Born February 5, 1779, into Russian Aristocracy, Elisabeth Alexandrovna Stroganoff married Nicolas Demidoff at aged 16, and gave him two sons.
The couple lived in France where they were ardent supporters of Napoleon.
However, with tensions building between Russia and France, the couple moved back to Russia, where the marriage broke up.

The sitter, Mary Plummer, later Clemenceau, was the pupil of, and later wife of Georges Clemenceau.
Clemenceau arrived in the US in 1865 after fleeing France due to involvement in radical political activism during the regime of Napoleon III.
He eventually taught at a girls school in Stamford, Connecticut, which Plummer attended. The two wedded in 1869. Together they had three children.

In 1876 Sargent is in Newport where he is a guest of Admiral Case and John paints Case's son-in-law Charles Deering. Since the date is circa, it would seem to me that a 1876 would be closer.

Engel Christine Westphalen was a talented writer, who became famous in 1802 for her poetry and led a salon. She wears a fine black dress with lace trim, and a hat with a feather.
In the left hand she holds a bouquet of flowers.
With her right hand she points to an obelisk, which can be seen in the distance in the park of the Landsitzes Collau near Lokstedt.

Dame Laura Knight

During 1920 and 1921 Knight met and painted backstage some of the most famous ballet dancers of the day from Sergei Diaghilevs Ballets Russes.
Subjects included Lydia Lopokova, Anna Pavlova and the dance teacher Enrico Cecchetti.
Knight also painted backstage, and in the dressing rooms, at Birmingham Repertory Theatre productions.

Clothed only in a white robe, suggesting those worn in Classical times, a startled Pandora has just opened her perilous gold box.
Eyes wide, she gazes at the evils she has just unleashed into the world. With great economy, Bouguereau manages a compelling portrait of human suffering that remains timely despite being wrapped in ancient robes.
