This Hat and Bag can be made with:

“STAR” BLEND YARN, Article 75.
2 skeins Medium Blue or color desired for hat.
3 skeins for Bag.
or
“DAWN” KNITTING WORSTED
3 ozs. Med. Blue or color desired for hat.
5 ozs. for Bag.
Aluminum crochet hook size F.
¼ yd. Buckram and ¼ yd. lining material.

HAT

Ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or following rounds. Place a marker at beginning of each round.

2nd Round. Ch 1, skip 1st s c, 2 s c in next s c, * ch 1, skip 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice.

3rd Round. Ch 1, skip the ch 1 of previous round, 2 s c in next s c, ch 1, 2 s c in next s c (an increase), * ch 1, skip the ch 1 and 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice.

4th Round. * Ch 1, skip the ch 1 and 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c (pattern), repeat from * 4 times. Repeat the last round twice.

7th Round. Ch 1, 2 s c in 1st s c, ch 1, 2 s c in next s c (an increase), * ch 1, skip 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * 3 times (6 patterns).

8th Round. * Ch 1, skip ch 1 and 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c, ch 1, 2 s c in 1st s c of next pattern, ch 1, 2 s c in next s c of same pattern (increase), repeat from * twice (9 patterns).

9th Round. Work even in pattern.

10th Round. ** Ch 1, 2 s c in next s c. ch 1, 2 s c in next s c of same pattern, * ch 1, skip 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * once, repeat from ** twice.

11th Round. Work even in pattern (12 patterns).

12th Round. Increase in every 3rd pattern. Work 1 round even in pattern (16 patterns).

14th Round. ** Ch 1, 2 s c in next s c, ch 1, 2 s c in next s c of same pattern, * ch 1, skip 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice, repeat from ** 3 times.

15th Round. Increase 1 pattern in every 4th pattern (25 patterns). Work 1 round even in pattern.

17th Round. Increase in every 5th pattern. Work 2 rounds even.

20th Round. Increase 2 patterns evenly spaced. Work 10 rounds even in pattern, cut yarn.

TRIM: Ch 12 rather loosely, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts of ch, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 5 sts of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row. Working in back loop of sts throughout, skip 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 5 s c, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, skip 1 s c, s c in last s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until trim is long enough to fit around lower edge of hat, cut yarn leaving an end.

Sew both short ends together placing the 3 s c directly in corner of starting ch. Sew one long side of trim around lower edge of hat. Turn opposite side of trim upwards and sew along the same line. Roll upward in position.

CUFF AROUND TOP: Ch 10 rather loosely, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts of ch, 3 s c in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row. Working in back loop of sts, skip 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, skip 1 s c, s c in last s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat the last row 32 times (17 ribs), cut yarn. Sew short ends together, then sew long sides together to form a roll. Sew around top of hat as illustrated.

2nd Round. Ch 1 and work 2 s c in same space, 2 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 21 s c, 2 s c in each of the next 3 s c, 1 s c in each remaining s c, join in 1st s c.

3rd Round. Ch 1, 2 s c in same space, * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * once, 1 s c in each of the next 22 s c, * 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice, 1 s c in each remaining 21 s c, join (60 s c).

4th Round. 1 s c in each s c on sides increasing 3 s c evenly spaced around each end, join each round.

5th Round. Work even in s c.

6th Round. Same as 4th round.

7th and 8th Rounds. 1 s c in each s c on sides increasing 4 sts evenly spaced at each end in each round.

9th Round. Working in back loop of sts only, work 1 s c in each s c (88 s c).

10th Round. Working through both loops of sts, ch 1, 2 s c in next s c, * ch 1, skip 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c, ch 1, skip 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around, do not join this or the following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round.

11th Round. Ch 1, skip 1st s c of previous round, 2 s c in next s c, * ch 1, skip the ch 1 and 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c (pattern), repeat from * all around.

12th Round. * Ch 1, skip next ch 1 and 1 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around. Repeat the last round 25 times, then ch 1, sl st in 2nd st of 1st pattern to even round.

Next Round. BEADING: Ch 4, tr c in same space, * ch 1, skip ch 1 and 1 s c, 2 tr c in next s c, repeat from * all around, ch 1, join in 4th st of ch.

Next Round. Ch 1, 2 s c in next tr c, * ch 1, skip 1 tr c, 2 s c in next tr c, repeat from * all around, do not join rounds. Work 4 rounds in pattern.

Next Round. 1 s c in each s c and 1 s c in back loop of each ch 1, join, cut yarn.

CUFF FOR LOWER EDGE: Ch 10, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts of ch, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row. Working in back loop of sts, skip 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, skip 1 s c, s c in last s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat the last row 78 times (40 ribs), cut yarn. Sew both short ends together placing the 3 s c directly in corner of starting ch. Sew side edges together to form a roll.

CORD: Crochet a ch about 32 inches long, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch, cut yarn. Work another cord in same manner.

FINISHING: Cut a stiff cardboard same shape as bottom. Cut a piece of buckram and lining same shape as cardboard. Cut a strip of buckram 3 ½ inches in width and long enough to go around bottom. Sew strip of buckram to bottom section of buckram. Place cardboard next to buckram. Cut lining to fit entire bag and sew in position on inside of bag. Lace cord through beading starting each cord on opposite side and lacing over 4 tr c and under next 4 tr c. Sew ends together.

Sew roll in position around bag, sewing about ¾ inch above lower edge.
