Venus, Southern Hemisphere

The night-side hemisphere (in red at the top) is made of infrared images taken at 1.74 micrometres, showing the lower layers of the cloud deck surrounding the planet at about 45-km altitude. This image was taken May 16, 2006.
This week in Long Beach, CA at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), I presented first results from the Andromeda Project. Thanks to the help of ~5100 registered participants and thousands of others who classified images, the science team was able to create an initial cataloga little more than one month after the launch of the site. This turn-around time amazed me, the science team, and nearly every astronomer I spoke to at the conference.

The island of Sanna is Norways oldest fishing village featuring a 9000-year-old hunting station with around 20 overhanging rocks and caves as well as mass graves dating back to the Black Death.
Kirkhelleren is the most impressive of all the caves on the island of Sanna. The cave is 32 m high, 20 m wide and 45 m deep. With an alter in the middle of the cave, a pulpit and pulpit stairs, Kirkhelleren is known as a cathedral formed by nature. Traces of one of Norways oldest settlements have been found here. Prehistoric finds, such as bone remnants and tools, confirm this. The cave was used as a burial site for 33 people, with the majority buried in mass graves in the 14th century.
A 2% Waning Moon and Venus
The Moon, which was 2% of full and the Planet Venus were in close approach on the morning of January 10, 2013. I shot this pictures with my Canon EOS Rebel Xsi Digital Camera from my home in Neptune, New Jersey. I used my Canon 75-300mm lens set at 300mm. Camera was set on manual. Fstop was f/5.6. Exposure was for 1 sec. ISO was 800. Visually pleasing for the length of time it was visible to the naked eye. http://www.rddnj.com
