My funny Valentine Sweet comic Valentine You make me smile with my heart Your looks are laughable Unphotographable But you're my favourite work of art. Is your figure? Its less than Greek Is your mouth just a little weak When you open it to speak Are you smart? Don't change a hair for me Not if you care for me Stay little Valentine stay Each day is Valentine's day. Akiko Yamamoto & Vyacheslav Gryaznov : Vyacheslav Gryaznov Rhapsody in black |
|
Akiko Yamamoto and Vyacheslav Gryaznov, pianos
Festival Wissembourg - September 7th 2013
This Rhapsody was written for two pianos for the famous duo Nikolay PETROV and Alexander GHINDIN. The premiere was scheduled for the Tchaikowsky Hall in Moscow, but sadly, Nikolay had a stroke a few weeks before the performance and died 2 months later. Nikolay had taken a very active part in the process of creating the Rhapsody, calling me almost every week to discuss progress and performance details and to give me encouragement.
His death came as a real shock. I was compelled to dedicate the Rhapsody to his memory.
I completed the orchestration this summer. Now the Rhapsody has two versions: a piano concerto version (for piano and orchestra) and concert two-piano version.
My conception of the Rhapsody was to create a coherent piece with its own story. Gershwin's opera ends with Porgy leaving for New York to find his Bess, but it's unclear if he could ever get there. If he did, what happened next? My Rhapsody invites us to consider this.
It is about a man with a disabled body but fervent soul; about his dreams, beliefs and journey to his goal. It is also about a beautiful woman with a beautiful soul, but torn by passions and limited by her weakness. It is about the end of her inner turmoil, the end of his dreams. The final conclusion, however, is left to the performers and audience.
Vyacheslav Gryaznov
The Rhapsody has 3 parts:
I. Day in New York. Porgy (Introduction, 1st Piano cadenza -- Porgy's hope, Porgy's Story, Final)
II. Bess. Night (Bess alone -- Recitative, Bess theme, cocaine theme; Variations -- Night club)
III. Bess and Porgy (2nd Piano cadenza -- Bess & Porgy's Duet, Sunrise, Lullaby, Epilogue)
Vyacheslav Gryaznov
