The medieval Town Halls were originally built, probably in the 14th century, during the reign of D. Afonso IV (1325-1357). The building has three distinct bodies, the porch, the Clock Tower and the Town Hall.

Urban structure formed by two distinct areas: Vila Velha, located next to the Castle and with urban morphology of medieval nature and Vila Moderna, further down, arranged in wide streets, avenues and squares, corresponding to different phases of growth. In the highest part of the city, on the ruins of the presumably existing Arab fortress, is the oldest nucleus within the walls. The built structure of the Historic Center accompanies the modeling of the terrain on which it is implanted, accentuated by the walls and the Keep, which, placed at the highest point, constitutes the focal point of the entire cluster. In the area of the Castle, the imposing Torre de Menagem marks the Plaza de Armas to the north, where the Santa Maria Church and the D. Dinis Audience Hall are located to the east, on the S. side, a small viewpoint allows a privileged view to the Serra d'Ossa.

The medieval fence in Estremoz was built by King Afonso III (1245-1279) in 1261 and improved by his successors, mainly by his son D. Dinis (1279-1325). It has two opposite main doors (East-West axis): Porta do Sol or Frandina and Porta de Santar'em. The Porta da Frandina, facing east, is flanked by a semi-cylindrical tower, with a lowered portal on the outside and round on the inside. Above the arch, at the entrance, is placed a tombstone invoking the Immaculate Conception, patron saint of Portugal, as is usual in the reign of D. Jo~ao IV (1640-1656), after the Restoration.

Historical urban nucleus. City located on a hill. Village with war square and castle. Historical center integrating in a fortified system composed by two lines of walled fence and Castle, with two zones of distinctive morphological and typological characteristics that form the urban structure: Vila Velha (area of the Castle and Bairro de Santiago) and Vila Moderna. The urban structure has medieval characteristics, and from this time it was the definition of the current urban layout in the first extramural neighborhood (Bairro de Santiago).

Rossio Marqu^es de Pombal is considered by many to be the largest and most beautiful square in the country. It is the great “visiting room” of the city, as it is the great meeting point between local people and those who visit us. This square is surrounded by an architectural and historical heritage of great value, such as the Church of S~ao Francisco, the Convento dos Congregados, the Convento das Maltezas, Caf'e 'Aguias d ’Ouro or Lago do Gadanha.

Prayer space that was part, as was customary at the time, of the rooms of Duchess Anna, mother of King D. Jo~ao IV. The ceiling, executed in 1602-3 by the painter Tom'as Luis, is decorated with frescoes of Italian inspiration that include vegetal elements and profane figures, called brutish, alongside representations of Santa Catarina and Santa Apol'onia. From the same period, a series of paintings on wood by Frei Marcos da Cruz - scenes from the Life of the Virgin - a set that once adorned the Chapel of Col'egio dos Reis Magos, the music school that operated until 1834 in a building adjacent to the Palace. On the wall that would correspond to the altar is a canvas painting by the French painter Pierre Antoine Quillard (1701-1733), representing the Annunciation.

In this room are assembled pieces of furniture, painting, ceramics and some metal objects, which help to conceive what would be an aristocratic environment of the 17th century. The sobriety and sturdiness characteristic of national furniture (the cupboard made of oak) are combined with the simplicity of blue and white ceramics, which sought to reproduce in porcelain the Chinese porcelain that flowed into the great ships of the Indian career. The portraits represent Lourenco Rebelo (1610-1661), court musician of D. Jo~ao IV, Ant'onio Caetano de Sousa (1674-1759 and Diogo Barbosa Machado (1682-1722), renowned scholars.

This room has the painted ceiling Hercules fighting the lion. It brings together 4 Dutch 17th-century cabinets and a core of Portuguese furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries consisting of four carved and polychrome leather chairs, exotic wood counter and buffet, an Indo-Persian ark and a rare style and period office chair D. Jos'e (1714-17777) Above the counter is a work by Domingos Ant'onio Sequeira (1768-1837), Preaching by S. Jo~ao Baptista, a painting much appreciated by D. Carlos who had it in the Paco das Necessidades office, currently placed between two Chinese enamel lamp plates polychrome. The Flemish tapestry tells an episode in the History of Cleopatra and Marco Ant'onio - the Farewell.

Ap'os 60 anos do reinado Filipino, Portugal recupera a independencia em 1640, em consequencia da revolta que coloca o 8°  Duque de Braganca, D.Jo~ao IV, no trono. O pintor r'egio Avelar Rebelo 'e autor do retrato a corpo inteiro aqui exposto. Duas pinturas da 'epoca, infelizmente an'onimas, retratam a Aclamac~ao e Corac~ao do novo monarca. De grande importancia para o sucesso diplomatico das pretens~oes nacionais `a consolidac~ao da independ^encia, foi casamento com o rei de inglaterra, Carlos II (1630-1685), da filha de D.Jo~ao IV, D.Catarina (1638-1705), cujo retrato decora esta sala. O modelo da Igreja do Santo Sepulcro em Jerusal'em, que ostenta as armas reais brit^anicas, foi oferecida `a Rainha Dona Catarina que, ap'os a morte do marido, regressou a Portugal.

The Kitchen was built during the reign of King Jo~ao V, first half of the century. XVIII. It is divided into 3 spaces, Barbecue, Oven and food preparation area. It has an exit to the Gothic cloister, contemporary of the first phase of the construction of the Palace and which contains elements from much earlier times that will have been transferred from the primitive castle alcove.
