Hello Everyone!

Where should I begin….!I’VE WON THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN! YES!

When I finally celebrated my last point I felt something I’ve never felt before, it was a more peaceful victory compared to the one in Roland Garros and Wimbledon but at the same time, it was come completed. And I know why it was that way.

I grew up as a clay-courter and my style of game adapted to that: I learned to push my opponents out of the court and that made me wear out my physic with some much running around and long rallies.

But my uncle Tony and I knew that my game had to have more dimensions to it so that I could have the same kind of results on other surfaces.  I had to change my game radically, more direct and aggressive. I had to improve my service as well and control my game when going up to the net. Make my shots flatter and my volley more accurate.

We had lots of work ahead of us for sure.

Every year we’ve had improve my game on hard courts and even though I bit Djoko in the final of the Olympic games, this final against Roger Federer, (who has recuperated his form) was going to be a test of fire for me.

But we made it!

All the hard work, the dedication I put into it was well worth it. And that is what sport is really about. A victory tastes amazing only if it is the result of hard work.

THANK YOU ALL OF ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT!

Rafa

Rafa: I'm relieved that Uncle Toni is OK

Toni_and_rafa_nadal Hi Everyone,

Again I am writing this blog post late, after a nice dinner with all the Spanish players here in Melbourne. Our new Davis Cup captain took us out for dinner all of us and we had a great time all together. I think Albert (Costa) is a great guy and will be a great captain. We all have a great relationship with him and he is very close to us. A guy really, really down to Earth and someone who knows us and understand us very well.  For me with him this is not a start since I know him for many years and we have seen and talked to each other a lot in these months, but now he is officially the captain and it is great.

For the rest, I had an "early day". I mean I hit in the morning today and left the site pretty early too. I had some lunch on-site with Juan Monaco and some friends of his that came to Melbourne. Funny lunch and you can imagine we talked about many things including football (soccer), When you have Argentineans and Spaniards, for sure that at some point we are going to talk about football.

And now that he is better I can say it. My uncle Toni had a problem in his back the other day. He had to stay the whole day in bed and the doctors had to treat him. I felt really bad for him. He made a great effort yesterday to come to the match. He almost couldn't move since he had a sciatic (hope this is the right word). He is much better now and should be OK tomorrow to be with us on court at the box.

And tomorrow I am back to play day match. It will be around 2pm local time and I am really looking forward to it.

Many thanks

Rafa

Q. You've been involved now in two of the best matches most of us have ever seen: the Wimbledon final and now this one. What was the emotion at the end of this one?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, a lot, no? Was very emotional today. Well, was amazing match, no? Verdasco was playing unbelievable. I don't know.

I think seems like in the fourth set he was little bit tired. But he start to serve at 212, 215 all the time, and all the serves in. I didn't have any chance for have the break in the fourth. I was okay with my serve, I was playing well, and I didn't have chances in the fourth. In the tiebreak, he played unbelievable, no?

So I think I was very good mentally all the time, believing in the victory and being very focus, because was very tough, no? In the fifth set even, I had a lot of opportunities, and he served all the time unbelievable, no?

So was too tough. But for sure for me is amazing be in this final, especially with one match like today, no? Fernando was playing I think his best level in his career. He continues like this, he's gonna have chances for be in any number of the ranking, no? So for win against Stepanek, 6‑4, 6‑0, 6‑0, against Murray and against Tsonga, he must play very well, no? He's doing very well, yeah. Too well.

Q. You said the other day that you never played with the best of Verdasco when you beat him six times. Did you expect he could play so well like he did tonight or were you a little bit surprised?

RAFAEL NADAL: When I went to the match, I just thought if he beat Tsonga and Murray, and Murray was coming very well, and Tsonga, too, he must play very well, he must be playing very well.

Q. Tonight he played even better, no?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. You have to ask him. I saw his level very good, yeah.

Q. How would this compare in drama and emotion to the final at Wimbledon against Federer, then maybe the Rome match against Federer a couple years ago?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, you can't compare the matches, no? The final of Wimbledon was the final of Wimbledon. After two finals for me was little bit more emotional.

But today was, yeah, one of these matches you gonna remember long time, no? Well, the emotion was big, because in the last game with the Love‑40 I start to cry. Was too much tension, no?

Q. What did you say to each other at the end of the match?

RAFAEL NADAL: I said him, he played very well, and congratulate him. I just congratulate him for his tournament, for his start of the season, and just say, If you continue like this, you can do everything, no?

He deserve this final, too, because his level was very well, very good. Well, he congratulated me, for sure.

Q. You're not only the No. 1 in the world, but you are one of the top players in the politics of the ATP. Is there nothing you can do to avoid this problem of scheduling, that you have one day of rest and Roger has two? Apart from Wimbledon, every tournament is screwed up. The US Open, they do what they want. Roland Garros, they do what they want. Here the same. Don't you think the players should do something?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I think Roland Garros is not like this, no?

Q. They play sometimes one day before the other.

RAFAEL NADAL: No. The last four years not (smiling).

Well, the US Open was for both player the semifinal the same day. Here is the only tournament is not like this. But, you know, you still have one day off. So that's the sport. For sure is a little bit more fair if you play the same day.

But is like this. Last year was for me, and this year was for Roger in this case, no? Last year I played on Thursday. I lost. I didn't play the final. But, anyway, I play on Thursday, and Roger play on Friday.

Well, this little bit unlucky play one match like today, too hard. So for sure Roger gonna be in much better performance physically than me for the final.

But at the same time I gonna try to be recovered for the final and play my best. I don't know if we can do something because we are involved of the council. But the true, right now I not ready for speak about politic.

Q. How hard is it to keep up that level of intensity for over five hours?

RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, was hard because I know have a break gonna be very tough when he was serving. But, anyway, I have to be very happy with me, because I served well all the time. I have 100% concentration in all the moments.

And, for sure, is tough when you're playing against one player, he always play aggressive, playing winners. So that's killing you all the time, no?

But that's nice, too, no, for try to find solutions, try to change the tactic ‑ I don't know. These matches improve yourself, no?

Q. What will you do tomorrow? What can you do to help yourself recover?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I don't know what time I gonna sleep. What time is it?

Q. Quarter to 3:00.

RAFAEL NADAL: No, because I have the Spanish time here (laughter).

Well, I don't know. Is tough to sleep after one match like this, no? The tension, everything. Have to eat something, doing a little bit more massage. Tomorrow sleep. I don't know at what time I gonna wake up. Probably in the afternoon around 6:00, 7:00 have some practice.

Q. How exciting is it for you to finally play Federer in a Grand Slam on hard court?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, always is ‑ I don't know ‑ special play against Federer any match, no? You play another final of Grand Slam is more exciting, no?

Little bit unlucky. Don't know how I gonna be for the final. I gonna try my best for sure for recover my body and my physical performance. But, you know, after one match like this, the next days you feel much heavier, no?

But for sure for me is amazing play another final of Grand Slam. Here in Australia, the first one. Well, unlucky all the time is against the same: the best. For sure, I prefer another opponent. But that's makes big the sport, too, no, finals like this.

Q. Do you plan to play closer to the baseline against Federer? Tonight you had to run really a lot.

RAFAEL NADAL: Was tough to be more inside, no? What do you think? Did you see the speed of the ball or not (laughter)?

Q. I saw he was able to stay farther in front.

RAFAEL NADAL: I would love to be more inside, yeah. I gonna try to be more inside for the final, but I am playing against Federer.

Hi everyone,

It is late today so a short blog. Yesterday I made a mistake with my English (actually Benito who translates for me) so apologies for that.

Today I want to explain to you the extreme heat we had. It was great to play with the roof closed. I know some people are against that but I can tell you that to play out there today with that heat would have been almost criminal. I went to practice at 4.30 pm and believe me when I say my feet were literally burning. IT was very, very hot. I was only warming up, oh well, just to be out there was warm, but you know what I mean. I was hitting and my feet were really hurting because of the heat. I could not imagine going out there today and play.

I understand the roof makes a different game but the health of the players is also important.

Regarding the match, I knew it would be as it was, very difficult and had very clear the tactic I had to play. IT worked well and managed to win. Gilles already beat me in Madrid at the end of last year and remember that's home for me to play. In front of my fans, my crowds and playing good tennis. As I say it worked well so I am happy.

Tomorrow I will practice in the morning (I have a car to pick me up at 10.15 am) and then hope to spend the afternoon relaxed in my room watching a movie or something.

Hasta mañana.

Rafa

Hi everyone,
Once again I am here writing this blog, that more than a blog is a diary. Maybe blog means that... or it should have been named digital diary... or maybe I am just not right. In any case I am good at doing this if I have to write about what I did during the day and a few thoughts, but not more...

So today I went pretty early to the tournament site. I practiced for over an hour and 30 minutes and tried to stay very little on-site. I think today it has been the day I have gotten back earlier to the hotel in many years. At 2pm I was back at the hotel and rest all day long. I did go to the gym a bit with my physio Rafa Maymo but not much.

We just came back from dinner where we were a few of us. My whole team Toni my uncle, Carlos Costa my manager, Rafa Maymo my physio, Benito Perez-Barbadillo my PR Manager, Tuts Robert from Nike, my father, Feliciano Lopez and his team Jose Perlas and his physio Marc.

We had a nice dinner at a place with excellent meat. It is funny since I normally don't eat meat the day before a match. I try to eat something lighter. But tomorrow I am playing at night so it is OK if I would play at 3 or something like that I would not have eaten it. I will go to the site at 4 to warm up around 5.30 and be ready for the match at 7.30.

Hope I can be with you writing again in 2 days...
Thanks
Rafa

Rafa: I'm back but I have to stay focused on my tennis

Nadal_2

Hi everyone,

First of all I would like to apologise for not sending a blog yesterday and the day before. I did send the answers to your questions during the morning but could not send the blog on Saturday night since I got back to the hotel really late after my match.

I really wanted to do it after my practice yesterday but the day went long and my PR person had to do other things and wasn't able to help me with the typing and most important the correction of my English. I don't write so well so needed him. And yesterday night more of the same, he was busy and by the time he got back to the hotel I was already sleeping.

But I am back here again and I have to say that very happy to be writing. A couple of days ago I was saying that if I was still writing the blog meant that I was still in competition. So here I am and happy for the way things went today. Also the other night against Haas, but today I confirmed to myself and to my fans that I am feeling great, comfortable and playing great tennis.

As I said today that doesn't mean that in the next match I will play as well. I could play great or if I have a bad day maybe things don't go as well. You never know. It is true that I am feeling very comfortable and feeling I am playing at my best level here in Australia.

I leave the questions to you in case you want to know more of what I do during the day. I didn't really do much these 2 days and didn't get anywhere out of the hotel or the tournament site. If you think about it, after all these days and as the tournament advances it could sound boring.

Our focus is to be ready and to play in the best condition and if I go out and do tourism or things I would normally not do, things could go the other way. I rather stay focussed and be ready.

Thanks to all, and tomorrow more.

Rafa

Hi everyone,

Easy day today with practice and a lot of resting. In these kind of days I practice early and nowadays try to get to the hotel earlier. In the past I would hang around the tennis tournament and speak to a lot of people, watch some matches on TV in the locker room or the players' lounge or things like this.

Nowadays I am trying to get earlier to my hotel so that I can have some rest. We got early today back to the hotel and managed to watch some matches on TV. I saw the Djokovic v Delic match or at least most part of it. I also saw some parts of del Potro vs Muller. Tough matches both and that gives you the level of difficulty of a tournament like this. NO easy rounds.

Also on these days that I have more free time I work with the media and attend some of them for interviews. Sometimes I prefer to do this work after matches and sometimes, depending on the tournament I do it during my free day. They are usually long so it varies on how I feel.

What else can I tell you about today? I am really running today out of ideas... I suppose that with the questions and answers is OK for today... Sorry. Anyway tomorrow I have an important match against a player who's been around for a while now [Tommy Haas]. He is playing great and I know it won't be an easy match. Let's hope I am writing this blog Sunday night... it would mean I am still in.

Many thanks to all for your support.

Rafa
