Через несколько стирок белоснежные рубашки или блузки приобретают сероватый или желтоватый оттенок, выглядят неаккуратно. Как можно отбелить белые вещи, чтобы вернуть им ослепительную белизну и при этом не испортить ткань?

Чтобы белые вещи оставались такими же белоснежными, стирать их нужно отдельно от цветного и светлого белья, а вещи из хлопка и льна не стоит стирать вместе с вещами из синтетики или шерсти. Тогда они не приобретут серый оттенок. Если стираете в машинке, то при стирке к обычному порошку можно добавить порошковый отбеливатель или влить в отделение для предварительной стирки немного жидкого отбеливателя.

DIY NATURAL DYES with FREE PEOPLE

I've been a fan of Free People for ages, mainly because of their perfectly bohemian aesthetic and super cool warehouse headquarters (thanks instagram for reminding me daily of where I DON'T work). I always tune in for their WednesDIY on the Free People blog, so when they asked me recently if I wanted to guest post for today's DIY I couldn't say no - check out the DIY Fishtail Skirt I made for them.

 

We also thought it would be lovely to feature one of their DIYs here.  Free People blogger Julia (um, best job ever?) did this amazing natural dyes project which I knew you would love. 

 

I have always wanted to experiment with natural dyes and on a gloomy day in September I decided that it was time. This is such a fun, environmentally friendly project that takes a little bit of time, but very little cash.

There are a number of plants that can be used to make natural dyes, but for my first go-round I chose to use fruits and vegetables that I picked up at a local market.

 

What I got: red cabbage, lemons, oranges, beets, yellow onions, blackberries, blueberries, spinach.

 

*It’s important to remember when working with natural dyes that experimentation is key – depending on the amount of ingredients you use and how long you leave a garment in the dye, the color you get can vary.

For pinkish/red dyes:

Beets and blueberries can make a really lovely dusty rose color.

 

 

For bluish/purple dyes:

Blackberries and red cabbage can be used to make bluish/purple dyes.  

  

For copper/orange dyes:

I never realized what a beautiful color yellow onions can have! Their skins can make an alluring mustard yellow, coppery color.

 

 

For yellow dyes:

Orange and lemon peels can be used to make a soft pale yellow dye. 

 

 

For green dyes:

Finally, spinach can be used to make a beautiful shade of green. 

 

 

Now what?

To make the dye, chop up your ingredients and put them in a pot with twice as much water as ingredients.  Bring the water to a boil and let simmer for an hour.  For deeper colors, you can leave the ingredients in the water (without heat) overnight.

Remove the hard materials from the mixture with a strainer, leaving you with the liquid dye.

 

 

The beets were such a beautiful deep red color! I chopped them up and added water and when I started boiling the water turned red almost immediately.

 

  

For the onions, I peeled off the skins and used only that part – I have seen other examples of this online that yielded really nice results but I was actually doubtful that this would really work.  Turns out I was pleasantly surprised!

 

 

I had high hopes for the spinach… if anyone has tried this with spinach and gotten good results let me know what your secret is :)

 

 

After bringing each ingredient to a boil, I let them simmer for an hour while I prepared the fabrics to dye.

 

 

Before dying, you will also need to create a fixative, which will help your fabric hold the dye.

When working with berries, use a salt fixative – put 1/2 cup of salt in 8 cups of water, put the fabric in and simmer for one hour.

When working with vegetables, use a vinegar fixative – mix one part vinegar and four parts water, add your fabric and simmer for one hour.

When you remove the fabric, rinse in cold water.

The fabric is now ready to dye! 

 

 

I put the fabric in the dye and let it sit for a little while – the longer you let it sit, the deeper your shade of color will be. I removed the fabric when I felt like it had reached a nice shade of reddish pink – such a pretty color:

 

  

I was happiest with the color I got from the onion skins – a beautiful amber that worked so well on the fabric.

 

  

Wouldn’t it be cool to make friendship bracelets using naturally-dyed string?!

 

 

By the next day, the fabric dyed with the beets faded into more of a light pink color, but it was still really pretty! I think next time, though, I would leave the fabric in the dye for longer.  The fabric dyed with onion skins actually held out really well, and I LOVE the color it created. I loved it so much, I tried it out on one of my Free People bras:)

Easy No Sew Fleece Blanket Edging

What a week I have had – some good and some not so good.  How about I start with the good. 
I think I mentioned the Joann’s fabric store in Grand Island, NE. is having a liquidation sale as they are opening a new store in another location in town and I guess they are not moving any of the merchandise from the old store to the new one so they have had very good sales going on.  I purchased the anti-pill fleece in 2 yard segments to make single layer throws for my daughters, sons in law and grand children – 8 in all.  I didn’t want the throws to get too heavy so that is why I only used one layer for each.


I found directions on the internet for making the throws without the knots you usually see.  This edging looks more like a woven or crocheted edge.  I pretty much followed the directions on Helping Little Hands blog with a few changes of my own to make the 8 throws.

Here are the step by step photos and directions I used to make them.  I purchased Anit-Pill Fleece in 2 yard cuts…wanted the throws to be able to be washed and dried without getting pills which make fleece ugly and not so cozy.

Step 1  I trimmed the selvages off and straightened the ends.  This part is not difficult as they don’t have to be perfect rectangles.  The fabric always is wiggly so who is going to know if it is a llittle off square one way or another.

 

 Step 2 - Cut 1” slits around the entire edge and a 2” square out of each corner.  The 1” cuts are 2” deep.  I stuck a piece of painters tape 2” in from the edges of the fleece, laid the straight edge of the fleece on one of the lines of my cutting mat then used the rotary cutter to eyeball cutting every inch.  If it did not come out even in 1” increments I eyeballed to the end of where I was cutting and either added a little to each 1” fringe or subtracted a little so I wouldn’t have a really skinny or really fat strip at the corners.  I did cut through 2 layers at a time and it was no problem to keep my cuts even.  The tape really helped and cutting into it a little at times didn’t dull the rotary cutter like hitting the edge of a ruler would.  I cut the corners out with a scissors to avoid overcutting into the side strips.

 

After this step is done the rest could be finished sitting in my favorite chair and watching TV,  listening to music or an audio book.  These fleece throws are so easy even kids can do the edge treatment but would do the fringe cutting for them to keep them safe from those sharp rotary blades.  How about making a Christmas gift for grandparents or in my case I have gifts for my family for Christmas….OK, now on to the finishing of the edge treatment.

 

 

Step 3  Cut a small slit about 1/2” to 3/4” from the end of each strip with a scissors.  These small clips into the fleece are only about 3/8” long.  As you can see in the photo I just folded over the end and snipped to get the slit I needed.

 

 

 

 

 

I had a large crochet hook to use for the next step.  It is a size N but the size isn’t important, just need something that it will go through the slits I cut and be able to grab the next strip and pull it through.  The original web page had them using a looped paper clip  or wire for this step.  Check out the photos on that page.

 

Step 4  Starting in the center of one long side the crochet hook is slipped through the slit of one strip and into the one next in line. ( I am a left handed person so I am working from left to right – if you are a right handed person you will be going from right to left.  If you can’t figure it out check out the photos from the blog I learned this from here.  I was going to photograph it for right handed people but decided no, I am always having to transpose everything for myself from right handed directions so this time right handers would have to transpose and  I would just show how I did it.  If it were a complicated procedure I would have made it easy but since it is really pretty simple and self explanatory through the photos it stays left handed.)

 

The second strip is pulled through the slit of the first one and now the second one is on the crochet hook.  Next put the crochet hook through the slit in the next strip and pull it through….keep doing this all around the throw until you only have one strip left.

Step 5 The corners are treated no differently than the sides.  As the strips are pulled through and around the corners you will get a rounding of the corner and can keep going along the next side.  No fancy stuff just the same thing you have been doing on the sides.  
Step 6  The last strip is cut in half to make two smaller strips.  Cut a slit in the first strip close to the body of the throw and pull one of the half strips through that slit from the back then hook the other small strip and pull it through the last one you hooked as you worked around the throw.

   

Tie the two smaller strips together in a double knot and try to hide it under the back if you can.  I had trouble with this part and decided if the knot showed a little that was OK.  The ending is the only place where you have a small knot.  If you have ever used those other kind of throws made with two layers and knotted fringe you know how uncomfortable it is to lay on those huge knots.  With this edge the only knot is small and hopefully pretty invisible and not lumpy to lay on.

Tutorial ~ Sweater Refashion Posted: 26 Jan 2012 07:49 PM PST I shared this sweater refashion at Me Sew Crazy last week. I am posting this here today just in case you missed it!  {You will need} Sweater Fabric  Laces, Ribbons and buttons Matching thread {How to} 1. Wear the sweater and decided how high you want the triangles to go. For example, just below the bust line or a few inches below the bust line. Also, mark the center with a pin. 2. I made a triangle template out of a cereal box and cut 8 triangles out of the fabric. The size of the triangles all depend on how long you cut into the sweater. If you want a more flared look, make sure that the triangle has a wide bottom. If you want a subtle flare, the triangle needs to have a narrow bottom.  3. Start making the cuts to the sweater. I made 8 cuts in all. In the center on the front and back, just to either side to those center cuts, and the sides of the sweater. They are about 4" apart, but you need to adjust that according to the width of the sweater. Just make sure that they are equal and well balanced. 4. Fold the bottom of the triangles and sew. 5. Sew the triangles to the sweater using a Serger or zigzag stitches. 6. Since the sweater was one size bigger than my size, I cut off some fabric from the sides and under the arm.  7. Pin, and sew the side. Make sure to sew in the fabric triangle to the sides at this step. 8. Make sure to mark the center of the neckline. I wanted the neckline to be slightly lower, so I drew the line and made the cut around the neck. 9. Make bias tape for the neckline. I cut mine 1 3/4" wide. 10. Sew the bias tape around the neck with zigzag stitches. 11. Start adding lace & ribbons between the triangles. Cut them to random lengths and seal the ends with fray check. Pin them in the desired places to check the balance and sew.   12. I didn't care for the long sleeves, so I cut them... I made the cut at the ribbed part, and took 6" off. 13. Sew the ribbed part back to the sleeves. I made it into 3/4 sleeves. 14. I thought it was a little bare around the neck, so I decided to decorate a little. I made some yo-yo's, leaves, and flowers out of lace. Pinned all the embellishments onto the sweater to decide where I wanted everything. * Sizing for the embellishments * Yo-yo's: (S) cut 1 1/2"circles, (L) 2 1/2" circles (here is the link to how to make yo-yo's) * Leaves: use 3/8" wide velvet ribbon. Cut 2" and fold it in half and lay both ends together and sew. * Lace flowers: (I used 5/8" wide lace.) Cut a piece 5" long and gather the top and make a flower. 15. I wanted a little something at the back of the neck too. So, I added a tag with ribbon.  It is all done. All I needed to do was to try it on... LOOVE it!

1. What’s the name of your business and what do create and sell?

My business name is Mohop – it’s the phonetic pronunciation of my last name Mohaupt, which is of German origin.  I make wood-soled shoes.

2. Tell us how you got started with your indie business.

As soon as I starting working as an architectural intern after graduating from college, I felt like a desk job was not for me. After spending years stalking the websites of some of my favorite indie start-ups, as well as messing around with different crafts, it finally occurred to me one day:  I should make shoes.  Bells starting ringing, the angles sang, and I knew at that moment that I had found my career ’sole’ mate.  [Plus, there are so, so many shoe-related puns to have fun with  ]

3. What are your inspirations in your art and in life?

I’m inspired by other indie artisans, friends and family, the materials I use or would like to work with in the future, my gifted assistants and interns, fashion magazines, different fabrication processes, and lots of other random stuff.

4. Are there any pearls of wisdom you’d like to share with newbie indie business owners?

Don’t forget that making and selling cool products is only a part of a successful business.  There are 5 million other things that need to be done to run a business, and those 5 million things will take up an enormous amount of your time, especially if you plan on growing your business.  Take advantage of the free business counseling in your area – most cities have programs and resources to help small businesses.

5. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 things would you like to have with you?

My husband, my dog, and an enormous solar-powered refrigerator filled with vegan cupcakes and tofu.

6. What’s the best thing about what you do? And the worst?

The best thing is that I get to design and make shoes for a living, and I never get tired of it.  The worst thing is that I’m ALWAYS working – to the point that my poor dear husband has to take care of the essentials such as cooking and cleaning.  I rarely have time to spend with friends and family.  My ‘real’ life is basically on hold until I can figure out a way to become more productive and profitable in the business.

7. What blogs and mags do you read and what shops do you shop at?

I browse some of the gossip and fashion blogs to keep up with what’s going on – I actually am steadily gaining new celebrity customers every couple weeks – so I find it helps to know who’s who, as I otherwise live in a shoe-related vacuum.  I don’t have any real time to shop, unfortunately, but sometimes I do swaps with other designers, so I have a nice wardrobe of clothes and accessories.  Otherwise, it’s Target, which right between my house and studio.

8. Were you an artsy craftsy kid? If so, what kinds of things did you do?

I was definitely.  I grew up out in the country, without many neighbors to play with or even anything on TV, so I spent my time sewing, drawing, weaving, basically anything to keep my hands occupied.  (I also liked riding my bike and reading.)  My mom is a gifted artist and crafter, and taught me all sorts of things.

9. Do you like to cook, if so, share your favorite thing to cook. If not, share something you enjoy that someone else prepares for you.

I only like to cook (or preferably bake) every once in a while.  I do enjoy making the cupcakes in “Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World”  which are seriously the best cupcakes ever, better even than ‘regular’ cupcakes.

10. What does indie mean to you? You can give a literal definition, choose to be a little esoteric or a combination of both. 

That’s tough… I think for me it refers to a creative business endeavor that has roots outside the mainstream.  Profit isn’t the main goal, but is usually necessary to sustain the endeavor in the long term.

11. What are you reading, watching and listening to?

Reading:  When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris

Watching:  Season One of Flight of the Conchords on DVD

Listening:  My personal TV On the Radio station on Pandora.com

12. What’s one thing you’ve learned as an adult that you wish you knew when you were a kid?

I don’t know – I think I had a decent head on my shoulders as a kid.  I’m much dumber now… all I think about are shoes.

13. What’s new? Any new plans or products that you want to share?

I have just updated my wedge line – the new wedges have a pretty curved shape and an ‘ergonomic’ footbed like a clog, so they are ridiculously comfortable.  I’ve ruined myself for all non-Mohop shoes – other shoes pinch or are not supportive enough.  I’m no longer willing to suffer for fashionable shoes…  Also, I’m hoping to come up with a close-toed variation for winter.  But I say that every year, so we’ll see!

allowance, and in the first step sew 1 mm from the folded edge.
We can use a special presser foot that facilitates the work.

11).- Este es un tipo de dobladillo muy utilizado en los tejidos de gasa, chifón, etc. Es muy fácil de realizar y óptimo para dobladillos al biés en faldas, vestidos...

11.- This is a type of hem that is often used in fabrics like gauze,
chiffon, etc.  It is very easy to do and optimal for hems on the bias
in skirts, dresses...

12).- Solamente hay un paso a seguir para realizar este dobladillo: Entornar el margen de costura hacia el interior, pasar un pespunte zig-zag tupido y recortar el sobrante.

12.- It only takes one step to finish this hem:  Turn the hem allowance       
to the inside, run a zigzag stitch along the folded edge, and recut the
seam allowance next to the stitch.
