A Christmas at the Box Office

Понедельник, 26 Декабря 2022 г. 20:17 + в цитатник

#Avatar came in above projections at the box office, adding $90 million through the four-day Christmas weekend. Disney and 20th Century initially projected the sequel would make $82 million through the four-day frame. https://t.co/IF3mHxzZ9M

— Variety (@Variety) December 26, 2022

Despite the sub-zero temperatures, high winds, and tons of snow covering most of the country, this Christmas 4-day weekend turned out a little better than anticipated for some, but not all.

Avatar: The Way of Water, spend its 2nd weekend on top, grossing a 4-day weekend of $90 million. Its Christmas Day total of $29.5 million was $8 million higher than projected. Rival studios think its final 4-day total could even get as high as $100 million. Its domestic total now currently stands at $287 million, worldwide at $888 million.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, also came in with a higher than estimated $20 million 4-day and has grossed $27 million since its release last Wednesday. The critically acclaimed film is aso a hit with audiences, receiving an A Cinemascore and an 89% from PostTrak.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody debuted in 3rd with a $6.8 million 4-day. A major disappoint as Sony though it could get a $12 million debut. This, too, received an A Cinemascore and a 88% from PostTrak.

Babylon debuted in 4th with a disastrous $5.3 million 4-day. The film recevied a C+ Cinemascore and a 74% from PostTrak.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever rounded out the Top 5 with $4.7 million.

The Whale expanded to 603 theaters and took in $1.3 million. Its domestic gross now sits at $2.85 million.

In indie debuts: Women Talking grossed a very poor $41,000 from 8 theaters, Living in 3 theaters grossed an even worse $22,700, and Corsage was in 2 theaters with $32,000.

Kate Hudson shares her opinion on nepo babies

Понедельник, 26 Декабря 2022 г. 18:46 + в цитатник

Kate Hudson Says She Sees Nepotism in Other Industries “Way More Than I See It in Hollywood” https://t.co/Q5kzmGyCXh

— The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) December 25, 2022

Hudson who was also named in the nepo babies article decided to share her opinion on it as well.

She says she knows that nepotism is real but that it doesn't matter if you work hard and happens "way more" in other industries outside of Hollywood.

“I look at my kids and we’re a storytelling family,” she says. “It’s definitely in our blood. People can call it whatever they want, but it’s not going to change it.”

Hudson's parents are actors Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (who themselves come from performer parents), her siblings also have a carreer in Hollywood: Wyatt Russell and Oliver Hudson; and has publicly supported her eldest son Ryder with his music ambitions.

She noted that nepotism is not just something that exists in Hollywood and pointed to other industries where she’s witnessed nepo-baby advantages in action, something the magazine feature captures with looks into nepotism’s presence in everything from the publishing and art worlds to sports and fashion.

“I actually think there are other industries where it’s [more common]. Maybe modeling?” she said. “I see it in business way more than I see it in Hollywood. Sometimes I’ve been in business meetings where I’m like, wait, whose child is this? Like, this person knows nothing!”
“I don’t care where you come from, or what your relationship to the business is,” she explained. “If you work hard and you kill it, it doesn’t matter.”

Akon defends parenting in absentia: "Attending kids' recitals is a white man's thing"

Понедельник, 26 Декабря 2022 г. 18:46 + в цитатник

Proud father of nine, Akon, supports Nick Cannon's decision to spawn a dozen children: "100%, I agree with him 1000%. That’s how life is supposed to be. Why not? He’s rich, he’s responsible. Nick is there for every single one of those kids."

The interviewer rebuked, "There is no way you can have 12 kids…" but Akon insisted, "I’ve got nine and I’m there for every one of mine."

When asked if he attends his children's recitals: "No, that’s a white man’s thing. Who gives a f**k about a recital? My job isn’t to be doing all that extra stuff, all these holidays and recitals and all that. While I’m taking care of my responsibilities to make sure that my family have a roof over their head and food, if I have the time to show love, yes I will do that. But my responsibility is to make sure they grow up responsible, strong, and become an input to society."

He continued, “You can’t expect a man to conquer the world if he’s there with his children.” He rejected a suggestion to have fewer children, so they could join his travels around the world: “Why would you wanna take children all around the world with a man? That’s so womanistic. What man do you know is gonna run around with his children? You know how weak that looks? Who does that?”

“Communication allows me to be there every day. That’s what FaceTime and phone is for."

The host argued it’s ‘not the same’, but Akon insisted it is: ‘The reason why people like me can’t spend every day and minute with their children is because the mother’s job is to be there with the children. I am the man, my job is to provide comfort so the mother can provide and raise those children to be like me. If it’s a man, when the child is a certain age as a man that’s my responsibility to show him what a man’s role and responsibility is."

Phoebe Bridgers gave her top tips for getting over a “heartbreak” amid speculation that she and Paul Mescal split after two years together.

“You just have to do it,” the 28-year-old told Amelia Dimoldenberg on an episode of her “Chicken Shop Date” YouTube series. “And it’s gonna end at some point but you can’t make it end, that’s my tip.”

When asked what heartbreak has “taught” her, the singer replied, “I think if I had figured that out, I wouldn’t be making music still.”

The Class Divide in the Arts: An Exhibition takes a Closer Look

Воскресенье, 25 Декабря 2022 г. 22:12 + в цитатник
Within the field of art, living artists meet rich collectors that sometimes become sponsors, and artists with educated, upper middle class backgrounds mingle with artists from working-class families. At the same time, individual backgrounds are rarely discussed, since it is seemingly at first glance only the quality of the art that should count. However, the fact remains that who has access to funding, who inherits, or who has attained cultural capital decidedly affects the conditions under which one works and how or whether someone becomes visible. The Berlinsche Galerie in Berlin is one of my favorite museums in Europe, and their newest exhibition “Class Issues: Art Production In and Out of Precarity” takes a closer look at how social and financial inequality affect how art gets made, sold and displayed.

"Class Issues" looks at how class affects how art is made, valued, shown, and artists' access to funding but also how history has shaped German concepts of class. At the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin thru 9 Jan. https://t.co/laTUWyL9I1

— Diane Shugart (@dianalizia) December 5, 2022

The exhibition illuminates how strongly artistic practice can be influenced by the consequences of these forms of discrimination. How can one make art when the means of production are limited or non-existent, when there is no space available, and the idea of being able to afford a studio is presumptuous or simply absurd? What of artists who have conceived of a work that can never be realized due to scarce resources? Self-doubt and self-manipulative strategies are two modes of behavior that exemplify the negative impact experiences of discrimination can have on mental health: people often attribute failure to their own personal shortcomings rather than finding responsibility within the exclusionary structures of the art system ripe for critique.

“Fanta Dress,” left, and “The Mouth of Truth” by Gabriele St"otzer. Her works are made of recycled consumer packaging, and is a response to the transition from communism to capitalism in the former East Germany.

Many of the artworks, both contemporary and historical, are about financial and social inequality. Some of the exhibits are humorous while others are more heart-wrenching; lining the wall at the entrance is a series of anonymized letters from artists aged over 60, requesting financial aid from a professional association during the coronavirus pandemic. In a nearby corner are hand-drawn charts from a survey of Berlin artists by a French collective that found respondents’ median annual income was 15,000 euros, around $15,800, with roughly half of these artists more than 15 years into their careers. Works in the exhibition also direct viewers’ attention to the systems through which artists earn money, like grants. In the main gallery, an acrylic-painted flag by Vlad Brateanu proclaiming “An Artist Who Cannot Get Funding Is No Artist” hangs from the ceiling. The exhibition concept also deliberately includes the wall labels, providing information about the actual production costs of some of the works, the artist’s parents’ occupation, applications for funding, or the number of jobs the artist had to take on in order to support themselves.

“An Artist Who Cannot Get Funding Is No Artist” by Vlad Brateanu.

A good point to make is that a similar exhibition in the United States would look quite different because race and class are often intertwined. Miki Garcia, the director of the Arizona State University Art Museum agrees. “The idea that one would bring class in without talking about race, for us, would be really dangerous,” she said. “In the United States, class and race get pitted against each other often, and so it would read very differently than in other parts of the world.” There’s also a nasty tendency on behalf of galleries and grant committees to only accept the POC artists whose works deal with racial topics while ignoring the ones whose works are more general in nature (a type of pigeonholing their White contempories often don’t get).

As an artist, you move within a system that is built on inequalities. However, one can criticize it while profiting from it all the same. While a lot of museums are making headway into eliminating social bias, it has to be asked how many artists right now being acquired by museums have gallery representation, or come out of an M.F.A. network, versus those that don’t? That is a class conversation because not everyone has the resources to go to grad school, or be connected thru networks like The Studio Museum of Harlem or MoMa. Location also matters; a quick look at the past few Whitney Biennials show that the bulk of artists represented are either from the New York area, graduated from a school with a good MFA program, or have connections thru artist-in-residence programs at smaller museums. So where does that leave self taught artists who don’t have the connections and resources as others? These are questions that this exhibition attempts to answer, and I think they did a good job.

Do you agree with the points being made here, Art ONTD? Is grant writing season kicking your ass? Do people have a mad tendency to pigeonhole your work? Also, how important are connections? Discuss.

The HOT AF cast of "Emily in Paris" interview roundup

Воскресенье, 25 Декабря 2022 г. 22:01 + в цитатник

Before they played the on-again, off-again couple Gabriel and Camille on the Netflix show 'Emily in Paris,' Lucas Bravo and Camille Razat acted alongside each other in the French film 'Caprice'—as brother and sister. Clearly, their on-screen work has bonded them for life, as they proved their friendship in a game of 'How Well Do You Know Your Co-Star?'
-Lucas loves napping

On the set of Emily in Paris, Ashley Park (Mindy) and Lucien Laviscount (Alfie) interview each other in Ashley's makeup trailer, covering everything from fashion and music to who's most likely to fall out of a tree.

The ‘Emily in Paris’ cast play a round of Rolling Stone’s ‘What Would You Do’ ahead of the season 3 release.

Coucou! “Emily in Paris” season 3 just dropped on Netflix and since we’re obsessed with the cast (Lily Collins, Lucas Bravo, Ashley Park, Camille Razat, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, William Abadie, Lucien Laviscount, Kate Walsh), we sat down with them to play a lively game of Who’s Who! They revealed who’s always making everyone crack up in the middle of a take, who’s throwing parties after work, and who’s the worst at keeping a secret (spoiler: the girls were NOT happy with who the boys chose for that one). Watch the video above to hear all the BTS from this tight-knit group!

Emily in Paris Season 3 stars Lily Collins and Lucien Laviscount describe dating in their teen years versus their 20s. PLUS Ashley Park tells us the difference between mean girls in real life versus female friendships on the show.

Star, the creator of popular Netflix series, and Bravo, who plays chef Gabriel, talk about the upcoming season 3 premiere.

A woman allegedly tried to take all the presents around Robert De Niro's Christmas tree

A woman allegedly broke into Robert De Niro's New York City townhouse and tried to take all the presents around his Christmas tree while he was home, police say. https://t.co/OJ1uJJBNUa

— NBC News (@NBCNews) December 25, 2022

Yes, you read that right.

A woman broke into Robert De Niro's New York City townhouse Monday and tried to take the presents around his Christmas tree while he was home, police said.
At 2:45 a.m., officers saw the 30-year-old woman known to police "for numerous burglary arrests," enter the basement of the Oscar-winning actor's Upper East Side residence.

Officers saw her trying to take the presents around his tree. That’s when the officials said De Niro came downstairs in a bathrobe.

Even though she was caught in the home, the woman denied being there. "I didn't go to Robert De Niro's house," she could be heard saying in the video.
