OP was tired of the relentless news hitting us day after day this supposed to be celebratory month, so she wanted to make a little escape post and what better way to make a post featuring some songs and artists that have explored Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism is an aesthetic and philosophy of combining the Diaspora with technology. To OP, this also means a sense of freedom from oppression and discrimination black people have faced and how to build a place that is free from things. The list features some classic cookout tracks with some more modern choices. (Don’t ask me why Erykah Badu is on the list. Sis for the past few years needs to have all the window seats. Thank you!)

The group has touched on afrofuturism on past albums, but this song and video is so fun and cute!

Earth, Wind, & Fire - “Fantasy” and “September”



OP featured two songs from this group to highlight the talent of co-leads Maurice White and Philip Bailey. Those costumes! That Fantasy vocalization! Those beats! Can you really celebrate Black History Month if you didn’t have an auntie break out her wine cooler and dance to this at the cookout?

Sun Ra – “Space is the Place”

The Godfather of Afrofuturism. Enough said.

Janelle Monae – “Dirty Com----” well her whole career.

The cutie pie sci-fi nerd dazzles us with her combination of different genres, her beauty and her exploration of Afrofuturism from a feminist lens.

Kasami Washington – “Street Fighter Mas”

His critically acclaimed album From Heaven and Earth is phenomenal. Though jazz can sometimes be viewed as an ‘old’ genre, Washington delivers and smooth and modern take for us.

Flying Lotus – “Coronus, The Terminator”

He’s an amazing artist who in OP’s opinion can’t make a bad song and this video is sooooo eerie but so intriguing.

Shabazz Palaces – “Shine a Light”

Afrofuturism is quite evident in this group’s work and their first album Black Up was critically acclaimed delivering some incredibly progressive hip-hop.

Parliament-Funkadelic – “Flashlight”

Another cookout classic!

Moor Mother – “KBGK”

The poet’s experimental, borderline industrial music has a lot of grit as it is the darkest track featured on this list, but OP thinks it gives a new spin on the subgenre.

Grace Jones - "Slave to the Rhythm"

Gaga, take notes. A legend in every way, if you think a concept is new in performance, Grace has probably done it at least a decade earlier.

Missy Elliot and Da Brat – “Sock It to Me”

She is a woman who is clearly ahead of her time and how perfect is that for afrofuturism.

Laura Mvula – “Phenomenal Woman”

She’s incredibly underrated, and how can this video not put a smile on your face!

THEESatisfaction – “Earthseed”

A gorgeous song giving tribute to Afrofuturist and sci-fi icon, Octavia Butler.

Page Six reported that one of Kanye's "associates" forged the rapper's signature on a contract to perform at Plein's NYFW show, which happened yesterday. After Plein wired $900k to what he thought was Kanye's rep, the alleged conman immediately emptied the account
· Fans speculated that Kanye's friend Malik Yusef was behind the scam; Yusef denied the claim and said that he had been in contact with Plein to create t-shirts to fund a new nonprofit, Donda Social. Yusef said Plein's $750k donation was returned after Kanye became "incapulant"
· In a statement, Plein's rep admitted he had been scammed and denied any misconduct on his and Kanye's part

-As you may have heard, WB is starting up their own streaming service and they are making sure that they up the ante with their library for potential customers.

-Once Netflix's contracts with TheCW and Friends expire, do not expect for them to get renewed since WB is not interested in sharing.

-Netflix pays over 100million for the rights for Friends and over $100 million for exclusive rights to CW content but WB wants their heavy hitters to be exclusive just to WB. At the moment, Netflix puts new seasons of CW shows to their library 8 days after the season finale airs. No word if this means Hulu will gain back the rights for next day streaming or if WB plans to include a similar model to Netflix.

Lady Gaga bagged the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music, becoming the first woman in the ceremony's 51-year history to win the award. (MESS)

The award was accepted by Bradley Cooper at the show in London as Gaga collected 3 awards at the 61st Grammy Awards.

"I can’t believe we just won Best Music BAFTA," Gaga tweeted. "I wish so much I was there but am at the Grammys to show them our love as well. We made a film about music. This means the world to me. Thank you to all our fans, we love you so much, we wouldn’t be here without you."
