In the United States and Canada a prom, short for promenade, is used to describe a formal dance held at the end of an academic year. In the United Kingdom, the term is more widely understood to be in reference to a season of classical concerts or "proms", which have been held between July and September since 1895, today run by the BBC. The British synonym for the North American event would be Valedictory Ball, Leavers' Ball, Leavers' Dinner or informally Leavers' Do, closer to the Australian description (see below.) In Canada the terms Grad or Formal are most common and the event is usually only held for those in their graduating year of high school or middle school.
While proms at smaller schools may be open to the entire student body, large high schools may hold two proms, a junior prom for those finishing their 11th grade year and a senior prom for those who are finishing their high school or middle school years. However, most schools hold a prom open only to juniors, seniors, and their guests. The name is derived from the late nineteenth century practice of a promenade ball. The end of year tradition stemmed from the graduation ball tradition.
Boys usually dress in black tie (a dinner jacket and bow tie), sometimes with brightly colored cummerbunds or vests, though any sort of formal wear can be worn. Traditionally, girls gave boys matching boutonnieres to be worn on the tuxedos. Girls traditionally wear formal gowns or dresses adorned with a corsage given to them by their date. Many boys also match the color of their tie to their date's dress. Often, boys and girls will dress according to the theme of the prom - e.g. pastel suits for a Miami Vice-themed prom.
Common prom activities include dining, dancing, the crowning of a prom King and Queen, and socializing. In some cases, high school students accumulate funds for their class prom through fundraisers over the four years they attend their high school. High schools in or near large cities may rent ballrooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, venues such as a pleasure cruise boat. Many students group together to take limousines to their proms. Often costs are cut by using the school gym, which challenges the decorating committee to somehow mask the gym odor and drab surfaces. Music played during the dance portion of the event is normally the genre(s) most popular with the attendees.
Some high school students feel that the prom is the most romantic night of their lives. They may go in a group that includes a person they have known for years; other times, students just try to find a date that they like. Many find it to be just as fun to attend with friends, not worrying about the dating aspect of the prom. The occurrence of inappropriate conduct and occurrence of violence or alcohol/drug abuse is common though discouraged.
Some universities and colleges have proms as well, depending on the size of the graduating class in a faculty or department.
Prom King and Queen A Prom Queen is a woman who is elected to be, as the name suggests, queen of the prom. She traditionally becomes Prom Queen by her fellow students casting votes and electing their queen. Recently, however, some schools hold raffles to avoid a popularity contest amongst students and pick the Prom King and Queen at random. Normally any student from any class is eligible to be voted; however, some schools only elect seniors. The Prom Queen is partnered with a Prom King who is elected similarly. They both have a Prom King and Queen dance to celebrate their election.
The practice of crowning a Prom King and Queen is uncommon in Britain though widespread in the USA.
Related Social Gatherings Some American Christian high schools and colleges that disallow school-sponsored dances will host a Junior/Senior. Rather than dancing being the main planned event, a banquet is served. Typically, students still dress in formal attire and even bring dates. The tradition of Junior/Senior is popular at small Christian colleges such as Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky and Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois.
As described in the introduction, in British English, such an event might be called a ball, although in Australia, and New Zealand it is also often called a School Formal as well as a Ball. In Australian schools the terms used are either School Formal (although most commonly abbreviated to 'Formal'. The same event for students not occurring in their final year of school is referred to as a 'Semi Formal') which is not relegated solely to the final year or sometimes as Dinner-dance, Leavers' Dinner, Debutante Ball or also Valedictory Dinner, usually so when the night includes a meal and is in the final year of high school.
In Sweden this kind of event is usually known as Studentbalen. The word "Studentbalen" is in this case a proper noun meaning "The Student Ball", while the word studentbal is a common noun that can refer to any formal dinner and dance at a Swedish university. Studentbalen is usually held during the last weeks before graduating (Swedish: "Ta studenten") after three years in secondary school (Swedish: Gymnasieskola) and can be a quite formal, white tie event though the practice differs greatly between schools.
In Ireland it is known as a debs (an abbreviation of debutante ball) or a grads (in all male schools). In the U.S. a "formal" is typically a similar dance that is held by a fraternity or sorority affiliated with a certain college or university. In Australia, the term "prom" has also come into sparse usage and in Britain it is becoming widespread, because of US influence, especially the influence of American movies and television.
Germans will celebrate the Abifeier or "Abi Parties" after graduating from the Gymnasium, and many as well an "Abi Ball" (which means Graduation Ball/Dance). The final exam in the Gymnasium is the Abitur and contributes the first half of the name "Abi Feier". A Feier is a party or more formal festivity. Although informal, private graduation parties have always been popular in Germany. The "Abi Ball" which is pretty common is a more formal festivity with all of the graduates of one school, ball room dances and later in the evening disco dancing with (in most cases) a live band, and eventually some program set up by the graduates (honoring the most liked teachers, playing skits, male ballets etc). Alcohol is normally served at all these occasions since German kids graduate with 18-20 years (after 13 years of school in the school type Gymnasium - there are other school types where kids graduate earlier). However, kids graduating earlier will drink alcohol too since the legal drinking age is 16 and the usage of alcohol is widely accepted.
In Colombia many private schools usually have "proms" aswell, in Medellin for example hotel rooms are booked for this purposes and alcohol is usually available.
In South Africa the equivalent is a Matric Dance, taking place during the matriculation (i.e. final) year of high school. The tradition is, however, very similar to the American one.
In Pakistan the equivalent is farewell dinner that takes place at the end of the college academic year.
In India the equivalent is an Annual Day or a Sports Day where lot of cultural events happen such as Drama, Dance and honoring the best students who scored well in their academics. In some states of India(mostly northern) it is called farewell party where everyone meets including teacher.
In Slovenia the equivalent is Maturantski ples after graduating from high school. Students can bring dates and/or close family to the ball. It is a custom that each student dances the first dance of the night with his mother/her father.
In Turkey the equivalent is called "Graduation Ball". The type and the rules of the organization is completely up to the school board.
In Italy the equivalent is known as "Mak ? 100" because it takes place 100 days before the students' graduation in high school. In military schools it is similar to the American prom, whereas in civil schools it is less formal, it can be held in discos and the students can perform a cabaret show in which they make a parody of their teachers.
Anti-prom is an alternative social gathering, usually held to protest a prom.

Вышла книга об Алексее Навальном
5 декабря в продажу поступает книга Константина Воронкова "Алексей Навальный - гроза жуликов и воров". Книга была написана за очень короткий срок: идея рассказать о Навальном родилась у автора весной 2011 года. По словам Воронкова, он хотел не только понять феномен Навального, но и позволить самому герою ответить на вопросы о себе. "Лента.ру" предлагает читателям фрагмент из главы "Демократ".
Из беседы с Алексеем Навальным:
"…В 17 лет мне казалось, что мои политические взгляды сформированы, о чем я гордо всем и заявлял. Сейчас об этом смешно вспоминать, потому что за прошедшие годы эволюция этих взглядов была очень сильная. Но тут нет ничего страшного. Страшно было бы это отрицать.
Я был продуктом советской эпохи: когда все развалилось, никто ничего не понимал, ни в экономике, ни в жизни, и все строилось по принципу: "Сейчас мы все расфигачим, продадим в частную собственность, и начнется прекрасная жизнь". Я был абсолютно с этим согласен: Чубайс, Ельцин, все приватизировать, Верховный Совет расстрелять! Все мы помним расстрел Белого дома в 93-м году, когда все бегали, и я в том числе, и кричали "раздавить гадину!" Я тогда учился на первом курсе, и мы с другом Андреем Смолячковым поехали на экскурсию по горячим точкам столицы. По Новому Арбату бегали спецназовцы и прятались от снайперов: бежит чувак в каске, приседая за машинами, а вокруг стоят человек шестьсот с открытыми ртами и на него смотрят. Очень смешно. Мы перелезли через забор зоопарка, чтобы поближе подобраться к Белому дому. Вокруг слышна стрельба, в клетке мечется перепуганный тигр. Вот тогда как раз было понятно, что всех разгонят, подавят и расстреляют.
Все это заложило основу тому, что происходит сейчас. Все это сделал не Путин. Это сделали Ельцин и вся та комсомольская сволочь, которая стала великими реформаторами и великими приватизаторами. Но, разумеется, действовали они при полной поддержке таких людей, которые говорили: "Давайте все снесем и будем в полном шоколаде! Пусть приходят иностранцы! Пошлины отменить!" А тем, кто мне говорил, что есть пенсионеры, и что-то еще, я был готов выцарапать глаза. Должна быть рыночная экономика, а кто не вертится - тот лишний! С другой стороны, если бы я не был тогда таким, то не смог бы сформировать своих нынешних политических взглядов. Думаю, что многие ядерные демократы, вся эта гозманщина и чубайсовщина, все это понимают не хуже меня, просто не хотят признавать своих ошибок. Они просто были взрослее и несут за то, что случилось, прямую ответственность. И поэтому они так и продолжают говорить, что нужно было уничтожить "красных директоров" и все раздать. Сейчас, когда в это уже совсем мало кто верит, они запустили легенду, что, дескать, мы остановили гражданскую войну и голод. Это, конечно, ложь. Голода у нас не было. Да, многого не хватало. Но мы все жили в Советском Союзе, там тоже продуктов не было. А гражданскую войну они не остановили, она случилась в половине республик.
Теперь я, конечно, понимаю, что разделяю за произошедшее тогда ответственность с огромным количеством людей, потому что стоял на позициях "Раздавить Хасбулатова! Всех расстрелять! Ельцин, вперед!". Эта фундаменталистская позиция и привела нас туда, где мы сейчас находимся. В конечном итоге она привела к власти Путина. Непосредственную ответственность несут, конечно, те, кто принимал решения, и в том числе Хасбулатов, когда стал раздавать автоматы. И Ельцин со своим незаконным указом о роспуске Верховного Совета. И вся эта творческая интеллигенция, которая вопила - что это за Конституция?! Освободите нас от этой Конституции! Разогнать Верховный Совет! Всем тогда казалось, что идеалы важнее закона. Не нужно теперь посыпать голову пеплом, а нужно просто признать, что это было ошибкой и привело к тому, что мы сейчас здесь имеем…"
У Навального есть целая теория насчет места своего поколения в истории (он называет его "76-82", по годам рождения принадлежащих к нему людей). В двух словах она сводится к набору очевидностей вроде: мы получили полную дозу облучения Советским Союзом, но взрослая жизнь началась уже в другой стране; ветер перемен продул наши не до конца сформировавшиеся мозги, превратив нас в хунвейбинов либерализма; новый мир строили те, кто был немного старше, а те, кто был немного младше, прекрасно в этот мир вписались, потому что не знали другого. Мы же так и остались стоять враскоряку, став очевидцами интересных времен, но ничего от них не получив и не зная, как себя применить.
Впрочем, в исполнении Навального это больше похоже на брюзжание: ему приятно сознавать, что, в отличие от многих, у него главное всегда было в будущем, а не в прошлом. К тому же любое обобщение требует ретроспективы. В ретроспективе же превратившееся в прошлое настоящее выглядит печально по той лишь причине, что его уже не вернешь. Иначе говоря, все любят свою юность и скучают по ней.
В 1993-м все мечтали учиться на юриста или экономиста и работать менеджером. Мало кто хотел идти на инженера, за предыдущие пару десятилетий эта главная советская профессия стала синонимом полного социального фиаско. Никого не волновало, что рыночной экономике стали учить преподаватели социалистической политэкономии, а юристы продолжали изучать законы, большинство из которых - от Конституции до Уголовного кодекса - на глазах умирало. Всем был нужен диплом. Смена строя не означала замену советских людей на капиталистических; девиз позднего застоя: "Без бумажки ты букашка, а с бумажкой - человек!" - крепко сидел в головах большинства абитуриентов. Новой экономике были нужны энергичные люди с мозгами и знаниями, и если энергии в те годы у молодежи было полно и мозги еще не догадались утекать в западное полушарие, то знания было попросту неоткуда взять. Парадокс заключался в том, что законы физики и математики в новой России продолжали действовать. Фундаментальное естественно-научное образование, в котором в одночасье перестала нуждаться страна, в то время исправно функционировало; преподаватели социалистической физики и химии оказались замечательными преподавателями физики и химии капиталистической. Но невидимая рука рынка уравновесила спрос и предложение и указала всем их новое место: в то время как экономические и юридические факультеты вербовали товароведов и заведующих складами старшими преподавателями, старшие преподаватели технических вузов отправлялись торговать мороженым.
Алексею было все равно, кем стать, при условии выбора между экономистом и юристом. Экономика отпала сама по себе - там требовалась математика, с которой он, по его словам, не дружил. Он пошел на юридический факультет Московского государственного университета им. Ломоносова. Но не добрал один балл. И тогда успел поступить на юрфак в институт Дружбы народов им. Патриса Лумумбы. По крайней мере, из его "ближнего" Подмосковья туда было удобнее ездить. Как и положено студенту, у него началась интересная жизнь: он стал проводить большую часть времени вне дома, ходил в гости к однокурсникам и в ночные клубы, правда, то ли не пил, то ли хорошо шифровался - родители ни разу не видели его пьяным (жена Навального Юлия утверждает, что он не пьет вообще, ему это скучно; пьяным она видела мужа лишь однажды, на его день рождения, еще до свадьбы). Телефона в военном городке не было, и каждый раз, когда Алексей экспромтом решал остаться на ночь в Москве, он сперва ехал за город, чтобы предупредить родителей. Его мама, Людмила Ивановна, говорит, что не потому, что боялся скандала: мать человека, который сегодня едва ли не каждый день заставляет ее хвататься за сердце, уверена, что главное для него - душевное равновесие близких.
В начале 1990-х Людмила Ивановна работала на фабрике, где плели корзины и мебель. В школьные годы Алексей тоже подрабатывал там чернорабочим - ошкуровщиком, чистил лозу. Дела шли неплохо, пока в 1993 году вдруг не оказалось, что склад забит, а заказчики больше не хотят их продукции. Тогда это было в порядке вещей: экономические отношения менялись, как и отношения между людьми, нужное в то время становилось ненужным, а важное - неважным. Помыкавшись несколько месяцев без зарплаты, Людмила Ивановна загрузила корзины в машину и поехала продавать их на трассу. Через неделю, когда весь склад был распродан, а сотрудникам выплачена зарплата, его родители решили стать капиталистами. Вместе с Алексеем они составили бизнес-план и открыли свое небольшое дело - Кобяковскую фабрику по лозоплетению, которая со временем оказалась одним из немногих предприятий, сохранивших традиции русского плетения. Как мог, он помогал вести дело (позднее он будет шутить, что именно там научился плести заговоры), пока в 21 год не начал самостоятельную жизнь - скрепя сердце, ему попросту указали на дверь. Мать очень боялась, что он вырастет, но так и не научится летать. Его, конечно, не выставили на улицу - у семьи в Москве была квартира, в которой Алексей, закупив побольше сгущенки, и поселился. Уже через год он встретил свою будущую жену Юлию. Родители вспоминают, что на вопрос, кто эта девушка на фотографиях, двадцатидвухлетний Навальный, поразмыслив, ответил: "Если у меня когда-нибудь будет жена, надеюсь, что это будет она". Таким образом, его желудок был спасен. Отъезд из отчего дома омрачило лишь одно: любимый белый кот Алексея Хома не выдержал расставания и вскоре умер от разрыва сердца.
Уже со второго курса он рассылал резюме. Тогда у него еще не было опыта, который бы говорил за него, поэтому приходилось расхваливать себя самому. Он писал про свою активную гражданскую позицию и мероприятия, с успехом организованные в институте. Все это было беллетристикой - никакую особую позицию Навальный в те годы не занимал, равно как и ничего не организовывал. Он не из тех, кто занимается всем сразу; он предпочитает сосредоточиться на чем-то главном. А главным в то время было получить образование, найти работу и быстро разбогатеть.
Из беседы с Алексеем Навальным:
"…Рыночным фундаменталистам вроде меня казалось, что они все станут миллионерами. Все думали: раз мы такие умные, мы очень быстро разбогатеем. С третьего курса я начал работать юристом в разных местах. Все мне почему-то казалось неинтересным: сидишь, перекладываешь бумажки, когда люди вокруг зарабатывают свой миллиард. Но потом вдруг стало заметно, что богатыми становятся только те, кто так или иначе причастен к власти. Стало понятно, что в России источник денег - это не предпринимательские способности, а либо наследство от Советского Союза, как у директоров, которые стали хозяевами, либо близость к власти. В России деньги рождаются от власти. Только у одного моего однокурсника получилось сделать быструю карьеру в бизнесе. Он пошел работать в Госкомимущество, а потом стал президентом одного из крупнейших сырьевых предприятий. Такие люди, как он, смекнули, как надо делать деньги: устроиться на государственную должность, поучаствовать в приватизации, и тогда ты заработаешь.
Но вообще, наше поколение оказалось уже не "там", но еще и не "здесь". Те, кто были старше, - это хитрые комсомольцы, они понимали, как все работает, они грамотно обогатились, для них это было время возможностей. А у нас никаких возможностей не было. Только сейчас наше поколение в силу естественных причин приходит в политику и экономику и начинает влиять на развитие страны. Но большинство застряло между Советским Союзом и рыночной экономикой. У них оказались размытыми нравственные и этические ориентиры. Те правила они презирали, а новые у них не сложились…"
