The two expressions state a completely different point of view. The first one criticizes professional athletes by saying they are no use to the society. The second one on the other hand supports them and brings an example of such support. My personal opinion is that professional atheletes are very useful and they indeed provide a role model for a healthy lifestyle which the modern busy society really needs.
