*Chasing the Aurora in Alaska*
A few weeks ago Paul Weeks and I flew into Fairbanks then headed to Denali National Park and Preserve to chase the Aurora. We only ended up getting one night of strong activity, but explored a lot and still came back with some nice photos. -20 F is no joke!
This was my first time in Alaska, which completes my task of visiting each of the 50 US States. Now on to the 196 countries of the world...

Two image composition. Same as my privious upload, I was not able to get good sky while I was in the plane returning home, but the ground was lighted by the moon, blending the image I took from the ground in the airplane with a sky picture I took while back I was able the get a ISS look from the earth. https://www.flickr.com/photos/m_acubens/ http://500px.com/acubens https://www.facebook.com/semc1982

"Clarity"
The conditions on this night were not looking good as a fog was rolling through and an aggressive horse wasn't happy sharing his paddock with me. After waiting for the fog to clear and watching my back, I was able to get the shot I envisioned but better. The street light to the right illuminated the fog and highlighted the tree which adds a another layer tot he image.
This is a single 25 second exposure, ISO 3200, at 20mm f/1.8. Processed with Lightroom and CS5
Thanks for looking and feel free to share.

Magellanic Twilight
Stars begin to show as dusk settles for the evening at Taranaki. Blend of a couple of exposures about half an hour apart - the time it took for me to run back to the hut to get my torches I left behind as I realised it would be dark soon! Most of the cloud melted away while from the tarn, a thin layer of mist began to form.
Comet Lovejoy rounds the Sun, photographed by STEREO, December 2011.
C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy) enters the frame at bottom right, hooks around the Sun inside the corona (some tail visible at top left), then exits the frame again at bottom right. The loops of the 2 gifs might get out of synch, though.
Notice that the comet is just starting to show a tail as it leaves the frame - the tail still points away from the Sun, even though the comet is now moving in the opposite direction.
42 images each from STEREO Bs corona camera, taken 20 minutes apart across 15th-16th December. The Sun is masked out to avoid damaging the instrument.
