A look at Green Peter Reservoir near the city of Sweet Home, Oregon.  This view is from the Whitcomb Creek County Park at a cove w/ rock outcroppings of banded rhyolite (wonderstone) w/ seams of agate.  Clearcutting is noticeable across the way.  Where the boat is one can see Whitcomb Island, which long before the formation of the lake was homesteaded by George Whitcomb starting in 1889.  In 1899, three of his four children (named Walter, Arella, & Leodora) died from a diphtheria epidemic that had hit Sweet Home.  He buried them atop of the hill (now the island) next to the grave of another unknown man who had died in a separate accident.

Well known to rockhounds, this roadcut in volcanic ash near Green Peter Reservoir, Oregon contains fantastic pyritohedron shaped pyrite crystals.  Most crystals range from 1/4-1/2" in size.  One can either sieve through the dirt & find plenty of individual crystals or dig into the cut itself, though it appears the boulders above are in danger of collapsing soon (a major section in the middle already has).

Steins Pillar is a 350 foot tower of rhyolite standing in impressive fashion above the drier pine forests outside Prineville, Oregon.  Here it is from a vantage point of other outcroppings - it is close to the main road in the valley below but has a roundabout approach due to private property.  Originally we were heading to a nearby thunderegg mine but had to forego it due to bad roads and lack of time, thus making this a pleasant evening hike that was out of the smoke.

The city of Diez is a state-approved spa and a former residence in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. The high medieval Castle Castle perched on a cliff above the old town of Diez. The castle is one of the most beautiful sights of this city. The panorama was made in the first courtyard. Here is also the entrance to the Youth Hostel.
