- Nazarin is a dual citizen who was detained in 2016 as part of a long running dispute between Britain and Iran. She was finally released in 2022, a year after her initial expected date of release, due to a second set of charges. She was released immediately after Britain repaid the outstanding debt of lb393.8 million to Iran
- In the conversation she talks to Andy about how the Wimbledon match he won was the first television she was allowed to watch in solitary confinement and the joy it brought her. She assumed they thought it was giving her something but not much to let her watch, but she is a huge fan
- They talk about how sport has the ability to pull people out of grief and anger. Murray talks about how tennis's role has seen men and women compete on the same stage for big titles, which he thinks should be celebrated instead of the questions about prize money being a conflict
- Murray asks her about how she feels about what happened to her, he is audibly emotional when asking her how she's when he would have been angry if he or someone he loved was in that position. Nazarin comments that she put the anger away otherwise it would eat her up.
- Nazarin's child was 2 when she was detained, she was 8 when she was released and she says her child was a different person when she was released than when she was when she left her.
- "I don't know how I survived, I know there are many things that helped me through this journey."

Netflix‘s Alice In Borderland season 2 has become the platform’s most-watched Japanese show ever in just four days following its premiere.

The second season of the hit manga adaptation premiered on Netflix on December 22 and quickly set a new record as the most-watched Japanese series ever on Netflix in just four days – a record that includes both live-action and anime series on the platform. Season 2 garnered 61.2 million viewing hours over its premiere weekend on the week of December 19 to 25, shooting it to the top of the Global Non-English TV list and in the list of the Top 10 Series in 90 countries including Japan, US, Canada, Brazil, France and Hong Kong.

The first season of the series also received a boost from newfound fans and fans looking to refresh their memory, returning to the number 2 spot on Global Non-English TV Top 10 lit and the Top 10 Series list in 31 countries, leading to both seasons racking up 80 million viewing hours on season 2’s premiere weekend.

The new record tops out Squid Game’s 63 million viewing hours in its first week in Global Top 10 list, though Squid Game reigned at Number One in the category of non-English television for several months after its release week in September 2021.

Alice in Borderland centres around a group of friends who are transported to a parallel dimension called the Borderlands. To get out alive, they must compete in a series of deadly games that puts their friendships to the test. Directed by Shinsuke Sato and starring Nijiro Murakami, Ayaka Miyoshi, Dori Sakurada, Aya Asahina and Yutaro Watanabe, the protagonists delve further into the mystery of the face card holders in the latest season as they look to escape a dystopian Tokyo.

According to Courtney Love, she was officially cast in the role of Marla in Fight Club opposite then-boyfriend Edward Norton. Around that time she got a call from director Gus Van Sant and Norton's costar Brad Pitt, who wanted to do a movie about Kurt Cobain (NOT Last Days, Van Sant’s 2005 film loosely based on Cobain).

Love said she “went nuclear” on the two, a decision she now regrets. As a result, Fight Club director David Fincher fired her because “I wouldn’t let Brad play Kurt.”

She added that as recently as 2020 she reconnected with Pitt because his Plan B production company wanted to produce a Cobain biopic, which she also rejected. “I don’t know if I trust you and I don’t know that your movies are for profit,” she told him. “If you don’t get me, you kinda don’t Kurt, and I don’t feel like you do, Brad.”

She added, “My friend Cameron Crowe [told me] Brad Pitt was put on this earth to stalk you for Kurt, which has been going on since ’96.”

Love also said that during the same call with Gus Van Sant, he and Pitt were talking about doing Brokeback Mountain back when the script was more “X-rated.”

Van Sant apparently told Love while Pitt wasn’t around that Pitt was guarded about his sexuality. “You know how he is about his sexuality,” Van Sant told Love.

Pete Davidson and Emily Ratajkowski have apparently ended their very, very brief relationship. The two were first linked in November and both attended a Knicks game during Thanksgiving weekend.

A source told PageSix: “Their fling has moved into the friends zone,” adding, that that’s “fine with both of them.”

This was such a good year for animation. Last year it truly boiled down to "Encanto vs. Mitchells", but the field is wide open, so let's run it down with the help of Vareity!


With Disney/Pixar, we have Turning Red, a critical darling. Not commercial, because Disney didn't give it a wide release....and Lightyear and Strange World, both of which did receive wide releases, flopped, and are non-entities in this race. Turning Red, which marks the first from Pixar to be solely directed by a woman, has received critical acclaim for Shi’s depictions of female friendships and the mother-daughter relationship.

OP Note: TR is still probably my favorite film of the year.

Netflix has quite a lot, including The Sea Beast, their most successful animated film to date. There's also My Father's Dragon, the latest from Cartoon Saloon, which hit the platform with a mild splash. Of course, there's Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which is almost guaranteed to place in the nominations.

The article does not, however, mention Henry Selick's Wendell and Wild.

OP Note: Sea Beast was fine enough, and GDT's Pinocchio was really cool. Nice to see a multitude of stop motion available, sad W&W isn't getting more attention.

GKIDS missed a nomination last year with Belle (tip: the soundtrack is amazing), but with Inu-Oh already being nominated for a Golden Globe, maybe they can take it all the way (and give us a US release, y/y?).

Did you, like most people, forget Dreamworks Animation had not one, but two films this year? The Bad Guys had a fairly slow rollout worldwide with it's soft, almost Spider-verse-esque style for a bunch of criminals. It sadly seems to have sunk out of the public conciousness. Meanwhile, the sixth entry into the Shrek franchise, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, may be 11 years too late, but it was worth the wait, with very positive reviews, and a bombastic artstyle and story that stops just short of saying memento mori.

OP Note: Ok, maybe Puss in Boots is my favorite this year?

George Santos is even making Joanne the Scammer blush.

Who you may ask? Republican George Santos won the election back in November and flipped New York's 3rd Congressional district, representing the Northwest shore of Long Island. Afterwards people did some digging and the NYT has reported that pretty much every part of his background was completely fabricated. Yesterday, Santos released a letter admitting to most, but still, more lies have been exposed.

-- He stated he graduated from Baruch College and NYU. Lie. The Schools were unable to verify his records.
-- He stated he worked for Citigroup then Goldman Sachs. Lie. These companies, too, were unable to verify his records.
-- He stated he's been an openly-out gay man for a decade (which would have made him the first out-Republican elected to the House). Lie. He was married to a woman. Their divorce was finalized two weeks before he filed to run in 2020. He claims he then married a man, but that information from his bio is now gone.
-- He stated he ran a family-owned real estate business with 13 properties. Lie. He owns zero property.
-- He stated he never committed a crime and continues to do so, despite The Times uncovering that he was charged with fraud in Brazil and even confessed to Brazilian authorities.
-- He stated that he owes thousands of dollars to landlords and creditors but lended his own campaign $700k and has yet to explain how or where he got the money.

-- He stated his was a "Proud Jewish American." Lie. He's a Catholic who now claims he's "Jew-ish" like that makes any sense.
-- Santos reported earning millions from his own company, the Devolder Organization, but The Times could not find any public-facing assets or property tied to the company, nor were any clients listed on his financial disclosure form. Lying on this form is a federal crime.
-- Santos stated he lost four employees for a totally different company to the Pulse Nightclub Shooting. Again, a lie. He now states that they were in the process of being hired but did not disclose the name of said company or any other information about it.
-- He has stated that his grandparents escaped from the Holocaust by converting to Catholicism and moving to Brazil. Records show said grandparents never even lived in Europe.
-- He claims to run a tax-exempt animal rescue charity that saved over 2,500 cats and dogs. The IRS has no record of the charity.

Santos refuses to resign from his seat and House Republicans haven't said a thing because they don't care. Dem leadership on the other hand do not want him seated and say he's unfit to serve. They're calling for the Ethics Committee and Attorney General's Office to investigate. Watchdog group Common Cause has stated they have never seen someone who had made an entirely false life story like this before and also do not find him fit to serve.

Stay tuned because there's no doubt more lies will be exposed.

Mel C was supposed to be a special guest at a New Year's Eve concert organized by polish state broadcaster TVP 2. However, yesterday she posted that she wouldn't be performing bc she was made aware of issues (she doesn't say anything specific but it's about LGBTQ+ issues since Poiand's government and the state broadcaster have been attracking our community for years, they even made a "dcoumentary" called Invasion about activists).

Accoridng to ILGA 's annual Rainbow index Poland is the worst country for LGBTQ+ people in the EU.

"In light of some issues that have been brought to my attention, that do not align with the communities I support, I'm afraid I will no longer be able to perform in Poland as planned on New Year's Eve.

I hope to be back there very soon. Hope you're all having a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for 2023."
