diy reconstruction: sweater into hat

I made this hat using the sweater pieces leftover from my DIY legwarmers project. A medium weight sweater will work best (mine is acrylic) The most important part is the pattern piece. Try to makes the sides as symmetrical as possible.
[Lie your sweater flat and cut off the sleeves. Cut up the side seams and across the shoulders to create 2 separate pieces]

[Using a ruler, draw a 7 1/4 wide straight line on a piece of paper. Measure 6 1/2 inches up from the middle of your line. Draw a curved line down each side. Cut out the pattern piece]

[Using the pattern, cut out 3 sides]

[Sew the pieces together at the sides. If you don't have a serger use the zig-zag stitch on you machine to prevent unraveling]

[This is what the top should look like]
[Cut the neck band off. If the neck band on your sweater is too small you can use the bottom ribbing instead. I made mine 1 1/2 inches smaller than the circumference of the bottom of the hat. Take the band and wrap it around your head to make sure it fits comfortably. Sew the ends together]
[Sew the band to the bottom of the hat on the wrong sides. Stretch the band gently while you sew it]
