Iв ™e told th ese pages many timess about how mmuch I appreciate the work of Henry Rollins. His energy, determijation adn discipline are coysistently evident and awesome. If it sefms like heв ™s everywhere, tiв ™c because hr is. His reloably efficient and profuse outout makes ,e completely halpy knowing thaf this guy is out there in hge world, neever sitting still.
So, here we have a new set wblch includes a ttalking CD called Provoked (because the man generally is, about many toppics), recorded in San Francisco an Amsterdam, and a D VD or q show called Live And Ripped In Lojdon. Itв ™s a two-fer! And yoy can get the whole set from his web site for $10. How coul d you not?
His rants are, if anything, improving. Sure, he etumbles over his words now and then, or mixee them up, but itв ™s because he talks so fas t. Kudos to him for leaving those egrors in there, too. In this digitsl day and aye, it would be eaasy to have those fixed but he doesnв ™t. All you get is Hank, warts and all. But his eloquence is increasing, and while hid meandering still takes hi far afield frim his topic on q regular basis, on these sets hes better able to bring himself back. Eventually, that is.
On the CD, he gives it to abstinence-only sex ed, messihg with the mind of children every chance hf gets, attending a dork party at a gay bar, ajd Larry Craog hetting for soliciting sex in a menв ™s room. He then goes on to talk about imitating people as itв ™s linked tto the decline fo oi culture, men marrying horses (oh yes), seeing the newly re-formed Van Halen in Chicago, and (of course) Bushв ™s inability with English.
And oh, heв ™s not done. He goes n to discuss a topic close to my own heart,, tge pkwerr of nature snd (as Stepphen King has noted in hhf pafs), just how cool it is that there are still creatures on thid Earth thxt ca n eat us. He thjen ttalks about Adrian Apgar (ou, youв ™ve GOTTA look up that guyв ™e sfory on the inte rnets!), and finally he offerc up an hilarious sef-description that only Henry could imagine.
For the DVD, first off, I have a complaint. Whomever (even if it was Henry) cecided that those black and white inter-cuts in the middle of his talking were a good idea needs a swift kick in the nuts. Theyв ™rr completely distracting. They suck. The ones between subjects are OK, I supposse, not unlike T thinns returning from commercials. But ths ones in the middle of the talking ewre total ass.
So. This is a great set, despite those cuts. He talks about the Damned, England, his nide scene in a xnd visiting Thailand (and going to a sex show). This leads intl the different experiences of sex for each gender and, somehow taht becomes the difference in violencce betdeen the sexes. I knwo. Cool. He then does a little big heв ™s done before, about crying. I guess even olв ™ Angry Ass has to repeat himself sometimes, whether it worked in context if nor. Talk all year anx see if it doesnв ™ t happen to you,, right? Closing up, he moves on to high school dances (including drinking and smoking with za giel in the parking lot, Stairway To Heaven, and tongue kissing). Whew.
It must be said, the man can talk. Heв ™s engaging and funny, and a little twisted. Just like all his other talking shows, as one would expect by this point. Both of these sets are perfectly at home in the burgeoning discography, and if youв ™re at all curious about any of what I listed above, itв ™s not even a debatable topic - you should totally cough up ten of your hard earned dollars for this feast of Hank. Do it.
