Language... |
"Language is the means of getting an idea from my brain into yours without surgery."
- Mark Amidon
|
Mission |
"If you read this entire guide and listen to all of the interviews and come away with a sense of what is involved in learning a language, then I feel like nothing important will actually have been achieved. You need to apply these. I'm serious!"

Ecclesiastes |
There is a time for everything. To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven.
A time to be born and a time to die : A time to plant and a time to pluck up & that which is planted.
A time to kill and a time to heal : a time to break down and a time to build up.
A time to weep and a time to laugh : a time to mourn and a time to dance.
A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together : a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing.
A time to get and a time to lose : a time to keep and a time to cast away.
A time to rend and a time to sew : a time to keep silence and a time to speak.
A time to love and a time to hate : a time of war and a time of peace.

:) |
One day a college professor of Psychology was greeting his new college class.
He stood up in front of the class and said, "Would everyone who thinks he or she is stupid please stand up?"
After a minute or so of silence, a young man stood up.
"Well, hello there sir. So you actually think you're a moron?" the professor asked.
The kid replied, "No sir, I just didn't want to see you standing there all by yourself."

Fly off the handle |
Lose self control.
This is an American phrase and it alludes to the uncontrolled way a loose axe-head flies off from its handle. It is first found in print in Thomas C. Haliburton's The Attaché; or, Sam Slick in England, 1843/4:
"He flies right off the handle for nothing."

Man Walks Nearly 3000 Miles Through China. |
The Longest Way 1.0 - walk through China and grow a beard! - TIMELAPSE from Christoph Rehage on Vimeo.
Christoph Rehage started walking on November 9, 2007 and stopped in October 2008. He traveled over 4500 kilometers (2796 miles). All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi was completely on foot. The times where you can see him in the video riding a boat or sitting on a plane are during breaks Christoph had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal issues.
Christoph was asked about his state of mind while he was walking and what he was thinking. He replied “It was just the way it would be on any normal day. Sometimes you think. Sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you worry about passports, dangers, pains, relatives and loved ones, and at other times your steps are light and you sing songs in the desert. Sometimes it is boring. And sometimes you feel at peace.”
When he was asked why he stopped walking, Christoph said, “I wanted to gain back my life. I had to regain control over myself, eliminate the inner boss that was telling me what to do. A lot of people look at the video thinking “I want to be free like that guy!” – but they don’t realize that I was driven by something, and maybe I was losing control over it.”

A shot in the arm |
A stimulus.
This expression derives from the effect of injecting drugs. A shot is of course US slang for an injection, either of a narcotic or medicinal drug. That term has been in use since around the beginning of the 20th century; for example, this piece from the San Francisco Chronicle Supplement, October 1904:
"I varied hardly a minute each day in the time of taking my injection. My first shot was when I awoke in the morning."
'A shot in the arm' came soon afterwards and the first mention of a figurative use of it in print that I can find is from the Maine newspaper The Lewiston Evening Journal, January 1916:
The vets can give politics a shot in the arm and the political leaders realize it.

ADVICE FROM THE LANGUAGE HACKING GUIDE BY BENNY LEWIS |
1) Change your want mentality to a need mentality
2) Have practical short-term aims with your language
3) Stop thinking about how hard your target language is; that will get you nowhere! Focus on the positive!
4) Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, accept that they will happen and know that this will not prevent you from communicating.
5) Using luck, talent or genes is not a good excuse. You can overcome challenges to reach your goal.
