"Monifa," a Pygmy Hippopotamus female calf, is taken out of a bath at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia. "Monifa," which means "I am lucky" in Nigerian, was born on October 15, 2008. Zoo keepers are hand-raising the calf after it struggled in the first 24 hours to stand and suckle its mother.

As the New Year struck, an overnight New England Aquarium staff person checked on the aquarium's pregnant 16-foot anaconda. She was resting comfortably in a behind-the-scenes tank. Four hours later, the snake was in the midst of a major multiple birth. When finished by about 5 a.m., there were 14 new baby anaconda, each about 2 feet long.
