Last year I was in Thailand during this festival and had a lot of ambiguous (двойственные) and wet impressions:)
Also known as the Thailand Water Fight Festival, the Songkran Festival is
considered one of the most important for the people of Thailand. It is celebrated as a traditional Thai New Year, when the people
sprinkle water on the elders to pay Buddha respect.
This celebration will be the most important festival for the Thai people every year. Songkran festival is one of the Thailand National Public Holiday 2014.
Even though the official holiday only last for 3 days, most workers take a week off.
Since the Sonkran Festival has to do mainly with water, the people will gently sprinkle or
pour water over the elders and other family to
ensure good luck. This “sprinkling” has
evolved into splashing strangers on the streets, with either a bucket of water or a water gun, but it is all just for having good fun.
Because of all the water, Songkran is also known as the Thai Water Festival. Tourist visiting during the festival have mixed feelings about this, and some actually avoid going to Thailand during the festival. Still others plan their trips to
coincide with Songkran and love to join in the fun water fights.
