1 Hard boil an egg or two. The larger your jewelry, the more eggs you need. Similarly, if you plan to oxidize multiple pieces of jewelry, you will need to add more eggs.
2 Place the egg in a plastic bag or other air tight sealed container. Mash the egg with a fork while it is still warm. There is no need to remove the shell, since you will not eat the egg later. Be sure that the yolk is well mashed, since the yolk is the primary source of sulfur. Note that if you mash the egg in the plastic bag there will be little cleanup.
3 Place the jewelry in the air tight container with the egg. Try to situate the jewelry so it does not touch the egg mixture directly. You want the fumes from the eggs to coat the jewelry, but cleanup will be easier if the egg itself does not coat the jewelry. Set aside. The sulfur in the egg yolk will react with the sterling silver and create an antique look. The longer you leave the jewelry in the container, the deeper the color will turn.
4 Check the jewelry periodically as it oxidizes to determine when your piece has achieved the color you want. Your jewelry will start turning golden brown and then go through a rainbow of colors until it gradually turns black.
5 To be sure the color is even, turn your jewelry over from time to time.
If the surface of the jewelry is left on the counter, the jewelry will not oxidize evenly, so be sure to turn the bag over a few times during the oxidation process. Remember, although cleanup will be easier if you do not egg your jewelry, it really does not matter if the egg gets on your piece; it can be cleaned off. Expect to wait at least 20-30 minutes to achieve a nice patina, but you can leave the jewelry overnight or all day if you are sure you want a very black patina.
6 When the color of your art jewelry has deepened to a point you are pleased, remove the piece from the sealed container and rinse it with water. You are done, unless you want to selectively remove some of the oxidized finish with steel wool (or an abrasive of your choice, such as Comet, and a sponge) to bring back out highlights in your hand crafted jewelry.
