Сильнейшее землетрясение в Японии привело к смещению собственной оси Земли, вокруг которой планета сбалансирована по массе, на 17 сантиметров и к сокращению продолжительности земных суток на 1,8 микросекунды. Эти уточненные данные привел Ричард Гросс из Лаборатории реактивного движения НАСА, расположенной в Пасадине (штат Калифорния). Два дня параметры были другими - 15 сантиметров и 1,6 микросекунды.

Предварительные расчеты удалось проверить и скорректировать на основе показаний орбитальных спутников США. Их данные позволяют составить наиболее точную картину происшедших на планете изменений. Ученый считает весьма вероятными новые корректировки с учетом сохраняющейся высокой сейсмической активности на Японии. Однако они будут крайне незначительными.

Как пояснил Росс ИТАР-ТАСС, собственная ось Земли, которую нельзя путать с осью вращения планеты, смещается постоянно под воздействием любых событий, которые приводят к изменению распределения масс крупных объектов на поверхности. "Длительность суток меняется точно так же, как фигурист наращивает скорость вращения своего тела на месте, прижимая руки к бокам. Землетрясение в Японии сместило массу Земли таким образом, что планета стала вращаться чуть быстрее. Соответственно, продолжительность суток сократилась", - добавил ученый НАСА.

Специалист сравнил катаклизм в Японии с прошлогодним землетрясением у берегов Чили. Оно сместило собственную ось Земли на 8 сантиметров и сократило продолжительность суток на 1,26 микросекунды.

Произошедшее 11 марта землетрясение магнитудой 8,9 на северо-востоке Японии признано национальным метеорологическим агентством самым сильным за всю историю наблюдений. Число жертв разрушительного землетрясения и цунами в Японии превысило тысячу человек. Однако наблюдатели не сомневаются, что свыше 10 тысяч погибших в результате землетрясений и следовавших за ними разрушительных цунами будет только в одной японской префектуре Мияги, которая больше всего пострадала от стихийного бедствия.

Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicentre. Another 137 were confirmed killed, with 531 people missing. Police also said 544 people were injured.

More than 1,400 people were killed by the quake and resulting tsunamis and hundreds more were still missing, according to officials, but police in one of the worst-hit areas estimated the number of dead there alone could eventually top 10,000.

Television cameras captured the moment that smoke poured from what at first appeared to be one of four reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, located 150 miles north of Tokyo.

After a few nerve-wracking hours, however, the government and the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power, said the damage had been confined to the walls and roof surrounding the reactor, sparing its metal casing.

The chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano, told a televised press conference that radiation around the plant had, in fact, started to decrease.

A "tiny" amount of radiation had leaked earlier in the day when officials attempted to relieve pressure inside the reactor.

"We have confirmed that the walls of this building were what exploded, and not the reactor's container," Edano said, adding, "There was no large amount of radiation leakage outside. At this point, there has been no major change to the level of radiation leakage outside, so we'd like everyone to respond calmly."
