Want to meditate and do more yoga in the new year? Learn how easy (and inexpensive) it is to make your own props, and get started!!, Just follow the easy-to-follow illustrated instructions here at http://www.FineCraftGuild.com. OM!!!!

A zafu is a cushion that is specially designed for seated meditation. Most of us simply call it meditation pillow, meditation seat or cushion, but the official term is ‘zafu’. Now you know…

It proofed quite difficult to find some half-decent instructions to make them, however, I found them! The information in this free how-to craft tutorial is from “To Forget the Self: An Illustrated Guide to Zen Meditation” by John Daishin Buksbazen, published by the Zen Center of Los Angeles, a book which is now out-of-print *.

how to make a zafu mediation pillow

Materials Needed

Fabric: Sturdy material like a cotton/polyester blend:

  • Length of cloth 59 inches long, 6 inches to 9 inches wide (depending on how high you would like your cushion to be).
  • Two circles of cloth, each with a diameter of 11 inches to 13 inches (depending on how large around you would like your cushion to be.)

Filling: Kapok fiber (or buckwheat hulls for a firmer seat)

    Free Step-by-step Tutorial

    • STEP 1. Pleat the length of cloth. There should be fourteen 3/4 inch pleats, 3 inches apart.

      How To Pleat
      a) Beginning 6-1 /2 inches from the left edge of the length, make three marks, 3/4 inch apart, thus marking out the first pleat:
free pattern step-by-step instructions meditation pillow

Three inches after the first set of pleat markings, make the second set, as indicated above. Continue doing this till you have 14 pleats. When you finish, the last pleat marking should be 3 inches from the right edge. (If you wish to have narrower pleats, of course, simply increase the number of pleats.)

      b) Next, iron the pleats and pin them. They should all be folded and ironed in toward the left-hand side. For each set of pleat markings, fold the third in toward the first as shown, and then pin as shown at below:

      free patttern meditation pillow

    • STEP 2. Now, having completed the first step, take the right edge of the pleated strip cloth and pin it to the left end of the strip, 3-1/4 inches from the left edge:
free pattern meditation cushions step 3

    • STEP 3. Mark each circle of cloth at four equidistant points. Turn pleated length of cloth inside out. Pin each circle to the pleated strip, one circle to the top edge and one to the bottom edge, at each of the four points:

      • STEP 4. Next, pin all pleats into the circles, top and bottom. Sew the circles to the length of cloth:

      • STEP 5. Turn inside out and stuff with kapok or buckwheat hulls (through opening in the side that the zafu will have) It’s best to use a lot of stuffing material. Kapok will slowly compress with use and buckwheat hulls eventually breakdown:

Sew a zipper in the opening so you can easily refill it as and when needed.

    Namaste!

I was a mentor for one of the youth at our church.  At Confirmation they are each given a different bible verse, special to them, to mark the occasion.

alt textI wanted to give my Confirmand (the sweetest girl) a gift with her bible verse so I decided to make a little zippered pouch with the bible verse sewn inside. I printed the verse onto printable fabric (purchased on a roll from Joann’s) and sewed onto the lining before stitching the pouch together.

I also covered the lining pieces and the piece with the scripture with iron on vinyl before I sewed.  I wanted her to be able to use it for make-up etc. Another bonus was that it doubled as the “gift bag” for this beautiful handmade cross .

alt text
To make a pouch begin with 4 pieces of fabric (two of outer fabric, two of lining fabric) all cut the same length as the full length of your zipper and any width you choose. Make a zipper sandwich. Place 1 piece of lining fabric face up, then the zipper and then the outer fabric right side facing down. Line up the three edges.

alt text

Make a zipper sandwich. Place 1 piece of lining fabric face up, then the zipper and then the outer fabric right side facing down. Line up the three edges. When finished and you pull fabric the back, it will look like this. Repeat this for the other side(edge) of the zipper. Make sure the fabric goes all the way to the end of the zipper.
alt text

Bring both pieces of lining to one side and both pieces of your outer fabric to the other side. Un-zip zipper at least halfway so you can turn it once it is stitched. If you forget to un-zip the zipper you won’t be able to turn your pouch right side out.

alt text

The zipper teeth should be pinned toward the lining side.  I lay the zipper ends on top of each other with teeth facing the lining side and pin. Turn right side out. Stitch opening closed by machine or slip stitch by hand.alt text

Push lining inside and you are finished!alt text

In a recent interview Luisana Lopilato revealed her workout secrets and diet regimen. The magazine quoted her as saying, "I maintain my figure with a routine of exercise and a balanced diet. I try to workout  four times a week with my personal trainer Megatlón Mariana Dalmasso. And I try to eat healthy."

Photographs of the Latin star working out with her trainer were also published. Luisana Lopilato is naturally slim and has no need to lose weight, hence she focuses on toning her muscles with very light weights. She makes time for her workouts early in the morning when her body's fresh and light.

The workout begins with ten minutes of walking, essential to loosen the joints and warm-up the muscles. Luisana then uses a weight bar, lifting it from the ground using her legs, back, and arms...this is done ten times (repetitions in one set) at a stretch and then repeated for four more sets, with a break of three minutes between each set.

Luisana Lopilato workout

Luisana Lopilato then uses light weights to workout her arms. She has special ankle weights attached to her feet, which help in working out the legs. Using light weights is called strength training, which increases muscle and bone strength in women. This is extremely important since women in their old age are bound to suffer from osteoporosis: a disease that makes older women's bones thin and weak. Luisana jogs in step with these weights attached to her feet and holding the light weights in each hand.

Luisana Lopilato's trainer in these pictures is actually Carolina Anan, who was her trainer a year ago. Carolina pushes Luisana to lift her legs sideways so that her hips and thighs can get toned up.

Luisana Lopilato

Luisana also worksout her abs by doing crunches and then does leg raises for her shapely buttocks and lower back. You must know that strength training using light weights will tone the muscles and increase bone strength...it will not make you muscular.

Sweating and tired from her workout Luisana takes a healthy fruit drink, which gives her body energy and essential salts.

And for this reason the Latin star is willing to pose in her bikini for a fruit drink brand!

Luisana Lopilato starts her day with a light breakfast, two toast with cheese spread and egg white. This gives her the protein that her muscles need after the intense workout.

Lunch is taken at the time she's shooting for one of her TV shows; this can be either chicken salad, or rice with pumpkin pie. Sometime in the late afternoon or evening Luisana eats a bowl of yogurt or cereal, whichever is available.

Well that's nice, but what does this athletic model eat to maintain her figure? What is Marisa Miller's diet?

The athletic model doesn’t starve herself to get that perfectly photogenic body. "A lot of it is genes," says Miller of her 5-foot-10 and 110 pound frame. "
I’m naturally slim." She eats healthy foods, does sit-ups, Yoga and stretches, but that’s about it.

So what was it like for Marisa when she was growing up?

Born (August 6 1978) and raised in Santa Cruz, California, Marisa Miller studied at Monte Vista Christian High School in Watsonville....her birth name was Marisa Bertetta. As a teenager she had more developed breasts than other girls, and for this reason was always trying to keep her body covered. Even when going to the beach the self-conscious and shy Marisa would dress in shorts and t-shirts!

Fortunately Marisa Bertetta developed interest in sports like volleyball, surfing, football, and swimming; these physical activities gave her self-esteem and confidence in her body. They also helped to tone and shape her beautiful figure. By the time she turned 16 Marisa had entered the modeling world.

Marisa Miller in green

Athletic model Marisa Miller says different things about her diet in different interviews. Early in her modeling career the gorgeous California girl said that she ate everything and did not put on wieght because that's the way her body metabolism worked.

Marisa Miller beautiful

And her love of sports gave her all the workouts she needed. Marisa Miller had said back then (2001) that she didn't own a weighing scale and did not worry about what she weighed! She trusted on sports and surfing to burn off any excess calories from her eat-everything diet.

Later of course she started doing Yoga and eating healthy food. Then there was this piece from one of the fitness magazines:

Marisa Miller and Aida Turturro have both given shout-outs to organic grain bread recently. Obviously these women have two very different body types—but in this case, that bodes well for the bread. For Marisa, a surfer and swimsuit model, it’s a diet staple; the complex carbs keep her from gorging.

Was this Marisa Miller actually dieting or was it another one of those celebrity endorsements?

Then last year Marisa Miller and Heidi Klum, while promoting Victoria Secrets new bra, siad that they ate well. Marisa Miller said, “I love my curves, and I love to eat. It’s definitely important that you exercise. And I exercise, and I eat right. There’s definitely no way I could be a model if I had to starve.”

She was certainly talking about being a swimsuit model! And the other swimsuit models reveal something about Sports Illustrated on dieting:
NYMag
They tell you you better not go on a diet before the shoot," said Bar Refaeli at the 2008 issue launch at 7 World Trade Center on Tuesday. “Girls tend to think, Oh my God, I have to be in swimwear, I have to look amazing. They just say, ‘You better not, girl!’ And they just let you eat all the time during the photo shoot. They love that; they love their girls healthy.”

Could this be true? Is the world really so totally unfair? We went to model Julie Henderson for confirmation. “Oh yeah," she concurred. "They were like, ‘You’re too skinny. Start eating cheeseburgers.’ That’s when I was like, This magazine’s for me.”

Henderson, who hails from Texas, explained the magazine’s rationale simply: “They’re like, the bigger the boobs, the bigger the butt, the better.” Refaeli chimed in, laughing, “Why do you think I’m here? Why do you think I’m working for them?”

SI Group president Mark Ford put the company’s philosophy in a more, um, socially enlightened context. “We care about young women. I have two daughters, and, you know, beauty comes in a lot of forms, and you don’t have to be waiflike to be a beautiful woman. And certainly, we support that,” Ford told us.

And the latest fitness fad of gorgeous Marisa Miller is....BOXING!
Right now I’m boxing, which isn’t making my knuckles look very good,” says Marisa. "But it’s so much fun—it’s the most intense cardio I’ve ever done in my life, and it works your whole body...It’s good to keep it new so you don’t get bored.”
Marisa Miller booty
Seems to be the same with Marisa Miller's diet, trying something new each time. And because her body metabolism is so great she can get away with these dieting fads! But now that she's turning 30 won't her metabolism slow down? What will she eat from now on?

Quotes

“I’m a curvy girl. I’m never going to be the thinnest person in Hollywood, but the truth is, I don’t want to be, I went through periods when I said I can’t have this or I can’t have that. Now I don’t deprive myself. My main issue is to never let myself get too hungry. I make sure I eat every three hours or so, mostly proteins, good carbs, and veggies and salads. I love M & Ms! These days, if I want some, I have them. And by giving myself that permission, I found that I don’t crave sweets as much anymore.”
