I am sorry buddy, but I have a confession to make to you. I've been riddled with guilt these past few months and have been trying to pluck up the courage to tell you to your face, but I am at least now telling you in text as I can’t live with myself a moment longer without you knowing. The truth is, I have been sharing your wife, day and night when you're not around. In fact, probably more than you.

I haven’t been getting it at home recently, but that's no excuse I know. The temptation was just too much. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies and forgive me. I promise that it won't happen again. Please come up with a fee for usage, and I'll pay you.

Meet Therese, she’s a business development manager living in Berlin, Germany. Last month, she managed to read over 100 nonfiction titles in psychology, politics and leadership.

It started with a bet. A colleague challenged her to read Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story Of Success in two hours. As determined as she was, she couldn’t meet the deadline. She got through the first few chapters relatively quickly but found it impossible to finish the book in the designated 2 hours. Although she lost the bet, she had an idea.

 

“I want to read more nonfiction books—I find it really useful to read the key takeaways from lots of books to help me get a feeling for what’s an absolute must for my to-read list!”

She found several websites, blogs and apps that transform books into ‘bite-sized’ content. If you like to read, odds are you’ve got a stack of books you’ve been meaning to get to, but haven’t been able to find the time. If this describes you, you’re far from alone. There are libraries full of books offering potentially life-changing information, but the reality is there’s no way to read every single one.

According to science, though, you can likely get a lot closer than you think. To help you become a phenomenally fast reader, here are a five scientifically backed strategies and an app that employs a science-based approach to help you to read more in less time.

1. Concentrate on keywords

Instead of giving every word equal weight, concentrate on longer words with more meaning, and your brain will fill in the gaps. Jot down crucial information (digitally or on paper), and realize you don’t need to memorize everything—you simply need to understand it.

2. Spot thought groups

Rather than pausing on individual words, picture phrases separated by invisible slashes. By consuming sentences in chunks instead of parsing every word, you’re eyes will grow conditioned to moving forward more quickly and without sacrificing comprehension.

3. Hone your peripheral vision

To achieve true mastery of reading, make the most of your peripheral vision. Strengthen this skill by quickly glancing at phrases then attempting to recite them. The indenting method builds off this by suggesting readers aim their eyes on the center of a line of text, without focusing on words within a half inch of either margin.

4. Stop subvocalizing

Subvocalizing, the practice of silently speaking every word you read in your head, seriously slows down the reading process. That’s because the brain is capable of processing 400 words per minute, yet the average person can speak only 150 words during that time. Try humming, chewing gum, or focusing on the space above each line of text to overcome this common impediment.

5. Lead with your finger

Use a pen or your finger to snake across and down a page of text, and your eyes will automatically follow your movement while absorbing most of the words.

Cover text you’ve already read with your other hand or a piece of paper to train your eyes to refrain from rereading.

These five tips should put you on the path to becoming a speedier reader.

1. Do not watch TV. Never.

2. Don't go back to people who betrayed you. They don't change.

3. Came up with the idea? Record. Sometime it is useful to you!

4. Late? Find a way to warn about it. It's not that hard.

5. Don't laugh at other people's dreams. Consider your.

6. Tell the truth, and then not have anything to remember.

7. Don't spread gossip. Any good they will not.

8. Courtesy conquers the city. Use often, gentlemen.

9. Learn to admit their mistakes.

10. Refrain from habits all the time to complain. No one is interested in other people's problems.

11. There is such a thing as "to Move on, no matter what". Try, to help.




12. In obscure situations always go to bed. In any situations, it is useful to remember that "this too shall pass".

13. Even with a serious quarrel not try to hurt the person for a living... You make peace (most likely), and the words will be remembered for a long time...

Any dentist will tell you that brushing your teeth is a very important part of your daily routine, since it keeps your teeth in top form and helps you maintain good oral hygiene. However, what they don’t often tell you is that many common toothpaste brands contain ingredients that may damage your health in the long-run.

 

Store-bought toothpaste often contains sodium hydroxide, titanium dioxide, synthetic dyes, artificial sweeteners, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and sodium fluoride, and each of these has been shown to be harmful to the body if ingested. However, the most dangerous offender of all is fluoride, which has been proven to present a whole range of complications.

 

 


That’s why I decided to stop buying toothpaste once and for all, and to start making it myself instead. Making your own toothpaste isn’t as hard as it sounds, and is just as effective as any store-bought brand, without the harmful additives. I find that my own concoctions tend to taste much better as well, and I always keep a selection handy so that I can vary the flavor from one day to the next.

Some widely held conspiracy theories seem so absurd on their face that you wonder how they ever gained any traction: All the Jewish people who worked in the World Trade Center were warned in advance of the 9/11 attacks? The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary was perpetrated by gun-control advocates, or was invented by the media for its own nefarious purposes? Hillary Clinton masterminded a child-sex ring that operated out of a Washington, D.C. pizza parlor? But the unnerving fact is that some people not only believe in these theories, but cling to them with such tenaciousness that other, equally gullible folks find them extremely convincing. So why do so many people believe in conspiracy theories in the first place? Here are the likeliest explanations.

When Homo sapiens first started walking the savannahs of Africa, a hundred thousand years ago, alertness was an important trait: if you were the first member of your tribe to glimpse a hungrysaber-toothed tiger, or to hear a distant clap of thunder, you were more likely to survive the day and go on to have children. In our modern age, though, hyper-alertness can be more a deficit than an advantage. At its most extreme it manifests itself as clinical paranoia (why did that streetlight outside my window flicker when I picked up my coffee mug? Is the CIA watching me?), and in its more moderate forms, it often leads to the tendency of conspiracy theorists to "over-interpret" visual and auditory evidence and connect dots that simply aren't there (for example, watching and re-watching grainy footage of the Kennedy assassination). This is simply the way the brains of some people are structured; there's not much you can do except calmly point out alternative (and more sensible) explanations!

В один пронзительно жаркий день Песаха мы отправились туда, где жара такая, как надо, жара – не влажная и липкая, а сухая и знойная, так похожая на лето моего детства. Мы отправились в самое сердце пустыни, к её жемчужине и королеве. Отправились ставить новую «Точку над i» – наш путь лежал в красавицу Беэр-Шеву.

Надо сказать, что для меня эта поездка была особенной, выделяющийся из всех прочих – ведь Беэр-Шева для меня значит то же, что Рамле значит для [info]lyolik_il: это города-колыбели, введшие нас, молодых новых репатриантов в большой мир Израиля. Именно с этими двумя событиями связывают название города, которое переводится либо как “Колодец семи”, либо как “Колодец клятвы»

Jelani Cobb on an Uneasy America

We live in a contradictory moment. A little more than eight years ago, the election of the first American-American President coincided with a period of renewed racial unrest. Last year saw the election of a new President, who started his campaign by questioning the very legitimacy of his predecessor. How do we begin to make sense of such events? Jelani Cobb’s pieces for The New Yorker provide a vital guide. Cobb has been a professor of African-American history, and he combines a historian’s sense of context with a reporter’s eye for detail, and his own life experiences, to explore issues of race, class, and equality, and to find the universal elements of each story he approaches.

In “Class Notes,” Cobb laments the closure, after more than a century, of his alma mater, Jamaica High School. Once the largest high school in the country, and long a symbol of academic excellence, the school became a victim of the education wars, and Cobb chronicles the toll that the loss of a vital public institution takes on an inner-city community. In “The Matter of Black Lives,” Cobb describes the birth of a new kind of movement, and why it chose to oppose the models of the civil-rights movement. In “Prodigy of Hate,” Cobb attends the trial of Dylann Roof, for the murders at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, in Charleston, and examines the many moral complications that the court case posed for the city. Then there are three shorter pieces: in “Taking It to the Streets,” he correctly predicts the resistance that would meet the incoming Trump Administration; in “Barack X,” he analyzes President Obama as a role model for black youth; and in “A State Away” he warns of the possibility of state legislatures calling for a constitutional convention and literally taking the law of the land into their own hands.
