Alex Levin. First rain drops in Jerusalem.
Alex Levin. First rain drops in Jerusalem.

I live in Israel 26 years.
I think that I see snow ones for 26 years.
I lived in a town Beer-Sheva.
This town is the desert of Negev.
But it is very nice that the kind of life we remember
as on the Ukraine.
That same bublicks from the Russian shops,
the tea , this cups ...samovary..
and the nice Russian woman on the picture ...from Marina.

Very sad !
This shows how smart you get as you grow older.
An old farmer in Kansas had owned a large farm for several years.
He had
a large pond in the back, fixed up nice, picnic tables, horseshoe
courts,
and some apple and peach trees. The pond was properly shaped and
fixed
up
for swimming when it was built.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he
hadn't
been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five gallon
bucket
to
bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices
shouting
and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of
young
women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his
presence
and
they all went to the deep end of the pond.
One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you
leave!"
The old man frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies
swim
naked or make you get out of the pond naked."
Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."

Fourteen years before the birth of our great compatriot Mikhail Lomonosov Pomeranian fishermen from the village Holmogory stumbled upon the wreckage of a Dutch merchant ship.Of the entire team of brave sailors remained alive only Jung, Abraham Shnobelman.Good Pomors out the victim was attached to seamanship. Now the former cabin boy named Vasili Nosov (shnobel translated from Yiddish - the nose). In addition to fishing and hunting for sea animals young Pomor showed a natural talent in the trading business and soon pulls rank wealthy.Basil was very popular among the local beauties (affected irrepressible love of Russians to everything foreign), for which no time was a bit local lads. For which he received the nickname of clematis, who later became his name.At the birth of the first-born Vasily Clematis had scandals with his young wife. The reason for this was a strange ritual, committed by the father of a son with reproductive organs, the meaning of which did not become clear to dark krestyanke.- It's so beautiful - urged uneducated woman ... And Basil gigienichno.Dalneyshuyu history of the Pomeranian boy knows all the enlightened world. I must say that Mikhail was never ashamed of his origin. On the contrary, close friends in letters addressed to him simply: Dear Moshe! But the reactionary tsarist government ordered the scientist not to advertise their nationality under threat of eviction for the Pale of Settlement.Mikhail was a Russian patriot and did not mind., The first time the issue of declassification of archival documents raised in 1924 by Leon Trotsky (Bronstein). But met fierce resistance on the part of Joseph Stalin (Dzhugashvili). Some modern historians believe that this was the main reason for the assassination of Trotsky. The Kremlin has always been able to securely store their sekrety.Vest about the origin of the great Russian scientist has stirred the entire world community.World Jewish Congress immediately made a proposal to the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation to rename the Moscow State University.Mikhailo Lomonosov International Russian-Jewish University.Moishe Shnobelmana. While the minister agreed after Lomonosov duplicate words in brackets real name of the scientist. What a nosy narodec, the last genius want to assign.Few of its Landau Joffe!- Expressed their outrage State Duma Deputy Albert Makashov and threatened to take to the streets all honest anti-Semites in Russia. While in Moscow Choral Synagogue began fundraising to build a Jewish temple in the village of Kholmogory Arkhangelsk region.Settlement account for donations can be found in the newspaper "Pravda North-West"
Maxim.Russia has long evolved as a multinational state.By the way, the Russian state got its name only in the time of Peter the Great, to him it was called Muscovy, which was historically true.Peter was the era of the era of borrowing.Braley would adopt everything - good and bad.Modern Russians are proud of their flag, and yet he was chosen randomly turned the Dutch flag and he was Russian, but so what? When Peter was artificially assigned national Russian, people previously lived in Muscovy and called Muscovites. And the land of the Slavs, formerly owned by the Kievan state, originally called themselves Russian became known as the Ukraine, and its inhabitants are Ukrainians.Must be able to be proud of the history of his people.Pure genetic line occurs only in mice and other genetic material for research.Russia "created" by people of different nationalities, without which there would be the Russian state and it is impossible to forget, if you want to consider yourself a decent man.Minin - who led the liberation of Moscow from Polish kingdom, which on Russian soil invited Russian boyars, was a full-blooded Tartar artist Levitan a Jew, Behring -nemets, the list is endless.Personally, I am proud that Lomonosov, who made a great contribution to the development of the Russian state was a Jew by birth, like many very worthy people.
It is said that a senior Ford, founder of the dynasty of the entire car, hated Jews. For work they did not take to yourself is not allowed.
Only odnazhdy to it yet penetrated the Jew and offered to buy herringbone tape. The winding it was somewhere in the motors. "Since - Ford tells him - you have got to me and I secretary dismissed for what it is you are allowed, then I'll buy you herringbone tape. But a little from the tip of your nose to the tip of your penis Jewish, and not more.
Goodbye, never to return. "
It takes a month, and again the Jew there. "I came - he said Ford, - to thank you for an exceptionally large order and assure you that your condition I religiously fulfilled: you put the car herringbone tape." Ford silent, speechless with rage. "Because - continues Jew - exactly ten thousand kilometers separate the tip of my nose, which - here it is, and the tip of my penis, which sixty years ago circumcision remained in the town near Vitebsk. Once again thank you very much.

The parable is really good and I am sending it to you because I think you are good people (the condition of delivery parables). Also, I'm curious what will happen in four days, though, being a staunch atheist, I am sure that there will be something that was in Odessa, like the joke about the passenger, who gave classified at the train station in Kharkiv: if after 10 minutes it stolen suitcase will not be refunded, something happened that was in Odessa. The thief, who returned the suitcase wondered what was in Odessa. And was told that in Odessa stolen suitcase he did not return.

Parable!
Yefim was driving along a deserted road when he saw on the side of the Mercedes stalled. In it, he saw an elderly woman who looked completely bewildered. He stopped in front of her car, got out of his old Opel and headed for the desperate woman. The lady was very frightened. All the while she was sitting in the car, no one stopped. And this young man, he will not cause harm? "I'll help you, Madame, 'he said. Change to my car, where you will be a little warmer, my name is Vadim Ivanov He discovered that the car burst tire. But due to age a woman could not handle it myself. Vadim squatted looked under the car to determine where to place the jack, rubbed his hands together to warm your fingers and went to work. By changing the wheel, Vadim smiled. The lady asked how it should work for and said that the price does not matter. Yefim replied, that it should not be anything to him. He just helped someone in a difficult moment. And only God knew how many times people have helped him in the past.
He said that if she really wants to pay, then the next time she sees someone in need, let will help this person and then remember him. A few kilometers woman saw a restaurant. She entered into it to warm and have a snack before the journey. The girl who served her with a friendly smile, despite the fact that it was the whole day on their feet. Lady saw that neither work nor her pregnancy or efforts are not deprived of this girl friendliness! When she finished her dinner, she paid for a bill of $ 100. The girl went for surrender. But the lady quickly left the restaurant.
When he returned, she found that the woman disappeared. Then she noticed a note on the table. Tears welled in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote to her: "You do not owe anything to me. I just passed by. Someone helped me today, as I do it for you. If you really want to pay me back , here's what to do: do not let this chain of love end with you. " Under the napkin on the table were four more $ 100 bills. How could a woman know how needed she and her husband? Home girl, clinging to her husband, kissed him and said softly: "Everything will be fine. I love you, Vadim." There is an old saying: "Well never lost," open hands always get something. After hearing this story, retell it, and I ask you to give her the way to the hearts of those who suffer! Allow it to emit light ...
I beseech thee, O Lord, grant that same person who reads these lines now, everything that he asked you! Give it to him fully, as best you can only give you one! And let it be happy all his days, and if such is not possible, then at least as much as anything. Grant him good health and love of neighbor, understanding and compassion. Make it so that his soul always shines only one love for all beings, to protect him from durnosloviya from resentment and envy, wars and deaths from physical and mental pain, if all this is inevitable, do not leave it, and then give comfort. Save for him all that is dear to him on the ground. If too late to ask for it - do not deprive his memory. I do not know - whether to believe you, reading this right now, the Merciful and my good Lord! Fulfill this desire of mine. Let Guardian Angel helps you when your wings are lowered.
Pass this prayer five good people, and see what will be after 4 days. Can not be interrupted

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Groisman urged the authorities of Ukraine recognized that they belong to the Jewish nation
Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Groisman at a meeting with religious leaders of Ukraine urged the leaders to officially recognize their belonging to the Jewish nation.
Valtsman
"We should not humiliate himself that call themselves Ukrainians! "- Emotionally explained Groisman.
"Everyone is so clear that we are descendants of the prophets of Israel, our roots.
In Ukraine, the highest public office, political parties, big business and financial institutions now belong to the Jews, because the Jews are smart and hard-working, and this confirms God's chosen people and the exceptional position of the Jews in Ukraine.
President Poroshenko, Prime Yatseniuk, Chairman of the National Security Council Turchinov - Jews, and they should be proud of.
Ukrainian guys also need to recognize a modulatory role in the development of the Jewish nation state ", - said the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine."
US President Barack Obama and Cuban leader Raul Castro shook hands before the summit began
US President Barack Obama has told Latin American leaders that the days when his country could freely interfere in regional affairs are past.
He was speaking just before the seventh Summit of the Americas in Panama City.
Mr Obama and Cuban leader Raul Castro shook hands as the opening ceremony began, their first encounter since a December detente.
But their historic formal talks due on Saturday could be overshadowed by tensions between Venezuela and the US.
Mr Obama told a forum of civil society leaders in Panama City that "the days in which our agenda in this hemisphere presumed that the United States could meddle with impunity, those days are past".
At past Summits of the Americas, which bring together the leaders of North, Central and South America, the US has come in for criticism for its embargo against Cuba and its objection to having Cuba participate in the gatherings.
This seventh summit is the first which Cuba will attend and much of the attention will be focussed on the body language between the former foes.

Barack Obama and Raul Castro are due to meet again later on Saturday. It will be the first formal encounter between the leaders of the US and Communist-run Cuba in more than five decades.
Before the summit began, the US president stressed that he hoped the thaw in relations would improve the lives of the Cuban people.
"Not because it's imposed by us, the United States, but through the talent and ingenuity and aspiration and the conversation among Cubans, among all walks of life. So they can decide what is the best course of prosperity."
Later, Mr Obama and Mr Castro joined representatives from 35 nations for the summit's inauguration ceremony.
A marching band and children in national dress of the participating countries waved flags as the summit opened to applause.

While Mr Obama name-checked Cuba when he was talking about the US's days of meddling being in the past, the message was equally - if not more so - aimed at Venezuela.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has not only accused the US of meddling but of fomenting a coup against his government.
His open distrust of Mr Obama was only heightened when the US president signed an executive order last month declaring Venezuela a threat to the national security of the US.
US officials have since said the wording was "completely pro-forma" but the damage had been done.
It had not only incensed Mr Maduro but also Latin American leaders sensitive to what they see as US imperialist rhetoric.
The tone of the summit could well hang on whether Mr Obama's latest assurances sway Mr Maduro and his left-wing allies, who form a powerful bloc at the summit.
Mr Obama's speech before the summit came a day after the State Department recommended that Cuba be removed from the US lists of countries which sponsor terrorism.
Its presence on the list has been one of the main hurdles on the way to closer ties between the two countries.
The president said on Thursday that all he was waiting for now was a recommendation from his advisers, leaving many expecting an announcement at the summit.
The smooth progress made between Cuba and the US stands in contrast to the bumpy ride that have been relations between Venezuela and the US over the past months.
There have been protests against a US order saying Venezuela posed a threat to US security
The two countries have not exchanged ambassadors for more than six years, but tensions rose last month when the US imposed sanctions on a group of Venezuelan officials it accuses of human rights abuses.
As part of the sanctions, Mr Obama issued an executive order declaring Venezuela a threat to the national security of the United States.
President Maduro has collected more than 10 million signatures demanding its repeal.
Their meeting at the summit, while less historic than the one between Mr Castro and Mr Obama, is drawing as much attention for its unpredictability.
Mr Maduro sent out mixed messages on Friday.
President Maduro has said that Venezuela has come to the summit in a "constructive spirit"
In a clear swipe at the US, he visited a monument to the victims of the 1989 US invasion of Panama just hours after he landed.
But he also said that it was "time not for imperialism, but for peace".
"We're in a battle of ideas, in a fight so that Venezuela is respected, we're coming here in a constructive spirit, to make history through respect," he said.

A wise man, speaking before an audience, told them the anecdote. The whole audience shuddered with laughter.
A few minutes later he again told the people the same anecdote. Only a few people smiled.
Sage third time said the same joke, but no one laughed.
The wise old man smiled and said: "Laugh constantly with the same jokes you can not ... So why allow yourself to cry on the same about all the time?"

Scientists: that men are dying too early to blame their wives

All male health problems really blame the wife, said the Swiss
It is well known that men are more likely to get sick less and live, although they are called strong half of mankind. The answer to this phenomenon scientists have searched everywhere and hormones, and the vagaries of evolution, and drunkenness, and even social responsibility entrusted to men. But a recent study by Swiss scientists gave a surprisingly simple and at the same time a radical answer: men who many get sick and die prematurely, just an unfortunate married! And for all the problems with male health really blame the wife.
To be precise, the blame for men's disease is only uneducated and not too savvy women, say Swedish doctors. According to their calculations, a man whose second halves have IQ above average, live longer and better than others. And from the education and intelligence of the men almost nothing depends - though he brilliant nuclear physicist, health issues almost always "rules" woman.
In terms of specific male longevity secrets, nothing sensational about them. Simply smart wives are more likely to follow the way of life of a spouse, a better grasp of healthy eating and more skillfully taught him husbands. So, the basic principles that add modern men 5-10 years of life, are as follows:
- Eat less fatty meat,
- Do not skip breakfast,
- Do not neglect vegetables,
- Not to indulge in fast food,
- Do not overdo it with coffee,
- Consume less salt,
- To monitor cholesterol,
- Move more and be outdoors,
- Enough sleep.
Women in the study of Swedish doctors also noted that they often have to remind their husbands about the seemingly obvious health risks. For example, that it is not necessary to go outside with a wet head uncovered, especially if the court of winter. Or with a sore lower back for the rearrangement of furniture is better not to take.
In addition, wives, scientists ascribed to the category of "smart", able to persuade her husband to give up bad habits. For example, do not drink beer every dinner or not to smoke at home when the child (and then do not smoke at all).
In general, doctors have come to the conclusion that for a long time made for myself every second woman: most men are absolutely helpless when it comes to their health. They are minimally interested in questions of medicine, it is inattentive to their own security, often simply lazy to even call the clinic, and only for the calculation of fat and salt not undertake ever. Therefore, the responsibility for their life expectancy is on the weak half of humanity.
However, many women are, unfortunately, not heals her husband, but instead take over his life. The most contagious bad habits - smoking and nutrition is something like, because when new-found wife begins to prepare for a loved every "tasty", she sits down on it myself. So indulge your eating habits Blessed - not always the best strategy in family life. Even if you can not pave the way to the heart of man is through his stomach, and then another, at least, will remain healthy.
Last month the Magazine wrote about Reg Spiers, who posted himself from London to Australia in a box in 1964. Spiers inspired another stowaway, Welshman Brian Robson, whose journey in the opposite direction was less successful - he was lucky to survive.
"Australia was a complete shock to my system," says Brian Robson. "I found it very difficult, and thought from the moment I got there I wanted to get out as quickly as possible."
But he couldn't just buy a ticket home - he had arrived in Australia in late 1964 on an assisted immigration programme which committed him to spending two years in the country. His travel costs had been paid for by the Australian government, and he wouldn't be able to get a passport to legally leave the country until he had done his time.
He took a "boring and lonely" job as a railway ticket clerk, which left him feeling isolated. And despite having some relatives in Australia, he was homesick and desperate to return home.
So when a relative who was sailing to the UK suggested Robson stow away on his ship, he decided to try his luck.
He used a visitor's pass to get on board, and stayed on the boat until it sailed. But the plan unravelled just hours into the voyage when Robson became violently seasick, and he was taken to the vessel's medical bay by one of the crew. His subterfuge was soon discovered, and he was put off the ship in New Zealand.
With little choice but to accept financial help from another relative in Australia, Robson flew back to Sydney, where he read about the exploits of Reg Spiers. Inspired by Spiers's trip from London to Perth in a wooden crate, Robson decided he would send himself in the opposite direction using the same method.
"From the moment I read it in the newspaper I convinced myself I had no choice," says Robson. "That's what I had to do."
He made his way to Melbourne where he persuaded two friends to help him realise his plan. "At first they said I was completely mad. I spent maybe a week persuading them and they agreed to do it."
The next step was to approach the airline, Qantas. Robson needed to check what size of crate he could air-freight back to the UK, and if, like Spiers, he could send himself cash-on-delivery. Then he went to a builders' merchant and bought the crate he would travel in - a wooden box measuring 30 x 26 x 38 inches (76 x 66 x 96cm).
"I had the crate delivered to the back of the building where I was living, and left it there for a couple of days while we planned the next stage."
Robson wanted to convince Qantas the crate was carrying a computer being shipped back to the UK for maintenance and servicing.
"One of my mates produced an invoice at work on company documents. I took it to Qantas personally, and checked I could send the crate directly by the quickest route, which was about 36 hours," he says.
"I told them we had to make arrangements for it to be collected in London, so wanted the precise flight number."
Confident that his plan would work, Robson decided on a departure date and set about preparing for the journey. The crate was strengthened and fitted with a rope harness to hold him in place. One side of the box was nailed shut by Robson himself from the inside.
"I had a pair of pliers which I could use to pull the nails out on arrival in London."
With less generous proportions than the box Reg Spiers had built for himself, Robson had far less room for manoeuvre, and it was all the more cramped because he put a large suitcase into the crate as well.
"I could fit in there OK as long as I sat down with my knees pressed up in my chest. My back was to the suitcase. It was quite large, which obviously reduced my movements inside even more.
"I couldn't stretch my legs and I couldn't turn around," he says. "I was more or less stuck in that position, which at first was quite comfy but later proved not so sensible."
Brian Robson (left) arrived back in London in May 1965
Robson packed two pillows into the crate, as well as a torch and two bottles - one for water and one for urine. The first leg of his journey, from Melbourne to Sydney, went smoothly. But from there his plan started to go badly wrong.
"They left me on the tarmac, but I was dumped upside down. I was strapped in standing on my head. I tried to turn around but there wasn't enough space, it was impossible.
"It becomes painful very quickly, throbbing in your neck and the top of your head. Your neck is taking all the weight so it becomes excruciatingly painful. The blood is rushing to your head. You get blackouts. I was in serious pain."
Robson spent 22 punishing hours upside down in his crate, but was never tempted to reveal himself. "It was London or die - that's how serious I felt about it."
Eventually, much to his relief, the crate was turned upright again and loaded on to another aircraft. Airborne once more, Robson thought nothing would now stop him from getting back home.
But what he didn't know was that the Qantas flight he thought he would travel on was full, so the airline instead loaded him onto a Pan American aircraft which would take a much slower route back to the UK. Robson was travelling in a hold that wasn't heated, and as the journey continued his situation became increasingly serious.
"I had difficulty breathing," he says, "and I started to get pain in my elbows and knees. Slowly, just about every joint in my body started aching. They were swelling - my ankles were swelling really badly."
Robson's "thinking went haywire". He slipped in and out of consciousness, tormented by a nightmare in which he was thrown out of the aircraft mid-flight. "It sounds crazy when you think about it now. But I spent some really terrifying hours."
His aircraft finally touched down and he was taken, still in his crate, out of the hold to a freight shed. Thinking he must be back in the UK, he tried to check the time and date on his watch. But still in extreme pain, and barely able to move, he first needed his torch, clipped to the inside of the crate only 20cm in front of him.
"I got hold of that torch and turned it on, but then I dropped it. There was no way I could pick it up," says Robson, "I just couldn't do any more. The torch was at the bottom of the crate, turned on."
A freight handler, Gary Hatch, spotted the light shining out through a gap between the crate's wooden boards. He decided to investigate and managed to work open a hole in the box.
Robson's rescuer, Gary Hatch poses inside the crate with his suitcase
When he peered inside, he was shocked to see what he thought was a dead body inside. Robson couldn't speak or move and was unable to signal that he was alive. Hatch promptly disappeared, returning a short while later with a large cohort of customs officers, doctors and police.
After a heated debate about the crate's legal status, they decided to break it open. Robson's ordeal was over. After eight months he had escaped Australia - but he wasn't in London. The startled officials spoke with American accents. Robson was in Los Angeles.
"It took three or four of them to take me out of the crate, and as they laid me on my back my legs stayed in the same position as when I was sitting in the crate. They forced my legs down, and my body came up.
"Of course, between them they held me down and straightened my legs. And then they took me to hospital."
Media interest in Robson's story was huge, and he even did some television interviews while he was recovering in hospital, telling reporters it felt "terrible" to be shipped by crate. As he recovered his voice he was able to explain to the FBI that he had not been kidnapped, and was not a spy, but simply a homesick Welshman trying to get back to the UK.
The question remained what to do with Robson. Although he was in the US illegally, the American authorities decided not to press charges. But responsibility for stowaways lies with the company that carries them - in this case the unwitting Pan American. The airline could have sent Robson back to Australia, but, perhaps keen to ride the wave of positive publicity around his escapade, it decided instead to send him to London - first class.
All told, Robson had spent four days folded inside his crate. He had been lucky to survive, and he fears he could easily have frozen to death had he been loaded on to the final leg from Los Angeles to London, which would have flown over the northern ice cap.
"I am 70 years old now," he says. "On reflection, kids don't think straight. I think most teenagers, youth of those days and certainly of these, make their mind up to do something and don't think of the consequences.
"It was a pretty dangerous thing, but did I ever think of giving up? Absolutely not, that was the last thing that went through my mind."
For a while Robson enjoyed his new-found celebrity, before leaving his home city of Cardiff to set up a string of retail businesses. He's written a film script of his adventure, which he hopes might yet be picked up by a production company, and he's even been back to Australia for a holiday.
"At that time there were no computers and you didn't need a visa for Australia. So I don't think anybody knew I was there."
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is to announce she is running for president on Sunday, various US media report.
Mrs Clinton is expected to make the announcement on social media.
The 67-year-old will then travel to Iowa and New Hampshire, two early primary contests in the 2016 race.
The former first lady previously ran for president in 2008 and is already considered a strong contender for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Mrs Clinton is expected to release a video outlining her campaign themes but will put off a large, formal speech.
Mrs Clinton has already made a trip to Iowa, where she came in third in the state's 2008 nominating contest
Analysis - Anthony Zurcher, North America reporter
Hillary Clinton is ready to run. Are voters ready for her?
In 2008 she came close - oh, so close - to winning the Democratic nomination, falling to the once-in-a-generation candidacy of Barack Obama.
Despite her near success, however, her effort exposed some worrisome flaws - bickering among her advisors, a veil of guarded aloofness that was only occasionally lowered and the perception that she lacked an explanation for why she sought the top office.
With a Democratic field devoid of compelling alternatives, Mrs Clinton likely has a much clearer path to the Democratic nomination this time.
This gives her the luxury of time to find her footing on the campaign trail after a long hiatus.
Come next summer, however, a battle-hardened Republican candidate will be waiting. She came up short last time. Soon we'll learn what, if anything, she's learned from past mistakes.
She recently faced criticism over using a private email address to conduct official business as secretary of state and having personal staff decide what emails should be given over to public records.
Mrs Clinton was a politically active first lady during her husband's two terms as US president and then served in the US Senate for several years.
She lost out to President Barack Obama during the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries.
Mr Obama later named her as secretary of state, a position she held until 2013.
Mrs Clinton signed a lease for campaign headquarters in Brooklyn, New York earlier this week
Two major Republicans, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, have formally announced their campaigns, but many more are expected to run, including former Florida Governor Jeb Bush - whose father and brother were both president.
Another Clinton-Bush election - the first was won by Mrs Clinton's husband Bill in 1992 - would revive the debate in the US about powerful political dynasties.
The Democratic field looks more narrow than the Republican one, but Mrs Clinton could face former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley and possibly Vice-President Joe Biden.
Many in the left-wing of the party are urging Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren to run.
But she has repeatedly said in media interviews that she is not running for president.
2016 runners and riders
Clockwise from top left: Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Elizabeth Warren, Rand Paul, Hillary Clinton
Only Cruz and Paul have formally declared but here are some names to watch:
early Republican frontrunner is Jeb Bush
but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie could battle Bush for the party's centre ground
darling of the Tea Party is Texas Senator Ted Cruz
firebrand liberal Elizabeth Warren is championed by many in the Democratic Party
libertarian Rand Paul has his supporters - and enemies - among Republicans
Hillary Clinton will have learnt much from her failed campaign of 2008
Master told how once the war, during a fierce air attack people he hid in the basement of the monastery. The whole day people sat in the basement and around constantly exploding bomb. Towards evening the two broke and said:
- It's enough. Bombs, not bombs - we go home.
They left the shelter, but three minutes later came back.
- I see you've changed your mind - Master smiled.
- Yes, - they replied irritably, - there it started to rain.
The Kremlin has announced that Russia will hugely boost its naval operations in 2015.
But that’s an empty promise—or threat, if you will. In fact, the Russian fleet is on the edge of a precipitous decline in ship numbers and combat power, owing to huge industrial shortfalls that have been decades in the making.
“As for missions of Russian naval ships, there will be 50 percent more of them than in 2013,” Gen. Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian general staff, told a TV audience in December.
But Gerasimov’s vow belies a bleak future for the Russian navy. Even if the fleet is busier in 2015 than it was in 2013, in coming years it will have fewer and fewer ships to be busy with—and those that remain will be progressively smaller and weaker than rival vessels.
On paper, that is.
But that count includes many ships that
are inactive
and in poor material condition plus scores
of small patrol vessels with very limited
combat capability.
Of the 270 ships, just 125 or so are in a working state. And of those 125, only around 45 are oceangoing surface warships or submarines that are in good shape and deployable.
All the above figures come from Dr. Dmitry Gorenburg of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University.
By comparison, the U.S. Navy possesses some 290 warships. Pretty much all of them are well-maintained, deployable, oceangoing vessels.
All the same, a force of almost 50 large warships is no insignificant thing, and outguns the fleets of all but the most powerful countries. The problem, according to Gorenburg, is that today’s Russian navy is old … and won’t last much longer.
At top—the Russian cruiser Peter the Great. RIA Novosti photo. Above—the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov. Photo via Wikipedia
“The Russian navy is still primarily a Soviet legacy force,” Gorenburg writes. “There are relatively few new warships in service at present and the ones that have been commissioned in recent years are all relatively small. In terms of large surface units, the navy only operates what it was able to save during the years when it received virtually no funding.”
Many, if not most, of the Soviet-vintage ships will decommission in the next few years as they became too old to sail safely and economically.
Under Pres. Vladimir Putin’s regime, the Kremlin has laid plans to rebuild the fleet. But that’s easier said than done when the vessels most badly in need of replacement are also the most difficult to build—heavy cruisers, powerful destroyers and Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia’s sole aircraft carrier, which is barely seaworthy after nearly three decades in service.
“Russia’s shipbuilding industry is not in good shape,” Gorenburg explains. He estimates that the industry could build somewhere between half and 70 percent of the vessels Moscow wants by 2020. “The earliest that Russia could build a new aircraft carrier is 2027, while new destroyers are still on drawing board, with the first unlikely to be commissioned for 10 years.”
And it doesn’t help that Russia has invaded and alienated Ukraine, which built Admiral Kuznetsov and until recently supplied Russian shipyards with many of the heavy components they need to complete new warships.
Moscow tried to inject new hardware and expertise into its rusting shipbuilding industry by acquiring two new Mistral-class amphibious assault ships from France—and also licensing the design for possible continued construction of the class in Russian yards.
But Paris suspended the deal last year after Russian troops annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region and also infiltrated eastern Ukraine to aid pro-Russian separatists.
Russia’s shipyards are still capable of building small corvettes and other uncomplicated coastal patrol vessels. And that’s shaping the fleet’s operations.
“Whereas the Soviet navy focused on building ships designed to take on carrier groups,” Gorenburg concludes, “the new Russian navy will be primarily focused on defending against smaller adversaries closer to home.”
So the Russian fleet’s 50-percent-more-hectic 2015 could be one of its lastbusy years for a good long time—at least in any meaningful sense of the word “busy.” More and more, Moscow’s navy will have to stay home.
Meanwhile, the U.S. and Chinese navies continue to grow and modernize. The American fleet is working hard to expand to around 306 large ships by the 2020s. And Washington is already deploying more of its vessels overseas.
We may not like thinking about it, but we are all on a limited journey on this earth. Regardless of what you believe happens after death, you will leave a body behind.
While burial beneath the ground and cremation are the most popular ways to go, some people are getting more creative. One company will have your remains turned into a diamond. For between $5,000 and $22,000 they will take the carbon from your ashes and compress it under high heat and pressure in a machine. After three weeks a diamond will be created. Family members will sometimes have these diamonds turned into rings and wear them. One Swiss company produces 800 to 900 of these human diamonds a year.
Others seek to travel to space after death. This is a fitting place to return to since the elements of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen within all of us were created inside stars billions of years ago. The famous astronomer Carl Sagan once said, “We are a way for the universe to know itself. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. We long to return. And we can, because the cosmos is also within us. We’re made of star stuff.”
The company Celestis will return your body to deep space for $12,500. This is the same company that sent Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek and Tim Leary the famous psychedelic explorer into space after they died. If Celestis is too pricey for you, the new startup Elysium Space will send you on a shorter trip to space. For just $1990, your remains will circle the earth for a few months before returning to earth. Your loved ones will be able to monitor the view from your space ship as it travels around the planet from a smartphone app.
If you would prefer to honor your place in the continuous cycle of life and death here on earth, how about becoming a tree? A Spanish company sells biodegradable urns that combine your ashes with the seed of a tree. As the urn breaks down, the roots from the seed grow into you, and from your remains new life rises.
What about you? How do you want to end your journey on planet earth?

How Much Do You Love Me?
One day a young man came to the Master and said:
- I came to you because I feel so miserable and worthless, that I do not want to live. Everything told that I'm a loser, bungler and an idiot. I beg you, Master, help me!
Master, glancing at him, hastily replied:
- I'm sorry, but I'm very busy and I can not help you. I've got to settle one very important thing - and after some thought, he added: - But if you agree to help me in my business, I will be happy to help you in your.
- With ... with pleasure, Master, - he muttered, bitterly noting that it has once again pushed into the background.
- Well, - said the Master, and took from his left little finger a little ring with a beautiful stone.
- Take a horse and gallop into the marketplace! I've got to sell this ring to repay a debt. Try to take him a little more, and in any case, do not settle for less than the price of gold coins! Ride the same and come back as soon as possible! The young man took the ring and rode away. Arriving at the market square, he began to offer the ring to traders, and those with interest at first looked at his goods.
But once they hear about the gold coin, as they immediately lost all interest in the ring. Some openly laughed in his face, while others simply turned away, and only one elderly merchant kindly explained to him that a gold coin - it's too high a price for a ring and what it can give except that the copper coin, well, at the very least a silver.
Hearing the words of the old man, the young man was very upset, because he remembered mandate Masters in any case not lower the price below the gold coin. Going round the whole market and offering ring good hundred people, the young man again saddled his horse and came back. Greatly dejected failure, he went to the Master.
- Master, I could not fulfill your order - sadly he said. - In the best case I could get for the ring a couple of silver coins, but you're not told to accept less than the gold! And so this ring is not necessary.
- You just said very important words, my son! - Master said. - Before attempting to sell the ring, it would be nice to establish its true value! Well, who can do it better than a jeweler? Ride-ka to a jeweler so ask him how much he will offer us the ring. Only that he would not you responded, sell ring, and return to me. The boy again mounted his horse and went to a jeweler.
Jeweller long considered the ring through a magnifying glass, and then weighed it on a small scale, and finally turned to the young man:
- Sent by the master, that now I can not give him more than fifty eight gold coins. But if he will give me time, I'll buy a ring in his seventies, given the urgency of the transaction.
- Seventy coins ?! - The young man laughed happily, thanked the jeweler and at full speed rushed back.
- Sit down here - said the Master, after listening to the lively story of a young man. Know, my son, that you have and this is the ring. Precious and unique! And you can only estimate the true expert. So why do you go through the market, expecting that it will make the first comer?

At the Seder, every person should see himself as if he himself came out of Egypt. Beginning with our Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we recount the Jewish people’s descent into Egypt and recall their suffering and persecution.
We are with them as God sends the Ten Plagues to punish Pharaoh and his nation, and follow along as they leave Egypt and crossthe Sea of Reeds.
We witness the miraculous hand of God as the waters part to allow the Israelites to pass, then return to inundate the Egyptian legions.
Falklands Islands Defence Force soldiers are a constant presence on the islands
Documents released by the American whistle-blower Edward Snowden claim that Britain spied for several years on the Argentine government.
According to reports in the Argentine media, Britain was concerned that Argentina could launch another attempt to reclaim the Falkland Islands.
The two nations fought a war over the islands in 1982.
Last month the British government announced it was upgrading its military presence on the islands.
Mr Snowden says British agents were actively spying on Argentina between 2006 and 2011.
The former CIA worker, who now lives in Russia, has previously leaked sensitive information about US surveillance programmes.
The BBC's South America correspondent Wyre Davies says there has not been any formal response yet from either the British or Argentine government to the allegations, which have been published by a number of Argentine news agencies.
The claims are that Britain began a large scale operation which may have involved implanting computer viruses, circulating false propaganda and collecting intelligence with the aim of diminishing or discrediting the Argentine government, our correspondent added.
The news comes around the 33rd anniversary of the start of the war, which saw more than 900 servicemen killed.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said last month that Britain will spend £280m over the next 10 years on renewing and beefing up its defences of the Falkland Islands, to taking into account "any future and possible threats" to the islands.
The lives of 255 British servicemen and about 655 Argentines were lost during the fighting
Britain's 'paradox'
Meanwhile, Argentine foreign ministry officials say they will prosecute oil companies operating near the Falkland Islands, which are known as Las Malvinas in South America.
The officials said companies active there were operating illegally in Argentine territory.
Earlier this week, three British oil exploration companies announced new oil and gas finds north of the islands.
And Argentine President Cristina Fernandez said Britain should spend more helping its own poor than on defending the Falkland Islands.
Delivering a speech to honour her country's war dead in the conflict, she said: "What a paradox when there are more than one million Britons eating at the food banks they have had to open in one of the most powerful countries in the world.
"Don't worry. Don't spend another pound sterling on defending the Malvinas.
"Spend your money feeding the English, on providing jobs for your young people and a better quality of life for the British, because we are not a threat to anyone."
She has also ordered the declassification of all her country's secret documents on the war.
Guide to the islands:
The Falkland Islands are an isolated and sparsely populated British overseas territory in the south-west Atlantic Ocean
They remain the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina, who waged a brief but bitter war over the territory in 1982
Argentine forces landed on the Falklands on 2 April 1982 to stake a territorial claim, but by 14 June they had been ejected by a British military task force
The fighting cost the lives of 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen
Argentina says it has a right to the islands, which it calls the Malvinas, because it inherited them from the Spanish crown in the early 1800s
It has also based its claim on the islands' proximity to the South American mainland
Britain rests its case on its long-term administration of the Falklands and on the principle of self-determination for the islanders, who are almost all of British descent.
The story goes that one day Sultan Mahmud called all his approximate. When everyone arrived, he showed them a large and beautiful pearls and demanded that each of the participants tried to call her price.
The first speaker Wazir, appreciated gem in the forty bags of gold. The Sultan told him that he broke it. Wazir fell to his knees and said that he could not destroy this treasure of the sultan, and thus cause damage to his treasury. Sultan liked the answers Wazir, and he gave him a luxurious bathrobe.
Next was the manager of the palace. He had seen that Wazir was awarded a bathrobe, and also wanted to get away from the Sultan expensive gift. So he appreciated gem in half the kingdom, and the king's break it replied that he could not destroy such beauty. And the answer seems to be like the Sultan. Anyway, the manager also received an award.
So one by one passed and military leaders, and the Emir, and other courtiers. Everyone got their reward, and the pearl remained intact. Their responses were similar to each other until the queue went to pet the Sultan Ayaz. And he was asked about the price of pearls.
- Price her more than I can imagine.
- Then break it, - said the sultan.
Ayaz hand did not tremble, and he was one blow broke the pearl into small pieces.
All cried out that this could be done only wrong, but Ayaz said quietly:
- About the pillars of power! You think that you are wise, but you did not understand what his command of Sultan more sincere subjects than any jewel. And when you refused to break up the gem, you did not think about her values, and about the gifts of the Sultan.
When Ayaz finished his speech, the court looked down, and then sounded a word of repentance. But the sultan no one is listening, and drove out of the palace negligent. Ayaz said that these nobles spoiled generosity of the Sultan, and the sultan agreed.

In 1933, a beautiful, young Austrian woman took off her clothes for a movie director. She ran through the woods ... naked. She swam in a lake ... naked. Pushing well beyond the social norms of the period, (you can see part of the movie HERE)
The most popular movie in 1933 was King Kong but everyone in Hollywood was talking about that scandalous movie with the gorgeous, young Austrian woman.
Louis B. Mayer, of the giant studio MGM, said she was the most beautiful woman in the world. The film was banned practically everywhere ... which of course made it even more popular and valuable. Mussolini reportedly refused to sell his copy at any price.
The star of the film, called Ecstasy, was Hedwig Kiesler. She said the secret of her beauty was "to stand there and look stupid." In reality, Kiesler was anything but stupid. She was a genius. She'd grown up as the only child of a prominent Jewish banker. She was a math prodigy. She excelled at science.
As she grew older, she became ruthless, using all the power her body and mind gave her.
Between the sexual roles she played, her tremendous beauty and the power of her intellect, Kiesler would confound the men in her life ... including her six husbands.
Her beauty made her rich for a time. She is said to have made, and spent, $30 million in her life, an enormous sum back in the 1930’s. But her greatest accomplishment resulted from her intellect and her invention continues to shape the world we live in today.
You see, this young Austrian starlet would take one of the most valuable technologies ever developed right from under Hitler's nose. After fleeing to America, she not only became a major Hollywood star ... her name sits on one of the most important patents ever granted by the U.S. Patent Office.
Today, when you use your mobile phone or, over the next few years, as you experience super-fast wireless Internet access (via something called "long-term evolution" or LTE" technology), you'll be using an extension of the technology a 20- year-old actress first conceived while sitting at dinner with Hitler.
At the time she made Ecstasy, Kiesler was married to one of the richest men in Austria, Friedrich Mandl. He was Austria 's leading arms maker and his firm would become a key supplier to the Nazis.
Mandl used his beautiful young wife as a showpiece at important business dinners with representatives of the Austrian, Italian, and German fascist forces. One of Mandl's favorite topics at these gatherings -- which included meals with Hitler and Mussolini -- was the technology surrounding radio-controlled missiles and torpedoes.
Wireless weapons offered far greater ranges than the wire-controlled alternatives that prevailed at the time. Kiesler sat through these dinners "looking stupid," while absorbing everything she heard. As a Jew, she hated the Nazis. She abhorred her husband's business ambitions. Mandl responded to his wilful wife by imprisoning her in his castle, Schloss Schwarzenau In 1937, she managed to escape by drugging her maid, snuck out of the castle wearing the maid's clothes and sold her jewellery to finance a trip to London.
She got out just in time. In 1938, Germany annexed Austria and the Nazis seized Mandl's factory. He was half Jewish himself and was forced to fell to Brazil where later, he became an advisor to Argentina's iconic populist president, Juan Peron.
In London, Kiesler arranged a meeting with Louis B. Mayer of MGM fame. She signed a long-term contract with him, becoming one of MGM's biggest stars and appeared in more than 20 films. She was a co-star to Clark Gable, Judy Garland, and even Bob Hope. Each of her first seven MGM movies was a blockbuster.
But Kiesler cared far more about fighting the Nazis than about making movies. At the height of her fame, in 1942, she developed a new kind of communications system, optimized for sending coded messages that couldn't be "jammed." She was building a system that would allow torpedoes and guided bombs to always reach their targets. She was building a system to kill Nazis.
By the 1940s, both the Nazis and the Allied forces were using the kind of single-frequency radio-controlled technology Kiesler's ex-husband had been peddling. The drawback of this technology was that the enemy could find the appropriate frequency and "jam" or intercept the signal, thereby interfering with the missile's intended path.
Kiesler's key innovation was to "change the channel." It was a way of encoding a message across a broad area of the wireless spectrum. If one part of the spectrum was jammed, the message would still get through on one of the other frequencies being used. The problem was, she could not figure out how to synchronize the frequency changes on both the receiver and the transmitter. To solve the problem, she turned to perhaps the world's first techno-musician, George Anthiel.
Anthiel was an acquaintance of Kiesler who achieved some notoriety for creating intricate musical compositions. He synchronized his melodies across twelve player pianos, producing stereophonic sounds no one had ever heardbefore. When Kiesler incorporated Anthiel's technology for synchronizing his player pianos, she was able to synchronize the frequency changes between a weapon's receiver and its transmitter.
Like all good inventions, this one was relatively simple, one of those “why didn’t I think of that?” inventions – it worked like this. You have a tuneable transmitter at one end and a tuneable receiver at another. You then make two identical frequency changing mechanisms and hook one up to the transmitter and the other to the receiver. When you want to transmit a signal that can’t be jammed or copied you just start both mechanisms at the same time then as the transmitter and receiver change frequency they do so together on the same frequency at the same time.
Luckily, no one had invented a scanner back then.
On August 11, 1942, U.S. Patent No. 2,292,387 was granted to Antheil and "Hedy Kiesler Markey," which was Kiesler's married name at the time.
Most of you won't recognize the name Kiesler. And no one would remember the name Hedy Markey. But it's a fair bet than anyone reading this newsletter of a certain age will remember one of the great beauties of Hollywood 's golden age -- Hedy Lamarr. That's the name Louis B. Mayer gave to his prize actress. That's the name his movie company made famous.
Meanwhile, almost no one knows Hedwig Kiesler -- aka Hedy Lamarr -- was one of the great pioneers of wireless communications. Her technology was developed by the U.S. Navy, which has used it ever since.
You're probably using Lamarr's technology, too. Her patent sits at the foundation of "spread spectrum technology," which you use every day when you log on to a wi- fi network or make calls with your Bluetooth-enabled phone. It lies at the heart of the massive investments being made right now in so-called fourth-generation "LTE" wireless technology. This next generation of cell phones and cell towers will provide tremendous increases to wireless network speed and quality, by spreading wireless signals across the entire available spectrum. This kind of encoding is only possible using the kind of frequency switching that Hedwig Kiesler invented.
There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning, Lord,"
and those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good Lord, it's morning!"
And had never been married. She was admired for her sweetness and kindness to all.
One afternoon the pastor
came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint
sitting room.
She invited him to have a
seat while she prepared tea... As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, the young minister noticed a cut glass bowl sitting on top of it. The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated of all things, a condom!
When she returned With tea and scones, they began to chat. The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity About the bowl of water and its
strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist.
'Miss Beatrice', he said,
'I wonder if you would tell me about this?
Pointing to the bowl.
'Oh, yes,' she replied, 'Isn't it wonderful?
I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground. The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet and that it would prevent the spread of disease.
Russia – perhaps more restrained and less powerful than you think?

Debates about the origins of Russia’s intervention into Ukraine have typically taken as given Russia’s position as a muscular, capable regional power, engaged in what Realists regard as power maximization. This perspective suggests the moves by Russia were caused by external forces and NATO’s move east, with conquest of the former Soviet space an inevitable response. Critics of this perspective suggest that Russia’s aggression was motivated either by the price of oil or domestic concerns, but nonetheless with Russian power on display. When we consider the outcomes of past episodes of Russian aggression, however, a very different conclusion appears warranted: the Russian state actually appears to be both a relatively weak and restrained power that struggles to assert hegemony in post-Soviet space.
It may be paradoxical to consider a state restrained when it has (unofficially) sent troops into Ukraine, invaded Georgia (2008), made antagonistic moves toward Estonia (2007) and recently blatantly threatened Denmark with nuclear weapons. The key, however, is to examine how coercive power is actually used, as we do in our soon-to-be released book, “Russia’s Coercive Diplomacy: Energy, Cyber, and Maritime Policy As New Forms of Power.“ In examining Russia’s use of cyber and energy power, we find the state doing almost the least it can do, and often failing to achieve the desired outcomes.
In 2007, Russia showed its capabilities in cyberspace when the Estonian government decided to move a Soviet era WWII soldiers’ grave marker from the center square of the capital Tallinn to the outskirts of the city. Seen as an insult to Russian pride, this action led to a flood of DDoS cyber incidents which bombarded Estonian private and government Web sites, disrupting commerce and government functionality for about two weeks. By 2008, in large part in response to the incident, Estonia became firmly entrenched as the headquarters for NATO’s cyber defense. The grave marker was never moved back into town, and the actions lead to the Baltic state completely removing itself from Russia’s sphere of influence — hardly a success for showing the coercive nature of Russian power.
Russia uses its power externally because domestic public opinion supports these moves, the price of gas and oil have allowed it to do so, and because its own strategic rivalry with the United States pushes the state to assert its dominion in the region of post-Soviet space. But these moves do not achieve strategic success beyond limited, seemingly pyrrhic victories. Given this, how just far will Russia really go? Russia seeks to punish its enemies, whether that be the United States, Georgia, Ukraine, or Estonia, but it can only do so in a limited fashion. And uses of this kind of power always come with consequences, often unintended.
The worry is that as Russian moves continue to fail and as the price of oil drops, it will be less restrained in the future. That being said, past behavior suggests that Russia’s leadership will continue to be restrained and rational, with saber-rattling at the forefront. Russia is not a power maximizing state, but simply a middle power trying to maintain its interests with limited strategic capabilities.
As we look ahead, the next potential flashpoint is the Arctic where Russian elites see both tremendous economic opportunities and a good prospect for success on the international stage. Here, however, Russia has worked within international law to assert its territorial rights, along with Canada, Norway, and Denmark (via Greenland). These countries are making underwater exclusive economic zone (EEZ) claims via the laws set forth by the United Nations Law on the Convention of the Sea (UNCLOS); the only state not doing so is the United States.

Eating an apple a day does not actually keep the doctor away - but it might stop you going to your pharmacist.
Researchers looked at data on 8,399 US adults and initially found evidence to support the proverb.
They discovered that those who had one small apple a day had a nine per cent lower chance of visiting the doctor several times a year.
However when they adjusted their statistics for other factors, their conclusions changed.
The University of Michigan researchers adjusted for ways that ‘apple eaters might be very different from everyone else,’ such as how they were less likely to smoke and be more educated.

Eating an apple a day does not actually keep the doctor away - but it might stop you going to your pharmacist. Apple eaters were less likely to use prescription medicines, researchers found
Considering those factors, the study found that people who eat an apple a day were just as likely as everyone else to go to doctors.
They were also just as likely to stay overnight in a hospital or visit a mental health professional.
Apple eaters were, however, less likely to use prescription medication.
Of the 8,399 adults who took part in the study 753, or nine per cent, ate an apple a day while 7,646, or 91 per cent, did not.
Lead author Matthew Davis, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan's school of nursing, said: ‘Our findings suggest that the promotion of apple consumption may have limited benefit in reducing national health care spending.
‘In the age of evidence-based assertions, however, there may be merit to saying: ‘An apple a day keeps the pharmacist away.'’
Apples have long been known to promote good health and contain vitamin C, which aids the immune system.
They also reduce tooth decay by cleaning the teeth and may even protect your brain cells from conditions like Alzheimer’s.
The proverb about eating an apple a day can be traced back to Pembrokeshire in the 1860s where it was said by locals.

Apple eaters were less likely to use prescription medicines, less likely to smoke and more educated than non-apple eaters, researchers found
The original version is said to be: ‘Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread’.
Over the years it became: ‘An apple a day, no doctor to pay’ and: ‘An apple a days sends the doctor away’.
The modern use of the phrase was first recorded in 1922.
Wendy Brannen, director of public relations for the US Apple Association, said that the research should not put people off eating apples.
She said: ‘While we appreciate the University of Michigan (a top apple-growing state, by the way) took the time to put the "apple a day" adage to the test, it's foolish to even imply you shouldn't enjoy a daily apple for your health when centuries of advice and stacks of current research would imply otherwise.’
