"The esteemed Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb cites the Osiris-Rex mission, which launched in September 2016 and has already successfully travelled to the asteroid Bennu, more than 200 million miles (321 million km) from Earth. It's currently on its way back, due to return with photographs and samples in 2023. "And that will tell us if it's artificial, or, or natural," says Loeb. "And, of course, if it looks artificial, that will be very interesting. And we could land on it, and even read off the labels 'Made on Planet X'."" "Wie würden Sie die Aufgabe angehen, nach intelligentem Leben da draussen zu suchen, wenn Sie über unbegrenzte Mittel verfügten? - Als Erstes würde ich ein neues Grenzgebiet einführen, das ich Weltraumarchäologie nenne. Das heisst, wir würden jedes Objekt untersuchen, das von ausserhalb ins Sonnensystem gelangt und ungewöhnlich aussieht, also etwas ist, was nicht wie ein Komet oder ein Asteroid aussieht. Wir müssten dann entweder im Vorhinein Raumfahrzeuge ins All befördern, die um die Sonne kreisen und darauf vorbereitet sind, solche Objekte zu fotografieren. Oder wir müssten ein Alarmsystem einrichten und rasch ein Raumschiff starten, das die Flugbahn des Objekts erreichen kann. Als Nächstes würden wir auf dem Objekt landen. Wenn man das macht - so, wie die Nasa-Raumsonde Osiris Rex 2020 auf dem Asteroiden Bennu gelandet ist -, kann man eventuell vorhandene Technologie zur Erde bringen. Das könnte eine Technologie sein, die für uns in der Zukunft liegt, eine Technologie, die eine Menge Geld wert ist. Wenn wir erst mal ein Objekt gefunden haben, werden die Menschen das Potenzial erkennen. Und dann wird es eine Art Goldrausch geben, um diese Objekte aus dem All aufzuspüren, von denen wir etwas über Technologien erfahren, die wir noch nicht besitzen." Avi Loeb:"Even if these civilizations are dead, we can do space archeology. And what they mean by that is when I go to the kitchen and I find an ant, I get alarm because there must be many more ants out there. So we found 'Oumuamua, to me, it means that there must be many more out there and weird objects that do not look like a comet or an asteroid that we have seen before within the solar system. And we should search for them. And for example, in a couple of years, there would be the Vera Rubin Observatory that would be much more sensitive than the Pan-STARRS telescope and could find one such 'Oumuamua like object every month. So when we find one that approaches us and we have an alert of a year or so, we can send a spacecraft equipped with a camera that will take a close up photograph of that object and perhaps even land on it, just like OSIRIS-REx landed on the asteroid Bennu recently and collected a sample from it, because they say a picture is worth a thousand words. In my case, a picture is worth 66,000 words. The number of words in my book. If we had the photograph, I will need to write the book. It would be obvious whether it's a rock or an artificial object. And if it is artificial and we land on it, it can read off the label made on Planet 'X' and even import the technology that we find there to earth. And if it's a technology representing our future, let's say a million years into our future, it will save us a lot of time. It will give us a technological leap and it could be worth a lot of money."
