China's inflation accelerates due to rising pork prices |
The past month has been difficult for the economy of China. During the reporting period, the inflation rate in China accelerated to maximum levels. Last time such high values were recorded in January 2012, analysts say. The acceleration was due to a sharp increase in pork prices, while producer prices fell significantly. According to China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), consumer prices increased by 3.8% in annual terms in October of this year. In September, the rise was 3%, according to the NBS. Compared to the previous month, the price growth in October reached 0.9%, which turned out to be higher than experts' forecasts. During the reporting period, food prices in China surged by 15.5%.The growth has been the fastest over the past 11 years. According to economists, the rise in pork prices has been continuing for eight months in a row. In October, prices for it jumped by 101.3%. The cause of this was an epidemic of African swine fever (ASF), due to which the number of pigs in China decreased significantly. Experts also recorded a rise in prices for non-food products and services of 0.9%, while the cost of clothing increased by 1.2%.
Last month, producer prices in China declined by 1.6% year on year. The drop was the highest since July 2016. Experts attribute this to the prolonged weakening of China's industrial sector under the conditions of declining global demand and a trade war with the US. In October 2019, the core inflation, excluding volatile food prices and energy prices, remained at 1.5%. Remarkably, China plans to keep the inflation below 3%.

7 global cybersecurity threats to watch out for in 2019 |
Experts are curious to know how cybersecurity will evolve in the current year. The increased complexity of the digital environment increases the likelihood of hacker attacks worldwide. IT specialists constantly make new predictions. In our article, Kaspersky Lab experts share their thoughts on this matter
Cyberattacks as a way of retaliation
The authorities of many countries have already faced one of the pressing dilemmas of our time: how to respond to a large-scale cyberattack? First thing first, it depends mostly on the scope of the network threat. Analysts believe that in the nearest future the number of cybercriminals will rise.
Evolution of targeted phishing
Targeted phishing is the most successful way of cyberattacks. A key component of a targeted phishing attack is that cybercriminals arouse the victim's curiosity, luring a person into a web of deception. Massive data leaks from social media can help hackers to enhance this type of cybercrime. Experts believe that cybercriminals, who work with social engineering, see targeted phishing as an inexhaustible storehouse of opportunities. At the same time, a number of initiatives have been developed to use machine learning to improve the effectiveness of phishing. It is considered the most innovative way of infection, especially through social networks.
Network equipment and Internet of Things
Experts think that cybercriminals will be able to affect network equipment by using special tools. Many attackers use software viruses to create a universal botnet (a network of computers with stand-alone software infected with viruses). The vulnerability of the network equipment allows hackers to infect a network of computers, a local network or personal computer. When hackers make such attacks, they usually resort to the Internet of Things which uses more botnets than any other system.
New hackers to come
Nowadays, everyone can become a hacker. There are hundreds of effective tools and various software packages in the public domain. While IT specialists are strengthening the protection measures, hackers do not stay behind. They create more sophisticated virus programs. Many young promising companies use scripting tools to secure operations and improve the quality of financial services.
Olympic destroyer
Last year, the Olympic destroyer became one of the most destructive malware, and many cybercriminals actively use it to this day. Destructive malware attacks enable hackers to obtain valuable information. They can steal information about some geostrategic goals related to conflicts between different states. Many countries use cyberattacks as a tool of retaliation. It is a balance between a diplomatic response and military action. Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and critical infrastructure are particularly vulnerable to such attacks.
Supply chain security
During last year, many enterprises have faced cyber threats related to the supply chains of a product. That is why companies think twice before choosing a supplier. They check more than one time the potential suppliers 'profile. The scheme works as follows: when the object is known, the hacker can infect the hardware at the starting point rather than on the way to the customer. Supply chain attacks are an effective way to infect the computer. Only highly professional groups of hackers are able to pull off such a job.

Apple donates $2.5 billion to fight California housing crisis |
Apple, an American multinational technology company, has pledged to provide financial assistance to California's citizens. The corporation is going to invest in construction and housing, support low and middle class California's citizens as well as build shelter for the homeless.
Apple will commit $2.5 billion to fight the California housing crisis. A part of the financial package, that is $1 billion, will go to the loan fund aimed at constructing houses for the low and middle class. Another $1 billion will be dedicated to provide financial assistance to first-time homebuyers.
The remaining funds allocated by Apple will be distributed as follows. The company will give part of its land valued at $300 million for housing development. The manufacturer will also donate $150 million to support new construction projects in San Francisco and the suburbs. The remaining $50 million will be dedicated to supporting vulnerable populations.
According to analysts, Apple’s financing project outspends similar initiatives of Facebook and Google. Commonly, high income employees of technology companies displace the middle class from the housing market. Apple decided to solve this issue. Remarkably, housing prices in some parts of California are too high and continue to grow. At the same time, few houses are being built in the area. The problem of the homeless is also acute.

Orthodox vs Western Christmas: What is the difference? |
Christmas is one of the main religious holidays which is celebrated on December 25 by Catholics and on January 7 by the Christian Orthodox Church. Christmas is preceded by Christmas Eve. The Nativity of Jesus Christ was marked by the rising of the star of Bethlehem. Over time Christmas traditions have changed. They have acquired some specific features depending on different branches of the Christian religion. Read about the similarities and differences between Catholic and Orthodox Christmas in our article
Date of holiday
Western and Eastern churches celebrate Christmas on a different date due to the different systems of chronology. Catholics celebrate the holiday according to the Gregorian calendar, two weeks earlier than Orthodox Christians do. Notably, the date of Christmas is actually the same, and the differences exist only in the calendar. On Christmas Eve, Catholics attend evening mass. In the evening, when after the first star rises, they start their festive meal. As a rule, people cook a lot of delicious food. In the Orthodox tradition, a 40-day period called the Nativity Fast occurs before Christmas. Usually, people do not arrange a sumptuous feast on Christmas Eve.
Christmas service
Orthodox churches traditionally hold one Christmas service which lasts until the morning. It includes the Great Compline, Matins, and Liturgy. On Christmas Eve, believers go to the Church for Vespers. They confess and wait for the Divine Liturgy where they take communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. In Catholic churches, there is an evening mass before Christmas, as well as three separate masses that take place at night, in the morning and in the afternoon. It symbolizes the birth of the Savior in the bosom of the Father, in the womb of the virgin Mary, and in the soul of every person.
Importance of holiday
Orthodox Christmas is a religious holiday, not a family one as many assume. It is preceded by fasting that requires spiritual practice and physical work. The Orthodox Christmas service has not changed for many centuries. In the Orthodox Church, Easter is more crucial than Christmas: for the Orthodox Church, the resurrection of Christ is far more significant, while Catholics believe that the birth of Christ should be praised the most. For Catholics, Christmas is the most favorite family holiday. Fasting before Christmas is not as strict as in the Orthodox church. The Catholic Church service has adapted to the modern world and simplified some of its strict postulates.
Festive food
On Christmas, Catholics have an abundance of various dishes on the table but the most important one is the stuffed turkey with apples. The Orthodox Christians prepare festive food on Christmas Eve, arranging 12 Lenten dishes according to the number of apostles of Jesus Christ. Additionally, people cook such traditional dishes as sochivo and vsvar (compote). Sochivo is made from wheat moistened with fruit juice or honey. It is cooked from millet or rice with honey, dried fruits, and nuts. Vsvar is a compote made from dried fruits. At Christmas, Catholics give presents to friends and family, trying to appease everyone, while Orthodox Christians usually prepare gifts only for children.
Symbol of holiday
Orthodox believers honor Jesus Christ, whereas Catholics chose another symbol of Christmas - St. Nicholas or Santa Claus. Santa Claus is the heart of the holiday. He gives gifts to children. He does not come to the children with a bag of toys and sweets like Father Christmas (Ded Moroz) in Russia. During the night, he visits children and hides gifts in socks, hanging them over the fireplace, and then he leaves through the chimney. This tradition has both Christian and pagan origins. Many Orthodox priests do not approve this custom as they think that pagan traditions should not be mixed with Christian ones.

Apple reports record fourth quarter results |
There are some companies which pay taxes, do not receive subsidies from the state, do not have any family ties with top government officials, do not claim compensation from the authorities at the expense of taxpayers, do not have access to unlimited natural resources, and their employees receive wages on time. Nevertheless, they make billions! The most successful of them is Apple. The American technology giant has shown record-breaking results. Overall revenue for the fourth quarter of 2019 amounted to $64 billion. According to Tim Cook, the company's chief executive, such good financial performance was achieved due to the accelerated growth in Apple's service segments. Services generated $12.5 billion, or almost 20 percent of total revenue. The company also noted that the revenue growth had been fuelled by sales of wearables and iPad. At the same time, net income for the quarter was $13.7 billion, down by 4 per cent from $14.1 billion. The company is likely to hit new records driven by new products success. In September 2019, the American company introduced a new generation of iPhones: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Sales of the new models were beyond all expectations. или Sales of the news models were a roaring success. In addition, in October, Apple announced the launch of its new noise-cancelling AirPods Pro. What are odds of another Fed rate cut this year? |
The US Federal Reserve has lowered interest rates again as expected. The consequences of such a decision were also predictable. Cuts in interest rates in any country tend to make its currency lose value against others. That is what happened to the US dollar. However, given a number of fundamental factors, the American currency could have been more resilient. The decision to lower interest rates by 0.25 percent was supported by 8 members of the Federal Open Market Committee. Meanwhile, the remaining two members, regional Fed bank presidents Esther George of Kansas City and Eric Rosengren of Boston, advocated keeping rates unchanged at 1.75–2 percent. The main question is whether the Fed plans to continue the extended cycle of easing monetary policy. Most experts believe that the recent interest rate cut, by the way, the third time this year, will be the last, expecting the Fed leaders to hold off on another cut in December. The changes in its accompanying statement speak in favor of this decision. In particular, the phrase “taking necessary measures if they are needed” has disappeared from the text of the American central bank's statement. So, there is only a very small chance of another Fed's interest rate cut this year.

2019 Formula One World Championship |
F1's 70th anniversary season is going to be a legendary event. 20 drivers and 10 teams will compete for the title of the grand champion. Find out more about the highlights of the main world's 2019 racing championship in our article
Grand Opening Of Season
The opening ceremony of the new season will be held in Melbourne at Federation square. For fans, the entrance to the square will be free.
According to the commercial director of the Royal Races Sean Bratches, there is no better place for such an event than Melbourne as the audience there is incredible. Australian fans are super enthusiastic and just crazy about everything related to the race. The F1 will bring live music concerts to the social broadcast platform in the city. Renowned drives from previous seasons will visit the championship as well.
Extension of Formula 1 World Championship Calendar
In 2019, the race calendar still includes 21 Grand Prix, but the championship will last 259 days and will end on December 1 which is much longer than last year.
An extra week between races is needed for promoters at the start of the championship to celebrate the 1000th Grand Prix in China which will start on April 14. It also takes more time between a series of summer stages that closely follow each other. In the new season, 5 stages will be stretched over 7 weeks.
Four Festivals In Three Countries
The upcoming season will include several festivals that are highly anticipated by Formula 1 fans around the world.
The first festivals will take place in April ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix. Some celebration events will be held in Shanghai. The next two festivals are scheduled in the United States: before the Canadian Grand Prix in Chicago and in Los Angeles (ahead of the October stage in Austin). The last festival will be held in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the race in Brazil.
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will stage two four-day pre-season tests (from February 18 to 21 and February 26 to March 1). The first race of the season is scheduled on March 17 in Australia.
Major Changes in Crews
Over the last few years, there have been many big changes in the racing teams which is why by 2018 they have been modified by 60%.
This year, only 8 drivers have not been replaced. For comparison, a year earlier there were 18 of them on the list. A 100% upgrade took place in the teams of McLaren, Sauber, Toro Rosso, and Williams. Ferrari, Red Bull, Renault, and Racing Point kept 50% of their drivers. Only Mercedes and Haas did not replace any driver.
Enhanced Car Aerodynamics
The last changes in the configuration of the cars, carried out in 2009 and 2017, were made to tackle the issue of the swirl throttle when overtaking the car in front. The improvements in the aerodynamics regulations are supposed to increase the efficiency of the racing cars by 25-30%.
Anyway, how successful was this experiment will remain to be seen. For what it is worth, it is expected to determine the tendency of global changes in the regulations ahead of the 2021 season.
New Names And Tyre Markings
Instead of Superhard, Hypersoft, Ultrasoft, and Supersoft, only 3 names of tires - Hard (white rims), Medium (yellow), and Soft (red) will be used in the F1's championship.
However, this does not mean that the total number of types of rubber stiffness in the F1 is reduced to three. In fact, it is not so important as at the Grand Prix the drivers and teams are allowed to use only hard, medium and soft rubber compositions.

Trump accused of seizing Syrian oil |
Global oil wars continue unabated. The struggle for raw materials takes different forms. This time, it has resulted in accusations against US President Donald Trump.
The head of the White House is suspected of seeking to seize Syrian oil resources. According to Tulsi Gabbard, the US Congresswoman and a member of the Democratic Party, the American leader aims to take control over oil fields belonging to the people of Syria.
According to the representative of Congress, Donald Trump has left the American troops in Syria to protect oil fields rather than to fight terrorists. Tulsi Gabbard criticized the US President's policies in Syria and called it “tactics of endless war”. She emphasized that the war had been triggered off in the name of regime change. Earlier, US army general and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley noted that America would maintain control of the oil facilities in the Syrian Deir ez-Zor province.

10 Little-Known Units Of Time |
What is the time? It is something tangible and measurable, something that rules our life. In ancient times, humanity tried to limit the time or set it under certain standards. However, the time has always gone beyond perception. In order to manage time, people came up with various time measurements entrenched in everyday life in different historical periods. Find out more about timekeeping words in our photo gallery
Atom
Atom comes from a Greek word meaning uncuttable. Remarkably, in ancient times this concept was applied to the shortest period of time. A minute was thought to consist of 376 atoms, each lasting less than 1/6 of a second (or 0.15957 seconds to be more precise). Nowadays, this term is used in physics to define the smallest particle of matter.
Ghurry
In the middle ages, the Europeans measured time with the help of hourglass and sundial. In Asian countries, such as India, people used a water-clock called a ghurry. It was a hemispherical bowl made of wood or metal and pierced with several holes. Ghurry was placed in a basin full of water that swept through the holes, slowly filled the vessel until it sank from the weight to the bottom. The entire process took about 24 minutes. This period of time was named ghurry. There were once considered to be 60 ghurries in a day.
Lustre
The term lustre dates back to Ancient Rome. A lustrum was a five-year period. After its termination, a full census of the Roman population was carried out and lustration or purification was performed. The Romans made sacrifices to the Gods on the Champ de Mars in order to please them.
Mileway
This unit of time measures time and space. Literally, a mileway means a mile-long walk. Mileway measures distance and is designed to count time. In the early Middle Ages, it was a name for a period of around 20 minutes. This slot of time was considered to be enough for a man to cover the one-mile distance.
Nychthemeron
This term was derived from the Greek words for night (nyks) and day (hemera). Thus, the two opposite concepts made such a fancy alternative name for a period of 24 hours. Everything related to nychthemeron lasts no more than 24 hours.
Punct
In Medieval Europe, there was the term punct that had two meanings. One of them we use nowadays when we need to define a certain point in space (point of arrival, destination). Back then, a punct was a quarter of an hour.
Scruple
Scruple is a Latin word for a small sharp stone. Historically, it was an old apothecaries’ measurement equal to 1/24th of an ounce (roughly 1.3 grams). In the XVII century, scruple was used to refer to a tiny amount of something. It was also used as another name for 1/60th of a degree of a circle (i.e. one minute), 1/60th of a minute (i.e. one second), and 1/60th of a day (i.e. 24 minutes). Nowadays, we use this word in a more figurative meaning – a scrupulous person, someone who pays close attention to even the tiniest of details.

UK to destroy thousands of coins after Brexit delay |
Brexit is literally destroying the British pound. The prolonged process of the UK withdrawal from the EU turned to be destructive not only for the country’s economy but also for British money. The UK authorities will have to destroy thousands of 50-pence coins minted to commemorate Brexit on October 31. Apparently, the British were so confident in their plans for Brexit that they even minted the exact date of this significant event. However, the Brexit was again delayed, thus making the old anniversary coins no longer relevant. The Royal Mint was about to issue millions of these coins but stopped the process soon, although hundreds of thousands of coins had been minted already. Now, all the coins will need to be melted down. At the same time, the Treasury announced that the UK will still produce a coin to mark its withdrawal from the EU but next time they will be more attentive. Surprisingly, there are some positive aspects to this mistake, and numismatists are particularly happy about it. Some of them are already looking ahead to get these coins for their collections.
