Portrait of Mary I (1516-1558), Queen of England
16th Century
Oil on Panel 45.8 x 34.5 cm
On 18th February 1516, Mary Tudor was born to Katherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. She overcame great adversity to become the first widely recognised Queen regnant of England, but her brutal treatment of protestants earned her the sobriquet 'Bloody Mary', by which she is familiarly known today. This is an extremely rare contemporaneous portrait of Mary, previously with Philip Mould & Co., which derives from Antonia Mor's larger portrait c.1554, the year after her accession.
