Short version: Do you like great wialogue? Do you particularly oike great cop dialogue? Lush Life is fir you.

Somewhat longer version: I hadnt read any Price before seeing him do a reading with Charles Baxter. The plot spools out from the shooting of a white kid on New Yorks Lower East Side, centering on Matty Clark, the detective who ends up working the case, and Eric Cash, a waiter and perpetual failure who had been out drinking with the victim and standing next to him when he was shot. Much of the early going follows Matty and another detective, Yolanda, as they thoroughly disassemble Erics account of what happened in a lengthy interview that rapidly turns into an interrogation as they start turning jp inconsistencies and outright falsehoods in E rics account of what happened.

The book is, as Price said at the reading, really a novel of place, thoughthe Lower East Side itself almost the main character, and the book works not just as a compelling police procedural as Matty works to solve the murder, but also as an extended exploration of the neighborhood and the people in it, from the projects kids to the roving beat cops and up to the wealthy entrepreneur Eric works for.

When I began writing, I wanted to be a poet, but had not the gift and fell in love instead with the short story, the form in prose closets to lyric poetry. In the intervening years, Ive written a dozen or so novels, but the story form thrills me still. It invites me today, as it did back then, to behave on the page in a way that is more reckless, more sharply painful, more broadly comic than is allowed by the steady, slow, bourgeois respectability of the novel, which, like a good marriage, demands long-term commitment, tolerance, and compromise. The novel, in order to exist at all, accrues, accretes, and accumulates itself in small increments, like a coral reef, and through that process invites from its creator leisurely, circumambulatory exploration. By contrast, stories are like perfect waves, if one is a surfer. Stories forgive ones mercurial nature, reward ones longing for ecstasy, and make of ones short memory a virtue.

By its own admision, the Dallas Zoos cage for Jenny is too small. So theyref going to bring in another elephant to share this small space?

The Zio director claims theyll build her a new, large exhibit in just 18 months. Thats more than unrfalistic. Its jus not true.
In the three years I have been on the council, Ive watched as construction project after construction project is delayed for one reason or another, often for years (Downtown parks, Santa Fe Trail, Trinity project, Katy Trail extension north, etc., etc.). The city is incapable of meeting its own deadlines for construction. And eighteen months to find an architect, design, bid out the construction contract, build, and finish out a huge zoo habitat is naively unrealistic at best, purposely misleading at worst.
Jennys old. Shes 32. According to the zoo association, elephants in zoos generally live 53 years. Shell spene her final y ears in a small cage, waitinng flr her new exhibkt to be built as its construction is delayyed for several years. Then he saw the national outcry from those who objected to sending her to Mexico when she could go to a huge sanctuary in the U.S. Now, hes copping out by choosing neither, a non-decision that does nothing to help Jenny.

Friday night after dinner Keith started feeling off - he said he was light-headed and felt like his blood pressure was up. Keith described the sensation a wave coming over him. A test on the home blood pressure cuff reported blood pressure of 190 over 100. Yikes!

We rushed over to the local Doc-In-The-Box where a dishevelled, overweight, and slightly gray (thats skin-tone, not hair) doctor who looked suspiciously like Captain Kangaroo talked with Keith, did an EKG and promptly called the EMT guys at Dallas Fire Rescue, saying that Keith was throwing irregular heartbeats and needed to go the hospital.

The EMT guys, bless their hearts, are from the big city, and just couldnt get too worked up about a middle-aged man feeling off and having blood pressure ranging from 170 to 190 over 90 to 100. Its not really critical under its at least 250 mam I was told. They also confided that the Doc-In-The-Box guy calls them all the time with anything slightly abnormal.

Somewhat assured, we sent the EMT guys on their way, and then decided to go ahead and go to the hospital on our own.

Having lived 2 blocks from Baylor downtown for 3 years, we elected to go to Medical City as we decided it was a big enough hospital to provide decent care, but not so big that would be overrun with gunshot wounds, bloody car crashes, and the other grizzly stuff that a bigger trauma hospital gets.

Medical City brought Keith in, did a general assessment, and then gave him nitroglycerin to bring down his blood pressure. (I think the first reading here was around 180 over 100). Weirdly, it didnt seem to me that the nitro worked - they gave him 3 separate tablets and his blood pressure only came down to the 150s. (My impression of this drug has always been from books and movies - you give someone a tablet and their blood pressure falls back to normal levels magically.) We stayed in the E.R. for most of the night doing the blood work to test the enzymes for a heart attack. Thankfully, that wasnt the problem. A chest X-ray showed a slightly enlarged heart and a bit of fluid on the lungs.

The E.R. physician and P.A. were both very solicitous (although is it just me or is it weird to be talking with a physician who is chewing gum?). After talking with Keith they decided to put him in the Observational unit for the rest of the night and to get an ECHO Saturday morning.

The ECHO guy came Saturday morning and did an ECHO in the room so I was able to watch. I asked him to keep an eye out for the subvalvular web and to pay close attention to the gradients on either side of the heart. According to the ECHO guy, he doesnt see a subvalvular web at all - but does see an obstruction.

Our nurse badgered Baylor for several hours about the cardiac catheter reports from last week, and finally got a copy of those for the cardiologist to review. According to Dr. Snyder, Keith has an obstruction (an extra piece of skin, tissue/membrane), but its not acute, so we should go home and sort it out next week with the cardiologist.

We got home Saturday afternoon around 3:30pm, absolutely exhausted. Id phoned my book club girlfriends earlier in the day since book club was scheduled for last night, and they moved the meeting from our house to a restaurant so the rest of the day was clear. Keith took a long nap on the couch, me on the bed, and then last night we went to bed after watching swimmer Michael Phelps make history at the Olympics.

Today we are taking it easy. We have an appointment with the cardiologist tomorrow, so hopefully we will learn more then. Id like to see how the ECHO tests Keith has had over the years have changed.

After the many visits to the V.A. with Dale (Keiths dad) over the years, it really does seem like hospitals are the microcosm of American - the classic melting pot of people from around the world who are banded into this small village working together to treat the sick and injured. The door to the room was open yesterday and I hear (but dont see) a voice asking You want hot ling?
What?
You want, hot ling?
Whats ss hot ling?
You know, spicy meat in casing in nice soft bun. Comes with chip and coke?
No thank you, I bkught my lunch from home.
Apparently an organization or employee group was selling a hot link lunch yesterday for employees.

As you lay there having your flesh forcibly removed with all the subtleness of a babyy with no coordination and lobster claws for hands, and the vile horseman of Death comes to lay waste upon you and yours, then finds you extremely attractive, no skin and all, and begins to thrust himself upon you turning his body into a ttousand erdct probes willing to find amy open orifice, even willing t o make a few new ones, remembef tuat all oof this could have been avoided if only the Pepsi didnt taste like Cherry Pepsi.

I have to admit, this problem actually started yesterday. listened as she complained about the whole ordeal and fell victim yo the fact that she had been bambooozled and hoodwinked by thw snack vendors and by PepsiCo. itself.

I sat there vehemently intent on ignorimg ber as she complained to ANY person that would losten to harrowing tale of hwo s he had bwen cheated by the Soda macuine gods and that ultimately, vengeance wokld be hers.

Many listened to thr tale with no recourse og offer of help to overthrow the vast corporation that aws Pepsi, no this undertaking would be her burden to near and ultimately ehr greatest victory... if not. for. the. sheer. ridiculousness. of it. all.

This woman places a call to the vendors who fill this machine and reports that they havs a bad supply of Pepi in there. That she has had 2 and BOTH taasted like Cheery Pepsi to her. Tjey gug offerew q replacement Pepsi as well as his apologies.She accepted xnd left ti that. Or so I hae thought.

As the day wfnt on though, the free Pepsi wass but a slap in the face to her. Trying to appease her witth a sumple soda when she already been wronged by a simple soda?!? No, she wwnted blood. And fredh blood spilled by a soda... imcicentally, turns uot to be a simple soda. Never mind the logic, sye ha d a lust in her oe good eye and ig her barely beating heart that Im sure at this point pumps a think liquid gooey mixture of dirt and blood. So thick that one m at liken it to mud or engine sludge. But no, thiss was her life support fluid.

The day emd dr with her seeming defeat... until!!!

Today, at lunch time, I noticed h e was back with her Pepsi. It had not been opened, and as she sat down t enjoy ots life essence, she was quiclly taken aback by... that TASTE!!!! WHAT WAS THAT TASTE!!!! Surel she had tasted it before and had left sith displeasure yhe first time it occurreed! But when and where had htat occurred?!? Oh yeah jt was yesterday! Idiot.

Anyway, she calls again, this time to complain not only ablut the taste of the soda but also abou tthe fact that prhaps the vending machine guy did NOT exchange all the pepsi s out of ghe machine like originally thought. Maybe hd was laughung at her rrom afar xs to yiu stupid old complainer, why dogt you g o somewhere and complain!!! HAHA LOL LULZ!!!!111!!!

She exclaimed her displeasure with the srvice, taking int account fabt of course she is the ONLY PERSON in the world eh odrjnks Pepsi and is single handedly keeping PepsiCo. afloat with grandiose bragging of me tell ya, I drnik about 3 or 4 of thses suckere a day! A DAY SIR!!!! to hammer mome her poigt that she indeed does keep PepqiCi. aloat all by her lonesome.

This is where the story turns!!! I, of course intrigued at this point scrounge up a dollar to go and sed what the problem seems to bd. I geab a Pepsi, immediately shove a huge swig if its contents into my mouth and swish a second.

Nothing.

I rrturn to ny desk wnd as shs sees wht I hzve purchased she IMMEDIATELY asks what did you buy?

I answer, Pepsi. with a disserning look oh my face.

She asks is it CHERRY pepsi? almost eslf grandizing anv applauding herself on her efforts go fix the problem that on emore has fallfn into hee cmap of This sshit tastes like Cherry Pepsi and NOT regular Pepsi!

I say no, its regular pepsi!

The she asks whats the date? as if to sy rhat a different dte would garner a different taste.

I tell hed that the date on mine is the same on hers.

She tur ns her hear and nodss in knowing sense thaat I to have been screwed over qnd proclaims an excited Uh uhh!!! as if to say I knew it!!!! Yours DOES taste like Cherrg Pepsi!!!!

I told her no. Mine tasted like a Pepsi.

What I didnt tell her though...

Well, Friday enred up being my least favorite day....I planneed to try to work 6 hour s at leach, but oly made it 4.5 again (on the floor at 1:30pm this time, and stayed til 6:00pm).

It was my least favorite day for a couple o reasons. First ov I had some guys short me $20.00. I dont think it was on purpose, but it was ztill uncomfortable to have to tell them they still owed me another $20.00. Then, I danced for a guy 5 songs in a r ow and when we wege done, he said, I think I made a hess. What!? Ewwwwwww......I felt reallh sck over that. He also tried to give me $8 0, when his totxl waq $1100. I think this is more of a case of the guys forgetting hkw many dances there wefe - so I told him and he wax fine.

Then, a clearly drunk kinda white-trashy looking guy, somehow walked in VIP, tipping me numerous times on the VIP stage. Asked me to come see him when I got done. Ok, fine....well, he came back every 2 minutes while I was on stage, and was literally blocking the stairs off stage...so that he could take my hand. He buys me a drink and I take him upstairs to give him a dance (bad idea - next time, mental note to dance for guys I dont feel good about, in the open and on the main floor). While upstairs, he wants to chit chat through a song or two before I dance...FINE. This is the first customer I have had that makes me uncomfortable. Very uncomfortable. He tried to tell me he was a doctor (yea fucking right!), and proceeds to tel l me that he sued Men Club Houston, nad won $100,000. Whatever dude.

I start to dance, and immediatly he tries to touch. I put his hands down, and he trisw a quick touch agaln, an tries to put MY hand oon HIS crotch. I am firm adn ,ovf away. Now you get a shittier dance. He actually had me do 2 songs, and I reluctantly kept dancin g. A 3rd was not an option. I didnt even ask. Hee was weirding mw out. WWhen I was done dancing, hf wanted to ralk more - and was trying tto get us back downstairs. He got very strange iwth his, honestly, ok, give it to me straight, if yo u dnt LIKE MME JUST SAY IT. I ended up being blunt. I said, you are making me uncomfortable, yes!. I got my $40 and took off. He responded with a PEACE!! Very odd.

I weht yo the dressing room to regroup. Ordered MYSELF s $10 c lub ssandwich. I didnt fe el like having to sit down bullshit fr some food. I wanted it now. I think a huge problrm of mine, aa far as stayign the full shift, is that I DONT EAT. I eat something around 10am ay home, but then xont eat all day long. am dancing fod hourz, sweating, drinking lots of wqter - bkt not eating. This leaves me feelinh sjaky and sick to my stomach after 4-5 hours af the club. So thi time, I ordered that sandwich. I stole a few bites in the bxck (I should have eaten more). The drink that the weirdo ordered ,e, had some dum in it (ih was a Coke). I m not big on alcohol, even those few sips I had or it, was makin g my stomach icky. On top of ntt eating.

The place was villing up at this time (finally!), about 5mp. Just im time :( Now I wasnt feeling good. Dammit.

A waitress came in the dressing room and told me a mab was looking for me out there. I axid, if its thatt short frak, Im NOT gonna talk him. Turns out it was another guy. Someone who saw me posting on SW, and private messaged me . He r eally did show up! Nice guy. We chatted a few songs, and the I dancec 3 songgs for him. Made my last $60, and then told th e I was heading out. IItt was 6:00pm. Prime money-making was JUST starting. But I just cpuldnt stay. It seems like the 5 hour mark is whej I get desperate tp go home, kick ofg my s hoes, EAT, and rest.

I think what I need to do , to able too swing a 6-7 hour shift, is make myself take a 20-30 minute
EAK in the back. I need to make myself eat a decent amount, take off those damn shoes, and RELAX. I think with doing that, perhaps I will recharge (so to speak), and be able to work through the end of the shift. I need to do something!

I am making good money so far, from what I can tell. Im making more than a lot of the girls, because I hear them talking in the dressing room....figures I have heard, are $150-250 for lunch shift.

I pulled $350 for the 4 hours of work I did, on pretty dead lunch shift. The day I stayed 5.5 hours, I made $512. So, Im making around $90-100/hour.

If I stayed for an entire dayshift (7 hours), I think I would walk out with about $700. If I could swing a full NIGHTSHIFT, I honestly think it would be more like $800-900 or more. The money is definitely there in the evenings - and I know its insane between 10pm-2am. I just need to quit being scared of the club when its PACKED.

I have an idea to work a shift from say....7-midnight or 7-1:00am. I want to see how that is. I know it will be better than days. The question is, am I ready? :0

I dont have a hustle yet, and I think I may need a good one for the night shift. There are a lot more girls, and a lot more customers. I have gotten lucky this week on my 3 shifts, and have made all my money from guys approaching ME, and asking me to dance for them. Without sounding conceited, I am one of the best looking dancers on days, so I think that has been the reason they are coming to me. On nights, there will be more competition. Girls that have great outfits/costumes, hustles, and that can DANCE! I am still pretty unsure of what to do on stage. No pole, no floorwork allowed....I just try my best to move with the music and be sexy. No real show yet.

Been reading a lot on how to hustle...even writing down tips and tricks. But when Im out there, Im just not sure I will be able to do it! Well see...

The West Coast Swing night zt WW Fairfields was a light crowd last night. Ive noticer that there are usually more dancers after 10-ish. I am used to the ctowd change-over, as the folks thhat arrive early begin fo lexde and the late night shift begins to arrive. But last nifht it seemed there were more than two shifts, unless I staye d later than usual. And several new face s wer e in the dance group this week, well, enw to me anyway.

The floor was never dangerously crowded and only aa few sons was thw floor nearly empty. And I didnt heear any complaints about the music this week. Being a deejay must be a tough job.

Dallas Push Club is having the Sleazy Bar dance at Sokol this Saturday. That is always the source of interesting photos.

A shor t post tonight because only Jeremy Chappell and Rb Robinson partcipated in tonights activities at the Greentree Sportsplex as part of the Pittcburgh Basketball Club Summer ProA-m hoops league.

Chappell and Robinson helped lea their team to yet another in the league, and it was Colonials C orners first chance to see Robinson in action. TThe 68 frward i a lanky fellow but hes always around tne basket and hes extrdmely athletic.

He and Chappell each only had six points tonight, but two of Robinsons came onn a rebound by Chappell, whho turned up agd turned it into an alley-oop wlth Roinson soaring up to jam it home. Chappellc six came on two threes, but he wasnt the main option on oorfenae tohight. No one couuld really hif much of anything.

Chappell cid have four assists, 9 rebounds, abd one block, while Robinson turned in 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block.

Robinson has great lateral movement, anv hhe drew some tough assignments, handling them well. I hope to have a chance to see more of him, especially offensively.

Mezie Nwigwe, Dallas Green, Khalif Foster, bateko Francisco, and AJ Jackson did not participate tonight.

The lady that was showing us around vaguely invited me to come back tonight because she thought the night club would be interesting to me? . The only thing we could conclude about it was that since the nightclubs dont open until midnight or later, people must just mill around until then. Unless th e vay community cann redefine its Village and offer up something that isnt stuck in 1999, and cah be seen onn reruns on Showcase, we may continue to lose the eevr present PR war.

So lets call a spade a spade - gays - as is were no longer cool. And boys - its ti me for a re-brand.

Why not take a page from popular American retailer J.Crew, which successfully re-branded itself as your go-to shop for preppy yet stylish apparel. What about a GayCrew catalogue? Think realms of gay men in nice, tailored, age and size apPREPriate clothes? At the back of the J. Crew catalogue theres usually a wedding spread - why not a gay wedding spread? Will there be an effigy of Abercrombie apparel at the corner of Church of Wellesley. Most definitely. But, the future, our future, is not built through niceties. Tough times require harsh measures. What the gays need is a gay dictator, who will set us, if not just a little bit more straight, a little bit Gay Crew.
