Вчера, Portland Trail Blazers выиграли, все-таки, одну игру.

Правда, поскольку счет в серии 1-3, серию можно считать проигранной.

Три игры и три поражения.

Впрочем, именно этого я и ожидал. Команда Портланда, сильно ослабленная травмами,так и не смогла ничего противопоставить сопернику.

Осталось сыграть последнюю, четвертую игру в серии playoffs, но  только для того, чтобы, согласно правилам, закончить сезон после четырех поражений в серии.

Сезон, который так хорошо начинался, завершается на очень минорной ноте.

Впрочем,  это спорт!

А что.будет в сезоне следующем, жизнь покажет.

К тому, о чем я вчера писал.

&Кто-то прекратил всю эту мерзость.

По Сети гуляет жуткое видео.

И очень хочется надеяться, что это не настоящая казнь. Хочется надеяться, что это постановка.

Очень хочется на это надеяться&

Вот только я не понимаю, если это постановка, то зачем многократно преумножается ненависть, которой, как мне кажется, уже и так, более чем достаточно&

Завтра Portland Trail Blazers сыграют свою первую игру в playoffs. И, могу честно сказать, ожидания, отнюдь не радостные.

Команда будет играть с Memphis Grizzlies, с той командой, которой были проиграны все 4 игры основного этапа Чемпионата NBA.

Самая трудная команда досталась. И, переживания мои даже не об этом. Уж, очень много травм у команды из Портланда.

Впрочем, это уже playoffs. Слабых команд уже не осталось.

У Blazers были все шансы играть дома первые две игры и значит, теоретически, играть дома последнюю, седьмую игру, если до этого дойдет.

Но,  не случилось.

Сенат США никак не утвердит Генерального Прокурора, которого представил Обама.

Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama blasted the Senate Friday for stalling on the nomination of Loretta Lynch to be the next attorney general, the longest wait for a nominee to lead the Justice Department in three decades.

Enough. Enough. Call Loretta Lynch for a vote, get her confirmed, let her do her job. This is embarrassing, Obama told reporters during a joint White House press conference with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

There are times where the dysfunction in the Senate just goes too far, the President added. This is an example of it.

If confirmed, Lynch would be the first African-American woman to lead the Justice Department. It has been 160 days since Obama nominated her on Nov. 8, and the delay in her confirmation is the longest since Ronald Reagan tapped Edwin Meese for the post in 1984.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is holding up Lynchs nomination as leverage to push Democrats to drop a filibuster on an unrelated anti-human trafficking bill. Democrats object to that measure because it contains an abortion provision. McConnell has said he wont bring up Lynch for a vote until the dispute is resolved.

Obama called on Congress to move her nomination forward, saying that no one could articulate a reason beyond political gamesmanship as to why she has not been confirmed.

The moment was a particularly politically-charged one during a press conference largely focused on international trade and the Iranian nuclear agreement.

Republicans in the Senate have yet to offer a timeline as to a possible vote on Lynchs confirmation, and Eric Holder continues to serve as attorney general.

McConnells office insisted Friday that the majority leader is working to resolve Lynchs nomination.

The leader has already announced that the Lynch nomination will get a vote, McConnells Deputy Chief of Staff Don Stewart told CNN. Members are continuing to work to find a way to overcome the Democrats filibuster of a bipartisan bill that will help prevent women and children from being sold into sex slavery. Once that bills complete, the Lynch nomination is next.

Пришла страшная новость.

В украинской столице застрелен журналист Олесь Бузина. Оппозиционного писателя убили около подъезда его дома. Предположительно, киллеров было двое, сразу после происшествия неизвестные в масках скрылись на машине.

— Только что на улице Дегтяревской в районе дома номер 58 из автомобиля «Форд-Фокус» темно-синего цвета был расстрелян печально известный журналист Олесь Бузина. Номера на машине были или латвийские, или белорусские. Точно не украинские, — написал на своей странице в «Фейсбуке» советник министра внутренних дел Украины Антон Геращенко. — Похоже, что отстрел свидетелей по делу Антимайдана продолжается.

Не знаю, о каком отстреле свидетелей вещает Геращенко. Понятно, что убийство политическое. Без каких-либо вопросов.

Часть 1. Подлинная родословная украинцев | «Тайная история Украины-Руси»

Появляясь на политической арене, народ непременно выдумывает себе блестящую родословную. О ее достоверности никто не заботится. Главное – треск, фейерверки, увлекательность.

Древние шведы выводили себя напрямую от бога Одина. Поляки XIII века, когда их не бил только ленивый, приписали своим предкам победу над Александром Македонским. Евреи придумали сказку о своей богоизбранности. Что же касается украинцев, то они, по мнению большинства наших историков, существовали как бы всегда. Теорию эту называют «автохтонной» – в переводе с малопонятного древнегреческого «автохтон» – «самопорожденный», «коренной». То есть, по логике ее последователей, некий питекантроп, выведясь из обезьяны в Африке, пришел на берега Днепра, и тут потихоньку переродился в украинца, от которого произошли русские, белорусы и прочие народы вплоть до индусов.

Особенно рьяно эту схему поддерживали «интеллектуалы» начала 90-х, спорившие по поводу мировых проблем в Киеве на Майдане Незалежности. Она возвеличивала их в собственных глазах, несмотря на рваные штаны, недельную щетину и отсутствие зарплаты.

Мне же кажется, что с такой теорией можно вообще ничего не делать: все за тебя уже сделал талантливый предок-питекантроп. А ты лежи на диване, плюй на пол и презрительно наблюдай, как кто-то в телевизоре получает Нобелевскую премию или на стратегическом бомбардировщике летит на сафари в Ирак.

Если бросить взгляд на карту современной Украины, окажется, что она пестрит непонятными названиями. Внизу большой грушей болтается Крым, подаренный щедрым дядькой Хрущевым. С севера на юг текут реки с невразумительными для славянского уха названиями – Дунай, Днестр, Дон и Донец. На западе возвышается лесистая гряда Карпат с загадочной Говерлой, куда любил бегать за вдохновением президент Ющенко. На востоке за Кубанью – Кавказ, где как во времена Лермонтова, «злой чечен ползет на берег, точит свой кинжал». И только на севере понятные слова – Припять, Стоход, Горынь – маленькие тихие речушки, пробирающиеся по унылому Полесью. Получается, на юге и западе Украины когда-то до нас жили неславянские народы?

Да, именно так и получается, господа! Хочешь не хочешь, а мы тоже не первые на этой земле. И у нас, как и у американцев, были свои индейцы. Только звали их иначе. Не могикане и гуроны, а сарматы, половцы и татары. И лишь «переварив» их, мы, как поется в нашем гимне, «запанували у своїй сторонці».

Письменность у славян появилась в IX веке. Ее придумали Кирилл и Мефодий, приспособив для местных нужд греческий алфавит. С тех пор славяне стали вести собственные летописи. Но предыдущее тысячелетие тоже подробно задокументировано римлянами и византийцами. Столкнувшись с варварским миром, они дотошно отмечали все, что попадало в сферу их интересов.

Из римских хроник рубежа новой эры мы знаем, что в Карпатах жило дакийское племя карпов. Их современные ближайшие родственники – нынешние албанцы. «Карпаты» – так на их языке назывались горы.

Сама же Украина называлась Сарматией, по имени самого многочисленного и воинственного из обитавших тут племен. Там, где через полторы тысячи лет поедет по Дикому полю Тарас Бульба с сыновьями, шастали отряды тяжело вооруженных сарматских всадников в крепких чешуйчатых панцирях. Судя по языку, сарматы были иранцами. Именно они подарили название украинским рекам – Дону, Донцу и Дунаю. «Дон» в переводе с иранского означал «вода».

На рубеже нашей эры сарматы свирепствовали на всем тысячеверстном просторе причерноморских степей – от Кавказа до границы Римской империи, проходившей по Дунаю. Римляне называли их «женоуправляемыми» из-за сильных пережитков матриархата и важной роли женщин, участвовавших в боях наравне с мужчинами.

На севере сарматы граничили со славянами. Странная их политическая система поразила наших предков, оставшись в волшебных сказках сюжетами о Змеихе и Бабе Яге, жившей не в лесной избушке на курьих ножках, как в большинстве подобных историй, а в подземелье на берегу, в жаркой приморской стране «Девичьего царства», где отрубленные «русские головушки торчат на тычинушках». Сарматский натиск, продолжавшийся несколько столетий, не давал славянам выбраться из лесных чащоб. Но вскоре они настолько приободрились, что заслужили славу первостатейных головорезов.

В I веке н.э. славян под именем венедов описал римский историк Тацит. В книге «О происхождении германцев» он уделил и им несколько строк. По его словам, венеды жили на восток от Вислы между германцами и сарматами. Полностью Тацита у нас цитировать не любят. Очень уж неприглядную картину славянской идиллии он рисует: «Неопрятность у всех, праздность и косность среди знати. Из-за смешанных браков их облик становится все безобразнее, и они приобретают черты сарматов. Венеды переняли многое из их нравов, ибо ради грабежа рыщут по лесам и горам… Они сооружают себе дома, носят щиты и передвигаются пешими, и притом с большой быстротой. Все это отмежевывает их от сарматов, проводящих всю жизнь в повозке и на коне». То, что венеды – именно славяне,– несомненно. Немцы до сих пор называют славян «вендами.

Подтверждается и постепенное смешение славян с сарматами. Навоевавшись, они стали охотно торговать и вступать в браки. В рамках так называемой черняховской культуры III–IV веков вокруг Днепра, сложившейся во времена готского владычества, прослеживается многолетнее сосуществование иранцев-степняков с земледельцами-славянами. Славяне своих покойников сжигали. Иранцы практиковали трупоположения. Причем иногда еще и расчленяли мертвеца на части, чтобы он не «ожил» и не нашел дорогу домой – археологи о таких скелетах пишут в отчетах: «ритуально расчлененные». Так вот, обнаружены тысячи могил, глядя на которые, ученые констатируют, муж похоронен по славянскому обычаю, а жена – по сарматскому. Или наоборот.

Сарматская примесь очень сказалась на крови нынешних украинцев – и во внешнем облике, и в упрямстве баб (пережитки матриархата!) и даже в таком позаимствованном у степняков слове, как «штаны». Обойтись без этого ценного предмета туалета при езде верхом, сами понимаете, проблематично – сотрешь ноги до крови о потные конские бока. Однако, как бы там ни было, в языковом отношении славяне победили, позаимствовав у южных соседей все, что плохо лежало. Их было много. Они были неодолимы.

Немного только про одну команду, а если конкретно, то San Antonio Spurs

Если команда сегодня выигрывает, она  на втором месте.

Проигрывает,  на шестом.

&Или заметки перед началом playoff.

Завтра команда Portland Trail Blazers сыграет последнюю игру регулярного сезона. Игра будет играться завтра, но уже сейчас я могу предсказать результат игры.

Проиграет. Игра будет проиграна.

Проиграет, как и три предыдущие игры. И, несмотря на, казалось бы, отрицательный результат,  это все ни в коей мере не расстраивает болельщиков команды, и меня, в том числе. Дело в том, что уже неделю с небольшим назад, команда Портланда заняла твердое четвертое место в турнирной таблице и из-за того, что оказалась победительницей в своем дивизионе, результаты всех последующих игр никак не влияют ни на что.

Неясность только в том, с кем команда будет играть в первом круге playoff. Но это будет зависеть не от Blazers. Вариантов здесь множество. В зависмости от результата игр, завтрашнего, последнего дня, соперником команды может оказаться одна из четырех команд конференции. Посмотрите, как плотно размещены в турнирной таблице комнды, которые занимают со второго, по шестые места в таблице. Внимание обращайте на количество проигранных-выигранных игр. Несколько команд с абсолютно одинаковым количеством в этом и их место в таблице будет зависеть от того, как команды играли между собой в сезоне.

Команде Портланда остается только одно,  ждать. И, вот здесь, интрига сохраняется, буквально до окончания последних игр регулярного сезона, который заканчивается завтра.

Из-за нулевой важности для команды результата в последних играх, естественно, в последних играх все лучшие игроки команды в играх этих не участвуют. Ссылаются, на травмированные конечности и части тела игроков, хотя, можно даже и не ссылаться на травмы. В команде, в этом сезоне, травмы просто превышают все возможные и невозможные пределы. Только в предпоследней игре, вчера, травмированными оказались три игрока команды. А, всего, перед завтрашней игрой, из 14-ти членов команды, травмированы 7 (семь).

Такие вот, совсем нерадостные мысли перед началом игр playoffs.

Смотрю сейчас новости российского ТВ, (нашел на YouTube). Рассказывают про Пасху, точнее, про Воскресение Христово. Так вот, слушаю я как какой-то священник, говоря про традицию красить яйца, говорит о том, что яйца олицетворяют новорожденного Христа или что-то вроде этого.

Яйца вообще никакого отношения к Пасхе не имеют. Пошло это от язычества. Примерно в то же самое время древние праздновали поклонение богине Астарте. Если я не ошибаюсь, а пишу я сейчас по памяти, это все пошло из Вавилона. Богиня эта  богиня плодородия. Отсюда и яйца.

Кстати, в Америке  это еще и кролики. Тоже, к тому же плодородию.

Впрочем, в США, к примеру, этот день называется Easter. Так, я думаю, даже и честнее.

Вытянул из Сети видео с сериалом, который, как я понимаю, недавно прошел на ТВ в России.

Фильм весьма длинный, тягучий. Впрочем, как я думаю, нужно было осваивать бюджет, его и освоили. На целых 12 серий растянули то, что можно было бы уложить в 4. Впрочем, я не смог посмотреть и двух.

Как я думаю.

Но, дело даже не в бюджете.

В Сети качество видео весьма отвратительное, но& это такая задумка автора, когда съемка идет и камера все время трясется. Ко всему прочему, практически все время кадр перекошен. Если так же было и в той копии, что прошла по ТВ в России, хочется понять, что этим самым перекосом режиссер хочет сказать?

Last week, a coalition of predominantly Sunni Arab countries, primarily from the Arabian Peninsula and organized by Saudi Arabia, launched airstrikes in Yemen that have continued into this week. The airstrikes target Yemeni al-Houthis, a Shiite sect supported by Iran, and their Sunni partners, which include the majority of military forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. What made the strikes particularly interesting was what was lacking: U.S. aircraft. Although the United States provided intelligence and other support, it was a coalition of Arab states that launched the extended air campaign against the al-Houthis.

Three things make this important. First, it shows the United States new regional strategy in operation. Washington is moving away from the strategy it has followed since the early 2000s — of being the prime military force in regional conflicts — and is shifting the primary burden of fighting to regional powers while playing a secondary role. Second, after years of buying advanced weaponry, the Saudis and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries are capable of carrying out a fairly sophisticated campaign, at least in Yemen. The campaign began by suppressing enemy air defenses — the al-Houthis had acquired surface-to-air missiles from the Yemeni military — and moved on to attacking al-Houthi command-and-control systems. This means that while the regional powers have long been happy to shift the burden of combat to the United States, they are also able to assume the burden if the United States refuses to engage.

Most important, the attacks on the al-Houthis shine the spotlight on a growing situation in the region: a war between the Sunnis and Shiites. In Iraq and Syria, a full-scale war is underway. A battle rages in Tikrit with the Sunni Islamic State and its allies on one side, and a complex combination of the Shiite-dominated Iraqi army, Shiite militias, Sunni Arab tribal groups and Sunni Kurdish forces on the other. In Syria, the battle is between the secular government of President Bashar al Assad — nevertheless dominated by Alawites, a Shiite sect — and Sunni groups. However, Sunnis, Druze and Christians have sided with the regime as well. It is not reasonable to refer to the Syrian opposition as a coalition because there is significant internal hostility. Indeed, there is tension not only between the Shiites and Sunnis, but also within the Shiite and Sunni groups. In Yemen, a local power struggle among warring factions has been branded and elevated into a sectarian conflict for the benefit of the regional players. It is much more complex than simply a Shiite-Sunni war. At the same time, it cannot be understood without the Sunni-Shiite component.

Irans Strategy and the Saudis Response

One reason this is so important is that it represents a move by Iran to gain a major sphere of influence in the Arab world. This is not a new strategy. Iran has sought greater influence on the Arabian Peninsula since the rule of the Shah. More recently, it has struggled to create a sphere of influence stretching from Iran to the Mediterranean Sea. The survival of the al Assad government in Syria and the success of a pro-Iranian government in Iraq would create that Iranian sphere of influence, given the strength of Hezbollah in Lebanon and the ability of al Assads Syria to project its power.

For a while, it appeared that this strategy had been blocked by the near collapse of the al Assad government in 2012 and the creation of an Iraqi government that appeared to be relatively successful and was far from being an Iranian puppet. These developments, coupled with Western sanctions, placed Iran on the defensive, and the idea of an Iranian sphere of influence appeared to have become merely a dream.

However, paradoxically, the rise of the Islamic State has reinvigorated Iranian power in two ways. First, while the propaganda of the Islamic State is horrific and designed to make the group look not only terrifying, but also enormously powerful, the truth is that, although it is not weak, the Islamic State represents merely a fraction of Iraqs Sunni community, and the Sunnis are a minority in Iraq. At the same time, the propaganda has mobilized the Shiite community to resist the Islamic State, allowed Iranian advisers to effectively manage the Shiite militias in Iraq and (to some extent) the Iraqi army, and forced the United States to use its airpower in tandem with Iranian-led ground forces. Given the American strategy of blocking the Islamic State — even if doing so requires cooperation with Iran — while not putting forces on the ground, this means that as the Islamic States underlying weakness becomes more of a factor, the default winner in Iraq will be Iran.

A somewhat similar situation exists in Syria, though with a different demographic. Iran and Russia have historically supported the al Assad government. The Iranians have been the more important supporters, particularly because they committed their ally, Hezbollah, to the battle. What once appeared to be a lost cause is now far from it. The United States was extremely hostile toward al Assad, but given the current alternatives in Syria, Washington has become at least neutral toward the Syrian government. Al Assad would undoubtedly like to have U.S. neutrality translate into a direct dialogue with Washington. Regardless of the outcome, Iran has the means to maintain its influence in Syria.

When you look at a map and think of the situation in Yemen, you get a sense of why the Saudis and Gulf Cooperation Council countries had to do something. Given what is happening along the northern border of the Arabian Peninsula, the Saudis have to calculate the possibility of an al-Houthi victory establishing a pro-Iranian, Shiite state to its south as well. The Saudis and the Gulf countries would be facing the possibility of a Shiite or Iranian encirclement. These are not the same thing, but they are linked in complex ways. Working in the Saudis favor is the fact that the al-Houthis are not Shiite proxies like Hezbollah, and Saudi money combined with military operations designed to cut off Iranian supply lines to the al-Houthis could mitigate the threat overall. Either way, the Saudis had to act.

During the Arab Spring, one of the nearly successful attempts to topple a government occurred in Bahrain. The uprising failed primarily because Saudi Arabia intervened and imposed its will on the country. The Saudis showed themselves to be extremely sensitive to the rise of Shiite regimes with close relations with the Iranians on the Arabian Peninsula. The result was unilateral intervention and suppression. Whatever the moral issues, it is clear that the Saudis are frightened by rising Iranian and Shiite power and are willing to use their strength. That is what they have done in Yemen.

In a way, the issue is simple for the Saudis. They represent the center of gravity of the religious Sunni world. As such, they and their allies have embarked on a strategy that is strategically defensive and tactically offensive. Their goal is to block Iranian and Shiite influence, and the means they are implementing is coalition warfare that uses air power to support local forces on the ground. Unless there is a full invasion of Yemen, the Saudis are following the American strategy of the 2000s on a smaller scale.

The U.S. Stance

The American strategy is more complex. As Ive written before, the United States has undertaken a strategy focused on maintaining the balance of power. This kind of approach is always messy because the goal is not to support any particular power, but to maintain a balance between multiple powers. Therefore, the United States is providing intelligence and mission planning for the Saudi coalition against the al-Houthis and their Iranian allies. In Iraq, the United States is providing support to Shiites — and by extension, their allies — by bombing Islamic State installations. In Syria, U.S. strategy is so complex that it defies clear explanation. That is the nature of refusing large-scale intervention but being committed to a balance of power. The United States can oppose Iran in one theater and support it in another. The more simplistic models of the Cold War are not relevant here.

All of this is happening at the same time that nuclear negotiations appear to be coming to some sort of closure. The United States is not really concerned about Irans nuclear weapons. As I have said many times, we have heard since the mid-2000s that Iran was a year or two away from nuclear weapons. Each year, the fateful date was pushed back. Building deliverable nuclear weapons is difficult, and the Iranians have not even carried out a nuclear test, an essential step before a deliverable weapon is created. What was a major issue a few years ago is now part of a constellation of issues where U.S.-Iranian relations interact, support and contradict. Deal or no deal, the United States will bomb the Islamic State, which will help Iran, and support the Saudis in Yemen, which will not.

The real issue now is what it was a few years ago: Iran appears to be building a sphere of influence to the Mediterranean Sea, but this time, that sphere of influence potentially includes Yemen. That, in turn, creates a threat to the Arabian Peninsula from two directions. The Iranians are trying to place a vise around it. The Saudis must react, but the question is whether airstrikes are capable of stopping the al-Houthis. They are a relatively low-cost way to wage war, but they fail frequently. The first question is what the Saudis will do then. The second question is what the Americans will do. The current doctrine requires a balance between Iran and Saudi Arabia, with the United States tilting back and forth. Under this doctrine — and in this military reality — the United States cannot afford full-scale engagement on the ground in Iraq.

Turkeys Role

Relatively silent but absolutely vital to this tale is Turkey. It has the largest economy in the region and has the largest army, although just how good its army is can be debated. Turkey is watching chaos along its southern border, rising tension in the Caucasus, and conflict across the Black Sea. Of all these, Syria and Iraq and the potential rise of Iranian power is the most disturbing. Turkey has said little about Iran of late, but last week Ankara suddenly criticized Tehran and accused Iran of trying to dominate the region. Turkey frequently says things without doing anything, but the development is still noteworthy.

It should be remembered that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has hoped to see Turkey as a regional leader and the leader of the Sunni world. With the Saudis taking an active role and the Turks doing little in Syria or Iraq, the moment is passing Turkey by. Such moments come and go, so history is not changed. But Turkey is still the major Sunni power and the third leg of the regional balance involving Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The evolution of Turkey would be the critical step in the emergence of a regional balance of power, in which local powers, not the United Kingdom or the United States, determine the outcome. The American role, like the British role before it, would not be directly waging war in the region but providing aid designed to stabilize the balance of power. That can be seen in Yemen or Iraq. It is extremely complex and not suited for simplistic or ideological analysis. But it is here, it is unfolding and it will represent the next generation of Middle Eastern dynamics. And if the Iranians put aside their theoretical nuclear weapons and focus on this, that will draw in the Turks and round out the balance of power.

«Впервые я приехал в Россию в 1966 году и был настроен очень пессимистично. Я был уверен, что Россия не покажет хорошие результаты в ближайшие 46 лет. Роджерс вкладывает в фондовый рынок России. «Сейчас фондовый рынок России находится на спаде. И это очень хорошая новость для меня. Когда вы покупаете на спаде, то у вас есть хорошие возможности для роста. Это может занимать до пяти лет, но кризис обязательно проходит, и вы выигрываете», — сказал Роджерс. По его мнению, российский фондовый рынок является лучшим рынком 2015 года.

Сам Роджерс инвестирует в бумаги Московской биржи, «Аэрофлота» и «Фосагро». В совет директоров последней компании Роджерс вошел в прошлом году.

Наиболее перспективным направлением Роджерс считает сельское хозяйство. «Это перспективное направление. Я уверен, что оно будет развиваться, иначе нам всем нечего будет есть», — сказал он.

Также хорошей инвестицией Роджерс назвал российские ОФЗ.

Инвестируйте в Китай

XXI век — это век Китая, уверен Роджерс. «XIX век был веком Великобритании, XX — веком США, а XXI век будет веком Китая, нравится нам это или нет, — сказал Роджерс. — Многим инвесторам не нравится, что Китай растет так быстро. Они говорят, что в Китае заправляют коммунисты, но они — лучшие капиталисты в мире».

За Китаем будущее, уверен Роджерс. «Самый лучший совет, который я могу вам дать: сделайте так, чтобы ваши дети или внуки выучили китайский», — говорит Роджерс.

Если валюта растет слишком быстрыми темпами, то скоро будет коррекция, предупредил Роджерс. «Не надо покупать на таком активном росте, как сейчас у доллара», — сказал Роджерс.

Роджерс не считает надежной валютой и евро. «Евро, каким мы знаем его сейчас, не выживет в ближайшие пять лет. Что-то произойдет — может быть, в Греции или Португалии», — сказал он. По его словам, евро может быть удачной идеей для краткосрочных инвестиций, но не для долгосрочных.

Сам Роджерс делает инвестиции в китайскую и российскую валюты. «Многие сочтут меня сумасшедшим, но я покупаю рубли», — сказал Роджерс.

Rama, Packys son, was known for his mild temperament and bold tempera paintings

Rama, a 31-year-old Asian elephant known for his sweet disposition and Jackson Pollock-like painting technique, was humanely euthanized at the Oregon Zoo today after animal-care staff determined they could no longer help pain and mobility issues resulting from a 25-year-old leg injury.

Rama sustained the injury in 1990, when older female elephants began to push the young, sexually maturing bull out of the herd, something that occurs naturally in the wild, according to zoo deputy director Chris Pfefferkorn. During this process, Rama fell into a moat that in those days surrounded the elephant area.

It was a serious injury, Pfefferkorn said. Many would have said this would be the end for Rama, but he was a survivor and went on to have a great, enriched life.

Pfefferkorn said the zoo elephant enclosure was redesigned following Ramas accident, and the moat was filled in. It was unearthed by construction workers last year during excavation for the Forest Hall portion of the zoos new Elephant Lands habitat.

Rama compensated for the injury by placing more weight on his right front leg, causing him to walk with an unusual gait that was immediately noticeable to all who knew him well.

Instead of his weight being distributed evenly over four legs, it was distributed over three, said zoo veterinarian Tim Storms. That puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the other legs over time.

With his leg healed, Rama did well for many years, Dr. Storms said, thanks to a dedicated zoo staff and a combination of exercise, therapy and medication. During the past several weeks, however, he experienced a sharp decline in his mobility. Physical therapy techniques and anti-inflammatory medications that had been successful for many years were no longer easing his discomfort, and new modifications were not able to improve his quality of life. Not wanting Rama to suffer, management and staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him.



We knew Ramas injury would catch up with him someday, but it still doesnt make the loss any easier, said Bob Lee, zoo elephant curator. This is a sad day for everyone at the zoo. My heart goes out especially to all the keepers and animal-care staff who have been close to Rama through the years. Many keepers had a close bond with Rama because they were committed to providing the special care he required to live comfortably for so long after a severe injury.

Though Rama had been diagnosed with tuberculosis in 2013, the disease was not a factor in his decline, Storms said. Rama did well with his TB treatments right from the start, showing no signs of sickness and consistently testing negative since the initial positive result more than a year and a half ago.

Born April 1, 1983, Rama was the son of Oregons first elephant, Rosy, and the famed Packy, the oldest male of his species on the continent.

At around 8,000 pounds, he was the smallest of the zoos three bull elephants, and was said to have an unusually sweet temperament, forming close relationships with zoo staff, some of whom cared for him for more than 10 years. He also had a special bond with Chendra, the orphaned female Bornean elephant who arrived at the zoo in 1999.

They were good friends, Pfefferkorn said. They really enjoyed each others company.

Former Rama caregiver Jeb Barsh, now a keeper in the zoos Africa section, recalled Ramas joyful soul — perhaps expressed most memorably through his painting, an enrichment activity that grew into something bigger when Rama showed a remarkable enthusiasm for it.

He would follow me around, just hoping for the opportunity to paint, Barsh said. Once he grabbed a brush, there was no holding him back from the canvas.

Ramas artistic output was regularly on display at the zoo and was even exhibited at the famous Mark Woolley Gallery in Portlands Pearl District.

To contemplate a canvas by the painter Rama, wrote the critic D.K. Holm in a Portland Mercury review of that show, is to enter a non-figurative realm of blobs, flips, squiggles, splotches, marks, and splatter & if you had to come up with antecedents, youd think of Jackson Pollock, Joan Mir'o, or Paul Klee.

A memorial event for Rama is being planned, and zoo visitors can offer condolences or share favorite memories of him on the zoos Facebook page.

Here are the broad strokes of what you need to know:

AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon will all adopt these standards starting February 11, 2015.

Post-paid devices will qualify for unlocking as soon as the device is paid off or the service contract ends (depending on your specific plan, naturally).

Prepaid devices will qualify for unlocking no later than one year after activation.

Military personnel can have their phones unlocked upon presentation of deployment orders, regardless of payment status.

Unlocking for current customers will be performed at no cost, and at a reasonable cost for non-customers and former customers.

There are, naturally, some restrictions on all of this. Owners of both postpaid and prepaid devices will need to ensure that their devices have been fully paid off and that their account is in good standing with the carrier. Devices must also not have been flagged as stolen, lost, or associated with fraudulent activity. Additionally, there are two different kinds of devices that were looking at here, Master Subsidy Lock (MSL) and Domestic SIM Unlock-capable (DSU), and that will affect how the unlocking process happens:

MSL devices have been manufactured and/or launched prior to February 2015. They will require an MSL code from the carrier to override the restrictions keeping that device locked to the carriers network.

DSU devices will launch starting in February 2015 and will be capable of receiving an over-the-air unlock command from the carrier. Very few (apparently only one) devices have been manufacturer before now with DSU capability.

Either way, MSL or DSU devices that are unlocked will have their SIM card slots unshackled and free to take a SIM card from whatever carrier you so choose. Of course, the device still needs to actually support the frequencies used by your carrier of choice, though thankfully most modern flagship smartphones and tablets support a wide range of frequencies for easy interoperability. Older phones and mid-to-low-tier devices wont necessarily have support for your carrier of choice, but it wont hurt to unlock if youre eligible.

We dont have exact details on how all of these carriers will implement these new standards, but we can tell you a bit about what Sprint has planned. Sprint will include a message on the appropriate months bill for MSL devices when theyre eligible for unlocking. DSU-capable devices on Sprint will be automatically unlocked over-the-air once theyve become eligible.

Theres a brave new world on the horizon for unlocked devices in the United States. Soon it will be easier and clearer than ever to get your smartphone, your tablet, your hotspot, or even your laptop unlocked from the carrier. And thats a very good thing indeed.
