
