  Words by Dalai Lama

  • Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
  • Memorize your favorite poem.
  • Don’t believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.
  • When you say, “I love you”, mean it.
  • When you say, “I’m sorry”, look the person in the eye.

  • Be engaged at least six months before you get married.
  • Believe in love at first sight.
  • Never laugh at anyone’s dreams.
  • Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it’s the only way to live life completely.
  • In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

  • Don’t judge people by their relatives.
  • Talk slowly but think quickly.
  • When someone asks you a question you don’t want to answer, smile and ask, “Why do you want to know?”
  • Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  • Call your mom.

  • Say “bless you” when you hear someone sneeze.
  • When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
  • Remember the three R’s: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.
  • Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
  • When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

  • Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
  • Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.
  • Spend some time alone.
  • Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
  • Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

  • Read more books and watch less TV.
  • Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll get to enjoy it a second time.
  • Trust in God but lock your car.
  • A loving atmosphere in your home is so important. Do all you can to create a tranquil harmonious home.
  • In disagreements with loved ones, deal with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.

  • Read between the lines.
  • Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.
  • Be gentle with the earth.
  • Pray. There’s immeasurable power in it.
  • Never interrupt when you are being flattered.

  • Mind your own business.
  • Don’t trust a man/woman who doesn’t close his/her eyes when you kiss.
  • At least once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
  • If you make a lot of money, put it to use helping others while you are living. That is wealth’s greatest satisfaction.
  • Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a stroke of luck.

  • Learn the rules then break some.
  • Remember that the best relationship is one where your love for each other is greater than your need for each other.
  • Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
  • Remember that your character is your destiny.
  • Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

Dorothy and Edna, two "senior" widows, are talking.

Dorothy: "That nice George Johnson asked me out for a date. I know you went out with him last week, and I wanted to talk with you about him before I give him my answer."

Edna: "Well, I'll tell you. He shows up at my apartment punctually at 7 P.M., dressed like such a gentleman in a fine suit, and he brings me such beautiful flowers!
Then he takes me downstairs, and what's there but a luxury car... a limousine, uniformed chauffeur and all.
Then he takes me out for dinner... a marvelous dinner... lobster, champagne, dessert, and after-dinner drinks. Then we go see a show.
Let me tell you, Dorothy, I enjoyed it so much I could have just died from pleasure!
So then we are coming back to my apartment and he turns into an ANIMAL.
Completely crazy, he tears off my expensive new dress and has his way with me two times!"

Dorothy: "Goodness gracious! ... so you are telling me I shouldn't go out with him?"

Edna: "No, no, no ...

I'm just saying, wear an old dress."

Почему иногда употребляется had had подряд? В устной речи это звучит как-то нелепо..
Например:

We had had this arrangement for a year now

Я понимаю это так, первый глагол Had "по правилу", а второй - от давности лет (то, что они уде давно имели эту договоренность)

Я правильно рассуждаю? или тут что-то другое?
Заранее спасибо.

Why Mothers Cry…

 Why Mothers Cry…

“Why are you crying?” he asked his mom. ”Because I’m a mother,” she told him. ”I don’t understand,” he said. His mom just hugged him and said, “You never will!”

Later the little boy asked his father why Mother seemed to cry for no reason. ”All mothers cry for no reason,” was all his dad could say.

The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why mothers cry. So he finally put in a call to God and when God got on the phone the man said, “God, why do mothers cry so easily.”

God said, “You see son, when I made mothers they had to be special. I made their shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort. I gave them an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times come from their children.”

“I gave them a hardiness that allows them to keep going when everyone else gives up, and to take care of their families through sickness and fatigue without complaining.”

“I gave them the sensitivity to love their children under all circumstances, even when their child has hurt them very badly. This same sensitivity helps them to make a child’s boo-boo feel better and helps them share a teenager’s anxieties and fears.”

“I gave them a tear to shed. It’s theirs exclusively to use whenever it’s needed. It’s their only weakness. It’s a tear for mankind.” (c)
