MATERIALS

• 2g 110 Japanese seed beads (bead A)
• 1 8mm fire-polished bead (bead B)
• beading thread, diameter 00.20 (.008")

TOOLS

• scissors
• 2 big-eye needles

Each bead worked in square stitch sits squarely on top of the bead in the row below it. The square stitch lends itself to geometric patterns or to any design that you want to be neat and tidy. This ring is reminiscent of the cocktail rings my grandmother used to wear. Traditionally, a cocktail ring is meant to be a dramatic, large ring worn at a cocktail party. Today, people wear cocktail rings whenever they want to add some pop to their style.

MAKE THE RING
NOTES: Fitting a ring is easier to do when you work both band sides simultaneously and have them meet on the palm side of the hand.
1 | Thread a needle with 4' of thread. Pick up 1B and 11A, leaving a 2' tail. Pass through all the beads two more times. Attach the second needle to the tail. Pick up 11A. Pass through the B and the beads just picked up two times (photo a).
2 | Start the band on either side of the focal component: Pick up 1A. Pass through the bead directly below and through the bead that was just picked up (photo b). The new bead sits on top of the old bead and the holes are horizontal. Work a total of 11 stitches.
After the last stitch, weave the thread around so that the needle is exiting the second-to-last stitch of the row you just completed (photo c).
NOTE: Steps 3–5 apply to both sides of the band. Three stitch rows are worked until you achieve the desired size and the ends meet in the middle.
3 | Work nine square stitches. Again, after the last stitch, weave the thread around so the needle is exiting the second-to-last bead from the end.
4 | Continue working in this manner until you have a three-bead unit.
5 | Continue working three-bead rows until you reach the desired size. Finish off one side of the band by weaving the thread end in and trim.
6 | Connect the two side of the band together: The beads on the finished side are treated as though you were adding them to the side with the working thread. Pass through the closest A on the finished side, the A the needle was originally exiting, and the A on the finished end again. Repeat two more times. Weave the thread end in and trim.
