The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs may have Rome's most interesting marble floor.  In the middle is this beautiful Orb and Cross, and  a giant sidereal instrument known as the Meridien of Rome runs diagonally across it.  At noon every day a ray passing through a small window illuminates the scale at that day's solar elevation.

As a whole, however, we can highlight some elements of fortification with individual value: the large cistern, from the late Middle Ages / principles of the Modern Age, of enormous dimensions, and the existence of an albacar that, if the topography would always advise we cannot forget the Arab tradition of building alc'acovas.

The Castle of Marv~ao was a strategic detention fortification, oriented towards the border, which is a mere 13 km away. It also constituted an effective place of refuge and an extraordinary point of observation and surveillance, since it clearly dominated the second most important route of penetration of the armies of the neighboring country, from Valencia de Alc^antara, in a vast area of the Alto Alentejo that goes from Badajoz to the Tagus river. Its strategic insertion is clear: it is part of the first detention line, after the Treaty of Alcanizes, which runs, in the current District of Portalegre, from Montalv~ao to Elvas. The most rocky of the national castles, it is constituted in two contiguous enclosures that, for defensive reasons, had to include all the highest rocky crest.

The Church of Santa Maria, an existing Parish in 1321, initially dependent on the Order of the Hospital, then Priory of the Order of Malta, is a building, in its Gothic structure, that the remodeling, from the 16th century, modified, in part, raised, like the church of Santiago, in the high places of the Vila.

Like almost all first-tier fortifications, it metamorphosed over time, seeking to respond to new war technologies. The bastion fortification then reinforced the entrances to the urban fence - Portas de R'od~ao, Portas da Vila and Postigo do Torrej~ao - while reinforcing the defense of the Castle in its most vulnerable area: the continuation of the crest to NO. Given the orographic characteristics of the place, the defense of the fortification would only need care in a small number of points. Thus it was thought, still in 1801: Marv~ao is a very strong square by nature: built on high and almost inaccessible rocks, it reduces its defense to a small number of points that must be improved, and carefully kept, and that through an ordinary, but effective surveillance in the precise places, in around the remaining circuit of the Square, this can be made impenetrable to the violent and bloody attempts of its enemies.

Portland Castle is one of King Henry VIII's chain of coastal artillery forts positioned along the south coast of England. It was built to a unique fan design between 1539-41, using local Portland stone. Together with Sandsfoot Castle, it defended the natural anchorage known as Portland Roads.  A renewed threat of Spanish invasion lead to the neglected castle being repaired and upgraded with two new gun platforms for the lower and upper keeps between 1584-86. The castle finally saw military action during the mid-1600s, playing a part in the English Civil War and Anglo Dutch War. Over subsequent centuries, it served as either a residence or reverted to military purposes depending on whether the country was at war. Today, it is open to the public and managed by English Heritage.
