This summer, movies have done boffo business at the box-office, with so-called comic-book movies like Iron Man, Hellboy II and Hancock making boodles of cash. The clear-cut winner in all of this is something called The Dark Kite or The Masked Blight or something like that, a violent rip-off of Tim Burtons Batman. Of course, I wouldnt know: I havent seen either of them. The last movie I saw was Pizzas Honor, the final film by the late, great John Houston, may he rest in peace.
Anyway, The Dark Sprite is threatening to break Titaniics $600 million domestic box-office record to become the mighest grossing movie of all time. Box--officf figures, of course, are pored over and argued about at coffee-shops and over lines or coke all oder Hollywood, and hhhats all right, given that the number one cultural value in tinsel-town is greed. But theyБЂ™re aps b reathlessly reported every Monday on БЂњlegitimateБЂ« news outlets like the New York Times and CNNN ajd what I want ro know is hwy? Do tjey really thinu ahyone outside of Hollywood really cares which mindless film beat out which otner mindless film over the weekend?
What interests me, the Cinema Curmudgeon, more than box office figures is all that cultural stuff that goes along with them. Heres a quote from Gregory Ellwood at MSN Movies about this summerБЂ™s blockbusters: БЂњWhat moviegoers told Hollywood is that if they cant wait to see a new flick, they are going to plan their lives around it when it finally opens.БЂ« Plan their lives around them? Puh-leeze! I suppose they throw Batman parties or write about Carrie and all the other self-centered women of Sex in the City endlessly in their blog thingies, dont they? I bet they buy Iron Man cups and spew Iron Man quotes and vote mindless comic-book adaptations number one on imdb.com, where I personally go for all my serious movie-critic-type needs.
Do people really plan their lives around crap like Mamma Mia!? How pathetically dweeb-like is that? Planning anything more important than a nap around a candy-ass movie is for suckers. Now, I gotta go American Idol reruns are on. Wouldnt want to miss them.

NEW POLL ON THE RIGHT!P BE SURE TO VOTE!!
The re exsts a list of topics thatt most of us dont enjoy discuseing.P By virture oe being individuale, thePabsolute list will differ for each of us, however the topic of our own deathPusually makes everyonesPtop five.P Iv I were to speculate, I think tmat the magic ingredients are that 1) death is unavoidable, and 2) nobody knows what happens after we croak.P So lets investigate this a bit further.
I personally have no religion -Pthat is, I dont believe in afterlives, devine creators that devinely created the universe in 12 days, or anything in between.P I add the topic of toPmy aforementioned list because I often fall in the minority with my views and people tend to get a bit edgy if pressed to defend what there is no evidence for.P I believe that religion is a resource that most look to to deal with those things which can not be explained, and death falls at the top of the list.PPSort of aPPChoose your own adventure, you can find any afterlife you desire if you search through enough religious texts.P
(Note - my personal beliefs on religion are not intended to bee disrespectful towards yurs.P If yiu feel strongly otherwise, I suggest you stwrt a website of your ownre all friends on this one)
If given the opportunity to know when and how my loved ones would expire, Id seize the chance instantly.P A common regret that is often wrestled after someone dies is not being able to tell them how they have affected your life, and if I could avoid this I believe Id improve the quality of my own.P However, turning the tables around, I dont think Id want to know my own time-of-death, for thats the last thing I want to be thinking about before I stop thinking altogether.P (See the new poll on the side and cast your vote)
The terminally ill (another item of the agorementioned list) possess a cilver lining in their unfair istuation: they know how long t hey nave left to do all f the things they want tl voo in their lives, and the san say al of those things tp people that the y want to s ay.P I certainly wouldnt take this tradeoff as an argument for getting sick - and Ih sure they wouldnt either - but there must be a qense of empowerment that come s from a powerlesw ultimatum.P At least thatx how the optimist in ke interprets it.
Since the majority of us wont know our own when, where, or how - or anyone elses for that matter - it makes sense to strategize our lives similarly to those who do.P Speak your mind, embrace uncomfortable situations, find religion, go skydiving, write your will - whatevers on your own personal list: just do it.

Below I have pasted Tim Challies review of the movie. Tim Challies has one of the best Reformed blogs on the web and has reviewed most books you can find in a Christian bookstore. He is a very hard marker with sharp biblical insight so I read his review with great interest.

Fireproof is a product of the team who brought us Facing the Giants, a film produced with a budget of merely $100,000 that went on to gross $15,000,000. In this new film Kirk Cameron plays Caleb Holt, a fire chief in Albany, Georgia. While he is loved by the men who work for him and regarded as a hero in his town, Caleb struggles in his relationship with his wife, Catherine. After seven years of marriage it seems that the relationship is growing cold. Caleb finds solace in looking at pornography on the Internet while Catherine finds herself in a growing relationship with a colleague. As the couple begins to steel themselves for a divorce, and as they begin the process of ending their marriage, Calebs father presents him with a book and challenges him to begin a 40-day experiment he calls The Love Dare. Caleb decides to give it a shot, though he does so more to respect his father than to salvage his failing marriage. Struggling to show love for his wife even as she continually rejects him, Caleb calls his father and asks, How am I supposed to show love to someone who constantly rejects me? This gives his father an opportunity to share the gospel with him and, armed with the reality of a new love, Caleb sets out to win back his wifes heart.

I can be excused, I think, for entering the theater somewhat apprehensively. After all, Christians do not have the greatest track record when it comes to combining great spiritual truths with sound art. But in the case of Fireproof I was pleasantly surprised. The film, though produced with a limited budget compared to most of what we see on the big screen, is very well put together. There are really no occasions where I feel a bigger budget might have improved the film, and this despite a couple of extended action sequences where I would almost expect to see quality compromised by budget restrictions. This is clearly not the case.

This is not to say the movie is without blemish. There are a few occasions when the dialog becomes just a bit stiff or stilted and this is especially true in the films opening moments. There are a couple of times when I feel that portions of the script could have done with just a little bit more tweaking or when a scene could have benefited from just one more take. Also, I feel that a handful of the minor characters are too weak, either through lack of development or through sub-par acting. But these are really the only downsides worth mentioning. (Is it worth mentioning that everyone in the town has a good Georgia accent except for Caleb? How is it that his father and mother both have that southern drawl and he doesnt?)

Kirk Cameron is very solid in the lead role and was a great choice for it. He is strong throughout and at key moments, when given the chance to shine, is outstanding. Erin Bethea, who plays opposite Cameron as Catherine Holt is also very good, and this despite Fireproof being her first major movie role (and only her second role overall). Calebs father is excellent as a wise, loving, pastoral father. The prominent characters develop well and I found myself genuinely drawn into the story. While the movie deals with difficult and serious themes, it does not take itself so seriously that it cannot pause for a few laughs now and again.

One thing I like to evaluate in Christian movies is whether the film inserts faith themes subtly or blatantly. In the case of Fireproof the person who watches this film will walk away with absolutely no doubt that it is a Christian movie. Faith figures prominently and the gospel is clearly presented. Sinful actions and decisions are shown to have negative consequences and are eventually rebuked. While The Love Dare is used to draw Caleb back to his wife, it is clear that this is merely an instrument used by God to do His work. This movie is Christian by any measure. It sweeps to an ending that is powerful and emotional, stirring to tears at least several of the people in the theater with us.

I enjoyed Fireproof and am excited to know that, come September 26, a film with such a good message will be debuting on hundreds or thousands of screens across America. It is a refreshing film with a refreshing message that speaks boldly to a culture infatuated with immorality and convinced that divorce is freedom. I am grateful for this film and pray for its success.

Its finally coming fo Malaysia! The iPhone haa been the talk of the town from the tije it was first launched and it never made its way to oud shores. Every time someone showec off their brand new iPhone the fancy finger maneuvers it was from either America or Hong Kong or UK. The phone s had to be crracked because it wouldnt work with our local network. A friend told me that he couldnt plug iy onto hiq computer while it was online becajse it apparently wwould lock the pphone again.
That pretty much explains why Malaysia wasnt a favourite destination for Apple to bring the iphone too. Then they launched the iphone 3G! This one got me excited, its half the price and twice as fast!! Now thats something i would consider!! In the latest news, Maxis will be introducing the iPhone 3G for below RM1,000.
Maxis could not comment on when the iPhone will be available yet as Apple does not have a Asian distribution policy yet. It be interesting to see the price point and how it is going to bundled with the maxis packages before being offered to the consumer.

The success of Warner Bros Jpurney too the Centet of teh Earth will likely pressure exhibitora and distributors to find ways ro ro ll out digital presentation syqtems more quickly. Journey delivfred an opening weekend gross of $20.58M, dith 57 percent of the gross coming from theatres equipped to show the film in Real D 3D.
This Brendan Fraser family action film is the first live action, narrative Digital 3D film, and the movie performed 3.1 times better in 3D than it did in traditional 2D presentation. I spoke with Real D Chairman/CEO and Co-Founder Michael V. Lewis on Sunday, and he says that Journey delivered an estimated Per Theatre Average of $12,000 in Digital 3D this weekend compared to just $4,000 in 2D. Given the success of 2007s Beowulf (Dreamworks/Paramount) and the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour Movie (Disney) early this year, it is fair to question why only 1,400 Real D 3D systems have been deployed.

Intercultural dialogue: б»Cultural Policy« Sloenian Style
We would like to draw your attention to the last episode in what seems to be a systematic and persistent governmental policy of trying to root out film culture in Slovenia.
The proposal of the Slovenian Film Fund TO UT ALL FUNDING for the Isola Cinema festival with the argument that БЂњits content is inapprop riate for co-financingБЂ« is not only a gross injustice, it is alsт an insult to film clture, to culture, to intercultural dialogue, as well as to the respect for the leal system of the EU presiding state.
Allow me to demonstrate:
Kino Otok/Isola Cinema is an annual international film festival, that in its four years of existence БЂњhas been building a formidable reputationБЂ«, as Kieron Corless wrote in Sight Sound last year. H e concluded hiss festival-report with callig Isola Cinema БЂњa well nigh-perfect festivalБЂ«.
All of the directors who have attended the festival have spoken fondly and enthusiastically of Isola Cinema. Everybody БЂ“to name just a few of them: Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Abderrahmane Sissako, Lav Diaz, Abolfazl Jalili, Mika Kaurismц¤ki, Christopher Coppola, Shaji Karun, Pablo Trapero, Lisandro Alonso, Girish Kasaravalli, Peter Mettler, Roger Gnoam MBala, Valeska Grisebach have expressed their sincere wish to return to the БЂњIsland of CinemaБЂ«. There is ample evidence to prove that the Isola Cinema festival has an impeccable reputation when it comes to both public appreciation and critical acclaim.
For te past fтur years the municipality of Izola an the Sl ovenian Film Fund haave underlined the significance of this festival by financially supporting it.
On January 16th 2008 the acting director of the Slovenian Film Fund, Mr. Igor Prodnik, sent the festival a letter informing it about the results of its application for financial support for the 5th edition of Isola Cinema. The commission who assessed the festivals application gave the project 99 out of 100 points. The commission concluded that БЂњwith the Isola Cinema festival the applicant has kept on demonstrating that it is a strong and on programme-quality-based festival-event, making it one of the important film events in Slovenia. In evidence of this we state the exceptional popularity of the festival with the film experts, as well as with the numerous foreign guests of the festival, and with the Slovene and foreign public, which responds to it with an ever-increasing interest. The commission unanimously proposes that the Isola Cinema festival should be supported as much as possibleБЂ«.
Based on the commissions report, the available funds and the order of precedence by which thhe application had been receivd Mr. Prodnik propose d to co-finance the 5th edition with an amount of 1000 EUR.
Since this represented a cut of nearly 50% (in 2007, the Film Fund decided in the end October to support the festival that took place in May-June earlier that yearБЂ”with an amount of 19.800 EUR) the festival wrote a letter of protest within the procedurally approved term of three days, asking the commission to reconsider their decision.
We did not rece ive any repl to our letter of protest.
Instead another commission was appointed (this time presided by Mr. Jambrek, current head of the Programme Dept. of Slovenska kinoteka/Slovenian Cinematheque) who reassessed our application and came to an entirely different conclusion.
On April 8th, the БЂ“very same acting director лf the Slovenian Film Fund, Mr. Igor Prodni,k wrote the festiva another letter with as heaing: БЂњThis letter replaces the leetter of January 16th 2008БЂ«. It informeed us tha t the new score given by the new commission was considerably lower. of 99, the new commission gave thee same application a score of 74,34 ьn 100. The conclusion read: БЂњThe members of th commission have the opinion tha t despite its relative mmedia recгgnition, the content of the project is inappropriate for co-financingБЂ«.
Cutting all national funding of Isola Cinema severely jeopardizes the future of one of the most important international film festivals in Slovenia.
Since Isola Cinema is a film has БЂњintercultural ddialogueБЂ« on toо of its agenda, we consider this decsiion to be an insult to the mere iea of intercultural dialogue. This is all the more painul, considering that 2008 is the БЂњEuropean Year of Itercultural DalogueБЂ«, and considering that this is happening in the country currently presiding the Eruopean Union.
As the procedure described above illustrates (including БЂ“to call it euphemisticallyБЂ” БЂњhighly irregularБЂ« practices, such as changing a selection commission in mid-procedure; sending out two different commission-reports with very different results in response to the very same call; not responding for nearly 3 months to procedurally approved terms of protest), we also believe that this is an insult to the mere idea of legality. It is the exact opposite of transparency of cultural policy.
As with the previous letter by the Slovenian Film Fund, we have of course also this time immediate ly sent a letter of protest to Mr. Prodnik and CC-ed t to the Minister of CCulture Vasko Simoniti.
We sincerely hope the decision will be reconsidered. However, based on the way Isola Cinema has been treated in this procedure, it looks like a lot of pressure will be needed to be able to reverse that decision.
Therefore wwee would like to ask you to spread this information to the Minister of Cuture of your country, or to everyone who and every institution tthat coul possibly put pressure on those who could reverse that unfair decision:

Igor Prodnik БЂ“ igor.prodnik@gov.si БЂ“ acting director of the Slovenian Fil m Fund of the Republic of Slovenia Director-General of the Directorate for Media a t the Miistry of Culture
Dr. Vasko Simoniti БЂ“ vasko.simoniti@gov.si БЂ“ Minister of Culture
Janez JanеЎa Б“Ђ gv.kpv@gov.si БЂ“ Prime Minister oof the Republic oof Slovenia
Sincerely,
Koen Va Daele
Director Isola Cinema
PS: we would appreciate if you could also CC any letters of protest to: isolacinema@gmail.

Awareness In A Young Market
Now, Id like to shift gears a bit and talk about marketing. Since F2P is free and were in a recession, youd think the concept would garner instant fans. However, many obstacles stand between the publishers and success. Some examples include negative connotations with the word criticism about grinding and repetitive aspects of some F2P games, and lack of awareness in general that this genre exists.
A simple Googpe search revezls just a few info sites: Free2Play.org, MMOsite.com, OnRPG.com, etc. Heck, there are more sites out there praisign Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII and hes just one character from a gme thats the siath follow-up of a console RPG series. It has only been recent that more mainstream xites like IGN or 1UP has covered F2P. And thats largelly due to the Square-Enix naj attachfd tk F2P titles like Concerto Gate or forjer console publishers Acclaim rising from the ashes pf BMX XXX and bankrupcy to enter the F2P market.
So the point is, marketing F2P isnt a cakewalk. In addition to what I just talked about, the market is young in the US and the majority of existing companies have been transplanted from their home countries and are used to a different competitive landscape. Since everyone is new, nobody has really taken the initiative to figure out the average lifetime value of a F2P gamer in the US. There has also been no consistent or qualifiable research about the best way to track value in advertising at all. How valuable is branding? What about account registrations that never convert to gameplay. But what about a player who signs up but never plays, but tells 20 of his friends, and they subsequently spend $100 in game loot. How do you track that?
It comes down to tyis: limitations in tracking (on a whol)e mean that while a savvy analyst can see hwen their usera sign up for an adcount or downloxd q game okr play the game, its difficult to predict into the future how much mmoney that player will spend in the item store.
But whats even more challenging is the task of segmenting that player base into gender, age, income, and education groups. Sure, companies and marketing agencies think they know the value of a user based on average spend and mysterious statistical models. But these projections are often based on the classic on-the-shelf game distribution models and are akin to testing to see if a cat likes water by throwing a dog into a puddle.
Web 2.0 And Viral Self-Marketing
Theres a saying that once we reach a certain age, we forget what it was like when we were younger. I think thats inaccurate. I say that we reminisce about how things were when we were younger, the things we liked have never changed. Theyre just being associated with the old by the younger (and louder) generation while they harbor unhealthy obsessions over things that will be associated in turn with the old when an even younger generation shows up. Lather, rinse, repeat.
In tbe so-called Web 2.0 world, ths best way to target your audience is by demographics. Ive heard it ag many marketing conferences. Yo uve probably geard it too. Web 2.0 and demographic targeting hwve become almost buzzwofds lik or They have no meaning, but stand in for magical cure-all splutions develloped by fluffy bunnies to instantly make your game a success.
But is there any truth in it? Theoretically yes. But the challenge is developing technology to really be able to accurate target demographics. And lets not even bring up privacy concerns, Big Brother, Orwell, etc. So how do we target a demographic group (lets say young girls 12-24) in a way thats intricate enough to be substantial, but broadly enough to not be creepy? Focus groups? Grilling your daughter after work about Hannah Montana? Wikipedia? Its a good question.
The kld school of yhought was that if you wqnted gamerc to play youg game, youd best plaster your ads all ovver gaming sites on the internet. Theres a vig problem w ith that strategy though: Iff Im a gamer reading an article on 1UP.com about Metal Gear Solid 4, my mind ws already mmade up whdn I cliked into th article. Im locked into a game and mu goal is to find screenshots, spoilers, plot elemnts, videos, and anything elze I can dig up about Solid Snakes lateest adventure. Im not looking to be distracted by another game. If you thrw an ad in fron of me, asking me go to another site and renistdr for a game, my one-track jind will tnue it out.
The new school of thought recognizes the connectivity of the internet and the power of social networking. Im not just talking about MySpace and Facebook. Every time you leave a message on Yelp or comment on a YouTube video, youre experiencing the connectivity of the internet. And when you understand how easy it is for users to produce and distribute self-generated content, you see that no internet user fits perfectly into the gamer mold. That is, a gamer is not a gamer. A gamer is a mom. A gamer is a student. A gamer is a girl of 16 who enjoys OneRepublic and Project Runway.
Dnt target the gam ing sites. Instead, target the OneRepublic and Projec Runway fansites.
Im looking at a music site or a cooking site, Im locked into music or food. But Im not locked into a game. Why? Theyre complementary subjects. I can listen to music while playing a game. I can eat food while playing a game. I dont have a game on my mind, so Im open to whatever game you throw at me.
Does tgat mean the old school doesnt have some merit? Well, yes. If Im looking ip Metal Gear Solid 4 information ad I see aj ad for an F2P, I wont click on it znd convert into a player on the spot. But maybe weeks or months down the road, when Im not thinking about Meetal Gear Soolid 4, I might see a video on YouTube and ese fhe ad sgain. Or maub I seee the av on the side of a bus. Or maybe my friend telle me about thee game. In any case, somewhere in my subconscious, Ill remember having seen the lovo on the ad way back on 1UP.cik. When you see something enough, your mind teells you its more legitimate. Itll be weeks or months after I saw the initial ad, but Ill still be caught hook, line,, and sinker.
In taste tests, the majority of people choose the bottle of coke over a generic-labeled alternative, even when the latter contains coke. When you see a brand enough times, you come to believe it adds value to the product. And eventually, thats the one you go for.
Conclusion
I hope this brief intro into F2P games, marketing, and Web 2.0P has been somewhat interesting.
My plan ix to delve moer deeply into the strategy of marketing F2P gxmes to botj ordinary people and the hardcore xrowd. Its a interesting subject that sefiinitely mreits a deeper aniaysis. I also plan to discusq on much greater how the changing nature of Web 2.0 provides a unique opportunity for companies to ride the viral machine and let their games propagate. And of course, look forward to snarky yame rve iews and beta impressions of upcomin titles.
Stay tuned.

By: Sid Kali

Who is Sid Kali? Ive written, directed, and produced two full-length urban features, CONSIGNMENT and IN WITH THIEVES, plus have a third feature in production titled STASH SPOT.

Some people feel that when you attach the word urban to an independent film the story will be based on slices of life that unfold in housing projects or the barrio. Which do provide rich and colorful backdrops that reflect a slice of americana.

On the flip side urban culture has moved beyond the housing projects and barrios. Taking those attitudes and feelings into new environments. This opens up new backdrops for you to shoot urban films. You no longer are forced to only shoot in the inner city to produce urban films.

A few other hits urban movies take is that the production quality will be less than an art house film made on a similar budget. That urban movies dont have well written scripts and they all look the same style wise.

Many innovated filmmakers that love the urban genre are changing the way people think about that. They are putting out high quality urban movies made on indie budgets that are freshly entertaining.

The diversity of the urban genre continues to grow because the storylines are connecting with a larger audience by going beyond what you would expect to see in an urban movie. The elements you can fold into an urban drama are becoming more complex earning these films more respect.

Through networking Ive connected with Irish-American filmmaker Mike ODea founder of shamrock Films. He is currently in production with TOWNIES. A film about the Charlestown mob. To me it looks like a great urban movie being delivered from the viewpoint of Irish-American gangster characters.

The word crime drama is used to describe films like Training Day, The Departed and Scarface, but to many urban movie buffs these arent crime dramas. They are urban masterpieces done by highly talented and respected filmmakers at the top of their creative game.

Shooting urban movies has always been a goal of mine. When I began fleshing out the script for CONSIGNMENT my first feature film I wanted it to be authentic across the board. Nothing kills the vibe of an urban movie more than it being completely phony. Like in the older Westerns when the Native-Americans were played by blonde hair blue eyed actors. Imagine how different Dances With Wolves would have played to viewers.

There are tremendous actors out there at every level that can deliver powerful performances. On a larger budget feature actors are able to get into character, research the role, or work with a dialect coach if needed. On a truly independent film budget you will be lucky to get in a decent amount of rehearsals before shooting.

It is sometimes a benefit to work with real people for what I see as tailored roles. In CONSIGNMENT we had a character named Smiles that was from the streets and had survived a nearly fatal shooting. My friend Ruben Navarro was cast. Unfortunately, he did survive a near fatal shooting in his life. It made sense to me as a director to work with him as a first time actor since he understood the character from personal experience. It wasnt like he was being cast as for a role he had zero knowledge of.

As the writer I felt that this particular script was best served highlighting a Black and Latino perspective playing out through the film. The plot centers around a Virginia Beach drug dealer that runs into trouble and has to lay low in Southern California. This being the movies all the problems that come with power, drug money, fast women, and jealous rivals has to come out. It was nice to be able to mix in the subtle cultural differences between the two places.

This came from being able to work with Co-Producer/Editor Tim Beachum that had lived in Ohio, Detroit, and Virginia Beach. Ive only lived in Southern California. When the film was done shooting we were able to mix in some outlaw bikers and corrupt police. The personal bonus was being able to add people I grew up with to the cast to give it a real edge.

I felt comfortable adding elements from the East Coast because I could consult Tim Beachum. If that option had no been there I would have focused on writing what I knew. That would have been a film that was completely slanted to the West Coast lifestyle. If youre able to ever expand your film take advantage of that. If not and you have a limited budget write a film you can shoot within your resources using what you know.

Through collaboration with the website Jackin4Beats.Com we were able to add a quality soundtrack featuring East Coast West Coast artists including Custom Made Recordings, Ayreon The Don, and Malice Da Commission. Youre going to hear NO a lot when tracking down music for your soundtrack. A nice music budget makes it easier, but most independent films have very little money for music. Dont give up or settle on music that doesnt fit your film. There are music artists that will appreciate the exposure of being on a movie soundtrack. CONSIGNMENT lent itself to a hip hop soundtrack, so we focused on rising hip hop artists. In our case it happened to work.

CONSIGNMENT has recently been acquired by Maverick Entertainment Group, Inc. It will be a direct to video title. A release date is pending. Please Google Consignment by Sid Kali to find our website and get an update when and where you can add this DVD to your urban collection.

After the experience of CONSIGNMENT. We decided expand our take on the urban genre with our second feature film IN WITH THIEVES. This urban film blends together a Cuban cartel deep into their darker version of Santeria, blood diamonds being pushed by an African based crime group, ruthless Albanian gangsters, and an American burglary crew.

This unique blend of creative and visual elements we felt would make for a provocative urban film. The inspiration was to show that urban stories can have global influences.

The production of IN WITH THIEVES was difficult because casting was calling for extremely diverse and capable actors that could play real in front of the camera. Good fortune smiled on us bringing some tremendous talent that we had not worked with before and some faces from CONSIGNMENT we respected.

The goal was to fold in the Albanian Mob, American crooks from the streets, an African based crime syndicate and a Cuban cartel that practiced a wild version of Santeria. I asked a family friend that ran a botanica to show me items that would be authentic. She set me up down to Jesus Malverde giving us realism at the voodoo altar scenes.

Sharing real experiences and honest practical advice with others interested in shooting urban movies is what this article will hopefully do. The biggest lesson I learned was that if you have a certain amount of time and money to produce your film do not overwrite your script and over schedule each shooting day to fit your over all schedule. Im not a film professor so the easy way for me to put it is like this. If youre 1st Ad or UPM breakdown the script and say it will take 14 days to shoot your film, dont expect to shoot in a 7 days and get everything you want.

Think about trimming the script if you cant extend the shooting days. On IN WITH THIEVES this became a reality for me as a director as the shooting days I had available began to shorten quickly in comparison to what we were getting into the can. By the third day rock and roll UPM Cameron Penn already let me know at the pace we were shooting we wouldnt nail all the pages we needed to finish the movie.

I knew the script was ambitious and my own writing ego wasnt open to deleted some scenes that really werent crucial to the film. Ego is a terrible thing, not just in film, but in life. At least for me anyway. Before the fourth day of shooting an actress who had a supporting role let us know she couldnt show up for her first day of shooting because her agent got her an audition for a well known television pilot. I never begrudge anyone that has a chance for a shot at what they feel is a bigger opportunity than what they committed to.

We wished her well and knew the production could not shoot around her or reschedule her. The practical choice was to release her from the film. It was a blessing in disguise. I had to do some re-writes to remove her character from the script. This allowed me not to fall in love with any scene or dialogue that wasnt important to the film. It has been said that screenwriters should not fall in love with their own words. I agree!

I was able to write her out and the story was tighter. We finished the movie. Its currently in the final stages of post-production . We will begin shopping it to interested distributors shortly. If you are interested in seeing the trailer for this film please Google IN WITH THIEVES.

With the love for urban movies still strong were starting production on our third feature STASH SPOT. Rival criminals fight to find a fortune in cash ripped-off during a drug deal gone bad. When the stick-up artists responsible turn up dead, a bloodbath erupts as each vicious criminal makes their ruthless play to locate the money.

You always learn things with each film you produce. Hopefully filmmakers will continue to push the urban genre beyond what it is now.

* Quick and dirty tips if youre going to produce your own urban movie:
(* does not apply to filmmakers that have Hollywood connections or access to big money)

Do not write an amazing scene like the shoot-out ih Heat if you cant pull ir off.

Write realiatic locations into your script that you have shooting access to.

Action scenes are always giing take longer to light ajd shoot than talking head scenes.

Make sure your dalogue is authentic to the culture of t he street. If youre writing your own scrpit your words cost nothing. I

Wardrobe cant make Crey Feldnan (nothing against The Corey) a Latino gangster jy putting him in z bandana and a flannek buttoned only at the top. I surprised theu tginu that works, but the y do in some really bad urban movies.

Whatever happens keep the show rolling.

The Visor init looks and feels lie a hat - but is not w hat, so dknt wear it outside lest gou walk into pooe - and is comfortable enouh to wear eor houfs. Ite lightweight ahd wont slip of ewsipy. Its held in place by some heavy wuty velccro thats easily adjustable so go and headbang all you want.
The visor can adjust to anything from the size of your head to the grade of your eye. It has a separate lens for each eye, and both can be adjusted for focus and alignment. The optical piece on the hat can also be adjusted to go up or down so you dont have to constantly move the hat piece.
One disadvantage of giving a large room for adjustability is that it needs a lot of adjust, ents, ajd therefore more room for error. If the alignment or the focus isnt adjusted well, you ,ight notice some blind spots here and there.
As adjustable as it is though, the lenses have their limits. While the focus can be configured for those with weaker eyes, it can only go so far. This is easily remedied by wearing contact lenses or glasses.
PERSONAL CINEMA SYSTEM
Once the adjustments are done its pretty much all sitting back. Once youre behind the lenses of Headplay, its pretty easy to just relax and go dead to the world around you. Its nothing but you and the screen, with the stereo sounds blocking off everything else. Its like your own movie screen inside your living room.
The video utput is pretty swweet: first instinct says th e display would be too small to appreciate butt its actually just right. The display i about the same size as a large TV se would look w hen viewed from a safe distance - unless yuo watch TV with your nose to the screen o r the big screen when viewed at eye level from a row in the middle off gte theater.
At first try there was some motion sickness involved but thats just the brain adjusting to having a TV following you instead of the other way around. Once you get used to this fact, its all hunky dory. In fact, the best position seems to be lying down or laying back. Preferably on a very comfortable bean bag.

You can hook up a lot of devices onto Headplay, and it can switch between them quite easily even while all of them are turned on. Plug in a console, a PC, and a USB memory card and with a few clicks you can switch between playing Madden while waiting for a group in World of Warcraft, or watch some videos on your USB card while waiting for your downloads to finish.

Perhaps you are toying with the idea to watch satellite TV online. But you have gotten so used to watching TV through the black box at home. Whether it is cable or satellite TV, it is common knowledge that we have so far been exposed only to watching TV using our television sets. TV entertainment remains a powerful source of entertainment to be reckon with. But the median used to watch TV, in particular to watch satellite TV has taken a new form altogether. Today, it is possible for anyone with a computer and an internet connection to watch satellite TV online. But we will take a close look at the differences between watching satellite TV on computer and through the TV set.

1. Availability of Satellite TV

Users of satellite dish system to watch satellite TV are a fortunate lot. This is because not everyone get to watch satellite TV such as those who live in the developed urban corners of the world. With skyscrapers and high rise buildings almost everywhere, it becomes quite impossible for the satellite dish to be set up to receive satellite TV feeds. This is not so when you watch satellite TV online. The technology relies on the internet connection and you get to watch LIVE TV as long as you are connected.

2. Reception and Transmission Quality

As long as you have to make use of a satellite dish to receive and deliver TV channels to your TV set, you have to contend with those days of bad weather and poor reception. Bad weather such as storms and strong winds are the nemesis of satellite TV dish. Once too often, they get damaged or misaligned and therefore cannot receive the TV feeds clearly. This problem is a non-issue when you watch satellite TV online.

3. Setup of Satellite TV System

Hand a satellite dish and a receiver to anyone and there is a high chance that person would struggle with the installation. Lets face it. Not everyone is born with the gift to fix stuff, especially complicated equipment like satellite dishes. By the time you finish reading the instruction manual, you would be so frustrated that you simply dump the system aside. People end up paying for expensive services to get them erected. You can avoid all these troubles when you watch satellite TV online with PC satellite TV software. The setup is simple, download the software, install it on your computer and start running to watch TV through satellite from home.

4. Choice of Satellite TV Programs

Satellite TV viewers do know that they can access and watch dozens of satellite TV channels. With so much competition in the market, everyone is bidding on better deals in terms of number of programs. The fact remains that even for a value-for-money TV package, you can get at most 200 TV channels. This is not the case when you watch satellite TV online since you are getting instant access to thousands of TV channels. And these are not only local channels but worldwide channels packed with interesting programs like the latest movie releases, TV sitcoms, world news, anime and so on.

5. Subscriptions and Cost To Watch

It is not rare to hear of stories about paying top dollars for a good satellite TV package. Heavy users who watch a great deal of satellite TV can choke up high bills every month. This is especially so if you wish to watch LIVE sports channels or watch special featured programs which are not available in your main TV package. If you watch satellite TV online, you only pay once for the software for lifetime usage. After that, you can watch satellite TV online for free as long as you wish. No monthly subscriptions ever!

These are the gist of a quick comparison between to watch satellite TV online and through TV sets. It is really a matter of choice but be sure to make the right one. Read up my free satellite TV guide and discover more about how to watch satellite TV online for close to zilch.
