FLOATING RUNNER

Every time Kayla Montgomery crosses the finish line, she collapses into her coach’s arms. Her legs are completely numb, so much so, that she pleads with her team to “find” her legs as they place ice packs on her to cool her down.

At 18, Kayla is one of the top distance runners in the U.S, but she also suffers from a debilitating disease called “MS” or Multiple Sclerosis. This rare disease affects the nervous system and can cause numbness throughout the body. When body heat rises (like during a race), MS symptoms increase.

This means that Kayla runs most of the race with her legs completely numb. She says she feels like she’s floating, making it very difficult to gage her speed. At the finish line she can’t stop on her own, so her coach literally has to catch her before she falls.

It’s easy to assume that Kayla was always a star runner, whopersevered despite the diagnosis. But actually, the opposite is true. Before her diagnosis, Kayla says she was even considered slow. But when doctors told her that MS could eventually prevent her from walking, Kayla decided to use her legs as much as possible while she still had the chance.

She joined the cross-country team at her school. Her coach says at first, she was “average at best.” But with time and perseverance, Kayla astonished everyone by becoming one of the best runners in the U.S.

“Instead of letting it stop me from running, I’ve used it to motivate me to break records,” said Kayla.

She qualified for the state championship race. The crowd gasped as Kayla fell to the ground during the first lap of the 3,200 meter race. But instead of letting disappointment overcome her, she let it fuelher again. She got back on her feet and, shockingly, she caught up with the pack. With a final burst of energy, she took the lead and won.

While some competitors say she has an unfair advantage because she can’t feel pain in her legs while running, most people agree that the fact that she’s competing at all is extraordinary. Her neurologistsays MS hasn’t benefited her physically in any way. Instead, sheattributes the teen’s remarkable accomplishments to a “mental edge.”

Kayla allowed a traumatic diagnosis to inspire her to live a more meaningful life. Have you ever turned what seemed like a crisis into an opportunity?

This is Steve Ember with a VOA Special Englishholiday program.

Music fills the air. Colorful lights shine brightly inwindows.

Children and adults open gifts from lovedones and friends.

These are all Christmas traditions.

Another tradition is snow. Christmas in the northernpart of the world comes a few days after the start ofwinter. In many places, a blanket of clean white snowcovers the ground on Christmas Day. This is what ismeant by a “White Christmas.”

Of course, many places do not get snow at Christmas. In fact, they may bevery warm this time of year.

People who like snow, but live where it is warm, can only dream of having a white Christmas.

American songwriter Irving Berlin captured these feelings

in his song WhiteChristmas.” It is one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. Theopening words explain why the singer is dreaming of a white Christmas. Mostpeople never hear these words, so they

never really understand the truemeaning of the song. Here’s how it starts:

The sun is shining.
The grass is green.
The orange and palm trees sway.
I’ve never seen such a day in Beverly Hills, L.A.
But it’s December the 24th
And I’m longing to be up north.
Up north, where it is cold and snowy.
Not south, where it is warm and sunny.

Over the years, hundreds of singers and musicians have recorded

WhiteChristmas.” But the version most people still know best was sung by BingCrosby.

Songwriter Irving Berlin was born in Russia in 1888. He did not celebrateChristmas as a religious holiday. He was Jewish.

But his song celebrates an idea of peace and happiness that anyone,

anywhere -- snowy or not -- can enjoy.

To all of you, best wishes this holiday season from all of us in VOA SpecialEnglish.

Levels of language proficiency
There are several levels of proficiency in a foreign language. Very often, these levels indicate in the summary. Write a "basic" knowledge or "know fluently", "own to perfection."
In contrast to the above classification, there is a more precise classification of levels of language proficiency. And So:
1.

English on the Forum ‘A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!’

After reading this, you’ll never look at a banana in the same way again

This is interesting. After reading this, you’ll never look at a banana in the same way again.

Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.
Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.
But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

DEPRESSION
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
PMS:
Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

ANEMIA
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
BLOOD PRESSURE:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

BRAIN POWER
200 students at a Twickenham school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

CONSTIPATION
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

HANGOVERS
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

HEARTBURN
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

MORNING SICKNESS
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
MOSQUITO BITES:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

NERVES
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system..
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort foodlike chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

ULCERS
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chroniclercases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL
Many other cultures see bananas as a ‘cooling’ fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, ‘A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!’

North parable

Once the forest brown bear went to the north, to the sea. At this time, the marine polar bear went over the ice to the south, to the ground. Near the coast the sea they met. The white bear fur stood on end. He said:

- What are you doing, brown, on my land go?

Brown said:

- When you had it, the earth then? Your place in the sea! Your land - floe!

Polar bear reared. Brown bear stood up on its hind legs. They grabbed and began fighting. Fought until noon - no one beat. Fought until evening. Both tired and sat down. Silent. Brown spoke first. He said:

- You're white, seems to be stronger. But I - agile, uvёrtlivee. Therefore, none of us will not take the top. Yes, and that we share? After all, we're brothers.

Polar Bear said:

- That's right, we're brothers. And we have nothing to share. Our land is boundless.

Forest Bear said:

- Yes, my forests are enormous. I have nothing to do in your ice.

Marine Bear said:

- And I have nothing to do in your woods. Yes I there never came! Let's live each in his place and do not interfere with each other.

Forest Bear went back into the forest. Marine Bear left on the beach.

Since then, the owner of the forest live in the forest, the owner lives in the sea views. And nobody does not interfere with each other.

Putin seeks to ease fears over Russian economic crisis

Mr Putin said every country had "a right to choose how to protect itself"

President Vladimir Putin has sought to ease fears over Russia's economy, insisting that the dramatic fall in the rouble will stabilise.

Speaking at his end-of-year news conference, which lasted over three hours, he blamed "outside factors" for the currency hitting an all-time low.

But he admitted Russia's central bank could have acted more swiftly.

Russia is on the verge of recession due to falling oil prices and sanctions over its role in the Ukraine crisis.

However, the president denied pursuing an "aggressive" foreign policy and accused the US and EU of conspiring to weaken Russia.

'Growth inevitable'

Mr Putin accepted Russia had failed to diversify its economy for the past two decades and relied too heavily on its oil and gas exports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during his annual press conference in Moscow - 18 December 2014The Russian leader took questions from journalists in Moscow on several topics for more than three hours

But he insisted the nation's currency reserves were sufficient to keep the economy stable, saying the central bank should not "burn" its $419bn reserves.

BBC News.Magazine.Me, my friend Pru, and our memories

5 December 2014 Last updated at 23:08 GMT

With old age comes the increasing likelihood of memory loss. But when should we worry, asks Joan Bakewell.

Getting old just happens of course. It creeps up on you when you aren't looking and suddenly you're forgetting names and losing keys. At once alarm bells ring - could this be the first indication of dementia?

I am in my 80s now and I would be foolish not to consider whether these irritating incidents are more than simple forgetfulness. I console myself - wasn't I always forgetful, without taking it as a sign of something significant?

When I mentioned the problem to my novelist friend Malcolm Bradbury, he sympathised. "But Joan, you and I have stuffed our brains full throughout our lives, we shouldn't be surprised if some of it begins to fall off the shelf." I felt better, and carried on being randomly forgetful.

But now the argument has quickened. Dementia is growing in its impact as we all live longer lives. It's reckoned there are more than 800,000 sufferers in the UK. When and how will I know if I am one of them?

It's estimated 61% of people worry that they may be afflicted in the future - that number rises to 66% for the over 55s. At least I am not alone. Indeed I am among friends.

I have known the actors Timothy West and his wife Prunella Scales for four decades. If we aren't exactly in and out of each other's houses, we certainly go to each other's parties, exchange Christmas cards and rejoice in the successes of children and, more recently, grandchildren.

Joan Bakewell

Over the past year they together have decided to go public on the fact that Pru has dementia.

It first began with lines. Pru has had a distinguished career for over 50 years. She has starred in some of television's most popular series: Marriage Lines, opposite Richard Briers, After Henry, Mapp and Lucia, and of course, as Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers. About 15 years ago she began to notice it was getting harder to remember lines. She put it down to age.

Her last stage appearance was five years ago in Carrie's War in the West End. Of course, work continues with voiceovers which she can still handle with her usual flair and aplomb. But their doctor indicated that her condition would get worse. It is getting worse, but only slowly.

John Cleese and Prunella Scales

I enter their home exactly as I know it, full of welcome and laughter, cups of tea and theatre gossip. But there are differences - a huge whiteboard in the kitchen lists in order the things Pru will be doing that day. A trained helper, Meegan, familiar with the progression of dementia, has moved in to live with them. She goes about her caring with a tactful absence of fuss.

We sit and talk about the how much their lives are affected and it becomes clear there are two narratives here. Pru complains of occasionally forgetting things - "but then I am 82 years old - surely that's allowed".

But she is shocked when Tim explains how at a party Pru will tell someone the same anecdote time after time. "Oh, I don't do that do I? Surely not. Oh how dreadful." I hear in her outrage the familiar response of the Pru I know. But her response is characteristic of the denial which is common among dementia sufferers.

The fact is dementia is changing her and their lives together, but as in the best of marriages it is a shift rather than a catastrophe. Tim clearly feels the loss - when they go out for the evening together they both enjoy the event, but once back home Pru can't talk about it because it has already slipped from her memory.

I leave for home reflecting on how several friends of my generation are now drifting into this unknown world. I wonder about my own forgetfulness and decide it is, so far as I can tell, of a quite different order. Nonetheless it is evident enough for me to take small avoiding steps - sticky notes left around the house, a notepad beside the bed, a list of things to do each day.

But then didn't I do that already when the overload of my busy life threatened to engulf me? I have been a journalist for over 40 years, working in different media and keeping tabs on what I do through well-ordered and sometime scruffy diaries, shelves of files and dependence on the support of agents and editors. The agents and editors might well say their support has got stronger in recent months. I happily take for granted their loyalty and friendship. A network of obligations that keeps me busy and committed is keeping me on track. If dementia looms, I simply haven't time to notice.

Nonetheless what I've been learning about early intervention, the memory clinics, the ongoing research, is enough to persuade me that staying alert for symptoms and confronting fears early is the best way to grow old. I know I shall be taking those memory tests one day soon.

The UK is only now gearing up to meet the enormous challenge dementia presents for the future. There will always be a struggle for resources and new skills. If individuals can help with their own diagnoses, rather than hide away from bad news, then that will help.

There's no denying the harrowing experience of families whose members no longer know who they are. But my friends Tim and Pru have shown me that there can still sometimes be happiness and laughter to be got out of life.

Chanukah -- the eight-day festival of light that begins on the eve of the 25th of the Jewish month of Kislev -- celebrates the triumph oflight over darkness, of purity overadulteration, of spirituality over materiality.

More than twenty-one centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks), who sought to forcefully Hellenize the people of /w3.beta.chabad.org/images/1/global/glossary_underline.gif" target="_blank">http://w3.beta.chabad.org/images/1/global/glossary_underline.gif) repeat-x 50% 100%; cursor: pointer">Israel. When they sought to light the Temple's menorah (the seven branched candelabrum), they found only a single cruse of olive oil that had escaped contamination by the Greeks; miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days, until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity.

To commemorate and publicize these miracles, the sages instituted the festival of /w3.beta.chabad.org/images/1/global/glossary_underline.gif" target="_blank">http://w3.beta.chabad.org/images/1/global/glossary_underline.gif) repeat-x 50% 100%; cursor: pointer">Chanukah. Monday, December 15, is the deadline for China toprovide an argument against a Philippines legal caseabout Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea. But China rejects the case before an international courtand refuses to answer. At the same time, objections toChina’s position are increasing.

The Philippines provided a 4,000-page paper ofsupporting materials for its case before the PermanentCourt of Arbitration. It questions the legal basis forChina’s so-called nine-dash line territorial claim. Thearea China claims covers about 80 percent of the sea. The legal paper also asks the court for guarantees onPhilippines territorial claim. The Philippines says itsclaim is part of its continental shelf and well within its 370-kilometer exclusive economic zone.

Last week, a Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesmansays that his government fully rejects China’s claimbefore the court. The claim was over a group of islandsin the South China Sea, the Paracel and the Spratly, and the surrounding waters.

The Philippine government praises Vietnam’s position. It says the position would be “helpful in terms ofpromoting the rule of law and in finding peaceful andnonviolent solutions to the South China Sea claims.”

But China’s Foreign Ministry urges Vietnam to respectChina's territorial independence and maritime rightsand interests.

Earlier, China released a paper to state its position in the dispute. The positionpaper claims that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea doesnot address territorial dispute.

China says its claims to the sea date back 2,000 years. It argues that it was the first to “discover, name and explore islands under dispute among China,Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam China also has saidrepeatedly that it has the right to ignore legal cases on issues related to seaborders.

A Philippine foreign affairs spokesman said this about China’s position, “Thearguments raised by China are not new anymore.  We know them and wehave answered those arguments in the memorial we submitted.”

Carl Thayer is an Asia security expert at the Australian Defense ForceAcademy. He says that China is making an appeal to the tribunal by releasingits position paper, although it is avoiding official court action.

“To a certain extent it will be welcome by some of the judges because at leastthey have, they now know, a little bit more about what China’s claiming.”

Mr. Thayer says the judges also will look at a study that the U.S. StateDepartment released several days before China’s position paper. The U.S.says it is neutral on territorial disputes. But, the study examined the basis forChina’s nine-dash line. The study found the claim has no basis in internationallaw.

"Subscribe.Ru" A woman was thinking about finding a pet

A woman was thinking about finding a pet to keep her company at home. She decided she would like to find a beautiful parrot; it wouldn't be as much work as say, a dog, and it would be fun to hear it speak. She went to a pet shop and immediately spotted a large beautiful parrot. She went to the owner of the store and asked how much. The owner said it was 50 bucks. Delighted that such a rare looking and beautiful bird wasn't more expensive, she agreed to buy it.

The owner looked at her and said, "Listen, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a whorehouse. Sometimes it says pretty vulgar stuff." The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird. She said she would buy it anyway. The pet-shop owner sold her the bird and she took it home. She hung the bird's cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something.

The bird looked around the room, then at her, and said, "New house, new madam." The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought, "That's not so bad."

A couple hours later, the woman's two teenage daughters returned from school. When they inspected the bird, it looked at them and said, "New house, new madam, new whores." The girls and the woman were a bit offended at first, but then began to laugh about the situation.

A couple of hours later, the woman's husband came home from work. The bird looked at him and said, "New house, new madam, new whores; same old faces. Hi George!"

Now, the VOA Special English program Words and Their Stories.

Santa Claus is someone who will remain in the hearts of children forever. He is the make-believe person who brings toys and other gifts to children atChristmas. To grown-ups, he is a special symbol of good will and selflessgiving.

Santa Claus also has some other names: Saint Nicholas, St. Nick, KrisKringle,

 Pelznickel.

Two of his names -- Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas -- both come from theDutch who settled in New York long ago.

The Dutch believed Saint Nikolaas gave gifts to children. They honored

thiskindly saint with a yearly festival on December 6th. The English-speakingpeople who lived nearby greatly enjoyed Dutch festivals. And they brought thesaint and the custom of giving gifts into their own celebration at Christmastime.

The Dutch version of Santa Claus, Sinterklaas, or Saint Nicholas, and his blackface helpers Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) arrive by steamboat in Hoorn, northwestern Netherlands, Nov. 16, 2013.The Dutch version of Santa Claus, Sinterklaas, or Saint Nicholas, and his blackface helpers Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) arrive by steamboat in Hoorn, northwestern Netherlands, Nov. 16, 2013.

The Dutch spoke the name Saint Nikolaas very fast. Itsounded like Sinterklaas.” And so, when the Englishsaid this word, it sounded like Santa Claus.

West of New York, in Pennsylvania, many Germanfarmers had also heard of Saint Nikolaas. But theycalled him Pelznickel. This word came from “pelz,”meaning fur, and “nickel” for Nicholas. And so, to theGermans of Pennsylvania, Saint Nicholas or Pelznickelwas a man dressed in fur who came once a year withgifts for good children.

Soon, people began to feel that the love and kindness Pelznickel broughtshould be part of a celebration honoring the Christkindl, as the Germanscalled the Christ child. After a time, this became Kris Kringle.” Later, KrisKringle became another name

for Santa Claus himself.

Whatever he is called, he is still the same short, fat, jolly old man with a long beard, wearing a red suit

withwhite fur.

The picture of Santa Claus, as we see him, came fromThomas Nast. He was an American painter born inBavaria. He painted pictures for Christmas poems.Someone asked him to paint

a picture of Santa Claus.

Nast remembered when he was a little boy in southernGermany. Every Christmas, a fat old man gave toysand cakes to the children. So, when Nast painted the picture, his Santa Clauslooked

like the kindly old man of his childhood. And through the years, Nast’spainting has remained as the most popular picture Of Santa Claus.

Santa can be seen almost everywhere in large American cities during

theChristmas season. Some stand on street corners asking for money

to buyfood and gifts for the needy. Others are found in stores and shopping centers.

It is easy to find them by the long lines of childrenwaiting to tell Santa what they want for Christmas.

13 Proven Health Benefits of Coffee (No. 1 is My Favorite)

By Kris Gunnars |

Woman Smiling With a Tiny Cup of CoffeeCoffee is actually very healthy.

It is loaded with antioxidants and beneficial nutrients that can improve your health.

The studies show that coffee drinkers have amuch lower risk of several serious diseases.

Here are the top 13 evidence-based health benefits of coffee, that have been confirmed in actual human studies.

1. Coffee Can Improve Energy Levels and Make You Smarter

Coffee can help people feel less tired and increase energy levels (1, 2).

This is because it contains a stimulant called caffeine, which is actually the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world (3).

After you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into the bloodstream. From there, it travels into the brain (4).

In the brain, caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine.

When that happens, the amount of other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine actually increases, leading to enhanced firing of neurons (5, 6).

Many controlled trials in humans show that coffee improves various aspects of brain function. This includes memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and general cognitive function (7, 8, 9).

Bottom Line: Caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, which leads to a stimulant effect. This improves energy levels, mood and various aspects of brain function.

2. Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat

BBC News.Magazine. How dangerous is sea swimming in cold weather?

How dangerous is sea swimming in cold weather?

By Tom de CastellaBBC News Magazine

Man in swimsuit contemplates cold sea

Brighton's historic Christmas Day swim has been cancelled for safety reasons. How dangerous is sea swimming in cold weather?

On Christmas Day 1885 a few hardy souls hobbled across Brighton's pebbly beach and into the chilly English Channel.

That first Brighton Christmas Day swim has become a much-copied ritual around the world. But this year it's been called off. And it seems unlikely the event, which has always been run by the Brighton Swimming Club, will ever be coming back.

Brighton & Hove City Council - supported by the swimming club - says it's become too dangerous. It will close off the beach around the Palace Pier to dissuade people from entering the water on Christmas Day.

"Sea swimming takes skill, stamina and knowledge of the physical dangers and should only be for the very experienced, using suitable wetsuits, in very calm conditions and with a friend," says the council's seafront manager Chris Ingall. The council says it has no plans to bring the swim back in future years.

Marking Christmas and New Year by diving into a cold sea has grown in popularity. Beach swims will be taking place at Southwold in Suffolk, Whitby in North Yorkshire, Porthcawl in south Wales, Prestwick in Ayrshire, Bangor in County Down, and numerous places in Cornwall. Scotland's biggest New Year swim is the Loony Dook in the Firth of Forth. The River Dart in Devon, and lakes, such as the Serpentine in London, have festive dips, as do unheated lidos.

A Brighton swimmer at Christmas

There's a camaraderie to it, says Lynne Roper, a member of the Outdoor Swimming Society who often swims - without a wetsuit - around Burgh Island in Devon on Christmas Eve. And it makes a nice contrast with Christmas excess: "It's the antithesis of being warm and cosy in front of the fire with lots of food. It's almost pagan - leaping into the freezing cold. You get a massive adrenalin rush and it sets you up for the rest of the day." You can then go and hunker down in front of the fire feeling like you've earned it, she says.

It's not just the UK. Dublin Bay has its Forty Foot Swim in the Irish Sea, Barcelona has held the 200m Copa Nadal race since 1907, thousands of Dutch people run into the sea in the traditional Nieuwjaarsduik (New Year's dive) near the Hague. There are many "polar bear plunges" across the US and Canada on 1 January.

HEART SYNC

Do you know someone who seems to magically lift your mood without saying a word? When the Dalai Lama visits a city, residents often say they feel peaceful simply by being in his presence.

Researchers believe that peaceful people’s hearts emit uplifting waves that affect nearby hearts. This may explain why some people make us feel so good while others leave us feeling deflated.

In English, an intimate, honest conversation is called a ‘heart-to-heart’. Across cultures, humans refer to the heart when they talk about feeling love. We often gesture towards our hearts when asked to point to ourselves.

Intuitively, we’ve guessed that the heart is more than just an organ, but now science supports this inkling.

The heart produces a strong electromagnetic field that extends several feet from the body. New studies reveal that the stronger the field, the more likely it is to affect the hearts of others.

Incredibly, we can strengthen our heart’s waves just by changing our attitudes. When feeling a positive emotion like gratitude, waves begin to flow with more stability. In some cases, hearts will even begin beating in sync with the strongest heart waves in the room.

When hearts sync up, those involved often experience similar emotions. This explains why a monk meditating on love can brighten someone’s mood without saying or doing anything at all. Negative emotions, though influential, aren’t as powerful because they produceerratic, shorter waves.

In 1993, 4,000 meditators gathered in Washington D.C. hoping to bring peace to the city. For three weeks they met daily and focused on sending out peace. During this time, police were astonished to report a 23 percent drop in crime with no other explanation.

Could it be that the meditators’ positive emotions created a collective field so strong it affected the whole city? Some theorists say as hearts around the city began to sync up, crime went down.

Romantic couples also experience frequent synchronization between hearts. In one study, couples sat a few feet from each other without speaking or touching. Within moments, couples’ hearts began to beatin tandem. Pregnant mothers and their babies experience a similarconnection.

We’re all capable of profoundly influencing those around us, even when we aren’t trying to. At the same time, whoever we spend our time with may be affecting our lives in ways we never imagined. With this new information will you be more aware of what kind of waves you might be emitting? Will you choose more peaceful, positive company?

Salt Is More Than a Four-Letter Word

India is the world's third largest salt producing country in the world. Here, a worker walks through a mountain of salt near the southern Indian city of Chennai in April 2014.

On today’s Words and Their Stories we talk about acommon word, a small word, but a word that iscompletely necessary for human life. In fact, withoutthis simple, everyday material, all humans would die.

Scientists know it as sodium chloride. We know it assalt.

You may think, salt is just a simple cooking element we shake on our food for a little extra taste. But salt is much more than that.

Without salt our muscles would not move. Our nervous systems would notoperate.

Our hearts would not beat. Salt means life.

But do not think rubbing salt in a wound will help. Doing that would be painfuland not heal the wound. To rub salt in a wound is an idiom that means topurposefully make a bad situation worse.

Early humans got the salt they needed to stay alive from the animals theykilled. But advances in agriculture led to a diet low in salt. So, humans neededto find others sources.

Those who lived near the ocean or other natural sources for salt were lucky.

Those who did not had to trade for salt. In fact, people used salt as a methodof payment in many parts of the ancient world. The word salary comes from the word salt.”

Salt also played an important part in population movement and worldexploration.

Explorers understood that if they could keep food fresh, they couldtravel longer

distances. So they used salt to preserve food and explored theworld.

Salt meant movement.

Salt also changed the way nations fought. With preserved food on ships, nations

could sail to distant lands … and then attack them.

Salt meant power.

Salt was so important that, according to food historians, it was traded pound-for-pound for gold. Today, people still use the expressions to be worth one’s salt or worth one’s weight in salt. The expressions describe a person whois useful, a person of value.

A person might also be called salt of the earth. That description means he or she is dependable and trustworthy. The phrase comes from the ChristianBible. Jesus called his loyal group of followers -- or disciples -- the salt of the earth.

Actors re-act "The Last Supper" as part of Easter festivities in the Czech Republic city of Ceska Lipa. (April 2014)

But one of these disciples was not so loyal. The disciple Judas betrayedJesus. In his famous painting “The Last Supper,” Leonardo da Vinci showsJudas spilling

a bowl of salt. Spilled salt is a sign of bad luck and trouble. Andtrouble is exactly what Judas gave Jesus.

Even today, some people throw salt over one shoulder if they spill it. Theybelieve throwing

salt behind them scares any devil that has been followingthem -- or at least blinds it for a second while they run away.

But these stories about bad luck should be taken with a grain of salt. Inother words, listen to a story or an explanation with suspicion and distrust.

But you don’t have to take the information you find on VOA Learning Englishwith a grain of salt. We do our research.

And this research led to some interesting facts about salt in other cultures andreligions.

In 2200 BC, the Chinese emperor Xia Yu created one of the first known taxes. He taxed salt. And Egyptians preserved dead bodies with salt, creatingmummies.

This mummy is Ahmose Meyret Amon, an Egyptian princess who was between 40 and 45 years when she died. She lived about 1580–1550 BCE and was found near modern day Luxor. (The Lancet)

The Catholic Church uses salt in many of its rituals. Buddhists use salt toprevent evil. In Japan, the Shinto religion uses salt to clean an area of evil. In the U.S. Southwest, the Pueblo people worship the Salt Mother.

And in 1933, the Dalai Lama was buried sitting up in a bed of salt. Today inIndia, salt is still a symbol of good luck.

What about your culture? Do you have any idioms or expressions about salt? In the comments section, share a story of salt from your culture.

The pro-European revolution in Ukraine was one of the big stories this year. Ukraine replaced its pro-Russia president with leaders interested in reaching out to the rest of Europe. But a short time later, Ukraine lostcontrol of the Crimean peninsula to Russia. And theRussian government continues to support pro-Russiarebels in Ukraine’s east.

Many people are worried the country will remain weakor conditions will

worsen in the weeks to come. Somepolitical observers say the Russian actions are athreat to both Russia and Ukraine.

The leaders of Ukraine recently marked the anniversaryof the country’s Euromaidan revolution not withcelebration, but as a serious event. One year haspassed since the start of protests that led to the ousterof President Viktor Yanukovych. Family members ofprotesters

killed in the clashes have yet to see justice. And thousands of people have died in fighting with pro-Russian rebels in theeast.

The fighting has been a major concern for Ukraine’s new leaders. YuriYakymenko is with the

Razumkov Center in the capital, Kyiv.

He says that, “For the first time in the independent history of Ukraine, we are in a state of war against the biggest aggressor … we can even say adversary. We should call it like it is.”

But most Ukrainians say the sacrifice for a European future is worth it.Valentina Bilan was among the protesters in Kyiv.

She says, “We’ve elected a parliament. Let’s hope that it will work. Everythingwill be fine in time. We will remember my words. I went through the OrangeRevolution. The scariest thing after revolution is that people should not bedisappointed.”

The fighting has also moved attention away from economic and

politicalreforms in Ukraine and Russia. Conditions in both countries are

getting worse.

Yuri Pivovarov is with Russia’s Academy of Sciences. He says the decision ofPresident Vladimir Putin to expand into Ukraine is a threat to Russia’sdemocratic successes. He says the war in Ukraine is also a war in Russia. InRussia, says Mr. Pivovarov, the whole government is warring against peoplewho oppose Russia’s

policies or have a different opinion.

Dmitri Trenin is director of the Carnegie Moscow Center. He says there appears to be little interest in a much-needed compromise between Russia and Ukraine.

Particularly in the West, because any compromise at this point will be seen as a concession to Putin. And this is totally unacceptable. But if that’s the case, then the only exit out of it should be the collapse of the regime here. And since this is how it is more or less read in the Kremlin, this raises the stakes enormously high for Russia.”

Ukraine’s leaders will have a lot of work in the months ahead. They will seek to deal with a Russia that is becoming more powerful. At the same time, they will have to reform the corrupt political culture that led to the Euromaidan revolution.

Emotional issues such as stress and anxiety can prevent you from sleeping properly and can lead to insomnia. To avoid it, consider adding some delicious foods rich with these seven essential nutrients to your daily diet to fall asleep faster and sleep better at night. They work like a charm!

1. Magnesium

Magnesium

Magnesium boasts numerous relaxing properties that can help you fall asleep the moment you hit the sack. Magnesium lowers anxiety, relieves headaches, reduces high blood pressure, and can even relieve PMS. While a magnesium 400 milligram supplement can help (make sure you consult your doctor before taking any supplement), eating magnesium-rich foods is more effective. Seeds, nuts, carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, fish, whole grains, dark chocolate, kiwi fruits and bananas are all rich in magnesium.

BBC News.President Putin urges Russian resilience for hard times

4 December 2014 Last updated at 13:41 GMT

President Putin: "The times we are facing are hard and difficult"

President Vladimir Putin has warned Russians of hard times ahead and urged self-reliance, in his annual state-of-the nation address to parliament.

Russia has been hit hard by falling oil prices and by Western sanctions imposed in response to its interventions in the crisis in neighbouring Ukraine.

The rouble, once a symbol of stability under Mr Putin, suffered its biggest one-day decline since 1998 on Monday.

The government has warned that Russia will fall into recession next year.

Speaking to both chambers in the Kremlin, Mr Putin also accused Western governments of seeking to raise a new "iron curtain" around Russia.

He expressed no regrets for annexing Ukraine's Crimea peninsula, saying the territory had a "sacred meaning" for Russia.

Russian scientists have invented an elixir of youth

Russian scientists from Moscow State University have invented an elixir of youth. In the laboratory, the University experienced by they got a substance that can actually slow down the aging process. Thus, Russian scientists have made that have not yet managed to anyone in the world.

The liquid is evaporated in a special device, the concentration of the substance was higher then it is poured into the tank. This medication should be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature of -19.

Elixir cures old dying cells. A unique set of antioxidants tested on rats at the University of Stockholm - the results shocked: rodents prolong youth twice, two-year - went for the six relatives.

Tests have already passed and larger animals - horses and dogs, slepnuschih of old age. They injected the drug, and vision to all returned. The first experience on a man put himself on the author of the study - the octogenarian biologist Skulachev.

First - scientists have developed eye drops, they have already been approved by the Ministry of Health. Now - all power thrown at Elixir.

The medicine will not only help extend the "shelf life" of, and may be the prevention of serious neurological diseases. For example, Alzheimer's disease, which unsuccessfully trying to fight scientists around the world for many years.

As will be sold and how much it will cost this magical elixir, Russian scientists have not yet thought of. source

Furman Lidia(Israel)-C

 Google translate

Cidit Mohammed squatting in Amsterdam and spits on the ground through a hole in the teeth. Suddenly Fairy appears and says:

- I'm a socialist social liberal fairy! I flew to fulfill three wishes!

  - Look what I have a hole in your mouth! I wish I was cured and pasted all the teeth! Muhammad did not have time to utter these words, went immediately out the law on free treatment and prosthetics for social foreigners, and his mouth began to shine snow-white Hollywood smile.

- I miss his four wives and fifteen kids as well as parents, brothers and sisters, parents, brothers and sisters of my wife!

I wish we all lived in a luxurious villa, and that was always a lot of money!

Muhammad did not have time to finish, as proved in a beautiful villa! On the table - the text of the law on family reunification for social foreigners, as well as bank statements with information about the benefits received.

The house is fully furnished and equipped with electrical appliances in accordance with the law for help in buying furniture and appliances for social foreigners.

Happy Mohammed does not know what he would even ask, because one desire is still left. And he asked:

- I want to be a real Dutchman. Not only by nationality. I want to be a blue-eyed blonde, and so I called Jan Jansen!

Before he could finish his sentence, as it was gone, and he found himself once again sitting on his haunches and spitting on the ground through a hole in the teeth.

- What happened? - He asked the fairies.

- Are not you ashamed, Mr. Jansen, begging the state! You have to take care of themselves! Go and look for a job!

How to Be a Good Egg and the Salt of the Earth

Now, the VOA Learning English program Words andTheir Stories.

We present more expressions about food. They are from Elenir Scardueli, a listener in Brazil.

My mother always told us “there is no use crying overspilled milk.” That means you should not get angrywhen something bad happens and cannot be changed.

People said my mother was “a good egg.” She wouldalways help anyone in need.

We never had to “walk on eggshells around her -- wedid not have to be careful about what we said or didbecause she never got angry at us.

She also told us “you have to break some eggs to makean omelet.” This means you have to do what isnecessary to move forward.

My mother believed you are what you eat” -- a gooddiet is important for good health. She would always giveus nutritious food. She liked serving us meat andpotatoes for dinner. “Meat and potatoes can also meanthe most important part of something. It describessomeone who likes simple things.

Here is another expression about meat: “one man’smeat is another man’s poison.” In other words, oneperson might like something very much while anotherperson might hate

 the same thing.

My father was also a good and honest person. Peoplesaid he was “the salt of the earth.” He would neverpour salt on a wound” -- or make someone feel worseabout something that was already a painful experience.

However, sometimes he told us a story that seemedbigger than life. So we had to “take it with a grain of salt” -- that is, we could not believe everything he told us.

My husband has a good job. He makes enough moneyto support our family. So we say “he brings home thebacon.”

He can cut the mustard” -- or do what is expected ofhim at work.

It is easy to find my husband in a crowd. He standsalmost two meters tall. He is “a tall drink of water.”

I take the train to work. It is not a pleasant ride becausethe train can be full of people. It is so crowded that we are “packed like sardines” -- just like small fish in a can.

My supervisor at work is sometimes “out to lunch.” She is out of touch and does not always know what is goingon in our office. Yet she is right about one thing: “thereis no such thing as a free lunch” -- something mayappear to be free of charge, but there may be a hiddencost.

When we fail to see problems at work, my supervisor tells us to “wake up andsmell the coffee” -- we need to pay more attention and fix the problem.

I once made a big mistake at the office and felt foolish. I had “egg on my face.”

Over the weekend, my friend invited me to watch afootball game on television. But I do not like football. It is “not my cup of tea.”

We hope this program has given you food for thought” -- that is, something to think about.

This program was written by Shelley Gollust. I’m Faith Lapidus.

Have you ever considered all the English expressionsthat include words about clothes? Let’s see if I canname a few off the cuff -- or without any preparation.
People wear pants to cover the lower part of theirbodies. We sometimes say that people who arerestless or nervous have ants in their pants.
They mightalso fly by the seat of their pants. They use their naturalsense to do something instead of their
learnedknowledge. Sometimes, people may get caught withtheir pants down.
They are found doing something theyshould not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control.Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do.
Then we say she wears thepants in the family.

Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spentquickly can burn a hole in your pocket. Sometimes you need a belt to hold
upyour pants. If you have less money than usual, you may have to tighten yourbelt.
You may have to live on less money and spend your money carefully. Butonce you have succeeded in budgeting your money, you will have that skillunder
 your belt.

I always praise people who can save their money and not spend too much. Ireally take my hat off to them. Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it at the drop of a hat -- immediately, without waiting. And sadly, you cannot pullmoney out of a hat. You cannot get money by inventing or imagining it.

Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for theirboots think they are
more important than they really are. I dislike such people. Ireally do. You can bet your boots on that. Yet, truly important people are hardto replace. Rarely can you fill their shoes
or replace them with someoneequally effective.
My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit andtie and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Some people who do notknow him well think he is too firm and severe. They think he is a real stuffedshirt. But I know that my father wears his heart on his sleeve. He shows hisfeelings openly. And, he knows how to keep his shirt on. He stays calm andnever gets angry or too excited.
Also, my father has never lost his shirt in a business deal. He is too smart tolose all or most of his money. This is because my father rolls up his sleevesand prepares to work hard. He often has a special plan or answer to aproblem that he can use if he needs it. He is like a person who does magictricks. We say he has a card up his sleeve.

English on the Forum.7 Lies You Believe About Nutrition

7 Lies You Believe About Nutrition

nutrition1

The world of nutrition is plagued with lies.

It’s full of misconceptions, misnomers, bad science and greedy companies trying to get their hand even further into your wallet.

So, it’s time to cut through the noise. I want to bring to light the 7 biggest lies you’ve been told about nutrition, with research backed evidence to show you the light.

If you’re ready to have your current beliefs rocked, come with me as I expose these 7 common lies:

1. ‘Saturated Fats Are Bad For Your Heart’

Your whole life you’ve been told that eating high fat foods was bad for your heart and your cholesterol.

That butters, creams, cheeses, steaks and all your favourite meats were slowly taking you towards an inevitable heart attack.

In fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The above study pieced together 21 studies of over 350,000 people of which 11,000 had heart disease, which covers a span of almost 14 years.

Their conclusion? There is no correlation between eating saturated fat and heart disease.

So, I suggest you go out and eat a butter-fried steak to celebrate.

2. ‘You Must Eat 5 Meals A Day To Lose Weight’

The old body-builders adage of ‘eat before you’re hungry, stop before you’re full’ has been the method behind the madness of personal trainers and dieticians for decades.

Probably, well, since Pumping Iron took the world by storm. Everyone wants abs like Arnold after all, right?

Well, studies show that eating meals more frequently isn’t shown to favourably change the body composition of sedentary people.

Put simply: unless you’re an athlete, or exercising intensely more than 6-8 hours week, you’re not going to lose moreweight doing following this method.

It’s more about what you put in your mouth, instead of when you eat it.

3.  ‘Carbohydrates Make You Fat’

You’ve all done it.

You’ve felt the bloated, guilty feeling after you’ve had a piece of toast with your breakfast. Or, when the breadbasket sits glaring you in the eye shouting ‘eat me, eat me!’at the top of soft white voice.

But, should you really feel bad and worry about the effect carbohydrates have on your waistline?

If you’re going to drown yourself in a pool of Maple Syrup, scoff down you bodyweight in pancakes or snack of Twix’s all day long – yeah, you’re probably going to make yourself fat.

But, if you’re making a conscious effort to eat whole grain, minimally processed, single ingredient carbohydrates, then you shouldn’t feel guilty.

Because, well, they’re naturally occurring foods. They grow and we eat them. Unlike, say, that Donut from Krispy Kreme.

As long as you’re smart about your carbs, they aren’t going to make you fat. And, they could be just the energy boost you need.

4. ‘Fruit Juice Is Healthy’

Have you ever had one of those fruit juices from a coffee store, or the front of a supermarket? The ones that boast over 30 fruits in them: half a cabbage and a small field of spinach?

And, most of these products do, as they say, contain this much fruit. But that doesn’t make them healthy.

Think about it this way: could you eat all the fruit if it was laid out in front of you?

Could you eat the 5 squeezed oranges it took to make your juice? Or the 2 bananas, apple, mango and peach that went into your smoothie?

Probably not.

But when it comes to drinking them, your body reacts differently. Because, well, it doesn’t have to chew anything. It just receives the food in one big lump sum and has to deal with the consequences.

The problem isn’t the fruit itself, but the fructose (sugars) within it.

Research by the University of California shows that increased consumption of fructose can increase your body fat, and have a tonne of negative effects on your body.

To reach this level of fructose would require a lot of fruit. But, the fruit juices you drink can take you an awful lot closer to the negative health consequences.

Stick to: Water, Black Coffee or Flavoured Tea’s.

5.  ‘Low Fat Foods Are Really Healthy’

We’ve already established in this article that eating saturated fats isn’t bad for your heart.

What about ‘low fat’ foods then? They just removed the bad fats, right?

In the words of English Nutritionist, Ben Coomber, when you hear ‘Low Fat, think ‘Chemical Sh*t Storm’.

Because, well, when they remove the ‘fat’ (or the sugar in some cases) they fill the product full of chemicals. Most of these are harmful to the body, with the biggest culprit being aspartame.

For both your waistline and your health, choose the full-fat option.

6.  ‘Counting Calories Is Extremely Important’

Every calorie count you’ve ever done has been wrong.

That’s right. All those day’s you’ve spent totting up your calories, reading labels and focusing on hitting your magic number were all spent in vain.

Because, counting calories is the equivalent of counting all the skittles in the packet. It does little other than tell you how many you’ve eaten.

I can already hear people crying, ‘but what if I want to know how many I’ve eaten?’ And, if that’s your prerogative, feel free to do so.

But at the end of the day, your calorie counts mean nothing because not all calories were created equal.

500 Calories of Steak is far better for you than 500 calories of Chocolate Bars.

One is a healthy nutritious meal, filled with essential minerals, vitamins and fats. The other is a chocolate bar.

7. ‘Vegetable and Seed Oils Are Healthy’

It’s safe to say that anything refined or highly processed is unhealthy. And, the same can be said for all your seed oils, vegetable oils and margarines you’ve been cooking with.

They’re sold to you as a way to lower your risk of heart disease and be an all-round healthier option to full fat cooking oils and butters.

When in fact, they can actually cause all the problems they’re supposed to solve.

Studies show that the risk of heart disease and increase inflammation in your body, due to the high level of polyunsaturated fats, such as omega-6.

Stick to the high fat, ‘unhealthy’ alternatives, to positively affect and improve your health.

The Conclusion? Do Your Own Research

Don’t just believe the health claims of the ‘professional’ on the television, or the early-morning adverts that are looking for you to go out and buy a product.

If you’re planning on cutting a food out of your diet completely, do a quick Google Pages search and see if there is actually any research to back up their claims.

Because, you’ll usually find that there isn’t.

255.A present for the anniversary

A present for the anniversary

A middle-aged Jewish guy is out to dinner with his wife to celebrate her fortieth birthday.
He says, "So what would you like, Julie? A Jaguar? A sable coat? A diamond necklace?"
She says, "Bernie, I want a divorce."
He says, "I wasn't planning on spending that much."

Shelter for birds

Parable of unknown origin

One little bird every day found himself hiding in the branches of a dry tree that stood in the middle of a vast desert wilderness. But once blew a hurricane and tore the tree roots.

In search of a new shelter had a poor bird to fly hundreds of miles until it finally did not reach to the garden, where the murmuring water, fragrant flowers and trees were covered with ripe fruit.

But if it survived the dry tree, no force would not leave the bird made his home place.

Five real life super humans who were blessed with great powers

Wim Hof

You must have seen superhuman movies where an ordinary person has the ability to fly up in the air, runs faster than sports cars or has an extraordinary strength. We all wish to have the same powers at a certain point of time since believe we can a handle our life really well that way. However, do you know that there are people who actually are born with such super powers? In addition, there are a few others have conceivably achieved such strengths after a long-time training or meditation.

Ben Underwood

 Ben Underwood

Ben’s both eyes were removed due to a retinal cancer, but he surprised everyone when he taught himself echolocation at the age of five only. His ability to detect the location of objects around him made him accomplish the difficult tasks like running, playing football, riding bycycle, playing basketball, roller-skating and skateboarding. The fact is that a normal kid takes a long time to learn such skills but Ben really was an exception. Ben died at the age of 16; the same retinal cancer took his life. (Source)

Rudiger Gamm

 Rudiger Gamm

Rudiger is someone who developed ability to mentally evaluate large arithmetic expressions at the age of five. Each one of us has tried speaking backward for fun, but Ridiger is someone who can speak backwards and calculate calendars too. (Source Image)

Shakuntala Devi

 Shakuntala Devi_1

The modern era is based on the computer technology. However, how would you react if your brain starts working like a computer itself? Shakuntala Devi was known as the Human Computer. Mathematical calculations that would take a very long time for an average person used to amuse her. Her talent got her a place in 1982 edition of The Guinness Book of World Records. Her ability gave her a chance to visit Europe, New York City and US demonstrating her talent. Shakuntala Devi wrote many non-fiction textbooks about mathematics, puzzles and astrology too. Her ability would seriously have been an advantage for her in her mathematics exam, getting her good grades.(Source | Image)

Wim Hof

 Wim Hof_1

This Dutch daredevil is known as the iceman since he has the ability to survive extreme cold without taking a sigh. Hof believes that it is not magic. Through his meditation techniques, he has developed strength to influence his Autonomic Nervous System and Immune System, which makes him able to pull off such stunts. This ability of Hof has helped him in earning twenty records that include a world record of longest ice bath. In 2008, he made a Guinness World Record by staying immersed in ice for 1 hour, 13 minutes and 48 seconds and broke his own previous record. He reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and that too in his shorts in 2009. (Source)

Thai Ngoc

 Thai Ngoc

If you do not take proper sleep even for a single day, you get restless and are probably not able to focus. However, have you ever heard of someone who goes for days without taking sleep and what if the person goes without sleep for years? Thai Ngoc, after battling against fever developed an ability to go without sleep and claims that he has not slept for last 41 years. Thai survived these all years without a sign of physical or mental illness due to lack of sleep. (Source)

We Put Things in "Apple Pie Order"

Now, the VOA Special English program Words andTheir Stories.

Today we tell about the expression apple pie order.” Itmeans “in perfect order, very well organized.”

Nobody is sure where and when the expression applepie order began.

Some say that Scottish and Englishwriters used the expression a long time ago.

Otherssay it first was used in the northeastern Americanstates known as New England. The housewives of NewEngland cut their apples in even slices. Then they

filledpie pans with them in an organized way, row upon row. As one writer said, the women of New England loved tohave everything in its place. This perhaps explains whyit generally is believed that the expression apple pieorder began in New England.

Another old expression describes the oppositecondition -- wild disorder. That expression is apple ofdiscord. It comes from ancient mythology. The mythsays that all the gods and goddesses were sittingaround the table

to celebrate the marriage of Thetis andPeleus. One of the goddesses -- Discord -- was atroublemaker. She threw a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess.

It was not an easy decision to make. How could theychoose among Juno, Minerva

and Venus. Paris wasgiven the task of deciding. He decided to give the golden apple to Venus. Junoand Minerva were very

angry and threatened him. This, the myth says, beganthe long Trojan war.

At one time, the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. This is how the mistake happened:

In the sixteenth century, Spain imported the tomatofrom South America after

Spanish explorers had landedthere. Spain then exported the tomato to Morocco.

Italian traders carried it on to Italy. The Italian name for the tomato was “pomo di Moro” -- apple of the Moors.

When French growers imported it from Italy, theythought di Moro meant “d’amour” -- the French wordfor love. And so pomo di Moro became the apple oflove.

People believe many things about the apple. One beliefis that it has great powers of keeping people healthy. Avery common expression is “an apple a day keeps thedoctor away.”

Another belief is based on fact. The expression is “onerotten apple spoils the barrel.” When an apple begins to go bad, it ruins all the other apples around it in thecontainer. The expression has come to mean that onebad person in a group can cause everyone to act bad.

The Republican Party is preparing to control bothhouses of the United States Congress in January.Republican candidates won big victories in the recentU.S. congressional elections. The Democratic Partylost its majority in the Senate. The Democrats mustnow adjust to being the minority party in bothhouses.

Both parties have begun looking ahead to the nextnational elections, in 2016. At that time, Americans willelect a new Congress -- and a new president.

Whit Ayres works as a strategist for the RepublicanParty. He says Republican victories in Congress mayprepare the party for winning back the presidency twoyears from now. He said the party had bettercandidates.

“And we had candidates who could unite theRepublican coalition and, of course, that is what it isgoing to take in 2016.”

Many well-known Republicans could decide to seek the party’s presidentialnomination. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is often mentioned as apossible nominee. So are New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and TexasSenator Ted Cruz.

But Mr. Ayres says nobody is a clear choice to be the Republican nominee.

Whoever wins it will demonstrate an ability to join Tea Party, Libertarian, establishment, social conservative and internationalist Republicans all in onecoalition and get enough each of those groups to build a majority.”

For the Democrats, preparation for the 2016 elections offers a differentchallenge.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the clear leader for the Democraticpresidential nomination  if she wants it. But Democratic strategist CelindaLake says the party needs to find a winning economic message.

“I think a lot of people are now concluding, rightly or wrongly, that while(President Barack) Obama was change, that he didn’t have as muchexperience as we needed to actually get things done. Nobody questionsSecretary Clinton’s qualifications and experience.”

Political observers say that for Hillary Clinton to succeed, she must show that she differs with President Barack Obama on some issues. The recentelection results showed him to be unpopular among voters.

GAIA

Is our planet alive? Some who call our earth “Gaia” seem to think so. After all, something keeps the earth habitable for us. British chemistJames Lovelock gave a lot of thought to the idea of “a single giant living system … with the capacity to keep the Earth always at a state most favorable for the life upon it.” Wondering what to call that idea, Lovelock turned to novelist William Golding, who lived in the same English village. Golding suggested “Gaia,” the ancient Greek name for the goddess of the earth.

In the 1970s, Lovelock and the late American biologist Lynn Margulisdeveloped the “Gaia hypothesis.” According to them, Gaia is a term for the interactions of all living things on earth with their non-living surroundings. Together, these interactions form a self-regulating system that makes life possible. For example, Gaia is what keeps the temperature of our atmosphere, the salt in our oceans, and the oxygen levels in the air stable, making it optimal for life to continue. But the Gaia hypothesis is controversial.

Critics worry that some might consider Gaia to be an actual livingorganism. And as the name “Gaia” became popular, some took it to mean that the earth is a sort of mother goddess. Neither idea was what Lovelock and Margulis had in mind. For one thing, unlike other organisms, Gaia doesn’t have parents or produce offspring. And unlike a deity, Gaia doesn’t make plans for life on earth. Although Gaia keeps the earth in a state that makes life possible, it doesn’t think about it at all. And to make matters a bit scarier, Gaia doesn’t care about us humans.

In this age of drastic climate change, this gives us something to worry about. Doubtless we humans are causing great damage to the environment. But can we really destroy those interactions called Gaia? Margulis didn’t think we were nearly that powerful, and she didn’t put it politely. “Gaia is a tough bitch,” she used to say. But this doesn’t mean that we’re free to pollute the environment and wipe out species and get away with it. If we do, Gaia will eventually fix the earth by getting rid of us to make room for other forms of life. As Margulis said, the result will be “a world devoid of people.”

So whether Gaia is real or not, isn’t the point. Ultimately, Gaia is ametaphor, giving us new ways to think about ourselves and our planet. And hopefully through the Gaia hypothesis, we can gain insight into important issues like climate change and environmental destruction.

Malaria control efforts depend mainly on things likechemically-treated mosquito nets and sprays designedto kill the disease-carrying insects. But scientists inKenya say another method -- a vaccine -- will beavailable next year. Researchers are already testing thevaccine on volunteers. If tests are successful, thetreatment could add an important new weapon in effortsto control and possibly stop the disease.

Malaria kills more than 500,000 people a yearworldwide. The disease sickens millions more everyyear. Many of those who die or become sick arechildren living in African countries south of the SaharaDesert.

Kisumu is the third-largest city in Kenya. One-third of allpatients in and near the city suffer from malaria.

Existing malaria control efforts have helped to reducethe number of infections over the past ten years. Butthere has never been a vaccine to protect peopleagainst the disease.

Scientists in Kisumu have created a vaccine that theyare now testing on people. They worked with the Britishdrug company GlaxoSmithKline and others to developthe vaccine. Scientists say vaccinating people --especially young children -- is necessary if the diseaseis to be stopped.

Dr. Martina Oneko is a pediatrician -- a doctor whocares for babies and children. She helped to carry out astudy on the effectiveness of a malaria vaccine, in ruralwestern Kenya.

“We saw a very good success of the vaccine resultingin health improvements in these childrenThey werejust not as sick as their counterparts in the communitywho were not vaccinated. The overall vaccine efficacyin the older age group for all the sites was 47 percentand in the younger age group it was 27 percent.”

The vaccine stops the malaria parasite from infecting -- and reproducing in -- the liver. After a mosquito carrying the malaria parasite bites its victim, infected blood from the liver enters the body and infects other red blood cells. This process causes malaria.

Malaria researchers say the vaccine may not stop the spread of malaria byitself. But

BBC News.Magazine. The lion-killer who became an Israeli hero

30 November 2014

The lion-killer who became an Israeli hero

JH Patterson with one of the Tsavo lions

The ashes of a swashbuckling hero of the British Empire are to be reburied in Israel after a service attended by the country's prime minister. John Henry Patterson was a soldier, big-game hunter and writer, whose exploits inspired three Hollywood movies. The BBC's Kevin Connolly explains why he is so admired in Israel.

The man who was to become a hero to the British and to the Israelis was neither British nor Jewish. Like many servants of the crown in the days of Empire he was an Irishman born in County Longford in 1867 to a Protestant father and Catholic mother. Ireland was then part of the United Kingdom and military service was a popular option for many young Irishmen - partly from a want of other opportunities and partly from a sense of adventure.

In Patterson's case we can assume it was the sense of adventure. By 1898 he'd been commissioned to oversee the construction of a railway bridge over a ravine at Tsavo, in Kenya, but found work was being held up by two man-eating lions who were terrorising the huge camps housing the Indian and African labourers.

Lieutenant Colonel J H Patterson, Q 80054 IWM

It's hard to be sure, but the two lions between them may have killed more than 100 people in all. Patterson wasn't an expert on lions, although he'd shot tigers on military service in India, but to protect his workers and get his bridge finished he resolved to kill the predators.

Man-eating behaviour isn't common among lions - it's possible that the two killers at Tsavo had got the taste for human flesh from the careless disposal of human remains over the years. Over a three-week period Patterson killed both the predators. His workers, who'd been growing fractious, presented him with an inscribed drinking cup to salute his extraordinary nerve. It remained one of his most treasured possessions. Patterson told the whole story in his best-selling book, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo.

The book has inspired no fewer than three Hollywood movies - Bwana Devil (1952), the Killers of Kilimanjaro (1959) and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996). The American hunter Remington, played by Michael Douglas, who appears in The Ghost and The Darkness is a pure invention - in real-life our Irish hero did it all himself. The lions to some extent are the stars of the story and they were exceptional creatures. These animals measured 9ft (2.7m) from the nose to the tip of the tail, and after they'd been shot each of them required a team of eight men to carry them back to the camp. The stuffed carcases are in the Field Museum in Chicago but the taxidermist's art has apparently somewhat diminished their impact... according to legend the original skins had been used as rugs and so when it was decided to stuff and mount them they came out slightly smaller than they had originally been.

The Tsavo lions in Chicago's Field MuseumMale Tsavo lions don't have manes - an evolutionary quirk attributed to the fierce heat in the region

Nothing ordinary ever seemed to happen to Patterson. Bwana Devil is generally cited as the first full-colour 3-D movie made in English and so is a Hollywood milestone in itself. When you see those old black and white photographs of movie audiences thrilling to the 3-D experience in their cardboard spectacles with blue and red plastic lenses, there's a good chance they're watching Patterson in action. The film also deserves to be remembered for a slogan designed to reassure audiences that the coming of startling 3-D realism didn't mean the end of old-fashioned romance. "Bwana Devil!", it said. "A Lion in Your Lap; A Lover in Your Arms!"

Having your life turned into a Hollywood movie isn't always a positive experience. A few years after the events at Tsavo, Patterson was involved in a scandal that made him the talk of big-game hunting high society in Africa. On safari a fellow British soldier, Audley Blyth, died of gunshot wounds in his tent, as ugly rumours swirled that Patterson had been rather too close to Mrs Blyth, who was also a part of the expedition. At one point it's believed that Patterson threatened to sue Winston Churchill for slander as the incident became the talk of fashionable London dinner tables. Ernest Hemingway was intrigued enough to fictionalise the story in The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber - and true to form it was eventually turned in to yet another movie, The Macomber Affair (1947).

Big-game hunting is no longer fashionable, of course, but it's worth remembering that hunters tended to see themselves not as despoilers of the natural environment of Africa but as experts in it. Patterson shot an eland in 1906 and had the head mounted. He thought it had some unusual characteristics and when it was eventually seen by a member of faculty at the British Museum in London it turned out to be a sort of unique sub-species that to this day bears Patterson's name, Taurotragus Oryx Pattersonianius.

There was nothing honorary about Lt Col Patterson's military rank. He served with distinction in a British cavalry regiment during the Boer War in South Africa, winning the Distinguished Service Order, and when he was recalled to the colours during World War One he was almost 50 years old.

Troops of the Zion Mule Corps in Palestine, WW1

It was during the Middle East campaign that he found himself in command of the Zion Mule Corps, a group of Jewish volunteers eager to serve the international cause and to advance their own cause of creating a Jewish state at the same time. Patterson became a passionate supporter of Zionism and the ranks of the detachment he commanded included influential heroes of the cause, including Ze'ev Jabotinsky and Joseph Trumpeldor.

Patterson took his Jewish volunteers to war around the dangerous beaches of Gallipoli in what history remembers as a doomed British effort to attack the German Empire through the territory of its ally, the Turkish Empire. It's often said that Patterson thus became the first commander to lead Jewish forces on to the field of battle for two millennia making him an important figure in the history of Zionism.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told me that his older brother, Yonathan, was named in honour of John Henry Patterson, who had come to know their father when he lived in New York campaigning for the Zionist cause in the mid-1940s.

Benjamin Netanyahu speaks to Kevin Connolly about John Henry Patterson

The family still has an engraved goblet given to Yonathan by Patterson to celebrate his birth. Yonathan went on to become an Israeli national hero who died leading the extraordinary raid on Entebbe in Uganda in 1976 in which commandos from Israel's special forces rescued hostages who were being held at an airport by members of the German Baader-Meinhof gang and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Prime Minister Netanyahu told us he regarded Patterson as godfather to the Israeli Army as well as the godfather to his brother and says it's right that Israel should honour him. He's expected to attend the burial of Patterson's ashes on Thursday.

 Interesting statistics about the US
04/13/2014 19:32

Total US - about 303 million. Po ethnic composition they are divided in this way.
38 million - African Americans.
Asian Americans - about 12 million of them
3 million- Chinese
3500000 - Arabs.
Hispanic (Hispanics) - about 42 million.
The rest - about 200 million - are white.
If you still have everything in line with our ideas, the more many of us expect surprises.
Namely
The biggest European group - the descendants of Germans and Germans.
Them in the United States about 48 million.
In second place the Irish - 44 million.
It was only the third - the Anglo-Americans, including about 37 million, including 5 million Scots, as well as people from Northern Ireland, Wales, etc.
And of them actually British, t. E. The Anglo-Saxons, only 24.5 million people, slightly more than 8% of the population!
It is understandable why I write "only" - it is this ethnic group has been more than 200 years old train keeps all the leading positions in the melting pot, it belongs to the fullness of power in politics, business, in all significant aspects of society.

The mysterious disappearance of a celebrity preacher

By Naomi GrimleyBBC News

Aimee Semple McPherson

Aimee Semple McPherson was one of the most glamorous women in the US in the 1920s. The evangelical preacher put on theatrical church services and used ground-breaking radio broadcasts to teach the gospel - but one mysterious episode in her life has never been fully explained.

On 18 May 1926, Aimee Semple McPherson went to Venice Beach, Los Angeles, to take a swim and write a sermon.

The female assistant who'd gone with her had to leave to make a short phone call from a nearby hotel. When she returned she couldn't see the evangelist anywhere.

As evening fell, McPherson was still missing and her followers rushed to the beach to join the search. One young man drowned as he swam out towards two dead seals which he'd mistaken for her body.

"A local newspaper even speculated that there had been a sea monster sighted off Venice Beach," says McPherson's biographer, Matthew Sutton. "They thought maybe this sea monster had swallowed McPherson whole."

Others thought that the evangelist would be miraculously resurrected. For five weeks, national newspapers carried rival theories about what had happened to McPherson.
