The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel consists mainly of a fresco painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512 and inaugurated by Pope Julius II on October 31, 1512; it is a masterpiece of Italian Renaissance painting considered one of the most important in Western art. The painting covers the entire ceiling of the Sistine Chapel built in the Vatican under Pope Sixtus IV, between 1477 and 1483, to house solemn ceremonies, including conclaves.
