Uber banned from operating in London |
The world-famous Uber taxi service has faced another obstacle in the UK. London authorities refused to renew Uber’s operating licence for the second time over the past two years. Transport for London (TfL), the capital’s transport regulator, accused Uber of repeated safety failures. According to the authorities, some faults in the company’s online service have placed passenger safety at risk. Moreover, Uber did not manage to eliminate the shortcomings that had been highlighted earlier to the company. London mayor Sadiq Khan supported the TfL’s decision. He emphasized that Uber would be able to resume work in the British capital if it made some improvements to its security system. Uber’s management considers the termination of its license unjustified. The company noted that it had fundamentally changed some key features over the past two years. Uber representative said the company was ready to develop further in order to meet the expectations of the drivers and passengers who rely on them. The main concern was connected with Uber’s weak security system of the online service. In particular, the system allowed unauthorized drivers to change the personal data of other registered drivers which enabled them to operate under a different name. Most of the time, new drivers did not have insurance and an appropriate license.Transport for London reported at least 14,000 fraudulent trips in the past two years. However, Uber claimed that these defects had long been fixed.

7 Greatest Inventions During World War II |
Usually, World War II deals with developments in the military field. However, World War II has given birth to other important discoveries that still have an impact on our lives today. For example, many important discoveries have been made in the fields of physics, medicine, and computer technology. All of them were successfully used during military operations and in peaceful post-war periods.
See the top 7 discoveries thanks to World War II in our photo gallery.
Space Exploration
During wartime, the Third Reich paid great attention to new scientific developments. A number of German scientists succeeded in building V-2 ballistic missiles, guided air bombs, and rocket planes. Initially, they were used to bombard European cities. After the war, most of the ideas behind these mechanical monsters were applied in the development of space, such as orbital flights, moon landings and space telescopes.
Operating with liquid fuel and inertial navigation, ballistic missiles have scared civilians. However, after the war, scientists found another way to use it.
The American missile, the Redstone PGM-11, operates with the same fuel configuration. This missile was active until 1964. WRESAT, the first Australian satellite, was sent into space in 1967 using a modified American Redstone rocket. The V-2 also became a prototype for Soviet "R" series ballistic missiles. The Soviets used a modified R-7 to take Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961.
The First Programmable Computer
The "Colossus" electronic computer, which was created by the British codemaker to decipher the Lorentz code, became the first programmable computer in the world. This computer consists of 1,500 electronic lights. Then, the number of lights increased to 2,500.
With this computer, the British were able to crack the encryption key. Each character is compiled with pseudo-random bits , for example, 10010 XOR 11001 = 01011. Previously, it took several weeks to decipher the secret message. In 1944, from the time the allies landed in Normandy, the results of the mission could be known within a few hours. This device was also used to give false information to German troops. In 1994, the working model of the Colossus Mark II was rebuilt. This computer runs at the same speed as a Pentium 2 processor laptop
Turbojet aircraft
British engineer Frank Whittle is believed to have made a turbojet engine. He obtained a patent for his discovery in 1930. However, the British government considered his discovery to be irrelevant, while Third Reich was interested in the discovery.
Messerschmitt Me-262 is the first Luftwaffe fighter jet. Then, the Germans created the first Arado Ar 234 bomber , Heinkel He 162 ("Sparrow"), single-engine (1-engine) fighter jets, and a number of others. Armed with a 30 millimeter weapon, the Me-262 can fight even with fast enemy aircraft strikes. This is a qualitative leap in aircraft development.
Nuclear Weapons
At the outbreak of World War II, people were aware of the potential of nuclear power, but no one dared to test it.
During the war, Italian-born nuclear physicist, Enrico Fermi, created the first sustained controlled nuclear chain reaction. In 1943, the Manhattan project led by American physicist Robert Oppenheimer and Lieutenant General Leslie Groves was launched.
This was the trigger point of the Cold War and the beginning of the era of atomic weapons. Shortly after the research was completed, the United States dropped two bombs made during the Manhattan project in two Japanese cities - Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in August 1945.
Radio Navigation
Robert Watson-Watt and his assistant, Arnold Wilkins, are pioneers in this field. In 1930, they were invited to investigate the possibility of developing death ray , a new weapon that was allegedly built in the Third Reich.
The scientists completed their mission successfully, successfully conducting the world's first radar experiment to detect enemy bombers. The test results are a major contribution to the field of air defense. In 1935, R. Watson-Watt received a patent for the invention of radar.
This Soviet version of the radar was designed and installed by Yuri Konstantinovich Korovin in Leningrad, tested a little earlier in January 1934, but for unknown reasons, it was not patented.
Penicillin
Penicillin was discovered accidentally by Alexander Fleming during a laboratory study in 1928. However, the extract was obtained 10 years later.
Australian scientist Howard Florey and British biochemist Ernst Cheyne continue to study Penicillin further so that it can be produced correctly as a drug. In 1941, they developed and successfully tested complex drugs and in a short time, production began to operate.
Scientists, who have made invaluable contributions to this drug, were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945.
Diving Gear
For the first time, these equipment, namely containers with compressed air and hoses, were used in 1860. French mining engineer Benoit Roucairol applied his discoveries at the mine to regulate the supply of air from the surface.
In 1878, there were devices that could last a long time under water. The device has an underwater breathing apparatus with a closed circuit that can convert pure oxygen into toxic gas. Despite the fact that this discovery is still unknown, this tool was used actively during the Second World War. Aqualungs like this become a rescue equipment for a fleet of submarines.
Then, in 1943, the mechanism was improved: naval officer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and engineer Emile Gagnan, who worked in France then occupied by Germany, created an open-circuit respirator, so that exhalation was carried out directly in the water. This type of diving equipment (set of scuba) is safe now that we have used.

US debt losing favor with investors |
The largest lending institutions are selling off the US debt. Oddly enough, the sell-off is going on amid buoyant demand for most US assets. In fact, financial markets go through cycles of buying and selling. Nevertheless, global investors are still unwilling to include US bonds in portfolios. Interestingly, non-residents have bought US assets worth $49.47 billion more than they have sold. Investment firms and global central banks have been trimming their holdings of US Treasuries. They have sold off Treasury securities at the net value of $34.32 billion. Japan used to be the largest foreign owner of the US debt, but it has dumped US bonds at a whopping $20 billion. China ventured into an aggressive reduction of its Treasury holdings two years ago aiming to assert its leadership in the standoff with the US. More sell-offs are to follow. Russia has never been a record holder of the US debt. However, it also revised its investment portfolio having sold the whole pool of Treasuries last year. At present, Moscow is again taking an interest in the US Treasury market cautiously buying bonds since September. Nowadays, Israel is acknowledged as the main investor in the US debt. Amid massive selling in other countries, Israel has amassed its holdings of US Treasuries to a record high. As a rule, investors are poised to use a free margin for buying gold as a safe haven asset.

India to benefit from US-China trade dispute |
While the world’s two biggest economies are involved in the long-lasting trade dispute, other countries do not miss out a chance to improve their economic situation. Thus, India is quickly removing existing administrative barriers in order to encourage American and other foreign companies to set up their factories in the country. New Delhi authorities are considering to offer incentives to 324 companies, including Tesla and Glaxo. The government proposes to provide to these companies such benefits as the right to use the land to set up their factories and access to all necessary infrastructure. It seems that the government of Narendra Modi is trying to reach the target of a $5-trillion GDP by 2025. Sonal Varma, the expert on Indian and Asian markets, comments on this incentive, “We observed that in the first stage of relocation manufacturers largely preferred Vietnam. However, I believe that India still has all the chances to enter the competition for foreign companies.” In addition, according to Varma, India has a “unique advantage”, a huge domestic market which will certainly attract large investments. Over the past two years, the country has achieved significant economic progress, jumping by 37 places in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking. The trade war between the US and China is a great opportunity for India to strengthen its economy.

8 bitcoin price predictions for 2019 |
According to experts, the past year was probably the worst for bitcoin: the No. 1 cryptocurrency fell by 74% from $14,100 at the end of 2017 to $3,700 in December 2018. At the beginning of this year, bitcoin rose to $4,000. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts welcomed such news. However, now the digital asset is moving lower again. After analyzing bitcoin price behavior in 2019, experts tried to predict further development of the cryptocurrency
Calvin Eyre: $0
Previously, this crypto enthusiast was a supporter of Bitcoin Cash. Now he prefers its fork–Bitcoin SV. Calvin Eyre has presented the most gloomy forecast. According to Calvin Eyre, in the future, the price of the No. 1 cryptocurrency will collapse to zero, since this asset is not backed by anything.
Arthur Hayes: $1,000 – $10,000
At the end of December last year, Arthur Hayes, CEO of one of the world’s most popular cryptocurrency exchanges, suggested that in the coming year, bitcoin price would vary to $10,000 from $1,000. Notably, the price difference in this case is very large.
Anthony Pompliano: $2,500 – $4,440
The forecast made by Anthony Pompliano, founder of Morgan Creek Digital Assets, is considered by many analysts as the most accurate. He suggested that in 2019 the digital currency would trade between $2,500 and $4,440. He also added that in the coming months, the crypto market would be unable to recover.
Sonny Singh: $15,000 – $20,000
According to Sonny Singh, Сommercial Director of one of the major cryptocurrency services, by the end of this year, the price of bitcoin may reach $15,000-$20,000. He believes that this will be due to the launch of a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF).
Mike Novogratz: $20,000
Mike Novogratz, a founder of Galaxy Digital, also believes in the triumph of bitcoin. He is sure that this year the No. 1 cryptocurrency will again advance to the $20,000 level and even slightly exceed it amid the increased demand for bitcoin among institutional investors. According to M. Novogratz, by the end of the first quarter of 2019, the price of bitcoin will grow to $10,000.
Ronnie Moas: $28,000
Ronnie Moas, a leading financial analyst and founder of the investment research firm Viewpoint Research, presents quite a promising forecast for bitcoin. He thinks that in 2019 bitcoin will deliver a few surprises for investors. He also believes that the popularity of cryptocurrency No. 1 will grow significantly. This will lead to an increase in demand, and owing to the limited supply, the price of bitcoin will soar to $28,000. That is why many economists doubt this forecast because this value will be $8,000 more than the historical high of the digital asset.
Tom Lee: current year will be difficult for cryptomarket
The forecast of popular crypto investor Tom Lee was discreet and moderate. He did not provide any figures. Earlier, the crypto enthusiast did not skimp on optimistic statements about the price of bitcoin. Once he predicted an increase in the cost of the popular virtual currency to $15,000 by the end of 2018. At the moment, Tom Lee believes that 2019 will be difficult for bitcoin and other digital currencies.
John McAfee: $1 million
One of the most mind-blowing predictions was made by John McAfee, a crypto enthusiast-millionaire and successful entrepreneur. He believes that by 2020, the price of bitcoin will hit $1 million. Analysts do not share his optimism. According to their estimates, it could come true if today bitcoin would cost at least $30,819. Nevertheless, McAfee is confident in the prospects of bitcoin.

China cannot scrap USD in its financial system |
China has set a goal of reducing its reliance on the US dollar. So, its forex reserves have been greatly diversified in the recent few years. Interestingly, the People’s Bank of China acknowledges the strong influence of the US dollar in the status of the world’s reserve currency on its own and the global financial systems. China’s monetary authorities embarked on a hard course being aware of serious headwinds. Nowadays, the US dollar still represents the lion’s share which is 59% of China’s forex reserves. In parallel, the central bank has been scaling up its holdings of other currencies and gold. According to official estimates, the gold reserves have been expanded to the record high of 1,959.5 tons. The People’s Bank of China does not report on a breakdown of its forex portfolio, but experts assume that the regulator invests mostly in the pound sterling, the euro, and surprisingly the yen as alternatives to the US dollar. Indeed, the yen is welcomed as a safe haven asset despite political jitters between China and Japan. Another thing is the financial vulnerability of China’s corporate sector due to its swelling debt worth nearly $500 million. China’s companies may find it difficult to repay their loans because the US dollar strengthened notably against the yuan in the course of the trade war.
