“…I wrote to Canon's Australian office to seek their advice about the error code E18 and referred them to this web page of other people's reports, asking for their assurance that the fault was not a design fault. Their National Service Manager kindly replied to me as follows:
"The Digital Ixus E18 error code is the camera's internal diagnostic code for a lens related fault as was the case when the Optical Unit faulted and subsequently was replaced in your unit. There is no suggestion or indication on our repair statistics that this fault will recur and our technician's (sic) are confident with the repair.
"(The E code (xx: number) is shown on Page 73 of the Instruction Manual indicating a camera malfunction and the appropriate suggestions on what to do, i.e. Contact Canon Customer support Help Desk.)
"It must be noted, that Canon suggests that all cameras irrespective of model or size should be carried in a protective case to prevent damage from foreign particles, such as sand, grit, dirt etc, which can accumulate in bags and pockets, that an damage the camera."
So my interpretation of that is that Canon believes it's a care and maintenance issue, not a design fault. I should note that I have always stored the camera in the case supplied by Canon whenever I am not taking photos with it. I do believe however that the case is poorly designed in that it doesn't have space to hold a spare battery or card, and doesn't stay attached to the camera. I might need to investigate buying an alternative case...
