В 1532 г. религиозные смуты и победа в Швейцарии иконоборческой партии заставили Гольбейна покинуть Базель и отправиться в Англию, где были исполнены им в эту пору многие портреты, в том числе находящиеся ныне в Берлине, Виндзоре, Гааге, Брауншвейге и Вене.  К этому времени относятся его портреты золотых дел мастера Том. Моретта (Дрезден), сэра Ричарда Соутвеля (в галерее Уффици во Флоренции), Томаса Уайетта и его друга (в Лонгфордкастле) и другие. Ему удалось сделаться придворным живописцем короля Генриха VIII.

Знаменитая история произошла с портретом Анны Клевской, написанным художником не с натуры, а с работы другого, более слабого мастера: королю изображение девушки приглянулось, и брачный договор был заключен. Когда же невеста, оказавшаяся дебелой немкой, сошла с корабля, король пришёл в ужас и, не притронувшись к жене ни разу, подал на развод. Вторая принцесса, Кристина Датская, от брака с английским королём вежливо отказалась сама.
