A 300 foot aerial view over Gold Hill, Oregon. The city was incorporated in 1895 & is alongside the Rogue River & Interstate 5, having a population of 1,220 as of 2010.

Joseph von Fraunhofer was both an inventor and scientist. In his short life (he died at the age of 39 presumably poisoned by the heavy metal vapors emerging from the glassmaking process) he revolutionized techniques to manufacture optical glass at this small building which before was the wash house of the monastery formerly situated at this place. One famous example produced at this site is the still existing largest telescope of its time (1824) which was operated in a place that can be seen in this panorama by Andrew Bodrov showing a newer ZEISS refractor.

High above the town of Kiefersfelden the Zahmer Kaiser ridge of the Kaiser mountains range offers a relatively large number of mountain huts. This is one of the earliest in the area built in 1901.
