Sure it’s not a land deal, but maybe we’re getting somewhere?
As Oscar Wilde semi-famously wrote in Lady Windermere’s Fan: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” Of course, the Middle East is not a four-act comedic play about a Victorian mother and daughter who are knocking boots with the same man (although sometimes it feels that way, nu?). Nevertheless, it seems important, extremely important, to note good things when they happen. If outrage (real or manufactured) can be summoned on a daily basis, why not take a holiday and summon some goodwill?
With that grandiose thing said, Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Jordan inked a dealyesterday to build a pipeline between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea. The deal was signed in Washington, D.C., and will help provide drinking water to all three parties as well as help revive the Dead Sea, which has been slowly drying up for years (or ever since tour guides started warning visitors against peeing in it).
The project will bring about 100 million cubic meters of water a year from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea to slow the drying up of the latter. It also will establish a seawater desalination plant in Aqaba, Jordan, to provide fresh water annually for all three signatories.
The World Bank is financing the project at a cost of $200 million to $400 million, with the three signatories to repay the bridge loans being used.

The Israeli navy is getting two German-built frigates under a $1.37 billion contract that will build up its maritime firepower, officials said.
Their primary mission is expected to be protecting the Jewish state’s rich natural gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean.
The warships, which the Israelis are expected to pack with their own weapons and electronic systems, such as the Barak 8 medium-range air defense system produced by Israel Aerospace Industries, will be the most advanced surface vessels in the Israeli navy.
The frigates will reinforce three advanced Super Dvora Mark III missile corvettes, known as Sa’ar 5s, currently on order from state-run IAI’s shipyards in Haifa. These ships will join four already in service and will be primarily deployed to shield the offshore fields that currently contain an estimated 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, with more expected that will earn an estimated $150 billion in export revenue over the next two decades.

Without the advanced warning and additional data supplied by satellites, the group’s missile defense systems are at a disadvantage against the Chinese “carrier killer” missiles that are streaking towards them. Defense systems do their best, but a few missiles still hit their mark, leaving the USSGeorge Washington’s flight deck unusable. America’s awesome air and sea power has been sidelined.
While far from a complete picture, this hypothetical scenario is the U.S. military’s worst nightmare. Now, of course, despite recent shows of force over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands and the occasional blustery threat to Taiwan, war will almost certainly not break out between the U.S. and China. But it is this scenario’s potential to be realized that helps keep war at bay.
To be clear: The United States military remains the world’s most fearsome fighting force, unbeatable on a one-on-one basis. Yet it would find a protracted war that could end in nuclear Armageddon too costly. China is keenly aware of that fact. So rather than orienting itself towards a total war it cannot win, China’s military strategy serves a smaller, but shrewder purpose — pushing the United States out of China’s backyard.

You have started on the road to success. What decisions have you made? What actions have you taken? And how does it feel to be on the road to success?

телевизор>>. Китайские старики занимаются спортом, путешествуют и ходят
на свидания. В итоге КНР вышла на второе место в мире по числу
столетних граждан!
78-летний пенсионер Чжу Гоу каждый вечер идёт на улицу... танцевать. Во
всех городах Китая оборудованы специальные места - и после наступления
темноты там собираются целые толпы пожилых людей. Разумеется, они
танцуют как умеют - иногда неуклюже, иногда профессионально. <<Это
чтобы кровь не застаивалась в ногах, - объясняет Чжу Гоу. - Старому
человеку нужно двигаться... Как говорила моя бабушка - если ляжешь, так
уже не встанешь>>. В КНР<<почтенному возрасту>> уделяют особое внимание
- всюду в парках есть спортивные площадки для пенсионеров: там можно
видеть, как сотни дедушек и бабушек, собравшись вместе, подтягиваются
на турниках, тягают гантели, занимаются гимнастикой ушу и дыхательными
упражнениями цигун. Продолжительность жизни в Китае сейчас составляет
75 лет, а к 2030 г. (как прогнозирует Минздрав КНР) достигнет 80.
Поднебесная вышла на второе место в мире по количеству
супердолгожителей (тех, кому перевалило за 100 лет) - 50 тысяч
человек. При этом китайские старики с удовольствием пьют пиво, едят
жирное мясо и, в общем, делают много вещей, которые запрещают врачи.
Так в чём же тогда секрет их долголетия?
<<Ездят, любят и работают>>
- Прежде всего наши пенсионеры очень активны, - считаетпрофессор
медицины из Гуанчжоу Хэй Лун. - В КНР нет такого, что человек вышел на
пенсию, а потом месяцами сидит дома и смотрит телевизор, жалуясь на
здоровье. Множество стариков отправляются в путешествия, объезжают всю
страну на автобусах, с рюкзаком за плечами - и в горы, и к океану. Те,
кто одинок, стараются начать новую личную жизнь, знакомясь в
Интернете: за последние годы число пенсионеров, отмечающих праздники
влюблённых вроде Дня святого Валентина, увеличилось на 50%! Всюду в
ресторанах вы можете увидеть пожилые пары, которые обнимаются друг с
другом так же горячо, как и молодые. Большинство крестьян после выхода
на пенсию (иногда в 70-летнем возрасте!) продолжают работать в поле и
на огородах, говоря: <<Нельзя останавливать бегущего тигра на ходу,
иначе он умрёт!>> Пенсии в Китае небольшие, в деревнях люди и вовсе
получают по 120 юаней (600 рублей. - Авт.). Но в 49-й статье
Конституции КНР закреплена обязанность детей заботиться о старых
родителях, иначе их... отдадут под суд! Согласно опросам, 90% китайских
стариков считают: после выхода на пенсию им живётся значительно лучше
(!), чем в молодости.
Особое внимание старики уделяют питанию. В КНР самый настоящий культ
еды. И хотя блюда местной кухни китайцы запивают вредным, но
популярным пивом, а главное мясо в стране - свинина, в Поднебесной
очень низкий процент заболеваемости печени и сердца. Почему? Китайцы
продукты не варят, а готовят на пару, сохраняя их сочность и полезные
свойства, а также едят много свежих овощей: свинина всегда подаётся
вместе с горой нарезанных салатов. В ежедневном рационе присутствуют
рис, кукуруза, бобы, обязательно - фрукты. Ещё одна немаловажная
деталь: мясо и рыбу в Китае стараются есть свежими, заморозку
используют нечасто. Например, креветок и рыбу на рынках продают только
в живом виде, иначе морепродукты считаются мёртвыми. Еда не готовится
впрок, и нет традиции<<разогревать вчерашнее>>. Также в Китае не
принято есть до появления сытости, тут встают из-за стола с чувством
лёгкого голода. Может быть, поэтому среди пенсионеров в КНР (да и
вообще по стране) проблемы с избыточным весом - редкость. Почти все
китайские старики - подтянутые, активные и бодрые.
<<Старайся жить без хирурга>>
- Как ни странно, свою роль в долголетии китайцев играет и то, что
наша медицина - платная, - рассказывает Сянь Хо, врач центра народной
медицины в Гуанчжоу. - Увы, денег стоит даже вызов<<скорой>>, а
5-минутный приём у врача обойдётся в 100 юаней (520 рублей. - Авт.).
Когда больной приходит в госпиталь, с него требуют денежный<<депозит>>.
В редкие бесплатные клиники для неимущих пациенты записываются за
месяц и ночуют в спальных мешках у здания, чтобы попасть к доктору
побыстрее. Поэтому люди издавна привыкли лечиться природными
средствами. Когда китаец заболеет, он покупает набор сушёных трав,
корней и вяленых лягушек, варит эликсир и пьёт: простуду в Поднебесной
никто не<<забивает>> химическими препаратами. Но вот если требуется
операция, то это уже сложнее - все родственники собирают деньги. В
общем, в Китае в ходу поговорка: <<Живи так, чтобы потом не понадобился
хирург>>.
С 1991 г. по рекомендации медиков в КНР внедряется культ<<золотого
двадцатилетия>>. Китайцы считают, что основные заболевания человек
приобретает в период от 40 до 60 лет и именно в это время нужно
правильно питаться: пить в 2 раза больше воды, употреблять меньшее
количество соли (максимум 15 грамм), резко увеличить в рационе
количество свежих овощей и фруктов. Имеет значение и образ жизни-
спать следует строго не менее 8 часов в сутки. По уверению Минздрава
Китая, подобные меры помогают людям избежать к пенсии столь
распространённой болезни, как атеросклероз.
В КНР уже 13% пожилых людей, но правительство не бьёт тревогу.
Китайские старики - уважаемая часть общества, их не считают обузой. К
ним относятся с почтением, они активно проводят время, участвуют в
жизни своих семей, работают до позднего возраста, нормально питаются.
Серьёзный минус - дороговизна медицинских услуг, но китайцы научились
и из этого извлекать пользу.
Пожалуй, самое главное - в их жизни нет такого количества стрессов,
как в жизни стариков российских. Как скромно заметил пенсионер Чжу
Гоу: <<Если жена ругается, я иду в другую комнату и рисую там иероглифы
счастья... Жизнь слишком коротка - если растрачивать её на злобу, она
станет ещё короче>>. Китай планирует добиться, чтобы его граждане жили
дольше всех на Земле. Похоже, у него это получается.

Надпись и впрямь необычная: «11-я заповедь: живи в свое удовольствие!» Что это - хитрый коммерческий ход, призванный заставить посетителей тратить больше денег, или действительно важное напоминание, настолько важное, что его можно сравнить с десятью заповедями?
Прежде чем ответить на этот вопрос, позвольте рассказать вам об одном интересном научном факте.
Немецкие психологи, работающие с детьми, больными последней стадией рака (на этой стадии болезнь считается безнадежной), решили провести необычный эксперимент: исполнить самое сокровенное желание ребенка и посмотреть, как исполнение мечты скажется на самочувствии маленьких пациентов. В эксперименте участвовало несколько тяжело больных, обреченных на скорую смерть ребятишек. Что же пожелали дети?
Четырехлетняя малышка, живущая в деревне, захотела прокатиться на трамвае. Одиннадцатилетний мальчик грезил о том, как сядет на лошадь, а тринадцатилетняя девочка мечтала стать принцессой: чтобы у нее были слуги, и ей, как принцессе, целовали ручки.
Психологи арендовали трамвай и часа два катали маленькую девочку по городу. Ей показывали интересные достопримечательности, поили чаем со сладостями... Для мальчугана и его отца нашли пару лошадей - и отец с сыном поскакали вдоль моря... Самым сложным желанием было превращение пациентки в принцессу. Но медики нашли выход: они арендовали старинный замок, взяли напрокат красивую старинную одежду. Врачи нарядились придворными, а девочку одели в платье принцессы. Маленькая принцесса ходила по залам, все ей прислуживали и, как она и мечтала, целовали ручки.
Последующие результаты медицинского обследования оказались просто потрясающими. У одного ребенка рак полностью исчез, у других болезнь либо пошла на убыль, либо как минимум приостановилась!
Этот эксперимент подтвердил истину, которую знали древние врачи, но почему-то частенько забывают современные эскулапы: наши эмоции оказывают самое сильное и непосредственное влияние на наше самочувствие и здоровье. Положительные эмоции и хорошие мысли способны не только доставить радость и ощущение счастья, но и победить самую страшную болезнь. Вот почему фраза «живите в свое удовольствие» - совсем не шутка, а самая что ни на есть важная истина.

A Love Story
A couple were Christmas shopping. The shopping centre was packed - as the wife walked through one of the malls she was surprised when she looked around to find that her husband was no where to be seen.
She was quite upset because they had a lot to do. She became so worried that she called him on her mobile phone to ask him where he was.
In a quiet voice he said, "Do you remember the jewellers we went into about five years ago where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we couldn't afford, and I told you that I would get it for you one day?"
The wife choked up and started to cry and said, "Yes, I do remember that shop."
He replied, "Well, I'm in the bar next door."

Can Cold Water Clean Dishes? This is for all the germ conscious folks that worry about using cold water to clean.
John went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of Saskatchewan .
After spending a great evening chatting the night away, the next morning John's grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast.
However, John noticed a film like substance on his plate, and questioned his grandfather asking,
'Are these plates clean?'
His grandfather replied,
'They're as clean as cold water can get em.
Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!'
For lunch the old man made hamburgers.
Again, John was concerned about the plates,
as his appeared to have tiny specks around
the edge that looked like dried egg and asked,
'Are you sure these plates are clean?'
Without looking up the old man said,
'I told you before, Sonny, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don't you fret, I don't want to hear another word about it!'
Later that afternoon, John was on his way to a nearby town and as he was leaving, his grandfather's dog started to growl, and wouldn't let him pass.
John yelled and said, 'Grandfather, your dog won't let me get to my car'.
Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, the old man shouted!
'Coldwater, go lay down now, yah hear me!'

It was in Japan. One of the metropolitan newspapers in Tokyo placed an advertisement read: " Sale parents : father 70 years old, and his mother 65 years. Price - 1000 yen , the yen is no less!"
People who read this strange announcement , wondering, " Well, time has come ! Children have parents sell" . Others added : "As soon as the authorities allow this ?" Well, the noise has done this ad . It was discussed in the house and on the street, like a sensation.
Newspaper ad fell into the hands of a young family who recently buried his beloved parents , who died in a car crash . They were in sorrow, and one's desire to sell the parents looked for them blasphemous . They imagined that they could feel unhappy parents in this situation. What do they expect from these children ? They decided to buy the old and surround them with his love . They took the required amount and went to the address ... When couples come to the place , we saw a luxury villa surrounded by flowers . They thought that the announcement crept error , but still decided to call .

A Taliban suicide bomber stopped and searched by police, was found with a metal shield around his penis. Asked about the purpose of this protection, his response was: he wanted to keep his penis intact after the explosion, not to have sexual problems once he found his 72 virgins in heaven...!
